Effie what about phoning NHS Direct? They should be able to at least shed a bit of light on things? I rang them when I was panicking about stomach cramps a while back and they were very kind and helpful..

Or would your GP ring you back? (That might just be me living in a little rural area where GP's have time to do things like that!)

I'm so sorry I can't offer any answers but there must be someone/some body that can help rather than you having to fret..

EffiePerine · 21/07/2008 14:52

good point Hatty, there is a mw telephone line somewhere based at my hospital (no chance getting my GP to call me as it's a v busy group practice). Will see if I can get hold of anyone...

Veggiemummy · 21/07/2008 15:02

i'm sure someone else on here has had a GTT test recently but not sure who? I had a friend just had them at 28 weeks everything was fine and she didnt have an elevated blood sugar level but her mother has age onset diabetes so they tested her. It seemed a bit of overkill as this is my friends second pregnancy and she had no problems with bloods sugars in first. I think they like to just double check. I think it is unusual for gestational diabetes to show up in the first trimester but not really definite. sorry probably not much help.

katie3677 · 21/07/2008 15:14

EffiePerine I responded to your post on GTT on this thread a while back. Post the link to your other thread and I'll see if I can add any further pearls of wisdom.

So sorry Effie, don't even know what GTT is. I hope someone can put your mind at rest soon though...

My scan's on 1st August as well - can't wait! Am going to remain in the dark re sex, though. And in fact will hide the pictures from other people, as sure they'll point at it and say things like "oh it's definitely a boy/girl" etc. What point of "I don't want to find out the sex" do people not understand?!!!

I am now influenced by so many people telling me they think it's a boy that I'm starting to believe it. Seriously - how do people know that when it's inside me and I don't have a clue. I guess it's 50/50 chance, so if they're right, they can say -oh I knew! They just had a lucky guess!!

Anyway, we've got a few names up our sleeves - think we might go for Max or Alex if it's a boy - or Emma, Alex or Rebecca if it's a girl. But probably end up being none of them! I really like Elodie and Maisie, but DH hates them!

Got back from France - our flight was due to get in at 10pm, so thought I'd be in bed by around midnight. It was massively delayed and I finally got to bed close to 4am. Have been at work all day and am frankly knackered. Roll on bed. Doing my SIL make up trial for her wedding tonight (don't work as it, but qualified as a make up artist a couple of years ago). All I want to do is crash out! Oh well, nevermind!

Hope all well with everyone!

Doozie · 21/07/2008 17:32

Hello Dec 08 Mummies!

I thought it was about time for me to join in the Dec 08 ante-natal club. I had my 20 wks scan today, I?m actually 21w+6ds, and so far so good ? yippee! A huge relief! Can?t believe I?m actually having a baby! Now I'm over that half way milestone and am starting to look pregnant rather than just looking like my chocolate habit getting the better of me, it now somehow seems legit. Maybe it?s time to start telling the family and friends ? smock top fashions hide everything!

I hope I can get over all the anxieties and just relax, be excited about the pregnancy and joining in on the thread.

hattyyellow · 21/07/2008 17:35

Welcome Doozie and congratulations on getting to the halfway mark - it does feel a bit of a milestone doesn't it!

Is this your first child?

Verso · 21/07/2008 17:37

my scan is this friday too. Really nervous (despite good NT results) as have had 2 missed m/cs, so associate scans w sad times. Mind you the baby has been kicking loads today, so hope all will be ok.

Re GTT I only know what I've heard anecdotally - fasting glucose level checked, then drink v sweet solution, then blood checked again after a specified time. M/w at my booking said I might have to do it as she was convinced I 'MUST' have had GD last time as she was a big baby. (never had probs wee-wise that time or this - yet). Hope this ramble is vaguely useful!

Doozie · 21/07/2008 18:35

Ah yes, I should say, I sound a bit like nervous ninnie because I've had a had a horrid history. This is my 6th pregnancy and hopefully all going well, this will be my first child. Fingers crossed, positive thoughts and all that!

Verso I know exactly how you feel - having scans fill me with dread. It is hard to disassociate them with the bad experiences. However Baby Verso sounds like they are very happy and healthy in there! All good signs! Good luck for Friday.

Doozie · 21/07/2008 18:41

Verso are you going to find out the sex?

I didn't want to know and luckily DH was the same. If it couldn't of been helped I would not have been disappointed as it is exciting to find out anytime, but as it was LO had its legs firmly shut and the doctor didn't go probing.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 21/07/2008 18:56

Hi all - I'm off to Geneva tomorrow for a few days (so excited ) so just checking in before I go. Will be DS's first time on a plane.

Welcome Doozie, sounds like you've had a hard time, so glad this pg is going well for you

We've agreed not to find out the gender (didn't last time) as we're happy to be surprised. Last time I could just 'see' myself with a boy, this time no idea at all. Lots of kicks now, really reassuring.

Effie - I had GTT last time, I waited at the surgery in between blood tests. TBH I was too blardy hungry and faint to do anything else other than sit in the waiting room. I had a handbag full of food for afters otherwise I would have keeled over (I'm not good when hungry at the best of times...) The test was neg, but if it had been GD the first step is to control with diet. Hope test goes OK for you too

BTW I think you had Verity on your list? I love that name, but haven't even discussed names with DH yet. He tends to be on the solid traditional end of the spectrum e.g. Katherine and I'm angling for hippy stuff like Moonbeam .

Veggiemummy · 21/07/2008 19:33

Hi Doozie nice to 'meet you' cyberwise and all that. I'm easily emotional lately and had a little tear when i found out how many pregnancies you have had, your so brave for keeping on trying. Is this the furthest along you have been. Hope you can start enjoying it now, looking forward to sharing your pregnancy, glad you joined.

Beans my DS is an Alexander, excellent name choice. Apparently it is the top name choice for educated couples. DH and i have a giggle about that we wonder who came up with a list of names of children produced by educated couples, did they do a poll, is there a list for non educated couples. Anyhoo, i also love Maisie for a girl and it's one of our (my) choices, although, DH isn't very keen, i also like Daisy (it was the name of a sweet little girl my mum fostered for several months) but again DH not real keen on it.

I went for a long walk this afternoon to do a few errands, instead of driving. Very proud of exercise and environmental benefit. However got a bit hungry so had to pop into a shop for sustenance, i bought 2 dark chocolate bars, but in my defense i only ate one. I bought the other one home and told DH i had bought it for him.

Veggiemummy · 21/07/2008 19:37

Have fun in Geneva Rhinestone enjoy the flight DS will love it. Just a tip don't take any noisy toys on the plane, you will want to throw them out the window but you can't.

poisondwarf · 21/07/2008 19:50

Not posted for ages so welcome to Doozie and other newcomers & sorry to read about LittlePeanut & minster's losses.

Got my scan this Friday as well (will be 20+4) - looks like there's a few of us then. Looking forward to it and hopefully will be able to find out the sex if the baby's cooperating. We found out last time - I would have preferred not to really but DP was so into the idea - and I was really glad we did in the end, partly cos I'd been hoping for a girl so had time to adjust to it being a (lovely lovely) boy and partly because it was so nice to be able to call him 'he'. Also saves a lot of headscratching with names - I used up all the names I liked with DS and haven't a clue for this one...

chutneymary · 21/07/2008 20:01

My scan's not til the 13th August, when i'll be 23 weeks. We have them late round here. Still not happy about Kings, but don't know what to do about it.

Effie - I've had 2 GTTs and they are fine. TBH, I would sit tight at the surgery and read a book for a couple of hours rather than fanny about going home, unless you live next door of course! TIming is crucial to the result so easier if you are on the spot. I had both of mine in first pg as I hada huge baby and excess fluid detected. It's fine but you can feel a bit feeble as you don't eat for so long. I got the results on the spot, but that was at hospital so you may have to wait if you are sending your bloods off. I think the first step if the test is positive is to assess how bad your sugar is before they decide on treatment. Usually you can start with diet alterations and then move on to insulin if that isn't enough. I wouldn't worry about being induced early or all the other horrors on the internet though as you'll be put under a consultant with a special interest in all of the problems associated with it so may be able to avoid the nasties.

Welcome Doozie, good to have you on board. Good luck for the flight Rhinestone - take plenty of snacks, drinks and sticker books for your DS.

More later.

majormoo · 21/07/2008 20:03

minster thank you for sharing your story. Do hope you are coping OK.

Mibbes glad your scan went well. Had mine today too and all was fine. We did not find out the sex although the sonongrapher though this was not 'logical' as we were peeking and trying to guess!

daisydora · 21/07/2008 20:15

effie my DD says 'oohh baby tummy' quite a lot and then proceeds to whip up my top. Tonight this was in the garden in front of a neighbour. Think the sight of my expanding waistline has probably made him a little peaky

We didn't find out sex either, although I was convinced a saw a willy - was probably the cord!!!!! DH just sat gawping in amazement. he actually managed to feel it kick last night which made him very happy

rosmerta · 21/07/2008 20:30

evening all, been at my tutorial today so first chance I've had to post!

majormoo glad your scan went well

doozie hi and welcome. I'm so glad this pregnancy seems to be going well for you

veggie lol @ buying one for dh! I found a shop today with spicy tomato wheat crunchies so I bought 4 packets , dh thinks 2 are for him silly man!

Having said that, dh surprised me tonight with the news that if I really really want a homebirth he'll be ok with it . This is after him firmly saying no, he didn't believe it was safe blah blah blah! So now I need to know if I should contact the midwives now and talk to someone about it, or wait until my next mw appt which isn't until 24 weeks!

Veggiemummy · 21/07/2008 20:55

Rosemerta thats fantastic!!! i'm having a homebirth.

You can probably just wait til the next apt. I have a friend who was going to have a hospital birth but changed her mind at her 28weeks. So i think it should be fine, but it would hurt to give them a call if your midwives are easily contactable.

Verso · 21/07/2008 21:15

Hi there, Doozie. I'm always pleased to hear about a successful scan - but after your experiences I think you really deserved it. Good for you for keeping going. You are very brave. We're not finding out the gender. I didn't with DD and it was really nice having the surprise on the day.

chutney is there any chance you could change hospitals if you're not happy with Kings? I'm sure you're allowed to change your mind (just make sure whatever you choose that you get postnatal care. I picked St George's last time because that's where DH used to go to see his MS consultant so I knew it - and it wasn't til the day I was discharged that they said "No - you were eligible for antenatal care with your postcode but your postcode isn't covered postnatally so you'll have to arrange your postnatal midwife care yourself" - NICE!!!)

Had a very weepy day yesterday. Was starting to get concerned the past week or so that I was getting antenatal depression - but thankfully felt much better today. (I've had PND so I know the signs... am very glad the clouds parted and I felt perkier today!!)

Veggiemummy · 21/07/2008 21:26

oh verso you poor thing, glad your feeling better today.

feel a bit cheeky DH just kindly shared half 'his' Bounty bar with me.
