Veggiemummy · 20/07/2008 22:03

for our DS i was thinking of a name that was also the name of a close friends son so i asked her if that would be so nice she was so excited that we liked the name too and were considering it (didn't use it in the end) but had a friend who named their child same as DS (Alexander) and asked us if that would be ok, actually felt a little bit honoured, no probs with mix ups.

I say go for it if you want it.

JamInMyWellies · 21/07/2008 09:51

Love all the Irish names. We choose a very London name for DS - Archie as we lived in the East End he is a proper cockney born within the sound of bow bells, not that he will care. For this one we are thinking to maybe go for a Scottish name from my heritige but every name either of us comes up with the each other vetos it. I would defo say do not tell anyone when we came home from hosp with DS my MIL told us she didnt like the name then she went on holiday and sent us a postcard addressed with our names and the name she preferred for our DS . Also one of our friends told us her name of choice and then her sister while knowing this called her son it she was not happy.

Anyway how was everyones wk-end ours was good stuck in domesticated bliss going to garden centers and doing the weeding. Have officially turned into my parents. [blush[

20wk scan this Fri is anyone else panicing about this or is it just me being a loon

i'm excited about the scan but always in the back of my mind i worry that there will be problems. I hate the bit at the beginning where they don't let you see the screen, i look at my husband as he can usually see to get him to tell me how it looks. Obviously he can't tell if there are any heart prob etc but i just want to know it's moving.

Lots of movement over the weekend, very wiggly en squirmy rather than kicking. I think this one like rolling.

mibbes · 21/07/2008 10:58

Just had 20 week scan and all is well All the bits are there and in the right place and measuring exactly 20 weeks . Such a relief, I was less worried this time than at the 12 week scan but still got nervous just before we went in. The sonogrpaher was lovely and gave us loads of pics including a brilliant one of the soles of his/her feet !allm

Ooh loving the names ladies. I'd really like a Scottish name as we are Scottish - have a Celtic names book but can't pronounce half of them Irish ones ! DP refuses to discuss until nearer the time (spoilsport) I have lists ready and waiting. Some Scottish names I like are:
Arran, Brodie, Blaine, Calan, Callum/Calum, Caelan, Cameron, Ewan/Euan, Finn, Fraser, Harris
Aila/Ayla, Ailis, Ailsa, Ciara, Iona, Isla.

I bet DP hates them all and I am back to square one ! I also have lots of non-Scottish names on my list too so hopefully there is something on there he likes !

EffiePerine · 21/07/2008 11:20

Congrats on the scan Mibbes

Re Irish names, I love Aoife and would go for it regardless of friend. DS and DH's closest friend have the same name, no confusion so far

Scottish names: we try to slip one in the middle names as DH has Scots family. I love Ailsa, Iona and Isla from your list. Also have a soft spot for Eilidh but it's a bugger to spell!

EffiePerine · 21/07/2008 11:21

oh and I really wanted Patrick as an option for this one, but DH said no

hattyyellow · 21/07/2008 11:27

Mibbes congrats on the scan - did you ask whether the bits were male or female or are you keeping it as a suprise?

I love Irish names and also Scottish ones. I think we have decided on bump's name - although if the 20 week scan changes things to a boy we'll be back to square one again!

katie3677 · 21/07/2008 12:30

I am sorted for a boys name this time, but DH and I can't agree on girls names. Wondering whether I should find out sex at 20 week scan to save some of the heartache, although DH is not at all keen. Is it possible for one of you to find out the sex if the other leaves the room? Or do you think I'd just be setting myself up for 20 weeks of not being able to open my mouth? (I'm not good at keeping secrets!)

LadyThompson · 21/07/2008 12:48

Litterbug - a girl like me. I think I've been the only one up to now!

Mibbes - Glad it went well. Any peep at the sex? What's this about the bit where they don't let you see the screen? Not sure I like the sound of that...

Jam - my scan is on Thursday and I am very apprehensive. My daughter didn't have a properly developed nasal bone on the nuchal scan, so Thursday is when we find out whether or not it's there now...They have ruled out a chromosomal abnormality but a simple physical abnormality is always possible for anybody...and the thought of a baby having to have reconstructive surgery all the way through to adulthood is sooo upsetting...

As for names, we are settled. In fact...there were several names we liked a lot so we have a spare boy's and a girl's name in our back pocket in case we should have a SECOND child.

mibbes · 21/07/2008 12:54

We want a surprise so didn't ask if there were any dangly bits ! Our area has a policy that they won't tell you anyway so there was no decision to be made - which was good as I think DP may have wanted to know...
Katie I'm sure they would tell one of you but that is a long time to keep such a big secret !
Keep the names coming ladies, am waiting to be inspired

mibbes · 21/07/2008 13:10

LadyThomson We got to see the screen the whole time and as she measured each bit she told us it was fine Maybe they do it differently in different parts of the country.

artichokes · 21/07/2008 13:28

Mibbles - big congrats on your scan. Its so nice when you know all is well. Ours is on Thursday and I am soooooo nervous after our questionnable nuchal result.

Lady T - You are not the only one carrying a girl. I was told they were 80% sure this is a girl at our 12 week scan. I suppose it could turn out to be wrong though (but I doubt it!).

Hi to everyone else. After the minute of strong kicks last week I have felt pretty much nothing since. The baby must have been really cross for that one minute and then settled back down .

Veggiemummy · 21/07/2008 13:34

where i am here for the first minute or 2 they have the screen facing them only (although DH could see it) just in case anything has happened to the baby i guess. at the fetal medicine center in london it kind of depended on the sonographer of the 3 scans i had i either saw from the beginning or had to wait a minute. But for one of them i had to crane my neck to try to see under the sonographers arm which was a little annoying.

LadyThompson i hope everything goes ok, i have looked after lots of babies with cleft lip & palate and they always come through their ops etc ok but it is not nice to have to go through all that for parents or babies. Good luck i'll be thinking of you thursday and looking forward to finding out that everything is ok. I know you'll be nervous but try the hot chocolate it might help your nerves.

LadyThompson · 21/07/2008 13:37

Arti, funny how they come up with these percentages! 20% is I suppose a decent chance still that it could be a boy...but maybe they are almost certain that it is a girl but just want to cover themselves. I guess you will find out on Thursday. I'm sorry you have the anxiety from the nuchal scan. I do understand a little and I am crossing my fingers for you! Will be looking anxiously for news from you when posting my own later in the week. Anyone else got a scan this week or is it just me, Arti and Jam?

Veggiemummy · 21/07/2008 14:03

oh i've got to wait until the following Friday 1st April i really want to know the sex as i'm sure it's a girl and also it would be nice for DS to refer it as a baby sister or brother rather than just 'the baby'.

hattyyellow · 21/07/2008 14:16

Veggie do you mean 1st August?! My scan is that day too.

Artichokes and LadyT everything crossed for your scans - hope things go okay.

I am also apparently having a girl - my percentage at the nuchal scan was 70% female which seems fairly good odds to me - I think I'd be quite shocked if it was a boy now!

I've been using the "having another girl so it's an investment for the future" excuse everytime I want to buy clothing for my girls - I can just pass everything down!

In the 20 week scan last time they turned the screen away for the first few minutes just to check all was okay. I actually found it easier, I'd rather in a way they told me rather than me seeing something on the screen (although with my pregnant brain and lack of medical knowledge I doubt I could spot any problems unless they were pointed out to me anyway!)

Getting lots of kicks and wriggles which is lovely - my girls were singing loudly and jumping around right next to me yesterday and the baby was fidgeting like mad as if to say "I'm here too, I want to join in!". Got quite tearful about it all - was a lovely family moment .

EffiePerine · 21/07/2008 14:24

my scn isn't until the 12th (sob)

have been googling stuff on high blood sugar levels in 1st trimester SOMEONE STOP ME NOW

and no-one is responding to my question about early GTT tests (pathetic emoticon)

EffiePerine · 21/07/2008 14:25

as re: weight, according to the hosptial/GP scales I haven't put pn anything so far (clothes would say otherwise). Seems a bit weird to me...

Veggiemummy · 21/07/2008 14:39

oh my goodness 1st April!!!??? my brain has officially left the building. Yes i meant 1st August, there would obviously be no point doing an anomaly scan on the 1st april not much would show up i imagine. Glad your on the same day Hatty are you going to confirm the sex then.

You made me a bit teary about your baby wriggling when your girls were playing. When i was pregnant with DS i always thought i had to enjoy it as it was my first pregnancy and i had no one to look after but myself. I imagine for the 2nd one i would be so busy looking after DS that it wouldnt be special. But actually it even better (apart from symptoms) as i have DS to enjoy it with, he is so interested in the whole thing and loves talking to my belly, rubbing and kissing it. I hope he likes the resulting baby as much.

hattyyellow · 21/07/2008 14:40

Sorry Effie I don't know anything about GTT tests..maybe that's why you haven't had any answers if no else is sure either..have you tried posting it as a separate thread in pregnancy?

Veggiemummy · 21/07/2008 14:44

Effie the weight is a bit weird, my GP scales are always wrong...i'm sure they are about 10kg out i would go with what you clothes are showing you thats what they say for normal weight gain or loss checking, i mean like non pregnancy. not sure about early GTT test when are you having it, sorry you have probably already said but i've forgotten (hey i barely know what month it is).

EffiePerine · 21/07/2008 14:44

sorry should have made it clear it is a separate thread in pregnancy

hattyyellow · 21/07/2008 14:44

Laughing out loud Veggie, my brain moved out around the time I got pregnant last time and has never quite made it back.

I spent half of lunchtime driving aimlessly around town trying to work out where I wanted to park and ended up parking miles away from where I wanted to go. I just couldn't get the brain capacity together to do any vaguely complicated parking manoeuvres!

That's lovely that your son is so involved in your pregnancy - he sounds like such a little sweetheart, I'm sure he'll make a great big brother.

EffiePerine · 21/07/2008 14:45

test is next week so I will be 18 weeks. It's picking up on my blood tests at 12 weeks, which they neglected to tell me showed high blood sugar levels

I am prob getting myself worked up over nothing (wouldn't be the first time a pg woman has overreacted )

EffiePerine · 21/07/2008 14:46

oh and DS's interaction with this pg is confined to poking my bump and saying TUBBY a lot
