Lippy - the times I've tried to buy high street jeans! It just doesn't work for me. Also, where the hell do you buy maternity jeans that are under a size 10 or a "real" size 8?? the "8s" I tried on in Formes absolutely drowned me. Boys jeans are a slightly better cut - but they're hard to find in my size, and obviously you can't get boy's maternity jeans Even when not pg, I could never find any - they're all too big/too baggy round the hips or thighs/too mumsie/too high waisted/too artificially washed etc ..... I've become so phobic of going to buy jeans, the last pair I bought was over a year ago (and I didn't particularly like them), the time before that was nearly 3 years before .

So good luck on your quest. Personally, I think you'd look nice in the trousers I bought at Formes. In fact I'd recommend them to anyone who's preggers.

tribpot · 07/02/2005 19:04

I've been around this afternoon but sort of with one eye shut (metaphorically) as I try to read your birth stories very quickly so the details don't sink in .

katzguk · 07/02/2005 19:05

i don't have a birth plan not really and didn't with DD. i had discussed what i wanted with DH and my midwife before hand an di'm happy to just go with the flow. but like i said giving birth is a personal thing NOT a spectators sport so no students, minimal number of people present thats my plan

charleypops · 07/02/2005 19:06

Uwila, Lua, could you tell me what the American equivalent of a british shoe size 1.5 and a size 2 is please? Both in ladies (I think it's a 3.5 and a 4?) and in kids (no idea)

thanks x

Oh and no, I haven't even thought about a birth plan yet except my cousin has told me I should put down I want the Vitamin K injection straight away (well, I don't want it, I want the baby to have it) - another cousin of ours had a little girl who had a brain haemorrhage shortly after birth and the condition is genetic, albeit extremely rare. Oh, and she told me having the baby put to your breast straight after birth helps establish breastfeeding? I thought this was normal, perhaps it is time for me to venture into the birth chapters of my Miriam Stoppard book, I have been avoiding them til now. Actually, I think I'll wait til I've got over the scan tomorrow before tackling all that.

Uwila · 07/02/2005 19:17

Charley, according to my conversion chart UK 1.5 and 2.0 convert to 4.0 and 4.5, respectively.

If you want more, you can have a look at www.shoes-us.com/sizes.htm

Uwila · 07/02/2005 19:18

Re the vitamin K, before I had DD I loaded up on strawberries (which are obviously high in vitamin k). I had reason to do this I just sort thought if it was a good thing, I'd start by getting it into my system.

katzguk · 07/02/2005 19:23

DD had the jab straight at birth and was suckling on my breast within 20 mns of being born, whilst i was being stitched!!

Uwila · 07/02/2005 19:23

you'd think I could type properly after all of today's practice. That should have said I had no reason to load up on vitamin k.

JonahB · 07/02/2005 19:31

Lua, that's what I was thinking of, toxoplasmosis. Also cat flu. "They" reckon that most people who have cats are human carriers already, so i'm working on the assumption that the baby will probably get all the immunity they need from me. I have this romantic idea that it would be so nice to have a cat round a toddler as they will have to learn about patience (if they want a cat cuddle) and respecting animals/wildlife, which is really important to me. Or am I kidding myself and in reality the animal spends the next 10 years hid under the sofa .

Charley, I am so with you on pgy trousers. They all lie about their size and swamp me. When I'm not pgt, I buy a lot of my jeans from topshop petite. As they are designed for 14 year olds, the size 10 fits me really well (i'm usually size 8 trousers). Dont know if you've ever given them a whirl.

Uwila, you certainly haven't offended me with your c/cection opinions. I'm just glad that its not always me on the soapbox (I do have a prepensity, but I try and curb it). As a first timer, I'm trying not to think about it at all. Probably naive of me, but i know it hurts, I know i'll hate every s*dding second of it, but hopefully, by whatever means, i'll have a lovely baby at the end of it. I've got mates who are glued to Discovery Health through their pgys, but i dont want to see some naked scouser (apologies to anyone from L'pool) or some Portland wife heaving a baby out. How will seeing someone's horror story benefit me?

LipstickMum · 07/02/2005 19:51

Yeah, I'm not short, but even at 5'7", I always find designer jeans especially, tooooooo long. So, god knows how you petite ones cope!

bubbaloo · 07/02/2005 19:52

evening all,
cant believe how long its taken for me to read all todays messages-its a good job im not online til the evening-lol!!
charley, yes i am anaemic.ive got pernicious anaemia and have to have vitamin b12 jabs every 3 months which can be a real pain-but im used to them now
by the way...you can buy linseed/flaxseed oil but it is fairly expensive.
jonah,we've also got cats and we're really worried about how jealous they'll be when the baby arrives-i just hope they dont run away as they really are spoilt at the mo
im also absolutely petrified about the birth-i probably have a really low pain threshold and i hate needles with a passion so although epidurals sound like heaven once they're in,its the getting them in iykwim!!!
i think the thing which is really bothering me more so is whether i'll have stitches-to me thats more frightening than the birth and i suppose that now its in there its got to come out either way so theres no point in getting into a state about it-easier said than done though
tribpot, good luck for your scan tomorrow-we've got ours in the morning and im really nervous but really excited also
wont be on-line til late tomorrow evening but all being well i should be able to add a boy/girl to our list of june babies

charleypops · 07/02/2005 20:08

Thank Uwila - great link!

Jonah, I've not been in topshop for about 3 years - I got so fed, I did buy some petite Moto jeans from there once but the cut was all wrong for me, and incredibly, they were a bit short I guess stock's changed considerable since then though, so I should pop in next time I'm on Oxford Street and try again.

Bubbaloo - Oo Pernicious anaemia - reminds me of Charley and the Chocolate Factory for some reason (Pernicious Schnids??). Hope it's not too much of a pain

I'm scared of childbirth too, and probably have a low pain threshold - that's why I don't want an epidural - I'm scared I'd push too much/at the wrong time/in the wrong position and have a prolapse or something and have years of pain afterwards. Also, I believe being upright/squatting/on all fours has got to be a better position for delivery - which of course you can't achieve after an epi.

Good luck with your scan tomorrow!!

charleypops · 07/02/2005 20:09

I meant scans for Trib and Bubbaloo

OP posts:
LipstickMum · 07/02/2005 20:14

Charley, I was adamant I didn't want an epi either, but at the time, I decided to get off my principled high horse and have one!! Labour just wasn't going as planned

charleypops · 07/02/2005 20:21

Yeah, I know it can all go horribly wrong, and probably will because I've had such a trouble free pregnancy (so far...) I can dream though....

OP posts:
Uwila · 07/02/2005 20:54

Oh yes, good luck on the scans. Will be checking the stata thread. What time ar your scans? Don't leave us waiting around all afternoon to worry (like... ahem... Charley did).

Wondr what the caesarean rate is for elves? Anyone know off hand?

JonahB · 07/02/2005 21:09

I'm with you guys on the scared issue. I'm really scared, but I'm even more scared of a c/section. I read somewhere you tear more easily with a section as you are not totally in control, and being a bit of a control freak I dont like the sound of that at all. Also, my SIL had a horror story with her section (there's always one, isn't there?). The dr couldn't get the needle in properly and had to try 3 or 4 times. OUCHH!!!!However, the first sniff of pain, and i'm sure i'll be inserting the needle myself....

Bubb, trust me, I know all about spoilt cats . I am under no pretense, all my cats have been substitute furry kids.......

Bubb, Trib best of luck for tomorrow. I cant log in till tomorrow night (work, boo) but i'll be thinking about you both....

LipstickMum · 07/02/2005 21:11

#giggles# Well Charley, my dd's birth didn't go horribly wrong, it was just going to be very long with contractions that weren't working, going on for about 16 hours +. I think this time round I will go all airy fairy again and ask for the water birth and aromatherapy blah, but be well prepared for anything!

Uwila · 07/02/2005 21:26

Jonah, what do you mean by you tear more easily with a section? Surely you don't mean down below because you obviously don't tear there at all.

As far as pain goes, I think the natural delivery is far more painful in the event. But (IF all goes well) then you will recover and be up and around much faster and with shorter recovery. However, if you do tear down below, then then I hear you sit on a ring for weeks.

I guess it's a bit of a trade off. Endure it for delivery and have it all over with. Or have a sore tummy (worst part is having to go from lying on your back to sitting up with no one around to help) for a few days. It is pretty painful for a few days.

MrsWednesday · 07/02/2005 22:35

Blimey I've missed a lot of chatter since last Thursday!

Good luck with the scans tomorrow Bubbaloo and Tribpot. Congratulations on your boy Charleypops! So pleased yours went well Scraggy and Megi.

Was reading the messages earlier about little boys and their willies and laughing to myself - looked over to DS who was fast asleep on the settee with his hand nestling in his nappy. He found his very early on and has barely let go of it since.

Will catch up properly tomorrow night - very tiring weekend away (good fun though) and I really should go to bed now.

Good luck tomorrow, looking forward to finding out if we'll have any more players for June Juniors United FC.

Uki · 08/02/2005 00:01

Hi Everyone
It's getting all serious on here now with all the birth talk, which couldn't have come at a better time for me as I have just transferred from the labour ward to the birth centre (no drugs)Big decision !!!

I think i'm like some of you who are more scared or needles than pain< but you can always transfer back if you can't handle the pain. I have a theory about pain thresholds and people who can't handle cold water, i.e can only going swimming when it's like tropical temperature. I think that demonstrates a low pain threshold.
I amuse myself with this thought anyway.
I really laughed when Charley mentioned the indian head massage as part of the birth plan, that sounds good, maybee we could mention other extravagances such as sushi and smoked salmon

tribpot · 08/02/2005 08:04

Morning all,

My scan's scheduled for 1.40 so lord knows what time we will finally get out of there, expect an update in the late afternoon I think!

Bubbaloo, best of luck for this morning, hope it all goes well.
