I've read Lucia Lucia but not any of the other Adriana Trigiani, would really recommend that one though. I read masses but loads of it is trash and I struggle to remember what I've read! The two "good" books I read in the last year that really stood out (and made me feel vaguely intelligent) were Joseph O Connor's Star of the Sea and Atonement by Ian McEwan. Both massively readable and thought provoking, but you need a bit of clear time to get started with them both.

welshmum · 24/02/2005 13:56

I'm not reading pg books although I will look up what it's supposed to be doing according to the week in my old books.
As I've said before on here I've just read 'What Mothers do - especially when it looks like nothing' and I got quite alot out of it. Although I think it's a book for when you've had a baby and not for before.

mrsflowerpot · 24/02/2005 13:57

it's taking me so long to post (am cooking sausages at the same time) that everytime I click you've moved on!

ON the easy labour front, my friend just had her 4th baby, 2.5 hours start to finish, no tearing, hardly broke a sweat. But then she does now have 4 kids to cope with.

Hi girls,

Love all the book talk, Mrs W we have a lot of reading matter in common, Kingsolver, Shreve.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's noticed the mood shift. I think it will be temporary.
I joined MN 2 years ago and have dipped in and out a lot. Most of the time I love it, then I read a thread that disintegrates into an argument, someone feels persecuted, everyone gets very upset and it dis-heartens me so I take a break. For my part, I come on here for fun and although I understand why people get inflammed about certain discussions, what I don't understand is why everyone has to jump in whether they are involved or not. But I think that is a reflection of my personality; if it doesn't concern me I stay out. Of course I understand, MN discussions would obviously fall apart if no-one posted an opinion. It's just with the arguments it only seems to aggravate matters.

On those occassions where I have left, I'm pretty sure no-one noticed as I wasn't contributing to a regular thread or made and friends, so it was easy. Now I'm a regular poster on this thread it's much harder to take a back seat, mainly because I'd miss you all too much But, I expect I probably wont post as much as I have done in the past i.e. 20 times a day! In the process my house will be spotless, my French homework will always be done and I will be the most well-read person on here In fact, I may turn into Bree from Desperate Housewives, god forbid!!

By the way, who watched 'Jamies School Dinners'? I loved it, Nora was invaluable viewing too. What a pile of shit those kids were being served

mrsflowerpot · 24/02/2005 14:53

DH and I have just been talking about Jamies School Dinners (as we stuffed down sausages, hmmm, but nice butchers ones in our defence ). We could not believe the rubbish they were being fed, and the pittance the school had to feed them on. Felt really sorry for the dinner ladies and the head who obviously knew it wasn't right but were so trapped by the finances. My ds is a difficult enough eater anyway, if he was faced with that sort of rubbish at school I would be fighting an absolute losing battle at home.

JonahB · 24/02/2005 14:55

Oh g-d lipstick. I watched it. Not having any kids, I vowed then and there that my child will be packed off to school with a packed lunch every day of his/her life. Those meals were AWFUL. Is that really what kids today get fed on?

I can recommend 1 lighthearted pgy book. Its called "The best friend's guide to pregnancy" by Vicky Lovine. My SIL gave me her copy. It talks of pgy realistically, rather than a medical, sterilised version. Plus its v. funny. Just miss out the clothes advice (leggings and blazers are never a good look, pgt or otherwise) and read the other bits. I've also got a copy of "What to expect when you're expecting" which gives proper advice.

nab · 24/02/2005 14:56

Hello! I still don't know how all this works. How do you all find the time to stay on chatting so much and remember who is who?! I am still quite new though.
Had another scan today. Feeling blue but have just rung ARC and feel a bit better. I think I felt really low as I had to justify again why I didn't want the Quad test. I feel like the medical staff have started me down a road I didn't want to go (wouldn't have an amnio) and then having frightenend me half to death are now saying everything will probably be okay. Another scan in 4 weeks. The kidney looked okay but she said it would need to be checked as it may only show up when the baby's bladder is full. The cyst is still there. I am having my baby whatever happens but would want to be prepared. I know I am not making any sense as if I am having the baby anyway, why do I need to know, but I do. I have a nearly 4 year old and an 18 month old to think about not to mention DS1 starting school in Sept so it's all hard. Hubby won't be home til 8pm instead of 6-30 so that was another downer and I can't go out shopping as it is cold and snowy. Want some wellies though! End of moan. DS1 wants to do CBeebies!!
I'll watch Jamie's kitchen thing I taped last night. Sees you later.

welshmum · 24/02/2005 14:56

Lippy - don't change your habits on this thread please. I started the day pretty down but having thought about it and been jollied along by others I really do believe we'll get back to how we were - just might take a bit of time. I've already noticed you not being about much today and missed you.
I think we'll be even more important to each other once the babies arrive - I remember how isolating that time can be without people to chat to.

nab · 24/02/2005 14:59

I have the VL books too. Guide to pregnancy and Getting your grove back as well as another I have forgotten the name of. Have to go, DS1 piddled on the seat...........

Scraggyaggy · 24/02/2005 15:06

Have popped in for 2 mins - Has anyone thought how we could organise a book club between us??? Could be fun!

welshmum · 24/02/2005 15:07

That's a good idea Scraggy - count me in

Scraggyaggy · 24/02/2005 15:09

I'm at college now, but I'll give it some thought in the next lecture and post later while I'm on the train.... perhaps we can get sthg going on a month by month basis to read the same book and discuss. Or a library share between us? Any ideas???????

Would also be in for a book club.

And Lippy, I thought you'd been quiet today...come back!!!

Nab, I'd been wondering how things had gone. Sounds broadly positive news but the uncertainty must be very stressful.

Right, better go as I'm finishing work early today (Nab, being at work is the only way I get to keep up with this thread, when I'm off on a Friday I only get to post at nap time!).

eastyorksmum · 24/02/2005 15:58

Jonah - what do you mean "double and triple"?? Hope she's ok soon! What sort of birth did she have - was she on her back/had an epi/waterbirth...?

Glad to hear I might have a couple of worthwhile books in the house

Bloody hell Welshie! 10lb 11oz!! Please tell me your friend is tall and had wide hips! I haven't read any of Andriana Trigiani, but I'll have a look next time I'm in Waterstone's.

KVG - everytime you mention York I pine to be there. My best friend lives there and I spent a fabulous 3 years there myself. She called me at midnight on New Year's from the foot of the Minster. Were you there in the heyday of the York Arms??

MrsF - are you not having anymore scans then? Oo - ANOTHER unread book I have upstairs - Star of the Sea!! Great - dp's mum gave it to me a few weeks ago (his family are all Irish)

LIppy - I had a passing fancy last night whilst watching desperate housewives. I thought for a moment I might like to try and be Bree for a while. Dp would LOVE it! Don't post less

Nab - i'm sorry you're feeling so down right now about the scan and stuff. I'd want to know too, I think I'd want to be as ready prepared as well as possible to give my baby extra care if he needed it. Also the medical team would be best off knowing.

charleypops · 24/02/2005 16:43

Hi Eastyorksmum, CONGRATULATIONS and welcome!! Are you from the Hull area by any chance?

JonahB · 24/02/2005 17:21

Hi Eastyorkmum, Congratulations on your boy!!! Gosh, I'm struggling to get through 1 pgy, let alone 4.

Oh charley, didnt mean to confuse you. I was just "Eek"ing a lot (double and triple times) at how horrendous it all sounded. Luckily all the lovely people on the site immediately told me stories of when it goes okay and you are not in labour for 24 hours (shudder). I've not chatted to the mother myself yet so I dont know all the full details.

JonahB · 24/02/2005 17:22

Charley, that 10lb 11oz scared the life out of me too! That would be a high %age of our overall weight, coming out of..........
