awww ..thats a lovely "thank you for finding my purse" gesture Debi..

kiskidee · 04/08/2008 16:19

if i go on facebook to have a look, is it easy to find? I avoid facebook and often consider deleting my acct.

if you've accepted her as a friend you should be able to find them easily enough as they'll come up on your home page (not your profile page but if you click home at the top of your profile you'll see what all your friends have been up to- sorry if you knew all that but thought might as well explain as you obviously don't use it much)

I only have to get some nighties/vesty top type things for hosp bag I think and then I really should pack it as I am now less than a month away from due date.

kiskidee · 04/08/2008 17:11

no I don't Deb.

the thing is, I wanted to see Jenpot's baby but hate the idea that there is an ever growing web of people that facebook brings up, the more things you join.

Congrats Jenbot! Glad Clara is healthy enough to be moved closer to home, bet you're looking forward to having her properly at home with you. Looking forward to hearing about birth (OMG at 32 weeeks - I am 35 weeks and in no way feel remotely ready...)

At my parents, so keeping up by skim reading posts, apologies if I miss anything!

Off to get a haircut tomorrow so I look and feel vaguely human post birth, and perhaps buy some baby stuff...

mustsleep · 04/08/2008 19:01

on the subject of travel cots - there is soo much choice, I found them invaluable, we ended up with a pop up one for babies, a tent type one for travelling overseas and the big heavy standard type.

advantages of big heavy standard type is they are quick to put up and last until 2-2.5
disadvantage is in my description of it!!

advantages of tent one - it is very light and is mosquito proof and lasts until 3 plus but takes 15-20 mins to put up;

pop up baby one does not have a very good mattress but is so tiny and light you can stick it in your changing bag,

a moses basket is more sturdy but heavier again limited life span,

if you have a pram you don't need anything else for baby to sleep in up until 4-6 months as long as it is portable enough

you can just stick baby on the middle of a big double bed when visiting but be warned the ability to roll can happen sooner than you expect so this is a bit limited in how long you can do it for!

If I had to choose just one I would go for the tent one because it is so versatile (brand name nomad) but I have kept all of mine because I use different ones for different circs!

Hello all.

Sorry I havent posted much the last 3 days but was admitted to hospital overnight on friday with suspected premature labour (except it wasnt!) and have been to north yourkshire for a couple of days to recuperate!

Congratulations Jenbot! Lovely news

This thread moves so fast!!

Hope all are well and welcome to the newbies

kel78 · 04/08/2008 20:13

Must sleep- My dyson too packed in but didnt really want to buy a new one at moment, if u ring dyson hotline and pay about £50 they replace everything that needs to be replaced and give you a year warranty on all the parts they replaced. I had to have a new motor and the man replaced all filters and pipes for the one off cost and its like a new hoover again.

Im sure I will get a few more years out of it now.

Congrats jenbot- clara is beautiful, wow the announcments will be coming all the time now the closer we are getting

carrieon · 04/08/2008 20:22

Hope you're feeling better and getting some rest becaroo!

Dh is halfway through building his new BBQ and has left it in pieces across the downstairs of our house while he goes to football. It had better be done before dd gets up tomorrow morning!!

mustsleep · 04/08/2008 20:28

kel78 arrrghh have already ordered a new one, although we had the cylinder typewhich has been wrecing my back so wanted the upright anyway but i will remember that in the future

we had the nomad travel cot for dd as we went to bulgaria when she was 18 months and the hotel could not guarantee a cot would be available it was great really light weight as the travel cot would have to have counted on our luggage allowance as they do;t have their own allowance until they are over two

MelT76 · 04/08/2008 20:29

Congrats Jenbot. Seen the photos on Facebook and Clara looks lovely. Hope she's home soon.

notcitrus · 04/08/2008 20:31

Anyone know anything about codeine? Apparently it's not supposed to be good in 'late pregnancy' as it can make the fetus too stoned to breathe once born, but how late is that?

I've been prescribed 60mg up to 4x daily (with 500mg paracetamol, which is apparently fine even in labour), which is the max dose ever prescribed pretty much, so I'm trying to cut down.

(don't worry, will call pharmacist and GP in the morning, but knew there were people with SPD here who might know)

Ignorant question 2 - how bad is it for a baby, say 4 months up, to roll off something like a mattress onto the floor? I feel very ignorant of things that are considered bad now but weren't when I was a kid - back then a baby too large for a carrycot would just be put on a mattress on the floor, or even just on a normal bed. No-one thought anything of kids falling out of bed regularly, but thinking about it a proper bed is pretty high compared to a small toddler...

I know with newborns you need to support their head, and water should only be elbow-hot, new cot mattress, lie on back and feet to foot of cot, no smoking around them. Keep chokable and stranglable things away. And when they cry try cuddling, feeding, nappy changing, winding, bouncing etc until something works...

Anything else obvious to avoid doing with my baby, apart from not dropping it...?

Sorry, I'm worrying again. Time for another nap, I think!

DebitheScot · 04/08/2008 20:46

notcitrus trust me, you'll know what do as soon the baby comes. Most of it really does come naturally and the rest of it you can ask about on mn and someone will know the answer!

carrieon · 04/08/2008 21:12

notcitrus I would have thought little harm would come to a baby that fell from a mattress that is at ground level, but its not exactly ideal (!) and I would question why a baby that could roll would be on a mattress anyway (although I fully appreciate your point about how times have changed - its not like our parents had travel cots and sometimes they just had to make do!). Depends what it rolls onto, which body part it lands on, whether its face is wedged somewhere etc (danger of suffocation if mattress is against a wall, danger of head injury even from a carpeted floor). I remember someone saying to us never to leave the baby on the change table (ours is a cot-top changer) because babies always learn to roll for the first time when you're not looking. That always stuck with me, and if I was tempted to leave dd there while I went to the bathroom to wash my hands, I would remember those words and think 'this might be the moment you learn to roll' and reach for a babywipe instead! I know of people who've put their non-rolling baby in the middle of a bed and come back to find them on the floor and they don't know how it happened. But no long term damage was done, just a panicked mother and a very upset child, and a quick trip to A&E to check there was no head injury.

In your list of things to do with crying baby you forgot 'when all else fails, put it in bed and ignore while you make a cuppa'.

eandz · 04/08/2008 21:56

what i would do for a cup of joe right now!

blimey · 04/08/2008 22:02

notcitrus bnf says about codeine:-
Depress neonatal respiration; withdrawal effects in neonates of dependent mothers; gastric stasis and risk of inhalation pneumonia in mother during labour, but only says 3rd trimester - no more detail than that.
I have spd but not on any meds so sorry can't help more than that

Talia1 · 04/08/2008 22:04

mustsleep · 05/08/2008 09:33

i know now that the weather has cooled off am sleeping much better and just waking three times a night for a wee but it's so much easier to drop back off again

not sure but i think i may be seeping some sort of fluid it's defo not wee - but not sure if it;s just discharge or not

midwife is supposed to be doing my home visit this week and is suppsed to making an apt with me buti have yet to speak to her

phoned docs yesterday to make sure she had my correct phone no and the recpetionist was sooo rude to me all bug sighs and yes i suppose i can pass that on (bitch) but she did say that the midwife wasn;t back till today so i prob won;t get an appt this week

ooh she has actually just called me not my actual midwife though but any old one will do anyway i sem to see someone different every time she is going to call me back today at some point as the receptionist did not pass my message on just asked her to ring me which sounds like it;s worked out better as otherwise she may have missed the note in the diary!!
