What's a UTI, Veggie? Sorry, I am clueless. Hope it's nothign serious.

My dork works from home on Fridays, which is blissful. Rest of the guys are generally lovely and I never dread coming to work, it's just my mood today is fairly black, so think it's down to me being huffy rather than anyone else being numpties. I take it back!!!

Think I'll have to have a Thai take away tonight to make myself feel better! I have got the smallest eyes today - literally like raisins!

Veggiemummy · 08/08/2008 11:16

sorry UTI is a urinary tract infection. He is actually quite well in himself but was vomiting his meals yest and complaining of it hurting when he wees luckily i have a wee pot for my pregnancy wee test which i now don't need today so have gotten him to do one in that to save time at the GP. I have to say i am very impressed with my GP surgery we always get same day appointments as long as we ring in the morning.

How come your eyes are like raisins beans are you sleepy, or are you giving everyone evil stares.

Jolly that was a lovely hug thank you, and you also reminded me that i need to buy digestives.

Right i'm off to catch this boy try to get some clothes on him (why do boys love being naked) and get him to the GP.

GettingBiggerBird · 08/08/2008 11:18

Morning ladies. I think I've pinched some of Beans happy pills, feeling much better today. Tired but at least not grupmy for a change!

I had a HB last time and didn't know any of the MWs who turned up. They were lovely though, and it's funny how well you feel you know them by the end of it! My community MWs are lovely and after just one previous baby they all remembered me, very impressive. I think I got to know them more from the visits at home after the birth though, so maybe that's why. I think you're entitled to a HB if you want one - there's lots of useful stuff on the AIMS website about how to make sure you get one if your hospital don't support you. They were happy to support me with pushing for a HB for my twins if I'd decided to go for that (too chicken).

Just had a conference call arranged for 4.30 - on a Friday? How rude.

rosmerta · 08/08/2008 11:27

GBB that is indeed v rude!

veggie I'm glad your dh is so supportive of you, must be a big help. And hope ds is ok.

A friend of mine is a doula and she's agreed that if I want to, she'll be my doula for no charge! I really like the idea but once again dh is unsure. I don't think he realises that I could end up on my own in labour & don't really want to be!

Beans33 · 08/08/2008 11:28

My eyes are like raisins just from not sleeping that well! GBB - I need to have some of my pills back! I'm a right miserable old bat today. Although sure I'll perk up at 4.00 - intending to go home then!

I think anyone who has an HB is very brave - not sure I could do it. Plus what if I got a bit of biggie or blood on our nice carpets? Disaster!

Beans33 · 08/08/2008 11:30

Oh no, rosmerta - I sympathise re doula. i think it's a great idea, but DH is against it as thinks the birth should be between him and me and not a stranger. erm, hello - midwives doctors etc. Oh well.

I'm not too phased. quite relaxed in fact at the moment about birth etc. Seems like ages away... I know it'll come fast though.

My maternity leave starts in just under 3 months - BRING IT ON!

EffiePerine · 08/08/2008 11:35

rosmerta: I'm thinking over teh doula thing as well, need to make a decision. It is quite pricey, so not sure DH would go for it. Also we're not sure where we will be for the birth, so booking is a bit risky!

rosmerta · 08/08/2008 11:40

effie talking to my friend about it she suggested that we ring a couple of doulas from the Doula UK website and get them round for a chat, gives you an idea if you'd like them around your birth or not! Doulas are expensive but I think student doulas charge a flat fee of £150.

SummerLightning · 08/08/2008 11:40

rosmerta that sounds good, why is your DH against it?
veggie it sounds very stressful worrying about whether you would get HB. I don't think I would have a home birth unless I went independent, especially if they were talking about cancelling them on the NHS in your area. sounds like going independent would set your mind at rest and give you better care, even if it is expensive.

rosmerta · 08/08/2008 11:41

I think he thinks he'll be pushed out of the birth if there's a doula & midwives there etc. I've still got time to work on him though

Effie, one more thing, I don't think it matters if you know where you're giving birth or not, you can ring the doula as soon as you go into labour, they'll come to you & then with you wherever you go!

Beans33 · 08/08/2008 11:55

Yup, and student doulas are much cheaper. They don't have as much experience, but are fully trained, so don't break the bank so much. Definitely worth a go!

Beans33 · 08/08/2008 11:56

Rosmerta - my DH is the same - although he is also not sure he's going to be able to come to one of my 2 days of NCT classes, so thinking I might actually really need a doula to help me with breathing etc!

Beans33 · 08/08/2008 12:39

girls, at what stage do you start sleeping with pillows under your bump? I'm trying to get used to sleeping on my side and am finding I wake up with an ache down my side, which I think is the weight of the bump pulling it down towards the bed...

Veggiemummy · 08/08/2008 13:56

on the contrary Doulas are as much there for the DH as the you (well maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration it is you with the baby needing to get out). A friend interviews a Doula who said that i she attended a birth where the MW's & Drs ingnored the father she would make a fuss and make them apologise and introduce themselves to him and insist on him being included. they actually decided against her because she was a bit of a matronly(Nazi) but it seems they are very much into the DH/DP being a part of it all.

well took DS to GP who was very nice they think it may be UTI but don't want to prescribe antibiotics until they get a definate result next tuesday from the urine. I didnt mind when we were in teh surgery because of course while we were there DS was happy running around and chatty showing no signs of illness. Now he has passed out (he hasnt slept during the day since he was 18months and is all pale and vomited while i was looking for birthday cards in Wilkinsons. Typical. Oh well maybe he will feel better after a sleep. It is a bit sad cos it iis his little girlfriend at nurseries birthday party tomorrow, and he really wants to go.

Beans sneak off now.

Veggiemummy · 08/08/2008 14:09

if you need pillows use them, i can't remember when i used pillows last time but this time we have a really comfy matress so might be ok for a bit (our last mattress was getting a bit old when i was preggers last). I bought a body pillow last time which was ok but as our bed was only a double back then didnt leave much room for DH was like having an extra body in the bed. A nice firmish pillow under your belly is helpful.

I am watching the opening ceremony of the olympics in tears again, i am so emotional at the moment, i'm going to be in bits when Australia enters the stadium.

rosmerta · 08/08/2008 14:12

Damn, I forgot the opening ceremony had started! I love seeing all the smaller countries coming in, the ones with about 4 people competing!

veggie your poor ds, hope he's ok for the party!

simmo14 · 08/08/2008 14:13

Hi all
Been dropping in here to read the chat. Sometimes takes me ages to catch up with what is going on.
Have my 20 week scan on Monday. Hope to find out if it is a boy or a girl. Secretly hoping for a girl as have a lovely ds already. Getting worried that I may be disappointed if I find out it is a boy.

Beans: I used a pillow during my last pregnancy and have never got rid of it! Using it to support my mini bump for the last few weeks.
Veggiemummy: hope ds is feeling better. Nothing worse that an ill boy.
Heard some good reports about another hospital near me and not sure whether I should now ask for the baby to be delivered here rather that the initial one I requested. Does anyone know whether it is easy to change your mind? There is nothing wrong with the original choice has DS there but it was very busy.

pixsix · 08/08/2008 14:16

Beans I bought a pregnancy and feeding pillow from John Lewis a couple of weeks ago and have been using it every night.

I've found it really helps to support my bump and to keep me on my side which isn't a natural sleeping position for me. It also stops my legs from aching.

I agree with veggie about the 3 in a bed thing though, you, the husband and the pillow have to snuggle up quite closely to make room in a normal sized bed!

rosmerta · 08/08/2008 14:19

Hmm, I've been waking up with aching hips and sore back, guess its time to get my cushions out as well!

Hi Simmo nice to see you! In theory you should be able to change your mind, in practice however! I would suggest you talk to the midwives at the other hospital & see what they say

theyoungvisiter · 08/08/2008 14:20

oh god I LOVE my sausage/nursing pillow. I even take it with us when we go away for the weekend now as I just can't get comfortable without it.

It was crap for nursing though - just got in the way - although friends who had c-sections did say it was useful for keeping the weight off their scar. Worth buying just for the pre-natal use though, IMO!

zoejeanne · 08/08/2008 14:23

I've heard about wedge pillows to wedge under your bump (appropriately enough!) - anyone one tried those? They sound smaller than the big sausage ones And nursing pillows - do you really need one, or is a normal pillow just fine?

Beans33 · 08/08/2008 14:26

Brilliant, thanks for advice. I've got one of those triangular pillows, which I will put into use tonight. We, too, only have a normal double and it's getting increasingly cosy in there. Shopping for a super kingsize tomorrow and I CANNOT wait! it will take up our whole bedroom!

rosmerta · 08/08/2008 14:28

Last time I had a wedge pillow under the bump and a normal one between my legs, that worked well.

tyv lol at your use of nursing pillow, I found mine very useful to sit on after birth, kept the weight off the stitches!

theyoungvisiter · 08/08/2008 14:31

I've tried both but I prefer the sausage ones because they support YOU better, if you see what I mean.

My problem is that I sleep on my side/front normally, so I need something to prop myself up to stop myself leaning too heavily on my bump/boobs.

I kind of hug the sausage pillow between my legs and arms, and put a thin bit under my bump to support it (it's filled with beans so you can squish it into any shape you want).

Which works for you is probably a question of your shape and which fits with your normal sleeping position if you see what I mean - worth pinching a friend's if you can, to see which feels most comfy to you.

theyoungvisiter · 08/08/2008 14:33

ouch - please don't say the word stitches - I am hoping to get away without any this time. I have all too vivid memories of arranging a ring of pillows in the hospital visitor's chair and shifting from buttock to buttock as I ate my lunch!!
