Scraggy,
Glad to hear you are having fun in college! Is always nice to learn something new, and break the routine of work, isn't?
What are you studying by the way? Sorry if you've mentioned before and I missed!

charleypops · 03/02/2005 13:23

Oh Tessie, what a horrible decision to have to make I hope it goes smoothly. MrsW is so right. I'm sure it'll be lovely for your boys to make more local friends and be an opportunity for you get more involved with the village if you want and they will probably still keep in touch with their old ones too

Trib - have fun in Amsterdam (I'm not sure I'd know how to have fun there though what with not drinking etc )

Have a fun time on your break too MrsW

Hmm - I'm intrigued now by washable nappies (especially hemp ones). Never really thought about it. How many do you need do you think?

Hope your cold doesn't develop Lua!

I'm thinking of doing a little course in something before baby's here - don't know what though...

Scraggyaggy · 03/02/2005 13:28

Lua - Am studying to be a Chartered Tax Adviser at FTC. I'm in London today as they don't do the Booster days anywhere else, and then I'll bestudying in Bristol as they don't do the tax courses in Cardiff. But despite all that, I really want to get qualified now and I'm hoping that I'll be able to concentrate my efforts whilst on maternity leave!

Lua · 03/02/2005 13:29

Charley, I think I bought something like 20 of them. It's good to have enough for 2 or 3 days, so you don't have to wash that often, or do them in a half empty washer.... The nappy lady site that mcmudda suggests have all the basics for starters. I've also found the nappies and potty training section in MN quite useful!

Can you tell I am really trying to avoid doing work?

Uwila · 03/02/2005 13:31

Charley, I forgot to mention the other day when we were talking about Gina Ford. I don#t mind if you want to borrow mine, but I need it back before baby arrives. I could drop it by one day after work and you could return it on 02 April (at the london meet).

Alternatively, you can pick it up in Waterstone or on Amazon.co.uk.

PinkArjuna · 03/02/2005 13:36

Don't worry Tessie it all seems really bad at the minute but in the future it won't be. I have been speaking to people alot lately about changing schools. You never end up with the same friends anyway even though at the time it feels like a disruption. I'll be yanking my little boy out of his primary school at 7 to go to the Grammer school most likely. The costs are crippling I have realised everything that I have in a trust from my father will be pissed down the drain in school fees.

Besides if you have good schools in your area it isn't a bad thing. I would prefer to go the Secondary selective/grammer school route however in the area I am in you have to pay for the grammer school and the only selective school is right out of the area I am in and far to church centred. All state schools should offer the same standard of secondary education. Perhaps I should move to Tumbridge Wells - I bet there state schools aren't too bad - though probably an assumption

I think it depends on the child anyhow - perhaps your little one will adapt well and be happier? You have to consider that too. It might be for the best. I went to 5 schools in total over my school Career and moving was the best thing I ever did. I have some of the most tenacious friendships from my last school and don't regret the disruption at all. You may have done the best thing ever. Besides - private schools have those mothers like in desperate housewives last night where the whole PTA is in Crisis over the social climbing bullshit

Scraggy - Oh I am going to get a cot bed afterwards. However the moses basket and travel cot will tide me over the first little bit. The travel cot arrived today - bought in a cheap sale and it doesn't look substantial for constant use. It is a Hauck one too with a matress but it looks more like a playpen - plus it is embossed with Pooh bear and mobile. Cute though if you like that sort of thing - wasted on me.

I found out one of my friends (a student) spent all her money buying a total matching nursery kit out furnishings and decoration and her little boy doesn't even sleep in the nursery. I am glad I'm not the broody type or my pockets would be emptier than even I dare to comprehend. As long as my wooden things are birch I don't give a damn about the rest. The only thing I am interested in is my baby in a bandana with curly hair poking out the edges (MMmm I bet hes glad I'm his mummy )

PinkArjuna · 03/02/2005 13:43

Oh I forgot - I am off out now to meet a bristol mumsnet mum at Cribbs Causeway - have a good day

Scraggyaggy · 03/02/2005 13:46

Tessie - Just wanted to say that I moved schools all my life til I was about 13 and when I look back on that time, I'm amazed how well I coped and how much I enjoyed it! Don't turn it into a negative, make it all sound really positive for your boys and that it's a new adventure and it's time to do this etc and they'll take really well to it.

Pink - I'm afraid I have all matching nursery stuff but I am a cheap-skate (or rather DP is!!) so mine came from Ikea and Ebay!

PinkArjuna · 03/02/2005 13:54

Yeah she got the Whole bloody mothercare top of the range set - £50 quid for a bastard moses basket!! (excuse my irrate temper) what a waste of student loan! She is an under grad too and god I don't know. I just can't justify maxing out cards for stuff you can't really afford. Ebay has much better sets for cheaper scraggy - I'll get a couple of things from there but honestly - some people. I mean fine if she was earning mega bucks or something but spending your student loan - they had nothing to live on at the end of the year because of it. All because they bought useless booties and loads of other rubbish they have never used. That saying I am borrowing the stuff so I can't complain they do regret it now though needless to say...

LipstickMum · 03/02/2005 14:18

Wow, you really can't afford to slack off on this thread!!

Did I start that husband/partner rant about what they do and don't do at home because of my cufflink/ drier saga?? Hehe. My dp is domesticated, just a bit absent-minded, hence the cufflinks in his trouser pocket. He is a brilliant cook and will make anything, not to mention delicious sushi!! He's great at all that DIY stuff too and washing dd's nappies etc.

How are you feeling after the crash Jpnah? I bet that shook you up, even though you are fine.

Welcome back Jezebel, so glad your pregnancy has progressed well after the initial concerns - keep posting!

Welshie, hope your check up was ok. Was it a midwife appt. or an extra check??

We have a couple of scans coming up tomorrow don't we?? Charley, Megi... anyone else? I was meant to have mine, but it's next Wed now.

Sorry you're feeling bad about the decision you've made about your boys schooling Tessie, never an easy decision. Lots of happy, successful women on here who moved school a few times. If they're now attending school in your village, that has many pluses too. I'm dreading making all those kinds of decisions for my children, I worry for them so and nothing's happened yet!!!

It's funny how some people have to have matching nursery furniture and some couldn't care less! We went more for a style and colour theme in dd's room; sea greens and blue. A sort of sea theme going on, with dolphins and whales on curtains and stencilled on furniture, our old friends from sailing days in New Zealand #heavy sigh# ...

Hi Uwila - thanks for the offer, but I don't trust me with other people's books, I think what I'll do is take some time out from my hectic schedule over the weekend to browse round some bookshops. As you know, I have my scan tomorrow, so that might give us a bit of a kick to actually buy something for the baby too! Still haven't got any maternity clobber for myself either, and need a pair of jeans and some cargo thingies so I'll have another go at that too.

HI Lippy - did you have a nice day yesterday?

Charley, best of luck with the scan tomorrow. Dont know if this is any use, but I'm sure you mentioned you were quite small height wise (really sorry if this is incorrect). I've just got a great pair of jeans and cargo pants, the former from Next catalogue, the latter from the shop. I'd definitely give Next a whirl if you haven't done already.

Thanks all of you for your concern about the car bump. My back is tingling a bit, but that could be due to pgy, pc work etc. Its so hard to tell. Like some of you say, even if you're not hurt, it does shake you up a bit, esp when you are already worried about bump. I've turned into Mrs Over-Protective of Belly.....ha ha.

Tessie, really dont feel guilty. Kids are SO adaptable. And it will be lovely to make friends with the local kids, who they can potentially play with after school and stuff. I wouldn't worry about education stds so much either. Its so dependent on the individual school. I sat "A" levels in both the private and the state sector. I can genuinely say that the standard of teaching in the state sector was so much higher than the private one - I'm so glad I made the move.

megi · 03/02/2005 18:30

Hello everyone!
I've not posted for a few days cos I've had a stinking cold. Managed to go into work, but when I've got in, all I've done is eat and go to bed! Anyway, feeling much better now!

My scan got moved to today! (With 2 days notice - nice). I couldn't believe the detail - I could see everything - even the eyes - which I don't think are open yet! We didn't ask to find out the sex but I am pretty sure it is a girl - lke Lippy - we just seem to be a "girl family". I really don't mind either way - I honestly don't have a preference!

Charley - a question about the Jane - I went to Daisy and Toms at Bluewater last week, and I agree I think you do get more for your money with this than the Bugaboo. - I am not sure whether the one I saw did lie completely flat - ie 180 degrees. It still had a little bend in it which would make me cautious about using it as a carrycot. We have family all over the country, and spend lots of weekends away so a carrycot is pretty essential. Have you seen it lay flat? I must admit I didn't ask for a demo so I honestly don't know for sure.

Scraggyaggy · 03/02/2005 18:50

I have my scan tomorrow morning too! Will find out if I'm going to have a dream birth with a baby with a little head or not!!! x

Scraggyaggy · 03/02/2005 18:58

Tea - Why don't you try the Wanted thread here on MN. I got some lovely things second hand from other MNers as I have some "functions" to attend too. The other place to try is ebay, but look for maternity dresses from America, in paricular Gap Maternity. You can get a dress, including postage for about £15, and it should arrive in 5-7 days. I've got two stunning numbers this way.

LipstickMum · 03/02/2005 19:11

Megi, why don't you come to the meet in April??? Go on, you know you want too!!

Quick question re ebay. DO you guys who use it and buy stuff from the States go to ebay.com or .co.uk? I'm thinking mainly of Gap maternity wear, they dont have much on the UK site...

By the way Megi, I have the Jane too with swivel front wheel. The car seat/carrycot, does lie flat and it's invaluable at that young age, see Charley for all the info on lie-flat car seats being so important during early weeks. We traveeled with dd at 3.5 weeks to Germany and took it with us so she could sleep in it at night too.

I doubt I have any places to buy 'posh do' clothes Tea that you don't already know about. Like Scraggy says, try here, maybe put up a 'Wanted' post..?

LipstickMum · 03/02/2005 19:14

Oooh Teabelly!! There are 2 nice Gap dresses on ebay right now, only about £15

megi · 03/02/2005 19:22

Oh go on then! I didn't put my name down at first cos dh plays footie on a Sat, and would quite hard to get someone to have dd for the day. BUT - he got sent off a couple of weeks ago for swearing at the ref ! and has been banned!!!!!!! His loss - my gain! Will sign up in a sec!

Thanks for the info on the pram Lippy. We booked a holiday to Spain in August before we found out I was up the duff - as already explained - this baby was not exactly planned . We were really not sure whether to go ahead or not - but we booked with friends and didn't want to let them down! We need to make sure we have the right equipment as I am really scared about going to Spain in August with a tiny baby! Sounds like I might be a Jane owner pretty soon too!

charleypops · 03/02/2005 19:22

Hi Megi,

Congratulations on your scan - I hope I get to see detail too

I think you probably saw the Jane with the pushchair attached to the chassis which almost reclines rather than the carrycot attachment which is the "Matrix" car seat (scroll down for more pics) which does lie completely flat. There's also a "Rebel" car seat which is a more typical one with a bend which can be attached to the chassis too. Are you thinking of getting one?

Scraggy, good luck with your scan tomorrow x

Is it just me and Lippy after yours then? (mine's at 3)

I'd better not get too close to a lot of you with your colds!

LipstickMum · 03/02/2005 19:29

Well done Megi, it will be great to meet you this time round. Glad Charley has filled you in on all the Jane details, she's the Designer Travel System Queen Jane is Spanish, so you'll be right at home on holiday in August!!

Yeah, I think after this week, I'm the only one left What about Tessie? I think she's due about the same time as me..

OH MY GOD!!!!! Just had the biggest muscle twinge/kick EVER! Made me shout out loud!!! lol

Enjoy your scan tomorrow Scrags!!!

welshmum · 03/02/2005 19:32

Evening all, no time to catch up properly now but wanted to say hello and all the best to those with scans tomorrow. Welcome on board to those who have lurked.
Had a good session with midwife - everything as it should be,apparently I have the blood pressure of a 'petite asian woman' - was I fit? the m/w asked. After I'd stopped chortling I said no. I've also got - and this is even harder to believe - 'strong stomach muscles', all this plus a good strong baby heart beat and a new hairdo - I am definitely in a good mood
Chat more tomorrow - have good evenings all xxx

Lua · 03/02/2005 20:06

Welshie - Glad to hear everything look good on the visit with the midwife! Very [envy} of stong muscles and new hairdo!

Megi - Congrats on the lovely scan!

Charley, Scraggy, and anyone else? - Good luck tomorrow with your scans!

Lippy - you will find more option if you go to ebay.com if gap dresses is what you want. The difference in price is big enough that compensates for the posting costs.

Ok, I should get out of here before you all get my germs! I definately have a cold!

JonahB · 03/02/2005 21:08

Evening All,

I've got a question for everyone. I'm feeling disgustingly unfit and want to do some sort of gentle excercise that wont make me hurt all over. Has anyone found a good pgy excercise video/DVD that they would recommend? I was thinking of yoga, but anything would be good. Any ideas?
