we don't get it free here either... I have to go to bristol & it now costs a youchy £190!!!

But I'm now 38 and hubby 45... so felt it would hopefully put mind at rest as early as pos... of course depending on the results we may well end up doing csv or amnio too... ho hum... this waiting bit is pants!

CoteDAzur · 12/10/2008 07:16

frazzle - Down's Syndrome is usually not hereditary. Do you have 45 chromosomes?

Having said that (to put your mind at ease), I am not going into the whole probability game either this time, and will go straight to amniocentesis.

CoteDAzur · 12/10/2008 07:16

We have free nuchal test, by the way. As part of the free 12 week test, doctor also measures nuchal thickness, looks at nasal bone, etc.

pulapula · 12/10/2008 08:11

I've booked a private nuchal scan (£145) as the 12 week scan in Sheffield is just a dating scan. I will then have the blood tests at 15 weeks. I don't plan to have a CVS or amnio whatever the results. A friend had an amnio and it triggered a very early labour (22 weeks) and the baby was just too premature to survive.

frazzledoldbag34 · 12/10/2008 09:49

Cote - I know DS isn't usually hereditary but they can't tell me definitely that it isn't in our case. Also my mum was only 25 when she had my brother and I'm almost 35 which makes me even more nervous. I don't feel that the stats provide enough information to give me the peace of mind we would like - I know 2 girls who were under 25 and given very low risk blood test results and had Downs babies. Huge shock for them, obviously.
Consequently we have decided that CVS (or if that isn't possible as sometimes it isn't) an amnio is the best plan for us. I know it's wouldn't be everyone's choice in our circumstances but having been through my childhood with my brother I feel I need to have that choice.
Good luck with your amnio.

By the way, feeling so MUCH better this morning. No nausea at all so far. Have just made pancakes for the kids breakfast and eaten a big pile too.
I do have a slight worry about feeling better now, at 9 weeks......can anyone reassure me that this is ok? (I know I said I wouldn't worry any more having seen the lovely bean on Thursday) but can't help it.
My friend just leant me her Doppler, but haven't used it yet as not sure it would work? I think I might try later on and see. Anyone else used one successfully this early?

frazzledoldbag34 · 12/10/2008 09:52

By the way Cote thanks for the link to the Wiki Answers site.

Nikkiemadisonandbump · 12/10/2008 12:41

Frazzled Im 9 weeks and feeling better too! Am worrying myself silly that something isnt rite I just hope its all ok and normal.

CoteDAzur · 12/10/2008 15:44

frazzle - re "they can't tell me definitely that it isn't in our case"

Yes, they can. It is a simple DNA test of counting your chromosomes.

frazzledoldbag34 · 12/10/2008 16:53

Cote - they haven't suggested this to us at all - odd? They just advised (and same with the other 2 DC's) that if we need to know we do a CVS or amnio.
I guess that even if they tell us we're not any more likely than anyone else to have a downs baby, it probably wouldn't help at this stage as I'm still nearly 35 so would worry anyway.

Nikkie- Fingers crossed all is well. Hopefully we're just lucky that the nausea is on its way out. Slept for 2 hrs this afternoon and have an enormous pregnant looking stomach so hopefully the bean is still growing. I do still feel 'pregnant' I think, just not horribly sick like I have been. If you know what I mean.

Very quiet on here today.....where is everyone?

cece · 12/10/2008 16:59

I am shocked so many of you are having to pay for a nuchal test.

Now I feel bad. My local hospital offers nuchal combined with bloods... but I doubt I will have it done. I will be 42 by the time baby is born so already know I am high risk. No point having the tests done to tell me something I already know IMO!

Although I think DH thinks I am mad and would like me to have them done, so it is not 100% at the moment... Just can't think of a good reason to have it done at the moment.

CoteDAzur · 12/10/2008 17:43

cece - Nuchal test does not depend on your age. It is just about measuring the thickness of the nuchal fold of the fetus, in its neck. It will only tell you that you are high risk if this thickness is abnormally high, not because you are 42 years old.

Jools1 · 12/10/2008 18:00

Frazzled - I think everyone has been enjoying the sunshine

I've had a busy day - went to the gym, full of energy and did both my normal gym classes - Body Pump and Combat. The Combat was slightly less high impact than usual, but only really because my enormouse tender boobs made bouncing around rather painful !

DP had hoovered, mowed the lawn and decided the fridge freezer needed defrosting, so had turned that off - I spent most of the afternoon unloading it, cleaning, reloading, mopping up water and then shopping to restock ! Am sitting down now for the first time since around 1pm and am tired, but not unreasonably so Am really beginning to wonder if there is a bean in my tum or I'm just getting fat !

frazzledoldbag34 · 12/10/2008 18:21

Sunshine? sunshine? What sunshine? None round my way unfortunately!!!!!
Perhaps we should move abroad after all. Plus then we might escape this horrific recession. Although where to go?

Febes · 12/10/2008 18:39

Hi all DD and I are sick so feeling very rubbish. Its the first time DD has been sick and I feel so sorry for her. I am still getting MS but still not as bad as last time but I will also feel reasured to see the bean in 2 weeks time. My hospital offers a nuchal scan at the same time as the dating at 12 weeks but you opt in for it if you see what I mean. I'm getting it but don't know what I would do if bad result. Just hope for the best I guess.

frazzledoldbag34 · 12/10/2008 18:39

Oops. The top button just pinged off my jeans.
Am officially fat!
(Two wks ago I could put them on and off WITHOUT undoing the zip and button - YIKES)

frazzledoldbag34 · 12/10/2008 18:41

Febes and DD- feel better soon.
It's awful when they're sick

frazzledoldbag34 · 12/10/2008 19:06

Ooooh, I quite like talking to myself!

Jools1 · 12/10/2008 19:41

hehe - being child free at the mo, I have the luxury of time and spend a lot of time on the net - often feel like there is an echo in here

FKelly · 12/10/2008 19:43

I've been sorting out DS1's bedroom today and he's been 'helping'. Was a very successful day and I'm also not feeling quite as icky as I was earlier in the week. Still needing the bands but definitely loads better...

I'm going to have to buy some pregnancy jeans as my maternity trousers are all light weight floaty ones due to having DS1 in the really hot summer of 2006.

Just don't know which style of jeans to get... under bump/over bump/side jersey panel... what do you think?

Febes · 12/10/2008 20:02

I found over bump jeans itchy I think jeans with an added stretchy bit (very attractive) are the best.

Jools1 · 12/10/2008 20:03

Went shopping today for some alternatives to water / squash as I am missing my red wine and getting sick and tired of plain water ! Came home with some sparkling grape juice and some alcohol free Cobra beer - may try one in a minute

I was looking forward to a large glass of caffeine free diet coke last night, but the pizza delivery guy brought full fat coke, which I can't stand - cue preggie teary tantrum

It isn't a cheap exercise though, being teetotal ! Anyone got any good recommendations for soft drinks ?

frazzledoldbag34 · 12/10/2008 20:04

Isabella oliver or Seraphine are meant to be the best maternity jeans. Agree about the over-bump bit being hot and itchy.

pulapula · 12/10/2008 20:22

I started drinking alcohol-free Cobra during my last pg and carried on- i think it's a great substitute for the "real thing". I am drinking lots of fizzy drinks (diet coke, orange/lemonade, fizzy water) as it seems to help with my queasiness. Doesn't help with the top wind though lol.

I am craving white wine and coffee so have been out to buy some decaff coffee. Non-alcoholic wine just isn't the same.

I find the jeans with the stretchy panels the most comfortable. My flies on my normal jeans keep coming down and they are getting very tight, so not long before I need to get my mat collection out. I weighed myself today and was 10st 9. Not sure what I was before tho. All I know is I was at my physical peak when I got married in 2004 and was 9st, then went to 13 st with DD, and was very disappointed to still be 12 st after the birth. Managed to get down to 10st after a couple of years, then back to about 12 st with DS. I am eating a lot at the moment (to stop the sicky feeling) but will worry about it later lol. Just tucking into a tin of quality street

FKelly · 12/10/2008 20:45

I fancied something really tangy and needed something to take the metallic taste away that suddenly reared it's head over the last few days. So bought some fresh Sicilian flat old fashioned lemonade from sainsburys. Doing the trick especially with loads of ice

FKelly · 12/10/2008 20:47

I'll have a look for Isabella oliver & Seraphine jeans on the net... there'll be no shops locally here. I live in a v small town with limited choice
