I'm here - for a milisecond whilst DP plays with new Sat Nav. It says we're in Croydon, which given that we are in West Oxfordshire doesn't seem like the most promising start. Will check out the Christmas thread though - I started my Christmas shopping a fortnight ago (control freak, moi?)

Twiga · 29/08/2008 22:02

LT - aah the joys of sat nav! Impressed you've started on Christmas already.

rosmerta · 30/08/2008 09:02

lt sorry to hear about your dh & all the stuff afterwards, am very much in awe that you've managed to move on. I have a friend who's going through something similar atm and she's really struggling, hard to know what to do sometimes.

effie am sure everything will be ok, good they're keeping an eye on it though

veggie how disappointing for you, I hate it when you just fancy something but can't get it!

I actually managed to get a good night's sleep last night so am feeling much better today. We have our nephew staying with us so we're all off to Chessington today. Must admit, its funny seeing what its going to be like having a teenage boy

Anyway, hope you all have a good day, catch up later

Oh Christmas-aaah. We have BIL's wedding, my sister's baby and loads of family birthdays before mid October. Will just have to think about it early Nov. We usually go to a Father Christmas grotto locally where there is a steam engine, but will have to send DH and MIL instead of going myself this year. My parents are planning on taking DD to 'the Nutcracker' so at least kids will still get to do Christmassy stuff

Children are driving me mad this morning. Why are they so NOISY.

Veggiemummy · 30/08/2008 10:43

oh i wish our christmas grotto had a steam train, DS is very suspicious of Santa (he'snot keen on anyone in dress up clothes) i think if there was a steam train he may be enticed.

for us Christmas will be nice and quiet as vegetarians we don't go in for all the roasts we just eat anything we fancy concentrating mostly on the puddings and desserts we may have denied ourselves during the year (won't have much of a choice for me this year) It's kind of a tradition we had from when we were doing triathlons and training a lot so didn't have much naughty foods. So for us chrismas is a day for naughty food. Also mum will be flying over on the 29th so will prob have a special day when she gets here.

We have planned a camping weekend up in the peak district this weekend and are going to go ahead with it even with the dodgy weather as we figure this may be the last time we go camping for a while. Hopefully the weather isn't to bad and we can do some walking.

artichokes · 30/08/2008 11:09

Just a quick hello as we are leaving for the airport in an hour. Hopefully I will be back in 2 weeks with a lovely tan and nice tales of Sicily. Luckily I am feeling a little better today and I am feeling smug that we are flying out hte day before the terrible storm is supposed to hit!

I hope everything goes smoothly for you all over the next fortnight.

Veggiemummy · 30/08/2008 11:52

a storm, right better pack some more wet weather gear.

have a lovely time Arti hope it is amzing and relaxing for you. Italy is the best place to go when pregnant so much good food.

Verso · 30/08/2008 14:25

Off to the out-of-hours doctor in a mo as my feet swelled up rather alarmingly last night and I was seeing sparkles/spots in my vision. This morning my hands have also swollen up and I have a headache as well as the sparkles so better to be safe than sorry. Is probably just the hot weather and overdoing it with being back at work... I hope so, anyway! Wish me luck!

simmo14 · 30/08/2008 14:39

Verso
Hope verything goes ok at the doctors. Go and put your feet up and rest.
I occasionally get sparkles in front of my eyes- what is it? I thought it was to do with blood pressure.

reban · 30/08/2008 16:34

verso hope you are feeling better ... try and get as much rest as possible but i know that is easier said then done.

I have also started my christmas shopping already, having already done 2 christmas's heavily pregnant i know how particularly hard that is but being due on 20th dec is a whole new ball game! I have already asked for lists from dsis and dsil for all the neices and nephews and we also buy for a lot of friends' children and extended family, but i think everyone is expecting very little from us this year. I dont know what to do about xmas day itself though as normally we go to my sis for xmas dinner (with my mom, dad, sis and fam and me and fam) then we normally go straight to DPIL for evening and see DPs side of the fam (mom, step dad, sis (x2), brother and all the neices and nephews). So xmas day is always extremely busy but loveky as we get to see everyone on the same day, however not sure how i am going to feel about that if i have a very newborn or have gone over. I think the kids will go absolutely stir crazy if we attempt to stay in. Anybody else planning to venture out?

Verso · 30/08/2008 18:25

It can be BP, simmo - but it turned out (on the second reading) that my BP is totally fine. BUT it seems I have heavy duty bladder infection. Highly ironic as I actually went to see a nurse when we were on holiday about some symptoms - thinking I had cystitis - and she tested me and said I was fine! Appears all the Braxton Hicks and general feeling of knackeredness can be attributed to the infection. The test was off the scale [shocK].

Anyway - v relieved it's not my BP. He said the swelling is normal in this heat and because I've been trying to do too much and ought to rest more.

Christmas-wise I haven't started Christmas shopping yet but I reckon it's a very good idea - so thanks for bringing it up! We've told people we're not travelling. I travelled with DD at 7 weeks to a wedding and it was a dreadful journey. Scorching hot weather and the car we had then had no air conditioning. Then a night in a Travel Inn with DD sleeping no more than 45 mins at a stretch...

Luckily my Mum has recently moved near us so we will at least get to see some family on the day itself!

lowrib · 30/08/2008 19:14

Hi Verso, hope you're feeling OK, good to hear the ankles aren't due to high BP. My ankles and fingers swelled in the heat a few weeks ago, and the Dr said the same to me too.

My mum swears by literally putting your feet up to drain the fluid and reduce the swelling, and has made me promise faithfully to do this at lunch at work! As I eat at my desk, this means literally sitting with my feet up on another chair (I don't dare the desk!).

Twiga · 30/08/2008 21:51

Verso, glad to hear your bp is ok but poor you on the bladder infection no wonder you've been feeling yuk.

Majormoo - think it was you that said you were near to me, wandered if you could give me the chat on anything worth taking dcs to around Christmas time ie Christmas markets or anything - the santa's grotto you mention sounds cool, Christmas and steam trains, dd would love it!

rosmerta · 31/08/2008 08:57

verso glad they've finally found the problem, hopefully you'll start feeling better soon.

The mw said at my last appt that I have a low bp which is why I get dizzy when standing up or doing too much.

I haven't even started thinking about christmas yet, we haven't decided what we're going to do about seeing family or anything! I did try to take ds to see Santa last year but he got a bit freaked out and screamed his head off!

Verso · 31/08/2008 09:10

We 'met' Father Christmas unexpectedly in John Lewis at Bluewater and he loomed rather ominously - giving DD a complete Father Christmas aversion. She likes Christmas - but likes to remind us quite pointedly that she doesn't like him!

Am enjoying some peace and quiet as have just got most of Sunday lunch prepared (apart from the banoffee pie case to bake) and DH has taken DD to the bouncy castle so I can get on without her underfoot. Am feeling very domesticated, having done all this so early in the day... might even have time to improve the disastrous state of my pedicure!

rosmerta · 31/08/2008 09:16

verso I don't think I can even reach my feet now . Sounds like a lovely morning anyway. Dh is taking our nephew home today and ds is going with them so I have the day to myself - bliss!

OP posts:
majormoo · 31/08/2008 15:45

Verso hope the infection clears up soon. Glad your BP is OK.

I am having a relaxing couple of hours-DS asleep, DD at a party and DH out watching Chelsea at his brother's. Oh the peace and quiet.

Twiga to see Fr Christmas we have been to Amberley Railway museum the last couple of years, which has a steam train ride to the grotto, but also old fire engines etc to ride on. Website is www.amberleymuseum.co.uk. The only thing is it is very near to Christmas. The Bluebell railway is also a good day out (another steam train). I think I prefer Amberley myself, but the Bluebell railway is warmer as you are inside most of the time whereas Amberley is mainly outside.

Haven't been to any Christmas markets though I am afraid. Would love to go to one in Germany one year.

Not sure how old your DD is or if she is as obsessed with ballet as mine, but the Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty are on at 'the Dome.'

EffiePerine · 31/08/2008 20:01

majormoo: I love Amberley, went there on a work-related thing last year and enjoyed the train very much . I know one of the volunteers there and it is a very good place for all sorts of activities.

Verso: sorry to hear about the infection, good thing they caught it. Hope the antibiotics are kicking in. At least you won't have to worry about not drinking too much!

Twiga: thanks for the reassurance on the cord . The consultant didn't seem too worried on the growth as the baby is measuring big for dates anyway, but did a lot of detailed checks on the heart and brain (all looks fine, thank goodness). Am a bit worried about having early intervention as was all set for staying at work until mid-December! Have you got your appointments set up yet?

Veggiemummy · 31/08/2008 21:20

hi all back from a slightly rainy but nice weekend in peak district. It's so beautiful. Unfortunately all the camping grounds were booked out so we had go to a B&B which was ok but a bit expensive. But DS had a great time we took him and his little mate to Mam Tor and a otter sanctuary and a cave yesterday. DH and his mate went for a run up one of the hills there this morning, he had a great time was very jealous am so looking forward to being active again.

Verso i'm so glad they finally picked it up can be nasty if it goes to your kidneys etc. Have some cranberry juice with the Antibiotics and don't forget your yoghurt as you'll be on some strong antibiotics.

Effie working til mid december? when are you due? hope you can put your feet up at work too, you'll need to.

TheInvisibleHand · 31/08/2008 21:38

I can't believe I've just got to the end of the weekend more exhausted than I started...really not sure how we'll cope when the new one comes.

DH is having a work crisis so I had sole custody of DD for Saturday and then took her off to my parents today. But I have my own work crisis to get sorted so have been up all hours trying to deal with. Hoped to do a bit more today while my mum and sister took charge a bit, but DD was having an exceptionally clingy day...

I guess it does make me appreciate quite how helpful DH is most of the time!

Sorry to come on with just a self absorbed whinge.

Verso - sorry to hear about the BP, but glad its turned out to be an infection which can be sorted.

Veggiemummy - v jealous of trip to Peaks. DH and I used to go a lot (even as a day trip from London to get a walk in), but its been a long while since we've managed it .

Veggiemummy · 31/08/2008 21:50

Invisible wow a day trip from London, well would be well worth it, it's so beautiful. we are actually only an hour or 2 from the furthest most bit of the peak district. we stayed at Hope which is only and hour and 20mins from our house but we still stayed over night as had a bit longer then. We are going to have a day trip weekend after next as DH wants me to drive him up and drop him off so he can do a bit of road cycling around while DS and i go and have a cream tea somewhere.

rosmerta · 01/09/2008 08:05

veggie, sounds like a lovely weekend. My parents aren't that far from the Yorkshire moors so we go there sometimes for the day when we're visiting.

Invisible, ikwym about realising how much dh does, I hope you get your work crisis sorted today.

Dh has gone on a training course for 3 days today so I'll be doing the bedtime routine which is what he normally does. No doubt I'll be in bed about 30mins after ds!

Beans33 · 01/09/2008 09:56

Hi all - Verso - so glad your swollen feet and hands are ok and your BP isn't too high. And hope your bladder infection isn't too bad.

I've got a routine ante-natal appointment on Thursday and am asking about my swollen hands and feet and fat ankles (fankles as my DH calls them!). I've already had to take off my wedding and engagement rings and my trainers etc are really tight. I have put on quite a bit of weight, but I didn't think that much!

I also have a bit of a gross query and apologies for that, but I'm worrying about it. Hope no one minds. Sorry. I'm having a lot more discharge than usual at the moment and it's actually a bit smelly. I'm quite worried about it and feel repulsive as a result. Has anyone else had similar at all? Sorry guys.

kmp1 · 01/09/2008 11:01

Beans - yes I can relate to that - just in the last couple of weeks? I think it's normal but haven't asked...

Beans33 · 01/09/2008 11:28

Yes, literally in last couple of weeks. And I just feel so gross somehow. Bad enough being a fatty, but then to have smelly bits too is just mean!

do you think it's normal then, KMP? I will ask the doctor on Thursday anyway, but feel a bit comforted by that! Thank you.
