First time mums expecting Spring babies

FlirtyThirty · 19/08/2008 11:38

Hello!

I'm expecting my first baby on 24 April. I'm currently only 4+4 but have NO symptoms at all! Have just retested as I'm convinced I've imagined it!

Went to Dr yesterday to share the news and have to wait for hospital 'choose & book' paperwork so that I can arrange first scan for around 10 October.

There seems to be so many decisions to make all of a sudden...

Anyway...just wondered how you other first timers were finding things...or your other halves for that matter. Mine is still in total shock in spite of this being a planned baby!

There are no allergies in my family, so I decided to eat nuts - not loads - just not avoid them. All I've actually had is a packet of nuts and raisins for a healthy snack, but all this talk of peanut butter is putting cravings ideas in my head !!

BinkyB · 16/10/2008 10:53

Brightside I want peanut butter too! That's the only thing I've missed really, think because like all the food I've eaten over last 2 months it falls under the category of 'kiddie food' which is all I seem to fancy - no steaks for me!

Bicnod about your scan, that's lovely news. So pleased you got to see lots - it's great fun, isn't it?

Evs I've gone for the DIY version of the bump band on my skinnies today - looped a hair bobble round the button and through the button hole. ahh, that's better! Won't last long though so going to buy some maternity stuff this weekend if I get a sick free day / the tonic water keeps working.

Also thought I'd share with you how someone commented that I'd timed my pregnancy (ha! we tried for 2 years so was hardly intentional!) perfectly... not only do we get the best TV (Strictly, X Factor, winter dramas etc) to coincide with our 'hibernation phase' but also our maternity leave will be over the summer. Yay! So there's a chance I will get my double buggy up to the park and not be entirely housebound

Kalikaroo · 16/10/2008 13:39

Hi all. Erm....I've been eating LOADS of peanut butter and other nuts on and off too all the way through my pregnancy so far. I had no idea that you weren't supposed to eat them...oops!

I asked my MW about things I should avoid and she said that I can eat whatever I like except for liver and unpasteurized cheese, so that's what I'm sticking to. It's funny because at this conference I'm attending at the mo' I was chatting to a Dutch lady who now lives in Norway and she said that it's amazing the difference in advice you get between countries. Apparently in Holland they are quite strict about things to eat, but in Norway they aren't strict at all. By they way, she's having a home birth (about 50% of women have them in Holland) but in Norway where her baby will be born, it hardly ever happens, so they think she's crazy!

FlirtyThirty · 16/10/2008 14:59

I'm back from my scan, ladies...and there's a baby in there! Hooray!
Sonographer said it was very well behaved as didn't move at all! Sleeping I suspect....long may that continue!

It was all over really quickly and whilst the sonographer was nice she didn't really spend any time telling us what was on the screen or really allow us time to study any one particular position. It was quite conveyor belt in feel to be honest. However, all that matters is that there is a baby with a heartbeat growing away. Baby is 6.6cm long and had a nuchal fold measurement of 2.1mm. I also had had the blood test done for combined testing, so all being well, we'll get the result by the end of next week. We have decided to wait to tell people until after we have that back - after this long, another week will make no difference.

I was really happy afterwards but sorry I hadn't had more time to study the graphics. The printed pics are not that great to be honest...one of them I can't even work out what it shows

Oh, and hubby...for the first time I think the penny has started to drop that this is really happening!

Hope you girls have as good a time!

PS. I have still not heard the babies heart beat I thought they would do it today...but no. Am now considering purchasing a doppler as another 2 months seems a long time to wait...

ChocolateEclair · 16/10/2008 16:35

Flirty and bicnod - so happy that your scans went well! How amazing to see your babies for the first time! Flirty - sorry you didn't get chance to see much though

I read the thread about the peanut butter - I think this is where I might have heard what I thought! I haven't eaten any peanuts or peanut butter whilst pg but have eaten cereal bars, nutella and crunchy nut cornflakes - all of which have nuts in right! Dp and I aren't very 'allergic' people tbh although I can't have penicillin.

I got my date through for my 20 weeks scan today! YEY! I hope it is really detailed to make up for not getting our 12 week one! (I will make sure to mention this!) Anyway it's on 6th November so not too long to wait! (3 weeks today!)

BrightSideOfLife · 16/10/2008 16:43

binky I do that DIY bump-band with a hairband on my jeans too It works well but I struggle to make the zip stay up! I have been caught out a few times

kalikaroo that is great advise your midwife gave you. It was very interesting to read about the Norwegian / Dutch maternity care. My best friend lives in Amsterdam (We are going to visit her this weekend - YAY ) and has talked about the homebirth policy. In the Netherlands, giving birth at home is certainly considered the norm (And she is jealous of the availability of an epidural on the NHS!)

flirty that is FANTASTIC news about your scan. Congratulations that everything is OK. It was useful to read your thoughts about the scan - my Dating / Nuchal fold scan is at Kingston next Tuesday so I have a better idea of what to expect. What did they say about your dates - have they changed?

FlirtyThirty · 16/10/2008 16:56

Brightside - Thanks - I'm relieved...and happy. My dates are bang on what I thought - 24 April....so try and have your knocked forward a week so we can have a peanut butter sandwich together!

On a separate note, have just heard a family member (we are a close family) is also due in April ...am slightly deflated to be honest...fell a little like she's stiolen my thunder...which I KNOW is stupid. I'll get over it...I feel awful even writing that down! I am happy for her!

Bicnod · 16/10/2008 20:16

Hey Flirty - congratulations on your scan so glad your ickle bubba is there and happily snoozing...

You, me and Brightside are all having babies at Kingston at practically the same time - how about a coffee (or something that won't make me throw up actually) at some point to compare bump sizes?

Jools1 · 16/10/2008 21:37

Lovely scan news Flirty

Perhaps we ought to think about a thread meet before too long ? I'm north of London, but could get a direct train down to Wimbledon to meet the Kingston ladies

Elpis · 16/10/2008 22:05

I too was keen on underwired bras but at 10 weeks they became unbearable, so I got myself measured at M&S. Now I have three non-wired and they are rather unsexy but so much more comfortable. The bra measurer said there was no difference between maternity and nonwired, by the way...

Flirty - glad yours was sleeping too!

I'm afraid I am eating more or less what I want, raw eggs and unpasteurised cheese excepted. I had crab cakes last night and sushi for lunch. Is that very bad? Apparently Japanese women don't give up the raw fish ... and a girl has to get her protein and fish oils somehow ... plus I need rare-ish steak for the iron. Oh yes.

lolianja · 16/10/2008 23:02

I have my 20 week scan at lunch tomorrow! Absolutely bricking it. Hope everybody's well. Wish me luck!

saz007 · 17/10/2008 09:39

Flirty and Bicnod Fantastic news about the scans ladies!!! I cant wait for mine now, I'm sooooo excited!!

Maybe I'm just being totally paraniod but I'm giving up steak until May. Thankfully I don't like stinky runny or blue cheeses - yack! But I think I will eat nuts, neither DH or I have any allergies, so I think we'll be ok.

I was told by my midwife and also a doctor to stop taking my Omega3 tablets, even tho they don't mention cod live oil or vitamin A at all. So I'm making sure I'm eating a salmon fillet and mackerel at least once a week

Guys thanks for the idea about using the hairband as a way to extend trousers, I will have to give that a go!

Lolianja Good luck for your scan!!

Thank God it's Friday!!! I'm off out on a team do tonight, but I'll probably fall asleep! I'm going to be using the old "I'm on antibiotics" excuse...just got to hope I'm not seen thru!

FlirtyThirty · 17/10/2008 09:53

Bicnod- Would be lovely to meet up for a cofffee with you and Brightside at some point. Perhaps a pre-Xmas mince pie and glass of non-alcoholic mulled wine somewhere in Kingston?

Elpis - I am eating sushi too. It is fine..read the Food Standards Agency advice here:
www.eatwell.gov.uk/asksam/agesandstages/pregnancy/#A219865
Basically, almost all the fish used in sushi in the UK has had to be frozen in transit so is fine. Smoking fish kills parasites too, so smoked salmon for example is fine also. The only fish you really have to be careful of is raw Atlantic salmon as they are notorious for parasites, eg worms. Enjoy otherwise!

CE - Can't believe your 20wk scan is so soon! Seems like yesterday you got your BFP! You're almost half way to Mummy-hood! My 20wk scan is on 11 Dec - will make for alovely Xmas if all is well!

Kalikaroo - Don't worry at all about eating peanuts unless you or DP have significant allergies, specifically peanut, asthma or eczema. All other nuts are fine. I'm only stopping as DH has bad eczema...but I'm munching away on all other nuts with glee!

Morning all!

My bag is packed for a long weekend in Amsterdam. I cannot wait!

Flirty and bicnod I would love to meet up for a coffee (or non-caffeinated, highly nutritious alternative?) in Kingston sometime. Unfortunately my weekends are filled until my holiday in November so my first free Saturday or Sunday would be the weekend of November 29th or sometime after that. It feels like ages away, but at least we would all have bumps by then? Are any of you doing the 'take care of yourself in pregnancy' class at Kingston Physio department? Or signed up for the antenatal exercise classes?

flirty I have been avoiding Sushi - what great news that it is OK if the fish is frozen! Yummy!

CE Your 20 week scan is so soon! How quickly that seemed to come around.

saz007 Good luck at the team do!! I had to think quickly yesterday when one of my colleagues was trying to get us to sign up the Moonwalk for charity next May. I couldn't exactly say: 'Sorry - I will either be 9 and 1/2 months pregnant and incapable of walking, or at home with my newborn '

Bicnod · 17/10/2008 20:26

Hey Flirty, Brightside and anyone else who fancies a get together in Kingston...

I'm not around weekend of 29 November unfortunately - how about we go for Flirty's pre-Christmas mince pies and mulled wine idea? What about the weekend of 13/14 December? Either of those days good for you ladies?

I might even allow myself a glass of alcoholic mulled wine by then (ooer!)

All this what to eat stuff is just madness I think. My OH has allergies and asthma, I am allergic to nothing (to the extent I felt quite left out as a kid haha) I read up on the peanut stuff and it seems to me that the jury's out. I have made the decision to go with "minor" exposure - in other words I am not being neurotic about where there may be "traces" because I just can't see how that is healthy. I can't stand peanut butter anyway and rarely actually eat peanuts. The other thing that I would be definitely careful about is pate - my Uncle had listeria recently from eating this and was very ill. I haven't given up eating bagged salad though as some places seem to be suggesting!

All my clothes are so uncomfortable but everyone seems to be telling me it is too early for maternity clothes - arrgghhh!!!! I am really looking forward to some comfort and clothes I can breathe out in. I might ask MIL what she thinks this afternoon (she'll drag me to the shops which will prob be good!)

Rayxx · 18/10/2008 18:46

Hi, I just joined mumsnet after my sister suggested it. She's expecting her third child in March. I'm expecting my first on 19th April. I've had my 12 week scan, and although it's supposed to make it more real, I can't seem to equate that picture with what's going on inside me! The baby wasn't planned and I'm a complete hormonal monster (even more than normal!), crying one minute and laughing the next! It's really good to read what you ladies have all been going through.

heverhoney1 · 18/10/2008 19:07

Welcome RAY - please be advised mood swings are a regular occurance with me too. I cry at EVERYTHING!!!

I had my scan on Tuesday but on Monday night I was crying to my DP that I was scared because I didnt feel pregnant. Then I remembered that I was- Constipated, bloated, nausius, over emotional, exhausted and achey!! Oh well maybe I DID feel pregnant after all!

Jools1 · 18/10/2008 19:26

Welcome Ray

a constipation tip for anyone who may be interested - I'd forgotten how good Activia bio yoghurt is - I have a big tub of that and have 3 big spoonfuls night and morning - I remembered it when I had a BIG problem with constipation this week and it has worked like a charm

Bicnod · 19/10/2008 10:40

Omigod - I am so shocked - I managed to go out to the pub for a drink (cranberry juice - boo hoo) with DH last night, then for a meal, got home at 10.30pm and watched a DVD the whole way through... and DIDN'T FALL ASLEEP!!!!!

Does this mean that FINALLY the 2nd trimester energy might be kicking in? I'm 12+6 today. Anyone else feeling like the mist is slowly clearing?

On the downside I puked yesterday morning for the first time in weeks oh well... i guess i can't have everything!

I'm tentatively hoping that I might not have to leave my own 30th birthday party (next saturday night) at 9pm after all!!

Bicnod · 19/10/2008 10:44

P.S. Welcome lou and ray - I too have been laughing hysterically one minute and crying the next... poor DH came home from work the other day to find me sobbing over the carrot soup because I'd forgotten to buy fresh coriander

lou1981 · 19/10/2008 11:38

thank you bicnod

i cry over everything imaginable then i cry more cos i think im soo silly lol
