BabyBolat · 03/10/2008 16:17

Our midwife said she was pretty sure what the sex was at the first scan but I asked her not to tell us. Although having said that, I did see some beautiful clothes the other day and was really sad that I wouldn't be able to buy anything until after he / she is here (although I still think the surprise will be worth it!) At least I hope so.....

mizzannie · 03/10/2008 16:29

hello hello
i have had my maternity leave/pay chat at work. did you know you accrue holidays while you're off on leave? is pretty cool, so you can tack on your hols before or after your leave.
does anyone else get a bulk sum if they return to wk?
that is all my exciting news!!

brettgirl2 · 04/10/2008 10:11

Had scan - everything looked fine have added to list. In terms of maternity pay I think that most companies just provide the minimum. I found out about the holiday thing a couple of weeks ago which did cheer me up a bit.

brettgirl2 · 04/10/2008 10:13

Is anyone else feeling a bit strange that loads of people now know they are pg? I'm finding it a bit hard to adjust to - I "came out" after I'd had my scan on Monday and now it seems that everyone at work knows (there are lots of pregnancies in the company at the moment so it's a bit of a talking point)

SalBySea · 04/10/2008 14:56

2 more sleeps till scan - I'm really anxious - was a bundle of nerves before my dating scan too

surprisenumber3 · 04/10/2008 15:18

Hi Sal - what scan are you having?

I am having a nuchal scan on tuesday and I'm worried sick too xxx

SalBySea · 04/10/2008 16:40

I ticked everything so nuchal fold and all the blood tests

I'm mainly anxious about MMC - although I've had no spotting and lots of symptoms. I just wanna see the heart beat

Gemzooks · 04/10/2008 20:40

hi all,
hard to keep up but glad everyone is having lovely scans! Good luck Salby sea! I had the nuchal fold one too and got a result of one in 772.

I'm now running up against the Dutch system (all natural, encourage home births etc, and heard an awful lot of horror stories from other expats about being left to push for hours on end etc), so nearly cried when the horrible woman at the blood lab said I couldn't go there because I had the wrong insurance, so I got my pregnancy hump on and said 'ok, I won't have the blood tests then, ' and she said 'if you don't have the blood tests, you won't be assisted with the birth!" What a horrible old trout!

am now 15 weeks so next scan looming, I really want to know the sex but DH doesn't, so hard to know what to do. I have a silly superstition that if I indulge myself by finding out the sex, the birth will be harder. Stupid or what?
Is anyone in similar position, i.e. DH doesn't want to know?

toastnhoney, there are a lot of threads and info on SPD, don't ignore it as it can get worse.

brettgirl2 · 05/10/2008 08:57

Salbysea - I think most people worry about this. In my case my pg symptoms seemed to completely disappear the day of my scan and I was practically shaking going in but everything turned out to be fine - good luck. I'm glad I didn't have nuchal to worry about too - round here they just do bloods, still not 100% sure whether to have them or not.

13 weeks today..... Second trimester is here!!!!!

surprisenumber3 · 05/10/2008 15:31

I ticked everything too Sal. They said to have the bloods from 9 weeks and I had them when I thought I was 10+4 and booked the nuchal scan for when I thought I was 12+4.

However, at my dating scan on friday I was put back by 8 days so now it turns out I had my bloods at 9+3 and at my scan on Tuesday I will be 11+4. I really hope this is okay.

I have since read that you should be 10 weeks for the bloods (although my letter said I should be at least 9 weeks) and 11+2 for the scan so I am just inside that.

conkertree · 05/10/2008 17:40

hi everyone - back from a weeks holiday - was great to be with ds every day and he loved the swimming pool at Centre Parcs. Refused to go in his buggy as well and wanted to walk everywhere - although he cant walk yet - so meant things took a long time - but was great.

mizzannie - the tens machine you will probably get a million different opinions on. I liked it and I will use it again this time. I like to have things to distract me so while each contraction was going, I could think about what setting the machine should be at, and if I needed a boost or not, and then before you knew it, the contraction would be over. It was kind of a buzzing at your back that I think works by distracting your pain sensors. I definitely felt that it reduced the pain - dont know how much of that was in my head but it worked for me anyway.

will catch up properly later. sorry to hear about natty but good to hear everyones else's scan news. Mine is on Thursday. Nervous but excited.

ToastnHoney · 05/10/2008 18:04

Thanks guys, just read up on the SPD thing. I'll definitely go to the doctor if the pain gets worse.

Good luck to everyone who has a scan this week - hope they all go well and you enjoy the magical sight of your baby wriggling around inside you!!

gingersarah · 06/10/2008 09:39

surprisenumber3- my scan tomorrow (Tuesday) too. I think it's for everything but they don't seem to be great communicators. This worries me as I don't have a clue about anything and might not know the right questions to ask. Anyone else in this group at Mayday in Croydon?

I went on a trip for work on Friday and it was hard - I had breakfast just before 7 and then nothing, not even water, till 2. I had emergency flapjacks in my bag but was too shy to get them out because the colleague I was travelling with is one of those who doesn't seem to need to eat or drink. Stupid, yes... I don't know why. By the time I was near some water I was lapping it up like a dog at a festival.
I was so glad to get home that night. I almost fell to my knees and kissed the ground.

It's hard to concentrate at work - I have to be tough about things that don't seem to matter much at the moment and it is hard to motivate myself to go into these meetings and fight battles. There seem to be so many people in this industry who get off on fighting and feel they have to challenge everything almost as a point of honour. I just want to sigh and say, "Please can you just do it, rather than make me force you to do it after an hour's discussion..." Who else is struggling with work and do you have any energy tips?

Sorry to go on about me me me me me. I love to come here and see all your posts as it makes me less in a bubble.

Have a good Monday, all April-mums.

LuLuBai · 06/10/2008 10:18

Hello - haven't been on in ages. Went away again for a wedding abroad. Just been reading all the posts. Welcome GingerSarah.

Am delighted as day by day I am starting to feel better. Still having the odd off day but the overall trend is good.

Gemzooks - yes I am curious about the sex, but as I didn't find out with DD I feel I should do the same this time. Somehow I feel I should try and treat both pregnancies in the same way in the interests of fairness.

However DD needs a new grobag and a new winter coat and I am wondering if I should hold off until I know the sex of the baby so that I either buy stuff that is gender neutral so that it can be passed on to a little brother or buy something a bit more girly if it's another girl (seen some gorgeous coats that are definitely girly).

Last time I had a reasonably strong instinct that I was having a girl, but haven't felt anything yet.

SpringySunshine · 06/10/2008 13:44

Hello everyone! I'm new to MN & at about 13 weeks now. Sickness is dying down a lot & I'm actually developing a proper bump! Have my first midwife appointment tomorrow (been rather slow to get going!) but the doctor currently estimates a DD of the 12th. I'm waiting for my first scan appointment to come through at the moment, so it may change, I guess. So excited! I hope everyone else is doing okay & beginning to enjoy the 2nd trimester let up!

(Do you think it's wrong to seriously hurt people who insist on asking 'was it planned?' - I get the feeling it probably is, but my hormones would like to set about them with a heavy object...)

mumsoon · 06/10/2008 13:51

Hello - just quick update from me. Hope you are all very well.

I wondered if anyone has a giant stomach like me? I am only 12+3 and look enormous! I'm not a very large person, 5'4" and was a size 8, but my stomach now has ideas of its own! I compared myself to the woman in my pregnancy book and I look a whole trimester bigger! Oh well.

My scan is coming up on Wednesday, I am both nervous and excited.

Starting to feel less nauseous but more hungry, just had two lunches...

Wishing all April Mums a happy day.

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 06/10/2008 14:05

Springy - I think there's a special hell reserved for people who comment on the size of your bump, either large or small; people who ask you if it was planned; people who ask if there's two in there; people who say 'I bet you want a boy/girl' (delete as appropriate); people who think they can just touch your stomach whenever they feel like it; and people who tell you birth horror stories.

And students.

They have nothing to do with pregnancy, there's just hundreds of them all over the area I live and work and every autumn I want to mow them down with a big truck. (I may be feeling a tad intolerant at the moment.....)

Glad to hear people are doing ok and the sickness is generally easing. I'm counting the days until my next scan, and have felt some little movements every so often, which is reassuring. Good luck to everyone having scans this week!

I took the job I was umming and ahing about recently, and am just waiting for them to give me a start date, they seem to be dragging their heels a bit. Am going to ring them tomorrow and see if I can hurry things along a bit.

Have a lovely day/week ladies!

mumsoon · 06/10/2008 14:44

Welcome SpringySunshine x

Bubbaluv · 06/10/2008 15:08

Welcome Springy!
I didn't get much in the way of commenting/bely patting last time, but I wonder if it will be different now I've moved out of London and people are generally a bit more chatty with strangers?
My main gripe at the moment is that I am having huge cravings for sashimi!! The problem started last week when we went out for dinner (all dishes shared around the table) and a beautiful plate of sashimi was ordered. I had said "yeah, go for it, I don't mind!" But then they left 2 peices sitting there and it was pure torture!
Have not been able to stop thinking about it since. If DH hadn't been there I would have eaten it too!

surprisenumber3 · 06/10/2008 16:03

welcome springy!

People keep saying to me 'bet you're hoping for a girl - fingers crossed' - and I want to scream at them! Yes, I have 2 DS's and a DSS, but SO WHAT??? I love little lads. Yes, I would like a little girl, but I would also like a little lad. I have learnt to bite my tongue and say nothing but inside I am going mad!

Well I have my nuchal fold scan tomorrow. DH and I going out for lunch after so hopefully will be a nice day.

Will let you know!

Hope everyone is doing well.

At the moment I just want to eat cream crackers, grated cheese and pickled onions all the time!

SalBySea · 06/10/2008 17:55

well I had my scan - the sonographer said everything was fine and the heart was beating and all that but I feel utterly deflated as it didnt move

I really wanted to see a heart beat in a lively bouncey baby and now, although its great about the former, I dont feel reassured at all

I got up, bounced up and down, rolled around, went to the loo, ate chocolate - and all it did was flop on its side after being on its back (which was prob more to do with gravity than anything else)

LittleMyDancingWithTheDevil · 06/10/2008 18:17

aaaah, SalbySea, how disappointing for you! Ours didn't stir either, despite the consultant wobbling my tummy (how dignified ) with the scanner to try and wake it up.

He said they sleep for up to ten minutes at a time, so yours was probably having a little nap. Maybe it means it will be a good sleeper when it's born! Something to hope for!

Really glad you saw a heartbeat, anyhow.

Gemzooks · 06/10/2008 19:30

sal, I agree, it's probably a sign it will be a contented baby who sleeps well!

bubbaluv, I ate a lot of sushi because I really fancied it, when pg with DS. This was in Kazakhstan where I was living at the time, and was probably not advisable. However, women in Japan eat it when preg. As long as the place is a reputable restaurant, I don't think it's dangerous. same with french cheese. However, with this preg I am being very 'good' because of 12 weeks' miscarriage last time, not caused by food but it takes away your breeziness somewhat, so resisting sushi (even though really fancy it once more).

mumsoon, I look enormous, have done for a few weeks (15+3). I think it shows more if you have narrow hips as the only way to go is out..

went to midwife today, couldn't really concentrate on any of it as DS was acting up, but we heard the heartbeat which was reassuring. Still don't know whether I can handle the Dutch homebirth and no epidural system, so looking up hospitals which do have the epidural here, and hoping a second birth will be quicker..

Bubbaluv · 06/10/2008 20:01

Gemzooks, don't worry I eat TONNES of sushi, but just steer clear of the sashimi. I agree it was probably totally fine as was in a lovely restaurant, but DH would not have been impressed. I ate brie etc during last pregnancy as well, and smoked salmon, and rare meat and oysters! Should have just had the damn sashimi shouldn't I - humph!

Bubbaluv · 06/10/2008 20:05

Don't worry Sal, You can bet it will be doing cartwheels at the anomoly scan! How long until your next scan?
