and here's where I am going!!

TwilightSurfer · 23/06/2008 19:47

Captain I think I remember the brick in the pants walk.....OH THE MEMORIES.

Dear First Timers,
Your under-carriage will return to a "close" to normal state by the end of six weeks BUT until then be aware it will feel and look like you skidded down a gravel road on it (legs wrapped around your head / bum on the ground). AND it will be swollen, causing you to walk like there's something between your legs (like a brick).

twilight if I was going to be staying somewhere like you I would be booking myself in for the week - no joke!

The maternity ward here is like hell compared to that! Last time I refused to be admitted onto the ward as I knew it would take hours to then be sent home so they let me go straight from delivery suite. Arrived at about 8am, finally examined at 9am, told I was 4cm and that it would be at least 4 or 5 hours (believed them in blind faith!) at 9:10 demanded an epidural or a knife to cut the child out as there was no way I could cope with 5 hours like that! At 9:20 DH ran down corridor shouting my wife is having a baby! At 9:30 said baby arrives as midwife finally runs into room. At 10:00 midwife leaves and we sit and wait on our own for an hour and a half (oh hearing test was done then) I had a shower, took some photos, sent a few texts and then went home - got home at 12pm just as outside water pipe exploded! Ah the memories of that day!
This time I want a rest but I know that maternity ward isn't the place to get it. Especially having been in twice. the modwives are lovely but v busy and don't make those who aren't immediately recovering from a c-section or 1st time mums a priority. Food is grim, noise is terrible and I always always always end up next to someone who I am sure is sent by some TV programme for candid TV.
Sadly this time looks like I'll have no choice.
Oh and my hospital just won some award for being one of the best!

Buckets · 23/06/2008 19:51

LOL at TS taking half an hour to dry her super long hair with the dryer and then sticking a ball cap or bandana over the top.

Ah the advantages of a planned CSection . Probably won't take shampoo as don't expect to get too sweaty, will take soap though but only for the body, can't bear it on my face. Hopefully only in for 2 nights again, touch wood. And I'm going for an eyelash dye in advance so I don't need to bring mascara or make-up remover wipes!

Dizzy - antibac hand gel is everywhere on maternity wards these days, probably more efficient formula than the little holiday bottles we can buy. Wipes is a very good idea though.

Don't forget a couple of bibs, as reminded by Cyteen was it?

TwilightSurfer · 23/06/2008 19:55

Geezzzz. I'd be more than happy to let all of you come stay with me to have your LOs.

Captain, yours doesn't look too bad BUT they could have a least put a "clean" chair beside the bed in the delivery room picture. The one that's there looks like a million butts have sat in it.

Sausageandmash · 23/06/2008 20:00

Oh, the sweet memories of the 'post delivery' ward.....
First night, hormonal bliss (following emergency c-sec), a light, but no buzzer. Second night, a move to a twin room with a buzzer, but no light. Third night, my own 'amenity' room, with light, AND buzzer, but no staff (I think they might have stuffed me into a broom cupboard and then forgotten about me, for all the attention I was given! Ah, happy days!

gigglegirl · 23/06/2008 20:01

both those look like the hilton compared to mine

you lucky buggers!

View - car park from 5th floor!
Ventilation - none
Toilets - grim
No. sharing one toilet or shower - 12 or 6 if you are in the lucky bay!
Distance between beds - a curtain width
Number of buzzers going in night - 100s
Cost of patientline - extortionate
Stress levels when your other DC come - off the scale
Sleep - you are kidding!
Ability to have a private conversation about your body - not a chance
Food - mystery meat and white bread, plus melted ice cream and watered down soup. really useful when the doc has said make sure you eat high fibre food.

Other than that it's great!

Seriously though if it is your first baby there are ways of coping:

  1. make firends and smile at the midwives - most people don't and they will go the extra mile if you are nice and don't take the piss!
  2. Ear plugs and or an Ipod will drown out the noise of other patients
  3. DOn't be afraid of closing your curtains - they are there for privacy and if you want it take it - you prob won't meet these peopel again
  4. Listen to a few conversations to suss out the bay you are on before you start chatting. Last time I was in I made 'a new best friend' she parked herself on my bed and didn't leave as I made the mistake of chatting!
  5. Freeze a granary loaf and some nice sandwich fillings, some posh crisps and other nice but healthy snacks and ask someone to make them up and bring them in daily.
  6. If anyone asks what you want - say please don't send flowers but one of those gorgeous fruit hampers would be really welcome. You will really enjoy it. I love junk food but after giving birth and whenever I have stayed in hospital *always pregnancy related) have also wanted fruit and posh fruit would be great!
Buckets · 23/06/2008 20:02

Was just boggling at the 5700 births a year at Nottingham but then checked Southampton and it's 5000 anyway, inc homebirths which are quite big here.

Gigglegirl, what an adventure! At least you got an examination though, so many MWs seem to think they can tell how dilated you are by looking in your eyes .

gigglegirl · 23/06/2008 20:05

CC I might move to Nottingham! More manageable than Chattanooga! We have to pay £80 a night for a private room although not normally available and you may or may not get your own shower and loo. Oh and you have to go and get your dinner yourself!

sazzles that looks like corbar birth unit in buxton which is where I had wanted to go. Like you say not swish but I have heard that it is so caring and that there is always cake and a cup of tea available for those late night feeds. My itchy liver condition and DH's imability to drive have put pay to that!

The joys of a hosptial stay would love to have my baby in the am, stay for just the afternoon on the maternity ward, then return home for tea

What nice treats are you all thinking of on the run upto the birth? i'd like to go swimming, get my hair done maybe a pedicure.

TwilightSurfer · 23/06/2008 20:38

Bigboy I'm with you on getting hair done & a pedicure but I'm staying out of the pool as everytime I get in the baby flips to BREECH!!!

Well you know the reality tv camera crew only has so much tape to use....two hours just won't do. Producers all agree 15 minutes is the limit...

ts i'm hoping for baby to stay breech so i can have a cesarean so will keep up with swimming! but there again that means longer in hospital Do u think it's possible to book an epidural in advance on a certain day & time aswell

Buckets · 23/06/2008 21:11

LOL our pre-school is like that although it does operate a catchment area policy. Just became the only pre-school in town with a double outstanding ofsted report so this baby will be on the list come September, just in case the policy changes!
Must go watch that Upstairs Downstairs Love thing, apparently it's a bit naughty...

labour - don't want that - obviously I will be one of those women who is interviewed in take a break complete with glittery, shiny pink lip gloss, bleach blonde hair with a few darks brown extensions and a PVC top who goes to the loo and oh put it pops!

gigglegirl · 23/06/2008 21:23

sazzles not sure how the transfer thing works. Think if I am induced it will only be a one night stay but if C-section obv. longer. Other complication is that DH doesn't drive
