BabyBolat · 13/10/2008 12:45

I was going to go for a swim on my lunch today but I think a trip to sainsburys and mince-pie eating is much more important!

BabyBolat · 13/10/2008 16:29

PuzzleRocks - just a quick tip - don't eat three in a row... yuk!!

PuzzleRocks · 13/10/2008 16:41

Noted .

I feel guilty
I just cant give up caffeine, I wasnt even that into it before I got pregnant but now I cant seem to go a day without a coffee or a coke no matter how hard I try. I could drink it all day (mmmmmmmmm). I only had it about once a week before and now its once a day and I feel really bad about it

PuzzleRocks · 13/10/2008 17:14

Sal - i'm drinking two cups of coffee. I believe the guideline limit is no more than 300mg per day and a cup of instant coffee has about 75mg, slightly more if it is filter. I'm sure you are fine as you sound well within this limit.
FWIW With DD I was drinking loads at the end and she was 8lb 8.5ozs.

Claireykitten · 13/10/2008 17:27

Well I had my first scan today and I have been dated at 13+5 with a due date of 15th April which is one day earlier than I had calculated myself.

We were running late getting to the hospital so I had to dash in on my own and leave DH to park the car and bring DS so I ended up having the scan on my own and then at the end she said that I could go and wait for DH and then we could go back in and she would scan me again so that DH could see baby which I thought was really really nice of her and baby performed beautifully and got the hiccups whilst we were watching which was really sweet to see. I was also happy to be told that I have a posterior placenta this tiem so I will hopefully be able to feel kicks and wriggles better this time round.

I have updated the list with my new due date.

LuLuBai · 13/10/2008 20:26

Hi SalBySea - don't feel too guilty about the coffee. I can't get past 8am without a coffee. I'm really trying to stick to just one (weak one) a day but allow myself two sometimes. And on a Sunday that is two proper strong filter coffees .

With DD I dranks loads more. She was 9lb1oz at birth but I do still feel really guilty about the coffee I had with her. She was a very active bump and used to kick wildly whenever I had caffeine. But that was actually very reassuring at times. I started bleeding at 35 weeks and while DH was calling the hospital I drank a strong coffee. The moment I felt her kicking and beating about I knew she was OK.

(N.B. I'm sure this is not the recommended course of action for pregnancy scares!)

purplemonkeydishwasher · 14/10/2008 09:57

hi all

quick question: is anyone else still feeling sick?

I have my scan on friday but think i am about 12 and a bit weeks. i was feeling fine for ages but the last 2 days I just feel horrible.

PuzzleRocks · 14/10/2008 10:01

I am still feeling sick although it is no longer 24/7. I have odd days here and there where I feel ok. I have still got that wretched taste in my mouth too.

BabyBolat · 14/10/2008 10:38

Hi Purplemonkey - I am with you on the sickness, am almost 17 weeks and while I am not continuously being sick like I was before, I have the constant bad taste in my mouth and am probably being sick once or twice a day which is a big improvement on before but still there!

SalbySea et al - I too am drinking much more coffee than ever before and coke (which I never touched before as I hated the stuff) but I think it has something to do with the energy - at the moment I will take anything that will give me a boost!!

Claireykitten congrats on the good scan - that was lovely of the midwife to do that and really nice for her to include DH - it makes such a difference when your midwives make that effort!

I really have no motivation to do any work today! hmmmm

purplemonkeydishwasher · 14/10/2008 12:40

glad i'm not alone on the sickness thing. man this sucks.
With DS i had some morning sickness, probably worse than this but otherwise i ws ok. this time it's all day sickness though not as often. but i've had a bad tummy bug a couple weeks ago and now have a cold. i am not having fun.

V1KK1M · 14/10/2008 14:56

Hi All,

Haven;t had a chance to catch up but thought I'd let you know that I had a nuchal scan last week and they said that they thought I was having a little boy. He did say it was only 80% accurate so we will have to wait and see at the 20 week scan.

Will keep you all posted and hope those who are still feeling bad are feeling better soon. I'm still off my food and not fitting into my trousers already - oh the joys

V1KK1M · 14/10/2008 15:05

Also I have an anterior placenta again - I was slightly disappointed but then again my DD didn't keep me up kicking all night so there are a few things to be thankful of!

The only thing I found was that my DH couldn't feel anything until I was about 30+ weeks.

LuLuBai · 14/10/2008 15:09

Yes, I'm still feeling sick off and on. But the off periods are getting longer and longer which is a huuuuuge relief. Last time I don't think I completely stopped feeling sick until 16/17 weeks.

gingersarah · 14/10/2008 15:45

Hello all, glad to hear about all good scan results.

Ha ha so much for worrying about maternity pay - I may be out of a job soon as it looks like the company I work for is about to go bankrupt.

does anyone know what happens about maternity pay / leave if I leave this job voluntarily while, say, 15 weeks pregnant? My new employers dont have to give me maternity pay do they, but do they have to give me maternity leave?
assuming this place doesn't go tits up, and I leave to take up another job (optimistically assuming I get one) do the current employers have to pay me maternity pay although I will be working somewhere else by the time I go on maternity leave?

Panicking seriously now - if anyone knows about redundancy or changing jobs in pregnancy please let me know.

thank you!

BabyBolat · 14/10/2008 16:31

gingersarah don't panic such an awful thing to have to think about now but sure there is something to make sure you are covered.

Check the government website www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/Expectingorbringin gupchildren/DG_10018741 to see where you fall - not sure on whether you will be entitled to it but you will definitely get the maternity allowance (£117 a month) if you don't fall in to the right time boundaries.

If the company is going bankrupt - what are the rules on redundancy and support packages? They will have something in your contract as they (should) be covered by insurance for this, not sure what happens if you leave voluntarily tho!

Really sorry you have to deal with all of this and sorry I can't be more help! Good luck!

Claireykitten and V1KK1M - my midwife didn't say anything about my placenta - should they have done?

LuLuBai · 14/10/2008 17:18

Gingersarah that sounds grim. But as BabyBolat says at the very minimum you will be entitled to £117 a month.

You'll have to scour the fine print of your contract to see what else you can get.

If you start a new job while you are pregnant your new employer legally only has to give you minimum entitlements but may offer more as an incentive at their dicretion. I started my last job while pregnant with DD and found myself in this situation.

Gave it up for the far more knackering and appallingly badly paid (but obviously v. rewarding) job of a stay at home mum.

PuzzleRocks · 14/10/2008 17:19

Lulu - isn't it a week?

Juliette108 · 14/10/2008 18:21

Gingersarah
I am in a similar boat, in that I am starting a new job next week, when I will be 15 weeks pregnant. As far as I understand, I won't be entitled to actual maternity pay from my employer. I don't think I am a thicko, but I always find it really hard to work out what I am entitled to.

There is a Sure start maternity grant available is you are unemployed.

V1KK1M · 14/10/2008 19:51

Babybolat - Last time they didn't mention the placenta until the 20 week scan as it can move as your uterus grows.

As long as it is not low then it isnot a problem. Mine being anterior just means that it is on the front wall of the uterus, therefore cushions the baby movements and kicks from my outer stomach. Last time I didn't feel anything until 22 weeks, but who knows this time!

With regards to the job thing - if you are in employment you can receive maternity allowance if you are not entitled to maternity pay. If you do start a new job all the co has to do is give you the time off, not pay you anything - it's rubbish!!!

conkertree · 14/10/2008 20:22

i'm in the same boat with my job - company might be making people redundant soon and i think i would be fairly high up the list so am getting nervous. But have also applied for a new job as I'd rather have something lined up if it does happen.

In one way, I dont mind the reduced amount cause my current employer only gives the minimum anyway, so i'd miss out on the 6 weeks of 90% pay, but go down to the 117 a week after that anyway, so its not the end of the world if i miss the 6 weeks pay - although would obviously miss it.

find it odd to read about people being nearly 17 weeks pregnant cause i'm only 12 - seems like a long way apart. but the time is going reasonably quickly just now - i love this time of year.

BabyBolat · 14/10/2008 20:27

Puzzlerocks - you're right it is a week so GingerSarah you shouldn't actually lose out on all that much compared to statutory (only the first 6 weeks) and hopefully Lulu is right and they will offer you more as an incentive to stay on - they can claim everything back so it's not as tho they are missing out on anything!!!

Juliette, I think they do make it really difficult to understand!

Thanks V1KK1M - will ask them at the next scan!

Hope everyone is feeling OK this evening - I am wondering if 8.30 is to early for bed....

gingersarah · 15/10/2008 07:58

Hi all

Thanks to BabyBolat, Juliette, LuluBai, V1KK1M and conkertree about the job thing.
I think it is so hard to read those sites when you are panicking. I have had another go and now I think that if you are working for someone 15 weeks before your due date, that someone has to give you SMP - which is all I would ever have got here. Does that sound right?
Juliette, did you tell your new employers you were pregnant when you applied for the job? (did you know?) Does anyone have any tips for the best moment to slip that one in?
Thanks again everyone, it is good to talk to people who have changed jobs, it makes me feel less stuck.
Have a good day everyone
