New thread, people, unless someone else has started one...

Thanks it does make sense. But I am rather a large older lady . I have avoided anything sweet for a few days - that was hard work - but because of my size they are refusing to believe I am perfectly healthy and I dont think they will stop until they find something

theyoungvisiter · 06/08/2008 22:19

well speaking as someone who trying to wriggle out of taking a repeat GTT I sympathise! But on the other hand it's a nice feeling to know that you're healthy and have passed the tests .

TBH though, if they want to refer you for a GTT they will do it, with or without sugar in the urine.

Veggiemummy · 06/08/2008 22:25

mibbes 3 litres well donei can't manage that much i think i get through about 1.5-2ls, and am constantly off to the loo. I have been about 20 times tonight while i've been watching tele, thank goodness for V+

missmama my apt is usually at 9.20am so i collect my first one of the day and pop it into a little bag then have brekky drop DS to nursery and the it's pretty much time for the appointment. I think anytime of the day is fine the main thing they are looking at is protein, i think if they found sugar the would check your blood sugar before they pushed on with any other tests (hopefully)

Verso · 07/08/2008 05:29

missmama I am a larger older lady too (!?) and am a bit that I have been booked in for a GTT later on in the pg because of that (no wee testing required apparently!) and also because DD was 9lb 6oz. The booking midwife refused to believe that I didn't have GD last time round!!! . Anyway - I didn't, and I eat a balanced diet etc - but if the dreaded GTT prevents a possible problem then I'll have it.

EffiePerine · 07/08/2008 06:33

Beans: hope the nasty little man shuts up today. Def complain if it goes on - you shouldn't have to put up with that.

Hatty: I'm feeling the same re 2nd og, I feel guilty when people ask me how far along I am and I say 'um, about 5 months', last night I knew to the week and day! I reckon there are advantages: you don't spend as much time fretting about possible problems, plus it feels more like a natural (and copable) process this time round rather than an alien invasion . I think having some time to yourself is a good plan - going to get myself a maternity cossie and start swimming again, which I find good for clearing my head.

Pixsix: glad things are settling down

No boob squeezing here! But I only stopped feeding DS recently so I expect there's still some milk there.

Re: the GTT, as I've said before mine was much better than I expected. It's also a relief when they tell you there's nothing to worry about!

rosmerta · 07/08/2008 08:06

beans hope you have a better day, agree with others that you should complain if he carries on

daisy sorry about the psd, I think I'm getting it this time around as well though mildly. I read that things like when you get up to roll onto one side, keeping your legs together and then sit up and swing off helps, also sitting down to put underwear & trousers on. But I'm sure the physio will go through this anyway!

veggie I remembered that ages ago you asked about my essay & I didn't reply , still writing it atm, quite hard as its meant to be reflective so I'm having to revisit all the emotions I had when trying to bf ds and pinpoint why I think it didn't work. But I also need to be calm when writing about how it might affect my teaching etc in line with the NCT policies!

zoejeanne · 07/08/2008 08:59

Morning all, hope everyone is well today?

daisy fingers crossed you don't have SPD - a friend of mine suffered this year and was in a lot of pain, so you have my sympathy. Take your doctors/physio's advice, but what worked for her was taking time off work - bed rest and then gentle and regular walks to keep moving. She spent her whole pregnancy looking in pain, until she started her maternity leave and then she looked healthier than I've seen her in years. So really do look after yourself and listen to your body. Fingers crossed for you

Well baby zj started kicking last night, for the last few weeks he's been wriggling, but it was definite kicks (or punches) last night - might be time to try the DVD test again!

Have a good day everyone

daisydora · 07/08/2008 09:04

Morning all

Feeling a lot better today. SPD still painful but not as bad as past few days. Fortunately I'm in all day supervising the carpet fitter so a good excuse to rest up . Think its been worse as we are in the process of re-decorating and its so hard just to sit back and let DH do everything! He's been working lots of OT too, so the house is upside down and DD wants "a mummy love" every 2 minutes. Very cute, but its hard to pick her up at times.

I put my Maternity leave request in yesterday. Due to finish on the 28th October so I'll be 36 weeks. Hope I can make it till then it seems so long off

Veggiemummy · 07/08/2008 09:16

Rosemerta i was wondering how you were doing with it as it sounded like it would be quite a difficult thing to do.

not that it is anywhere near the same butI recently had to write a reflective journal on my BF experience so i can do the first module of the BF counsellor course. My experience was fine exc. when DS was 5 weeks old i had a breast abscess that the GP's spent 2.5 weeks just throwing antibiotics at until finally it practically jumped out ready to bite them and still then they wanted to wait to see what happened so i gave up and went private to have it lanced (i still have a scare from the skin that was so badly stretch from the bulb that was the abscess) it all ended well but the GP's and consultants were urging me to stop breastfeeding and i was so upset and devastated so writing about the experience even though it ended well was quite upsetting. I can't even imagine how hard it must be for you.

Veggiemummy · 07/08/2008 09:24

Daisy if you do have to finish early because of the pain, sick leave taken for maternity reasons is not considered normal sick leave so is not counted out of your normal sick day entitlement. So if the pain gets a lot worse towards the end you may be able to get you GP or physio to sign you off a bit earlier or even see if you could do limited duties while at work or even work from home.

EffiePerine · 07/08/2008 09:29

Daisy: no experience with SPD but sounds horrible . Hope the physio offers some helpful suggestions. I think there are a lot of current and past sufferers on MN, so maybe try a sep thread in Pregnancy?

I've been have some hip pain but I htink it's from lying awkwardly in bed - time to roll out the extra pillows

Rosmerta: essay sounds tough but well done for doing the training - we need far more BFCs (I think that is what you are doing? Correct me if I'm wrong).

Pg brain moment of the day: leaving the loos at work with my skirt tucked into my knicjkers . Luckily spotted and rectified before I'd gone too far!

daisydora · 07/08/2008 09:30

Thanks for that Veggie, I had wondered if I could do that...I do not have a sympathetic manager at allthough. She is so 'company' driven its mad. I think she thinks we are robots not people!

I did refuse to do something yesterday as I had to bend to look for something on th ebottom of a filing cabinet and it hurt...she wasn't best pleased but I said that if she insisted I did it then I would have to contact Health & Safety for a full risk assessment of my job. Fortunately as my mum is one of my mw's she is quite open to telling work what I have so that they have to accomodate me iyswim . Manager got someone else to do it, but I did wonder if she thought about what I said as she seemed much nicer to me later in the day!

daisydora · 07/08/2008 09:32

Effie - I too have pg brain. Jumped a redlight the other day on way to work and was shaking my fist at the other driver. he looked at me like I was mental, then I realised only me had gone through lights .....drove away in shame.

EffiePerine · 07/08/2008 09:33

Daisy: have you had a H&S assessment already? Becasue they nned to do one if you are pregnant. The SPD might be a v good reason to get them moving.

some info here

www.personneltoday.com/articles/2008/03/07/44781/pregnancy-and-risk-assessment-legal-q.html

Thanks for the reminder: I need to chase mine up as well

zoejeanne · 07/08/2008 09:35

daisy once you inform your employer that you're pregnant they should do a risk assessment for you, so actually h&s should have one there, if they're doing it right. And sympathies about the manager - I had one of those in my last job, and it's no fun.

LOL at the driving!

ZJ.x

daisydora · 07/08/2008 09:51

I don't know anyone in my company that has had a risk assessment when pregnant . Not back in till Monday but I'm going to sort one out asap

Veggiemummy · 07/08/2008 09:56

OMG i really should make sure i have an empty bladder before reading these posts daisy your red light story nearly made me do a little wee. Seriously be careful though.

Your manager sounds like she might need some baby making practice herself IYKWIM. Good on you for standing your ground on that point. I had an excellent manager and staff when i was preggars at work they would run around doing anything slightly strenuous. One of my staff wouldn't allow me to assist with holding kids for blood tests in case one kicked me or was too heavy. Apart from feeling like an invalid it was quite nice. Although it meant having no excuse to go to meetings (but they did make sure there was lots of sandwiches set aside just for me at the long meetings)

RhinestoneCowgirl · 07/08/2008 10:05

daisydora - for someone working in an office the risk assessment would be v simple, things like not changing the photocopier toner, lifting heavy stuff etc. Companies should legally do this as a matter of course and make reasonable adjustments, as well as giving you time off for AN appts and parenting/relaxation classes (although they can ask to see appt cards/letter from MW)

Naturally the charity I work for hasn't done any of this but then I only work 2 days a week from home, so pretty much responsible for my own safety anyway...

rosmerta · 07/08/2008 10:08

daisy I had a risk assessment when I was working, best thing that came out of it was a memory foam back cushion which I was allowed to bring home when I went on maternity leave!

veggie it is hard but sure I'll get it done eventually! Are you still doing the BFC training?

effie I'm training to be an antenatal teacher but obv feeding a big part of those classes so has to be covered

EffiePerine · 07/08/2008 10:34

aha . good luck - when are you due to finish?

Beans33 · 07/08/2008 10:41

I'm off to the MW this afternoon - what happens in those appointments? It's at 2.20 - I'm not coming back to the office. JOY OF JOYS!

If only I didn't have to come back tomorrow!

It's really weird, but I still feel a bit of a fraud re being pregnant - like somehow mine isn't as real as other pregnant people I see! Or as important. I actually nearly tried to give up my seat for a pregnant woman on the bus today, as no one else was, then remembered that I am too and just as valid. So stared at man sitting next to me and pointedly at the woman standing until he gave his up. Makes me so cross when people don't. It's only happened once for me so far and it's so rude!

Veggiemummy · 07/08/2008 11:08

Rosemerta I start the BFN BF helpers course in October i think it is over 12 weeks but luckily it is very drawn out so it doesnt actually end til feb or march i think and they have a 4 week break from classes about when veggiebaby is due. Unfortunately the classes are in Wolverhampton which i think is about an hour or more from me but they have a creche for DS and veggiebaby will be allowed in the class with me when he comes along. The instructor is happy for me to make up any classes i miss because of the pregnancy or birth by having private classes with her. I think from there i can do a few more modules to get up to BFC stage which would be good eventually as i can transfer it to Australia when i go back home.

I noticed the other day that the NCT has a BF course is it for the antenatal class they do on BFing? Apart from the assignment how are you finding your course for antenatal instructor?

Beans last preg was all done privately through a MW led birth center so my antenatal visits then were mainly a chat & coffee at my house with a BP and tummy exam thrown in. So far in the NHS ones it's a quite BP(which they cannot seem to do to save themselves) and my wee checked and a tummy exam. I do like my midwife and we have a little chat but it is all very quick. They need to do them quite often to be sure of picking up any problems the majority of mums don't have anything come up but it's not worth missing the ones that do thats why they do them so often and increase as you et closer to the birth.

Beans33 · 07/08/2008 11:28

Cool - thanks Veggie.

I also wanted to speak to them about my birth plan as I have NO idea what I want to do... Wouldn't mind a waterbirth, but know nothing about it.

Today is going so fast!

zoejeanne · 07/08/2008 11:33

beans I know what you mean about feeling a fraud. Because I've been lucky and not had sickness or other problems I do just feel normal and can't understand why people what to help me carry stuff and so on. I find that Mum's are the most helpful and caring, but others don't seem to notice or think about it. Luckily not encountered any rude people yet, but then I drive to work (no public transport in my little village)

Good luck at the mw this afternoon - maybe you'll get to hear the heartbeat again - I can't wait for my next appointment to hear that!

ZJ.x

rosmerta · 07/08/2008 12:02

effie I've got at least another 2yrs to go yet!

veggie I'm really enjoying it, I have a good tutor and group and I am just so much more aware of what lots of pregnant women have to go through for a 'normal' birth! The NCT do have a BFC course but that's separate from the one I'm doing. Many NCT ant teachers use a bfc for the feeding class as they're better informed.

beans hope the mw appt goes well!
