Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
PInkyminkyohnooo · 16/09/2008 16:30

Rutho I was in no way suggesting you have to buy my blankets!! I was just using them as an example.
But having sadi that I have some really nice ones made up in the new fabrics. I just need DH to get the lights from work so we can take some pictures. It's all very nearly there now, thank goodness.

Choco I know exactly what you mean. BY this time with DD I had her birthday booked in, unless she was early, I even knew when my last antenatal appointment would be. I'm back in the land of the unkown with this baby and it's quite starnge!

ruthosaurus · 16/09/2008 16:33

Ceebee, don't tell DH but [whispers] I'm planning to be "asleep" when the first nappy needs changing as I've heard about that stuff...

I just don't want to be either a) stuck without enough stuff or b) skint because I bought too much tat I don't need! F'rinstance, I'm planning to breastfeed so do I need to get a breast pump or what?

PInkyminkyohnooo · 16/09/2008 16:35

lol quite so, ceebee, practice makes perfect and you very quickly get lots of practice changing nappies!! I'd say it takes no more than a few days or so before you are pretty much on auto-pilot! I think the lack of sleep actually helps with this.

PInkyminkyohnooo · 16/09/2008 16:37

Rutho I would prolly not bother getting a breastpump in advance. They sell them in the supermarket, so if you find you need one you can send someone out for one.

ruthosaurus · 16/09/2008 16:39

No no, Pinky - I WANT a blanket! I've been crocheting a mad multicoloured one as a pram blanket but it's too thick to use indoors as a cot one (and it's not finished yet). Please send the link!

ChocOrange05 · 16/09/2008 16:39

Saurus I bought a breastpump at the weekend and I am planning to breastfeed. I think I am going to give my LO a bottle a day once it has learned to latch on (to my breast!) as I know some friends who have had real trouble getting their LO's to take bottles once they are a few months old, if they are used to exclusively breastfeeding. Also I think it will be nice for DH to be able to do one feed a day. But then again, what the heck do I know, this is just a best laid plan (of an unknown first timer!) and all that! To each their own I reckon, go with the flow and see what works!

Betti · 16/09/2008 16:40

ruthosaurus - lol at your comment about being asleep to avoid that 'stuff'. I had to make my 1st nappy change in hospital and nearly fainted when I took the nappy off and saw all that 'marmite'. I couldn't get the darn atuff off and there wasn't anyone around to ask so I just got off what I could and left the rest. Put on a clean nappy and ignored it. When the mw came round I asked her whether it mattered that I couldn't get it all off . Oh how I cringe at how naive I was !

ruthosaurus · 16/09/2008 16:42

Chocorange, I am SO with you on the DH bottle feeds - DH has been saying things like "Well, of course you'll be doing all the feeds" but a bit scared of the breast pump idea. You hear such stories...

sparkletoes · 16/09/2008 16:45

Hi all and welcome new ladies!!

LOL RuthO at thought of you biting scary MW and running away! I think every unit has at least one in need of a shake!

Also a breast pump is a good thing to have IMO. For one so DH can help out with occasional feed and was also useful when DS started sleeping thru as I still produced and had to get rid!

I have been in turmoil all pm (again) as MW has told me baby is breech. Never had to worry about that with DS as he was head down from the start so now am having a wee panic that it won't turn and I'll need a section (esp as got so close to needing emergency one last time).

Obviously at end of day as long as baby gets out ok I will be delighted but had heart set on birth in MW unit this time so now researching turning the baby round in time...!

PInkyminkyohnooo · 16/09/2008 16:46

oh sorry rutho please email me at pinkymikny at mac dot com and I'll send you some images of what I have in stock. The site is not really showing what I have at the moment. I'm at my antenatal class thingy tonight but I'll reply as soon as I get chance.

Dozymare · 16/09/2008 16:47

love love how in an afternoon we have spoken about BH's, swaddling, sex and Cheryl cole vs Danni!!!! What a great bunch of ladies we all are....

londonladiesafternoontea still not heard rom BASIL sTREET Hotel - we need another option - any suggestions?????

Merrymary* did i READ right that your babies are being induced ont he 10th Oct?!

ChocOrange05 · 16/09/2008 16:47

Saurus I think we will feel like a milking cow being plugged in a pumped but if it means an extra few hours sleep.....

PInkyminkyohnooo · 16/09/2008 16:48

Oh I think a breastpump is a useful thing to have, I just thought we were talking about things you really need to have before the baby arrives, you could buy one a few weeks after or whenever, that's all I meant.

Dozymare · 16/09/2008 16:50

*I loved my breastpump - DH and I could not sto[ laughing for the first couple of times but as DS1 was in NNBU for a week it was vital that I did as I really wanted to bf. Didn 't bother pumping with DS2 nor will I have the time with this one, but can higly recommend the electric medala one - worked a treat for ME!

AS for 1st timers, I didn't hage MN for DS1 or DS2, can remember bringin DS1 home from the hospital, putting himn onto our bed and we both just lay staring at him in awe saying to each other - what do we do??!!! It's scary but just clicks into place..I promise!!!

PInkyminkyohnooo · 16/09/2008 16:50

haha choco I had one of the hired ones from the nct lady, great big piston pump thing, now that really was like milking time on the farm!

sparkletoes · 16/09/2008 16:52

Don't be scared of breast pumps it is weird at first but u get used to it very quick. My personal preference is an electric one (I have a Medela mini electric one). Simply because I tried to do it manually and got enough to fill... well a doll's tea-party tea cup!

Oblomov · 16/09/2008 17:02

DOZY, Dozy, Dozy, oh no, this is disasterous
No venue ?
I have an appointment for hair, nails and my friend to pick up ds from school, don't you know.
More to the point, I am more excited about your afternoon tea, that I am at the expectant delivery of ds2
What can I do to help ? I know of nowhere, becasue have never been a city girl. But e-mail me/ring me and let me help you find a venue. we are leaving it a bit late now, non ?

Oblomov · 16/09/2008 17:04

God, I can't wait to start using my mini medela electric breast pump.
Literally can't wait. You did all know that I was extremely odd, didn't you ?

MonkeyMargot · 16/09/2008 17:09

Pinky, Obs and Ceebee - firstly thanks for your words of wisdom.
Pinky - I like the tip about putting a muslin over the sheet to catch stuff - what did you call it? Posset ? Does that equate to dribble/baby vom?!
Obs you have a most calming effect. I am going to write down a list. I made one yesterday, but that was to tackle the logistical things which we need to do - ie. get rid of beds in spare room so we can start on the nursery etc.
I will now make another list about things I'm worried about and try and find the answers on MN. Thanks!
Saurus - will read the Miriam book - I've been lent that also.
coolkat - men are sooooooo hopeless. Don't even give it a second thought. Every time I get (v.subtle) highlights done, DH says it looks exactly the same. Which is sort of true, in that it's meant to look natural!

chocolategal · 16/09/2008 17:14

afternoon ladies!
i am so glad the chat has turned towards feeding, i couldnt get my head around BF but knew it was best for baby and have really tried to get over this in the last 7 months, i think i am going to try to BF and also to express and get baby used to both! (yep, im a 1st timer and i know you are all laughing thinking yeh right if only it was that easy!)
was it you ladybuzz that said you planned on expressing most of the time and feeding baby from bottles this way?

anyway, im sure your hair is lovely coolkat sparkle im having a little giggle about your teacup comment, i can just see that being me!!

chocorange i second your opinion on cheryl and ashley! lol!

oh, i have just been asked to be a godmother to my best friends baby, i am over the moon!
so suggestions for christening gift please???

MonkeyMargot · 16/09/2008 17:17

Dozy We could do the Wolsley, or the Lanesborough, or maybe the Savoy?
Re. Breastpumps - several of my friends have recommended the electric breast-pumps. Like choc I am planning on expressing once baby has got used to breastfeeding, so DH can do one of the night feeds (and I can snooze....). That's the plan anyhow! But does anyone know how DH is meant to warm up bottle of expressed milk?

ChocOrange05 · 16/09/2008 17:53

Dozy what was the budget for afternoon tea again?? I can have a look at venues if you like?

ChocOrange05 · 16/09/2008 18:05

LondonLadiesWotTea / Dozy Just found these two - Mandeville Hotel which costs £22.50 each or The Cadogan which also costs £22.50 but has a midweek offer of buy one get one half price so works out at just under £17 each.

Good website to check out - AfternoonTea.co.uk

chocolategal · 16/09/2008 18:14

oohhhh, just wanted to add the last time i was down in london i stayed at the mandeville and it was lovely

im still researching christening gifts......

oh and outfits for me!! yikes!

ruthosaurus · 16/09/2008 18:35

Good lord, ladies, one goes away for 2 hours and there's another 2 pages!

Thanks, Pinky, will email you asap, pregnancy brain allowing!

Poor sparkle re breech position, have you been told by enough people yet to spend time on all fours to get the wee 'un to turn? My MW said to get a birthing ball but added that she didn't know if it helped.

I don't know if the scary lady was a midwife or what - she had a badge but seemed a little, erm, untrained, shall we say.

I missed the conversation about sex? No fair!

PS Coolcat - Missed your induction news before. Holy crap - you have a definite date!
