First time mums expecting Spring babies

FlirtyThirty · 19/08/2008 11:38

Hello!

I'm expecting my first baby on 24 April. I'm currently only 4+4 but have NO symptoms at all! Have just retested as I'm convinced I've imagined it!

Went to Dr yesterday to share the news and have to wait for hospital 'choose & book' paperwork so that I can arrange first scan for around 10 October.

There seems to be so many decisions to make all of a sudden...

Anyway...just wondered how you other first timers were finding things...or your other halves for that matter. Mine is still in total shock in spite of this being a planned baby!

Hi all

daisyj - thanks for your kind thoughts and advice re: a note, I was in tears on Sunday as it really all seemed too much. I heard from the girl on the top floor on Monday and it seems that middle floor have had a go at her as well. We have agreed to say nothing for now but if there are any more comments we will let each other know and speak to the middle floor as a united front.

Brightside - glad to hear you are feeling better after 'orrid bug. I have no leaking yet but have come up in horrid rash on chest and neck. After being nagged by DP and two bosses (both mums) I am going to GP tomorrow to get it looked at. Can't be measles or rubella as I'm immunised and I've had chickenpox - I think it's stress from ghastly neighbours!

Rosa - poor you with the MD, what an appalling excuse for a man he is! I'm sure that, under employment law, he is not allowed to make comments like that - has sex discrimination written all over it as far as I can see! Good to hear you have a supportive colleague to chat to, if you want detailed advice on the situation there are bound to be plenty of sources on the interweb as well as the employment issues board here that Brightside mentioned.

Hope everyone's well - off now as supper has just arrived, fish and chips for a treat!!!

Hi All

Littleduck sorry about all the problems you've been having with your neighbours. Sounds like they're being very unreasonable. It really is stress you could do without just now. Have you managed to smooth things over with them yet? If not I agree Daisy's idea of a note explaining that it was the builders in the other flat causing the mess is very good. Anyway I hope you manage to get it resolved. Also sounds like you've been working pretty hard recently (don't think I could cope working til 9.30), so hopefully now January is almost over you'll get a chance to slow down a bit.

Rosa that's terrible your MD is treating you like that. What size is the company you work for? Is there an HR department you can discuss the issue with? It just makes soooo mad people treating pregnant women this way . Like we don't have enough to deal with. Does he realise that you could quite easily have had the baby or even be in labour at the time of said meeting! I definitely think you are right to stand your ground and explain why at 38 weeks pregnant you will be unable go in for the meeting. Obviously going forward your child will be your main priority and from what you have discovered about this man's dreadful attitude it's probably best to make that clear to him now. Anyway glad you're feeling a bit better after your lovely lunch - mmmmm penne carbonara (could easily eat some now and that's after dinner and a bag of mini creme eggs) .

Brightside sorry you weren't feeling well but glad you're better now. Not experienced it myself but think the leaking boobs is perfectly normal at your stage - just been reading the Jools Oliver 'Minus nine to one' book and she said she started leaking around six months. Look at it as a lovely sign your body is getting prepared for your baby's arrival (may change my mind about that when getting to grips with breast pads etc. myself) . Our scan on Saturday was amazing. Baby had it's hands in front of it's face at first but after a bit of rolling onto my side the sonographer got some really good views. Was fantastic seeing our little person - everyone says he/she has my nose! Saw our baby yawning, sticking its tongue out and blinking. At one point it looked like it was waving . What I like best is the fact we have the DVD to watch again. Have watched it several times now and I keep noticing new little things each time. Looking forward to showing it to our child when they're older too.

Hi to everyone else.

pinkadink · 27/01/2009 22:02

Oops didn't refresh the page and missed your post Littleduck. Sounds like the middle flat neighbours are getting a bit too wound up about things and rather than speaking to you and the top flat neighbours reasonably to sort things out they are going over the top about it all. Also seems a bit odd sending their mother round about it rather than speaking to your DP face to face themselves . Hopefully things will calm down but try not to let it stress you too much. Unfortunately some people just like being difficult.

daisyj · 28/01/2009 09:27

Aww, pinkadink, that's so cute. Am of your DVD. I didn't realise when we had the 20-week scan how long it would feel between seeing Bo and meeting him/her properly at 40 weeks. I can see why some people pay for an extra scan at 30+ weeks. I would too, if we had any money!

littleduck - glad you've got support from your neighbour - I guess that puts the other neighbours' stupid behaviour into perspective. Pinkadink is right - how bizarre that they sent their mum round - they are clearly quite odd .

rosa7 · 28/01/2009 11:01

morning all!

thank you for all your messages it so nice to have your support!

I did speak to HR about it - I work for a small/medium size company (about 200 people) and HR lady was shocked into silence and then said... "I don't know what to say"...

Very helpful indeed! They know what he is like of course and have had to play things carefully in the past I am sure.

My closest colleague has said that she will come with me if I have to go and see him again which is just the relief I needed. Its one thing to be faced with it - but another to imagine it might happen again...so at least I feel a bit protected there. Hmmm... I am, literally, counting the days til I'm out now. its 12!

Brightside I've had the "lovely leaking"!! I thought it was good fun! It stopped after about 2 weeks. Its a funny one as only seems to happen to some of us!

pinkadink your scan sounds sooooo lovely! we are considering finding out the sex of the baby at ours in 2 weeks (shhhhh... don't tell the grandparents!!). Well, we've waited so long but the curiosity is getting the better of us!

littleduck I'm sorry to hear of your building story and glad that the top floor people seem reasonable. This kind of thing, on the home front, must be very hard to forget about. I hope that the situation has reached its head and will only improve from here on...

wishing everyone a great day!!

evs34 · 29/01/2009 10:55

hi all. sorry been away for a while. hope all is well.

ROSA - he sounds like an idiot!

nothing to report really. seem to be growing by the day ( 30 plus 2 now). started nct classes which are pretty rubbish but good to meet people so will stick with them.

only 13 days left in work. hooray!! cannot believe how quickly the time is flying by. we have been doing lots of shopping and i ordered a lovely changing bag from pink lining yesterday ( v girly indeed!). all seems v real now.

have you all packed your hospital bags? i must start thinking about it. any tips? mine would be to include a mirror so you can watch the head crowning!

love to all of you, bumps included. evs xxxxxxx

pinkadink · 30/01/2009 17:00

Hi All

Rosa it's unfortunate the HR lady wasn't very helpful but at least you've flagged the issue with her and it seems they know what he's like. It's good that you have a supportive colleague who you can take with you if you have to deal with him again - just 10 days for you to go now! My countdown is currently at six weeks. Really can't wait to finish either, but luckily I should be able to take a day off a week from now to then, so that should help a bit with the tiredness.

Evs lucky you with only 12 days left in work. We've also been doing lots of shopping . Have ordered the nursery furniture. This is it www.mamasandpapas.co.uk/product-madison-range-ivory-save-up-to-30/361203310/type-i/. What do you all think? I'm really looking forward to getting the baby's room all organised but really need to have a bit of a clear out of old furniture and general things in cupboards that seem to take up a lot of space! I've also been gradually adding bits and bobs to my hospital bag. Mothercare currently have an offer on Tommee Tippee breast pads which I've heard are really good so I stocked up on those yesterday. Also think I'm going to buy one of those gel pads you put in the fridge to provide relief on your bits afterwards (though not sure how effective it'll be). The April '09 thread had some good tips on what to pack in your hospital bag at one point (I lurk there sometimes but it moves so fast I never manage to post on it). Not sure about the mirror idea to watch the head crowning. Think it would be lovely to see your baby enterning the world and I'd have no problem watching someone else give birth, but not sure if I could cope with the pain of the crowning and seeing it at the same time IYSWIM. Oh well I could always pack one and see how I feel.

Hope everyone else is well and wishing you all lovely weekends .

Bicnod · 30/01/2009 21:05

Hello lovely spring mums... sorry i haven't been around so much, things have been really busy at work and i seem to have hit a wall of tiredness again now i'm into the third trimester.. SO tired, keep falling asleep on the train on the way home... not really been through the blooming stage yet - i really do think that's a myth!!

littleduck - really sorry to hear about all the stress with the middle floor... neighbours can be such a nightmare really hope things get better soon x x x

rosa i CANNOT believe your boss - what a complete twat. i'm glad your colleague said she would go with you to speak to him again... but i also can't believe that your HR department didn't do anything... that is so crap . have you got a countdown chart for maternity leave? you should cross off the days - it makes them go faster!!!

kingston girls - so are we going to manage a meet up on on weekend of 14/15 march? who can make it? would love to compare bumps

mini bicnod is pretty much doing somersaults all day little tike... he/she never stops moving... and gets hiccups all the time which is realy cute...

i'm so convinced this baby is a boy - i will be truly truly shocked if it turns out to be a girl... anyone else who is having a suprise got strong thoughts either way?

by the way, has anyone heard from flirty? i'm worried as she hasn't been on this thread for a while and the last time she posted she had just been in hospital... just wondering if anyone knows if she is ok?

right... i'm off to cook dinner... happy friday everyone x x x

girlylala0807 · 31/01/2009 20:45

Hi all,

im sorry some of you seem to be having a hard time.

10 weeks to go and ive been told ive got a frozen shoulder. Im so upset, im in constant pain which is a nightmare. It could last for months...Iwont be able to carry bub in a sling, i wont be able hold him or her either.

Im just tired and emotional and fed. The birth of my first baby will be totally spoiled by this.

Sorry ignore me. Im just seriously cheesed off.

Bicnod · 01/02/2009 21:04

Hey girlylala - so sorry to hear about your frozen shoulder... it sounds awful

Have the doctors suggested physio or anything? Maybe you could try seeing an osteopath?

How many weeks are you at the moment? Sending lots of hugs x x x

girlylala0807 · 01/02/2009 21:30

Hi Bincod,

im 30 weeks tomorrow. All emergency doctor sai was oh dear..could last up to 18 months..cant help as your pregnant. I later got some paracetamol and codine which is helping today.

Not in so much pain now, going to see gp tomorrow maybe she can be a bit more help.

Trying to do all my uni work by typing with left hand...im not so good at it.

Thanks for the hugs, how are things with you?

Bicnod · 01/02/2009 22:00

Hi girlylala

That sounds pretty unhelpful - hopefully your usual GP will be a bit more useful tomorrow... I would push for a referral to a physio, or if you can afford an osteopath I've heard they can work magic...

Did they tell you what might have brought it on?

30 weeks tomorrow - that's really exciting... not long to go now... are you going to talk to the GP about your worries about being able to hold the baby/carry the baby around?

Things with me are ok... I'm very very tired - 27+6 today so still a long way to go, beginning to wonder how I'll make it through the next 8 weeks at work... I guess everyone feels like this at this stage - I'm sure I'll be fine!

Anyway - hope it goes well tomorrow - let us know what your GP says...

x x

girlylala0807 · 01/02/2009 22:41

Hey Bincod,

Me: how does this happen

Doctor: oh it sometimes just does.

Me: eh yea, thanks.

Will have a proper chat with gp, she has been fab so far. Let you know as soon as ive been.

I know what you mean about being tired. Just good practice for when babies here I guess.

Kalikaroo · 02/02/2009 15:16

Hi springmums! Sorry I haven't been posting for ages, but I'm trying to get everything done at work before going on maternity leave on 27th Feb. I'm soooooooooooo knackered......can't wait to sit on my bum all day doing nothing but eating and watching DVDs!! Bliss!!

I'm 31+3 now and the bump seems to be taking over! I'm waddling like a duck too. Can't believe I've only got 2 months left to go - scary!

I'm slightly worried at the mo' because my MW said last week that my fundal(?) measurement was at the high end of normal - does that mean this baby's going to a 10 pounder???? DH was over 10 pounds when born (though he's 6ft 3" now). I'm only 5ft 5" and was 6 pounds... oh dear....

teeheelaydee · 03/02/2009 10:35

Hello ladies, I hope you don't mind me joining you at this late stage, I have nervously poked my head round the door a few times but never posted here.

I am 30+3 with my first, due on 11/04 and am really feeling the need for some other first timers company. This is my 4th pregnancy so as you can imagine have avoided the ante-natal threads a bit and the April 09 thread has lovely ladies on it but so many of them and it moves a bit quick for me!

We are just getting serious about organising ourselves and like some of you need to clear the rubbish before the nursery furniture can be put together. Did get a pram on Sunday though. All your talk of hospital bags has freaked me a bit though - haven't even started it - mind still a while to go - I hope!

Haven't managed to catch up with everything that's going on with all of you but girlylala Frozen shoulder sounds awful and doesn't sound like you've had much constructive advice, hope your own GP can help more - I mean 18 months! and Rosa I have just started my mat leave and like you was counting the days as just worked at a totally unmum friendly place - it will feel better once you do finish, also just saw a post about light prams as I scrolled up - we got the icandy cherry which was the lightest we could find and that's why I really liked it, the carrycot is dead easy to take on and off too.

Anyway this was supposed to be quick hello, can I join you post and it's turned into a ramble!!

BrightSideOfLife · 03/02/2009 10:39

hello all!

What excitement the snow caused in London yesterday. I was snowed in and unable to get to work - so spent the day pottering around the house and sorting out some stuff in the nursery. Did everyone else cope OK? Anyone getting affected by the snow today? Wherever you are - I hope you are dry and warm.

kalikaroo I can imagine how tired you must be getting - how exciting to be counting down to the 27th February I believe that the fundal measurement is notoriously unreliable, so try not to worry about it too much. (Easier said than done, I know!)

girlylala So sorry to hear about your shoulder. I hope your GP was able to offer a solution or refer you to a Physiotherapist?

pinkadink Your scan sounds lovely - how precious to have that DVD to look at. How nice as well, for your child to have that DVD to look at when they are older.

bicnod I am also 27 + 4 this week and wondering how on earth I am meant to keep going for another 8 weeks at work. Besides the tiredness and the physical toll of the commute, the lack of motivation is difficult too! We are so lucky though - I was speaking with a colleague who is based in the US and she is pregnant with twins. She is getting 8 weeks maternity leave and in order to have the maximum time with her babies after the birth, she is working right up until she delivers. I have no idea how she will do it!

kingston Ladies March 14 / 15 works well for me. Anyone else available?

BrightSideOfLife · 03/02/2009 10:45

Sorry teehee I cross posted.

Welcome and a huge congratulations on your successful pregnancy! I have only lost one pregnancy before this, and cannot imagine the emotional strain of losing more. You must be thrilled and excited for your new little arrival.

Great news on the pram, we were given a friends old travel system this weekend and whilst it is sturdy and I can see the benefits - it is just HUGE and I doubt if I will be able to lift it into the car easily. I am already planning which new pram I will replace it with

Do you know what you are having? Apart from a baby (my usual response to the question) - boy, girl or surprise?

PenelopeS · 03/02/2009 11:34

Hello ....I am miserably technology-phobe so have just found this thread. Am due with first in mid April - still at work although snow bound today HURRAY(grin)

based in South east london I have had no luck at all in finding any yoga or pregnancy grups so be nice to keep in your loop for my final bit of pregnancy....

After reading some of the posts I am terrified I am shockingly underprepared, Should I pack my hospital bag now? I've barely got a bag never mind anything to go in it! (blush)

PenelopeS · 03/02/2009 11:34

see - I can't even figure out how to do the smiley things.....

rosa7 · 03/02/2009 13:09

Hi all!

welcome to penelope - don't worry you'll get the hang of it!!

and teeheelaydee! welcome too! oh, you better believe i have a big calendar in my office with the count down in huge writing and i am getting excited!

girly i am so sorry to hear about your shoulder it sounds so painful. 18 months? eeeeekkkkk i really hope not for your sake.

2nd day now of being snowed in and i'm ever so slightly worried about mat leave. i know that sounds so ridiculous and silly after being so desperate to leave work but its just hitting me that i have to get used to a whole new way of life and find a new routine. i can't stand just letting hours pass with nothing really happening and daytime telly is a major evil i'll be trying to avoid.

so today, on my practice mat leave i'm going to get some housey things done, with lots of sit downs too and perhaps a nap later on, and just see how I go...

new life here i come!!

(oh, i do know that once bub arrives i will hardly have time to scratch let alone wonder how to spend my days!!)

midwife appt on thurs. can't wait!

littleduck · 03/02/2009 21:41

Hi Springmums

And an extra big hello to Penelope, Teehee and Girlylala! Girlylala - sorry to hear about your shoulder, sounds horrid, hope you GP is able to help

Brightside and Bicnod - was 28 weeks yesterday, have been feeling more or less OK but a real struggle to get into work today in the snow/ice, was shattered by the time I got there. Was off work yesterday anyway with ghastly stomach bug picked up from DP - I was only really bad for Sun night and some of yesterday, he couldn't hold onto any food or liquid for 3 days and has lost 1 stone in weight! Still feel off my food and a bit nauseous but largely better.

Off to Roehampton tomorrow morning for 28 week appt - very exciting!

Would love to meet up with Kingston ladies 14/15 March, count me in.

Hope everyone is well and that anyone who isn't feeling great feels much better very soon.

Littleduck xx

Bicnod · 03/02/2009 21:45

Evening ladies... I was snowed in yesterday and so was DH so we made a snowman in the local park i love working from home . No such luck today - managed to schlep across London as the buses were running again - although it took 2 hours to get to work and 2 hours to get home again this evening

Girlylala - any news from your GP?

Teeheelaydee and PeneleopeS welcome to the thread... I couldn't keep up with the april ante-natal thread either! We should post an updated list - what are your due dates?

Brightside - hurrah, glad you can make 14/15 March - Kingston ladies - any other takers?!

OMG - only 8 weeks maternity leave?! That's terrible... poor lady. I've got 7 1/2 weeks left until my maternity leave starts and I'm counting down the days...

Right... I'm knackered so going to bed. I've got my 28 week check with the midwife tomorrow afternoon... Can't believe I'm 28+1 today (eek - less than 12 weeks til due date - argh!)

Bicnod · 03/02/2009 21:48

Sorry littleduck - crossposted. What a shame - I'm going to Kingston tomorrow not Roehampton or we might have bumped into each other... hope your tum gets better soon

So that's littleduck, brightside and me so far for 14/15 march meet up - it will be nice to compare bumps with some other first time mums

right - really am off to bed now...

x x

pinkadink · 09/02/2009 17:25

Hi All

It's been very quiet on this thread the past few days.

Teehee and Penelope congratulations and welcome. Teehee am of you having started your maternity leave. Really looking forward to joining you in a few weeks.

Girlylala sorry to hear about your frozen shoulder. It doesn't sound like much fun at all. How are you doing now?

Kalikaroo at my last midwife appointment the midwife measured my fundal height as 2cm bigger than average, after being an average measurement up to that point. Not really worrying about it though as I don't think it's very accurate and if it is a big baby there's not much I can do about it anyway .

Brightside am at maternity leave in the US. That sounds truly awful. Of course it could be better here but that makes me realise how lucky we are in comparison.

Littleduck glad you and your DP are on the mend after your stomach bug. It sounds like you had a pretty unpleasant few days. How did your 28 week appointment go?

Bicnod how did your 28 week appointment go? We still have snow here. Our street has had snow on the road for over a week now and it's still not been gritted! It's a minor road but you would think they would manage to get it done in a week. Haven't managed to get snowed in yet, but remaining hopeful for an unexpected day off work.

I've been doing a bit more shopping. Got a bargain Tommee Tippee steriliser and breast pump in the Asda baby and toddler event. Have also just ordered the pram online from Kiddicare. Got them to price match it from another site called Bambino Direct who were doing it a bit cheaper but who I've heard are to be avoided like the plague because their customer service is so terrible. So that's a few pounds saved. I had my 30 week midwife appointment last week and got on fine. Iron a bit low but still ok so will have to try and eat some more greens to make sure it doesn't get any lower. Got my health in pregnancy grant form too so going get that sent off ASAP. Has anyone got their grant yet?

Hi to everyone else .

littleduck · 09/02/2009 21:20

Hello Springmums

Hope everyone is well - I've popped in a couple of times over last few days but it's been very quiet so hope you're all OK.

Pinkadink good to hear all your news, let me know how Kiddicare are for client service etc as it would be good to know if they are reliable and helpful.

I bought a beautiful Humphrey's Corner cot mobile for Micro, it plays a little tune that makes me cry! I'm very soppy about those plinky plinky sounds that music boxes and mobiles make. Think I'm going to have to get over myself before Micro arrives as it's not going to soothe him or her any to have Mummy with tears pouring down her face whenever the cot mobile is switched on!

28 week appt went well. Measuring 29cm which is apparently fine, heartbeat sounded very strong, little head apparently somewhere below my left hipbone and little legs up by my right ribs which explains some of the kicks, hands by right hipbone which explains some of the little tickling feelings I get. Sometimes my bump goes rather lopsided with the bump bigger on the right hand side so heaven knows what Micro is doing then!

Going to sit on sofa and eat little creme caramel pot for pudding. Yum.
