So do I Trib . We are going to visit her this afternoon I think, so we'll find out more when we see her and the little baby.

KVG, you are an incredible reader! Number one and number two on my all time favourite list are: Behind the Scenes at the Museum (Kate Atkinson), The Poisonwood Bible (Barbara Kingsolver) - have you read either of these? I also like Anne Tyler and Anita Shreve novels. Will have to have a proper think about this. You should have a look on the book club section of Mumsnet, there is a good selection of books mentioned on there.

Lua · 24/02/2005 12:12

MOrning all!

The dark mood seems to be universal. Did you watch "desperate housewifes" last night? I thought I was in for a relaxing evening, but ended up crying my eyes out at Lyneete's desperation. I am not a SAHm, but I certainly could relate to her!

I am sure I will be the voice of disagreement here, but I don't see that other thread as being an attack on the due in June mum's. I can see that some comments made here could be interpreted as a personal attack on someone else. I agree that as a tight group we can all understand the context and that might be lost on someone that is not following. I think some people clearly was overly rude there, but I think we might have been a bit overly defensive of our little heaven.

welshmum · 24/02/2005 12:14

Oh Mrs W your poor friend - you're right it puts everything into context.

Lua · 24/02/2005 12:14

Ooops forget to add...
Mrs. W - Really sorry to hear about the news of your friend DS's! Hopefully it can be solved!

KVG have you ever read anything from Margaret Atwwod? I luurve her books!

welshmum · 24/02/2005 12:15

Lua - you disagree away girl! it is absolutely all about context isn't it?

charleypops · 24/02/2005 12:18

Oh MrsW - I am sorry to hear about your friend's little boy. I've heard of this sort of thing before - at least I've heard of people being born with part of their bowel missing. You should look through the archives here to see if you can find any info you can pass on to her, or start a thread.

Thanks for those titles KVG, I also love reading, but have bought a few dodgy ones recently that have been a waste of time

Although I can never remember off the top of my head any books I've EVER read in my life, until someone mentions them, (I've also packed a load away so can't scan through them) these were some of my favourites from the more "classic" stuff (I have very eclectic taste);

Cider House Rules - John Irvine
Flavour of the Month - Olivia Goldsmith
The Collector - John Fowles
Drop City - T C Boyle
War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts - Louis De Berniers (I enjoyed this more than Captain Corelli's Mandolin)

Gosh, can't think of any more righ now, there must be loads. I'll have to make myself a list...

charleypops · 24/02/2005 12:20

KVG Ooh - you already said the collector I might have another bash at memoirs of a geisha - I have it upstairs..

KVG - I so wanted to like The Magus, but just couldn't get on with it so gave up after a couple of hundred pages, if that.

I have read Handmaid's Tale, found it ok, and have Girl with a Pearl Earring upstairs too which I might try...

I've popped Behind the Scenes and Poisonwood on my list. I'll check Primo Levi out.

Oh, also recently read The Idiot (Dostoyevsky) and enjoyed that.. More suggestions for me too please!!

I have visited the book club, but felt a bit overwhelmed...

charleypops · 24/02/2005 12:51

I. Am. Going. To. Tile.

katzguk · 24/02/2005 13:08

shall i lighten the mood a little, it has been snowing here non-stop all day and we now have a good 6 inches of snow!! DH had to take the train to work and it took him 2hrs!! instead of teh normal 35 min drive.

MrsWednesday · 24/02/2005 13:10

Still snowing in Leeds too Katz. Hope it's all cleared for Sunday!

JonahB · 24/02/2005 13:20

Afternoon All,

Nice to hear we have so many book lovers on the site!!!!
Lipstick, I'm reading the No 1 ladies detective series as well. I've got as far as the first 2. The last 3 are def on my pgy list.
Charley - memoirs of a geisha and girl with a pearl earing are both fab. Totally recommend them both.

Mrs wed, so sorry to hear about your friends little boy. How awful.

Welshie, glad you still dream about your DH that's really lovely. My DH and I laugh about the idea of dreaming of each other. We both agree it would be a total waste of a good dirty dream

My biggest hugs of the day go to Mrs F - Poor you not being able to eat chocolate. Being able to stuff myself is one of the only perks pgy has brought me

My horror birth story of the day goes to my friend who has just had her first. She was in labour for 24 hours (eek!), then haemorraged quite badly THEN had to be stiched up quite a bit (double and triple eeks!). She's fine, apparently, but as she is still on a drip, they are keeping her in hosp for a week. This hasn't sold the whole "giving birth" idea to me one little bit.....

Lua · 24/02/2005 13:21

And still no snow in Manchester!!!
It's bloody cold and some flakes can be seen here and there, but no acumulation for a single snowball!

JonahB · 24/02/2005 13:27

Oh, but Lua, we have freezing cold and greyness. What more could you ask for?

welshmum · 24/02/2005 13:30

JonahB here's a lovely one for you to make you feel a bit better about the forthcoming event. A woman I know from playgroup has given birth to her dd2, 2 and 3/4 hour labour, no stitches and the baby was 10lb 11oz.......
On the book front anyone read Andriana Trigiani's books, Big Stone Gap, Big Cherry Holler, Milk Glass Moon etc. They're in the gentle observational style - I like them alot if I'm in the right mood.

mrsflowerpot · 24/02/2005 13:49

thanks for the no-chocolate hug JonahB! The worst thing is I haven't stopped really really wanting choc, just know that if I eat it I will feel revolting.

Still don't know what I'm having, Charley, despite 4 scans, not a cooperative baby at all I'm afraid. So we're waiting for a surprise after all. I feel very different to the way I did with ds, so I wonder if it's a girl, but that's all I have to go on. The wedding ring trick however, is repeatedly adamant that it's a boy.

So sorry to hear about your friend, MrsW, what a worrying time for them.

MrsWednesday · 24/02/2005 13:51

I've read the first two of the trilogy Welshmum, must get round to reading the last one. Very enjoyable, lighthearted reading.

Is anyone reading pregnancy books then?

MrsWednesday · 24/02/2005 13:53

Mrs F, your pregnancy is playing a mean trick on you if it hasn't taken away the desire for chocolate.

Lua · 24/02/2005 13:53

You are right Jonah... What else can I want????

If you want a quick survey of how many labours go easy vs. how many are gruesome, I recommend checking out the birth announcements section. I think you'll see that the great majority goes really smoothly! Don't worry!
