That is a genius idea! Definitely touch them back - hahahah! I love it - will definitely use it! Brilliant.

Bisou · 03/09/2008 13:45

Hello ladies! Well, it's been AGES since I last posted, in fact probably not since thread 2 or 3. I've been so busy with work that I had to have a little enforced 'holiday' from mumsnet as it was much too addictive! Anyway I'm back again cause I've missed you all so much, and have been making my way through the gazillions of posts - my goodness there was a lot! It's been really fantastic though, and I've laughed my head off at some of your great posts. Personal favourites have included Beans' "I'm worried I'm going to do a poo while I'm pushing and my husband will see", and the "full pant moustache" and Veggie's referral to a pop-outy belly button as "like a nose for my belly". You guys should have a career in comedy writing

Now please forgive me for this massive post, I've just got so much to catch up on (so I took a few notes as I was reading)...

Olipop, I think you wrote some time ago that you had been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid? I've got that too, and am on thyroid tablets for it, are you? I think it's important for the bub's brain development so you should get monitored for it during the course of the pregnancy. I get a blood test and an appointment with a specialist every couple of months here to check the TSH level (and even though I'm in Australia, the care should not be too different I would have thought).

waitinggirl - I read that you are writing dissertation on pregnancy & the voice? I'm actually a professional opera singer so if there's anything I can help with do let me know. Although I'm not sure when it's due or if I can be of much assistance! I have noticed a small amount of change with my voice, but not a huge amount.

Lowrib you could always change your name to LowriB if you want to avoid the "low rib" confusion? There's nothing wrong with keeping it as it is of course, it was just a thought!

majormoo I don't know if strep B is similar to strep G, but I was told that I had strep B last year. It was after having a MMC, and a D&C which they botched and left lots of tissue still in my womb - I came down with a horrendous infection and had to be hospitalised and eventually a repeat D&C. There was a very rude and insensitive gyno at the hospital who told me afterwards that I had it without even explaining what it was or how I'd come to get it! Anyway after a panicked call to my mother in Australia (she's a midwife) I was assured that it was actually not uncommon - many women are carriers already of the bacteria but unaware. Here they test all women for it as a matter of course in late pregnancy, and if it is detected they just give you IV antibiotics during labour. My mum said they may not even need to do that if the test comes back ok. Anyway do make sure your midwife explains it all to you at your next appointment, as sometimes not knowing what something is just makes you stress about it (at least, it does with me!)

effie and indith - thanks for the great links on slings. I'm really interested in them, so they were a great source of information. I'll have to see if there is somewhere here in Sydney that carries a good range, or if there is a sort of loan scheme or something so that DH & I can try them out and see what works best for us. Or I'll just buy some fabrics and make my own - it'll undoubtedly be cheaper!

artichokes, rosmerta and turniphead it was great to hear you recommend the Phil & Ted's pram as my sis-in-law is giving us hers, even including the attachment bit for the second kiddy! This is our first bub, but hopefully if all goes well I wouldn't want to wait too long for the next one (of course I may be being much too optimistic about our ability to cope with a child)

reban I'm sorry to hear about your gastric problems. I've had terrible reflux in the past and have even had to have prescription medication for it as it's a real issue when you're a singer and your vocal chords are inflamed from burning acids! I managed to finally find that the only thing that prevents it for me at night is eating really really early and then nothing else until I go to bed. I think my body just takes longer to digest food, so the "don't eat anything 2-3hrs before bed" becomes more like 4-5hrs for me. Also try to stay away from things that exacerbate it, like coffee, red wine (not that we're gettin much of that these days!), tomato based foods, juices esp orange juice and definitely for me - soft drinks or anything carbonated. There is an interesting website about it all here if it helps.

veggiemummy regards the perfume debate, I must confess that I was a bit worried about it when I got pregnant, as I know they have a lot of chemicals that they use in them - synthesised musks and so forth. Thank goodness there is not much made with real musk or civet anymore though, due to animal cruelty awareness (although that doesn't mean the company doesn't test their products on animals of course). Anyway I still do use perfume for work, but I tend to spray them on my clothes rather than directly on my skin. Now, I just need to find a nice non-chemically underarm deodorant that works here in Australia, as the one I used while I was in the UK doesn't "cut the mustard" so to speak in the hot weather here!

Beans33 · 03/09/2008 13:48

Ooh, just went into a shop and I thought the guy in there was saying how huge I was, but it turned out he was saying "you're not at all big for 6 months", but he had a really strong French accent, so I couldn't understand it properly! He was really sweet, though. And he has 23 nephews and thought my bump was boy-shaped. I wonder...

In some ways, I would have loved to have found out at our scan. But I'm also SO excited about meeting the little beast, and finding out what it is!

Beans33 · 03/09/2008 13:54

Wow, Bisou - amazing post! I'm so impressed with your knowledge of stuff! I'm completely clueless, so messages like yours are really valuable. Thank you so much!
Re deodorants - I am SO sweaty at the moment and not just because of hot weather - I'm always quite sweaty, but this is disgusting! I'm like a sponge being wrung out! "Sure" deodorant is quite good, but I still can be a bit, erm, niffy, at the end of the day or night - quite often wake in the night with sweat patches under my boobs on my nightclothes!! Can be quite embarrassing!

Anyone know anything that can help (am also having 2 showers a day to try and combat it!)

katie3677 · 03/09/2008 14:05

Does anyone have any tried and tested methods for stopping snoring? DH and I are going to end up divorcing if I don't sort it out soon!
Think we need a new thread if anyone is brave enough to start another one - our fourth I think!

Indith · 03/09/2008 14:16

Hello!

I'm all married and "mrs" now , had a weekend without ds for the first time ever (he had a ball being fussed over by various relatives) and came back to find the phone line had gone wrong but a nice Mr BT man came and fixed it today Can't survive too long without MN afterall.

Beans there are quite a few threads in health on sweat if you do a search, I had one for dh a while back. I think mitchum came out pretty top of the list as a fantastic one that you can still get in supermarkets rather than the extreme sweat busting once a week type.

erm only sort of scanned the rest...

Waitinggirl I would say with regards to your list of questions that you should go with the flow, try things and see as it will be different for everyone. For pools it depends what your hospital is like and how many they have, if any. You can't usually take your own in. The only way to guarantee one is have a home birth as they can't reserve one, if it is in use when you go in then tough. However, you can move around as much as you want in the water. If you get in and don't like it then you can get out. You can dip in and out when you want to. A tens is pretty cheap to hire so isn't a great loss if you don't use one and a lot of people find them great in early labour. (early labour..what's that then?)

Cheerios are indeed Nestle...Tesco own are Tesco. Can't win! The Aldi version are pretty good.....is Aldi evil (apart from being a supermarket). They also have the lowest sugar content of the lot. Though if you've not looked at the sugar content of cheerios please don't, I don't want to be held responsible to anyone fainting in such a delicate condition!

Also get annoyed at specualtion on the bump/touching etc. I kep getting comments on how low it is. Well yes it is, I carried ds low too, this is clearly how I carry my babies. Piss off.

Wouldn't mind if it moved up a little though, ds favoured being over one side and wasn't too bad but this one just sits right at the bottom all day long and I am peeing like I'm 42 weeks again. I wouldn't mind too much but now I'm not a student anymore I've lost my most convenient loos in town! This one is concerning me a little though, I know there is plenty of time to flip around but all kicks are low and backwards......ho hum.

Was is abby asking about breathlessness? Another victim here, have ahd it a lot this time around. Last night was really bad though, I sounded like a 90 year old having an asthma attack.

Right ho off to check facebook do something useful

bye!

chutneymary · 03/09/2008 14:26

Congratulations Indith! Have you any photos for us to have a look at?

Beans - I'm very sweaty. I update my deodorant during the day, take my jacket off when no one is around to see my bingo wings and sometimes spray a bit of deo on my jacket underarms to mask the pong. Huge sympathies. If you are, er, sweaty elsewhere, use knicker liners (the unscented ones) and popsocks under trousers so you can change them easily too.

zoejeanne · 03/09/2008 14:32

indith congratulations on your marriage, hope you had a fab day? I loved being able to say 'Mrs' and 'my husband' after we got married (Bridget Jones is right, I was pretty smug for while!)

Noticed mentions of Braxton Hicks earlier in the thread (topics have moved pretty fast today!) - I may have felt a first one this morning. When baby is moving around I often feel a hard patch at one side, which I assumed was his bum or something sticking out - but this morning the whole bump went hard temporarily. Could this be BH? It didn't hurt, just felt tight and odd

Oh, and after we all talked about bump measuring the other day, my MW measured me yesterday (24 wk check), although she did say she didn't know why she bothered, as at this stage bumps are all different sizes and by 28 weeks they miraculously all start to measure right. I'm a little concerned cause I was only 17cms - which means I need to grow a whole 11cms in the next 4 weeks!

Purple79 · 03/09/2008 14:33

chutney lol!!! but jotting it down as we speak

I use Mitchum roll on bar, swear by it - its not liquidy so for me it works.

Congrats indith, how lovely - hope it all went as planned

Bisou · 03/09/2008 14:37

Aw thanks Beans that's really sweet of you to say. I love reading your posts too - they are much more informative than I think you give yourself credit for

I meant to say "anti-perspirant" rather than "deodorant" in my post though, as I discovered as a teenager that deodorant can be just a cover up smell rather than a product that actually prevents sweating. Again of course, there is the issue with putting chemicals on your skin (there is research that says it can play a factor in breast cancer, but other research that dismisses those claims) but I've come to the conclusion that there's no point worrying too much about things that are almost unavoidable in my life. After all, where would one stop - there are chemicals in just about everything we use these days, to sunscreen, shampoo & conditioners, toothpaste, and even the plastic containers and tins we store and heat our food in. And then there's all the mobile phone signals, wireless radio and internet signals, microwave oven radiation etc etc! One could easily get overwhelmed by it all by just thinking about it, but it's just a price we pay for living in a modern society.

(runs off to find a tent and go and live in the wilderness)...

Bisou · 03/09/2008 14:46

oooh and congrats MRS Indith !

I used to use Mitcham too in the UK Purple, and found it really good. The only annoying thing though was that the bar thing always seemed to fall out at the end so I could never use it all up 100%. That's my dad's baby boomer "waste nothing" training coming out in me...

Veggiemummy · 03/09/2008 14:55

hey bisou how are things back home in Oz, where are you? i used to use those anti perspirant crystals. over here i used Waleda products that work a treat, and i am a real sweater.

Indith congratulations Mrs, how was your day, can you give us a little overview maybe?

Bisou · 03/09/2008 14:56

and one more thing (sorry, it's like the flood after the drought!), the next thread will actually be the 6th one for us December lassies! I think we get 1001 posts per thread, so I will leave it to one of you more inventive types to create an appropriately named thread while I am fast asleep on the other side of the world. Although I was tempted to create a "Due in Dec 08 but that doesn't mean you can touch my bump!" thread as a joke! hehee

Purple79 · 03/09/2008 14:57

Hi bisou nice to meet you - i know what you mean though im at the end of mine now its cracked, so ready to fall off any time now!

I've got quite a few aunts and uncles that live in Sydney, haven't been there myself but looks amazing, and two of them I found out yesterday are expecting again, our family is growing rapidly

Veggiemummy · 03/09/2008 14:57

oh Katie have tried nasal strips for him? otherwise do you have a spare room or a decent sofa.

Beans33 · 03/09/2008 14:58

Indith - that's brilliant news! Well done! I'm starting to feel a bit unmarried as have had to remove my engagement and wedding rings because I'm swelling up like Violet Beauregarde from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - you know the purple one! Obviously I'm not purple... YET! But congrats, how lovely for you - getting hitched is such a laugh! and of course, the serious business of marriage, ahem. Forgot about that bit! BUT I LOVED BEING THE CENTRE OF ATTENTION FOR A FEW HOURS!!!!

Chutney - I'm a big fan of the old mid-day application of deodorant and we do have showers in the basement at work, which I snuck down to use the other day when it was particularly hot. I showered away with some showergel I'd left there from my days of cycling in. Only to find that I didn't have a towel, having taken it home when I stopped cycling. Mortified! Had a massive panic in the nude flailing around. Luckily no one was there to see either my girth, or my enormous knicker afro! Then just took the plunge and used my vest top I'd been wearing under my wrap around top! And just spent the afternoon being rather low-cut and slutty sultry. And of course was more sweaty after the shower, because of panic sweats!!! Ho hum. At least with pregnancy you get a decent set of norks and a good cleavage!!

Webbi · 03/09/2008 14:59

Hi, I'm new to all of this and dont know any new mums so thought I'd give this a bash! Maybe I should do a little intro...I'm a first time mum at 26 and it's only started to dawn on me that by the end of the year there will be an extra little person in my house :-). I've started to show quite a lot and finished work recently coz the hours were too long but I admire everyone who is still working, I seem to have run out of energy......perhaps chocolate might help wink
Actually is it just me or is the temptation to eat crap overwhelming for everyone!?

Purple79 · 03/09/2008 15:09

Hi webbi I want to eat crap all the time, i blame on bubs most of the time.. hee hee.
Have to force myself to eat right

When are you due?

LadyThompson · 03/09/2008 15:12

Hello Webbi. You might want to add yourself to our list of due dates (anyone know where this is? Don't know how to link). I don't want to eat chocolate...just carby stodge like the evil cheesy mash I have bought to eat tonight.

Congratulations Indith! Tell us more.

Chutney, shall we all send your workplace bad vibes, if they are dicking you around?

Verso, I was wondering where PoisonDwarf had got to too. Hmm.

I'm feeling relieved, as the swishy, superexpensive maternity coat I had my eye on actually looks horrible on, so I don't have to worry about it any more or feel tempted. If I do buy one, I will buy a cheapy one. Which is great because otherwise I'd have felt very, very guilty...

Veggiemummy · 03/09/2008 15:12

i have eaten almost a whole block of chocolate already today so yes getting into a little crap. Welcome Webbi

Beans33 · 03/09/2008 15:12

I'm the same, webbi - but am now (finally) trying to eat the right stuff. Including fruit and veg. YAWN! Am actively trying to cut out chocolate and crisps, but DAMN it's hard!

Webbi · 03/09/2008 15:14

Hi Purple79, I'm due dec 11th how about you? Is this your first? Feel like I got tons to do before then esp a mass amount of baby shopping!

Veggiemummy · 03/09/2008 15:16

how do we make a new thread?

rosmerta · 03/09/2008 15:17

I'll start it, I'll nick Bisou's thread suggestion!
