Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 16/10/2008 14:00

hi gingersarah, sorry to hear you're feeling worried.

To reassure you - those are very good odds, particularly considering your age. (Not being rude, just that the odds for the average 35 year old, for example, before testing are around 1 in 350). This means your nuchal fold and your bloods were both very good.

Also, the blood results on their own can only decrease the risk by a factor of 20 - so if you just had the blood tests at age 35, then the BEST result you could get would be 1 in 6000 ish. This means your nuchal fold measurement was also good, as it's reduced it down further to 1 in 8600.

Does that make sense?

As for amnio - only you can make that choice, but given that amnio carries a 1% risk of miscarriage, there is a far greater risk of losing a healthy baby from an amnio than you have of your baby having Down's.

If it helps, our risk factor is 1:6500 and this is considered very good, so yours are even better than ours!

Personally, I would have an amnio with those odds, but it's not my decision to make. But it's worth remembering that an amnio will tell you for certain about chromosomal abnormalities, but there's still no guarantee that everything is ok with the baby. Maybe if you ruled out Down's you wouldn't be worry free, you'd just worry about other things instead, iyswim?

Sorry, hope I'm helping rather than making things worse!

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 16/10/2008 14:00

Sorry, I mean I wouldn't have an amnio with those odds!

LuLuBai · 16/10/2008 15:18

Hi GingerSarah - I think those are extremely good odds!!! You've got nowt to worry about.

My results were 1:2500 and I think that is really good (I'm 34 for what it's worth).

A girl I know was recently given a 1:10 likelihood based on the nuchal. I kept telling her that meant she had a 90% chance of NOT carrying a child with Down's. She had CVS and of course the baby doesn't have Down's.

gingersarah · 16/10/2008 16:15

Thank you LuLuBai and LittleMyDancing.
You are making perfect sense, and I am very lucky.

I think you are making a good point when you say perhaps I would just worry about other things instead. I need to switch off the control freakery (a classic gingersarah trait!) because there is no way I can control everything with pregnancy, let alone with a baby or a child, so the sooner I realise that and get positive the better. Thanks for the good advice.

I have had things all my own way for far too long and it's time to adjust - and it has to happen, so I should try to enjoy it.

DungunGirl · 16/10/2008 16:24

gingersarah

Your odds are extremely good. Don't worry at all!
The woman at the hospital told me that anything over 1:250 is nothing to worry about.

So over 8000, I think you are super low risk!

LuLuBai · 16/10/2008 16:33

Oh there are a million and one things you could worry about. I have a head full of obscure knowledge about the wierd and wonderful things that our babies could have (worked in the disability sector for years). But the odds are very, very strongly in our favour that they won't have any of them. Have to be positive!

(sorry I don't know if that helps - it is meant to though!)

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 16/10/2008 17:26

The mind works in odd ways - after what happened to us last time, I have been worrying myself sick that it will happen again. Then when we had a good scan result, I started worrying about other problems instead!

Have got midwife appt tomorrow and have convinced myself she's not going to find a heartbeat, based on no evidence other than being extremely pessimistic.

OddEyes · 16/10/2008 21:39

Hello all!
Midwife appointment for 1hr15 yesterday, so glad didn't take ds. Drained of blood but good to talk through everything, am under consultant care but hopefully mostly just seeing community midwives until later on.
seeing consultant in 2 wks, then scan 2 weeks later then a month till midwife and start needing jabs etc then so pretty regular from then on - feels like I am more pregnant now!
gingersarah your nuchal is better than mine and I am only just 30.
on job front - i have been working since April and still no contract signed, thinking they are hoping i will forget and then won't have to pay mat pay!

Hi all,

A lovely sunny morning here, a great day to be in a good mood - I hope it is working its magic on all of you.

Just wanted to say thank you again for all the reassurance.
have a good day, all.

LuLuBai · 17/10/2008 10:08

Glorious weather. I'm going to take DD to a lovely little playgroup this morning and then on into town to search for some over-bump maternity jeans.

I'm extra specially excited as we've just had a phone call from someone who thinks she knows the whereabouts of our cat who has been missing since October last year! We're going to see if it really is him at the weekend. Fingers and toes all crossed!

hopeful1 · 17/10/2008 14:12

Oh LuLuBai thats great news, do let us know about the cat!!

Gingersarah - those are excellent results, you dont need to worry unless its lower thatn 1:250!!

BabyBolat · 17/10/2008 14:55

Hey hopeful - how is everything today?

Gingersarah, those results really are great - the hospital have to be really careful so any sign of a possible problems they will have you in for further tests so if they aren't worried, you shouldn't be!

I am so relieved it is Friday today - still haven't had the maternity chat - think my boss is avoiding it!!!

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 17/10/2008 14:58

hello all,

hope all is well? had midwife appt today, took a while to find the heartbeat but finally tracked it down and it's strong and regular, so all good at the mo.

Heart scan in 2 weeks, fingers crossed

BarbarellaNz · 17/10/2008 15:00

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this thread and have just had 14 week scan (scanned every two weeks because am having triplets) and all is well so far.

GingerSarah - just wanted to say that my results were 1:550 because of my age (38) and the consultant thought those were 'very good' so I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Love, Barbarella XX

BabyBolat · 17/10/2008 15:42

Wow BarbarellaNZ, triplets - wow! you will definitely be a busy mum! when are you due?

LuLuBai · 17/10/2008 16:30

Wow - welcome BarbarellaNz - that is phenomenal. Triplets! Any idea what sort of pram you are going to go for? Will you have much help in the early days? Do you know the genders?

Sorry - too many questions. My mind is boggling at the thought of three babies.

LuLuBai · 17/10/2008 16:46

V. random question - does anyone else have really brittle nails at the moment? I've broken 4 today (I don't have especially long nails or anything).

Just wondering if this is normal or whether I should be upping my calcium consumption.

Bubbaluv · 17/10/2008 16:50

Barbarella, just the though makes me weak at the knees - are you excited?
Gingersarah, your odds are really good, don't panic. Not that I'm suggesting you should have one with such good results, but the risk of an amnio is nowhere near 1;100 anymore. Apprarently those stats were from the 70s and don't reflect the huge improvements made since then.
Glad to hear so many people are having such great scans! I keep forgetting I'm pregnant - clearly not a first timer then!

Bubbaluv · 17/10/2008 16:52

LuLu, I think you need more calcium - happened to a friend of mine.

purplemonkeydishwasher · 17/10/2008 20:16

Hi Everyone!
Finally had my scan today. My dates were spot on. I'm 12+4 today. Now due on 27th.
I feel so much better after seeing the baby. just to know that he or she is moving around in there (doing Kung Fu moves!)
I've been having nightmares all week about the scan so glad it's all done.

mathsmummy27 · 18/10/2008 14:08

hello all some lovely scan news and hopefully lots less nausea than a month ago.

I didn;t get the famous job but I'm quite glad as would have had a very hard decision to make!

PuzzleRocks · 18/10/2008 15:49

Oh wow, Barbarella, triplets! How exciting. Do you have any other children?

Purplemonkey and Mathsmummy, glad to hear some more great scan news.

BellaMummy · 18/10/2008 15:51

Hi, would love love to join the April '09 group. I am due with my 2nd on 11 April (I have a DD who is 2.2yrs - going on 22 years!).
I had my scan at 12+3 and all looks fine. I have a hideous cold at the moment and - of course - can't take a single thing that helps, so not feeling like a happy 'glowing' pregnant lady yet!
Look forward to sharing our pregnancies,
S
