tinkhasagorgeousbean · 13/07/2008 15:15

hi mm glad i am not the only one then lol
i have decided not to breastfeed this time, dd1 didnt feed right and still doesnt and hated it

tinkhasagorgeousbean · 13/07/2008 15:32

have added belly pics anymore to c ladies

LenniEd · 13/07/2008 15:55

I wasn't able to try and b/f DD due to medication for my arthritis. I would like to feed this one myself but am concerned about the nights when I am usually stiff and my joints are painful. If the baby is a bad sleeper then we might have to supplement with formula in the nights so that DH can help out if I am unable to feed her. My midwife/GP have thought it all out for me and reckon that I could probably manage 6weeks without my meds so I can breastfeed for at least a month. I'm hoping I will be able to last a bit longer but we'll see.

MissHairspray · 13/07/2008 16:55

Hey ladies, just doing a bit of online research on pushchairs and it is v. confusing, so thought some of you seasoned mums might have some advice instead!
Do I need something that has a carrycot attachment (and therefore no need to buy moses basket), or would I be better off with a pushchair with a lie-flat position? I want the baby to be comfortable but I also don't really want to buy something that will only last six months, either because baby outgrows it or it is so heavy to push I can't be bothered anymore. Thanks in advance!

LittleSquirt · 13/07/2008 16:59

LennieD - wow, good for you. That sounds really tough.

Tink - your bump is gorgeous! I want a bump too! I feel like I'm starting to get one but I think it might be too many pies after not eating much for 6 weeks when feeling very nauseous. Not sure. But DH will start taking weekly pics of me starting tonight so we can see the progression, it's very exciting! My friend also lent me a doppler last weeek so DH and I will try to listen to bean tonight. I hope we do pick something up, I know it might be difficult at 13+2.

MrsMontano and rrrayray - enjoy your upcoming scans, they are amazing! I am very happy because I got the results of our combined nuchal/bloods screening yesterday and we are very low risk - 1:3200. I feel I can properly relax now!!!

tinkhasagorgeousbean · 13/07/2008 17:33

lennied having arthritis must be stressful
misshairspray i would go with a pushchair with a lie down position for when the newborn and buy a moses basket seperate.
moses baskets are alot lighter than carrycots if you need to move baby around in moses.
i had a carrycot attachment for dd1 didnt use it that much.
going to get a quinny buzz for this one hopefully as it lies right back for newborn and you can attach maxi cosi car seat ( which we have from dd1) to save carrying baby around as car seats so heavy.
little squirt cheers hun
i am going to buy a doppler you should be able to hear heartbeat @ 13+2 good luck
i am still waiting for nuchal blood results plus others.
gr8 news about yours!!

LenniEd · 13/07/2008 19:40

MissHairspray Things I would think about before buying are:

You will need a bed for the baby of some description - most people like to have a moses basket/crib/similar first bed and then move to a cot but you can use a cot straight away. You will want something that you can have in your own room for the first few months as night feeds are easier and it reduces SIDs risk. We had a moses basket last time which was good because it was easy to move it around the house so DD was always in the same room as us for the first weeks and we could use it if we were visiting other people. But DD grew out of it by about 8 weeks old - although some babies are still in them closer to 4/5months old. If I get another moses basket I will get one of the larger ones from places like Mamas and Papas rather than the narrow ones you can buy in places like Toys R Us and Mothercare. Other options are an Amby Natures Nest or a co-sleeper cot which attaches to your bed. The Amby's are portable and reasonably easy to move around the house, they are good for colicky babies and are meant to promote better sleep - although people I know who have used them have had mixed results on sleep and some babies just don't take to them. The co-sleepers are less portable but ideal if you are planning on breastfeeding. You can also have a crib, which will last longer than a moses basket and it is possible to get rocking ones. Cribs are also harder to transport to other people's houses and aren't as easy to move around the house. I know a few people who have used a carrycot for daytime naps, but I'm not sure how you would get on using one at night - you would need to make sure the mattress was thick enough to prevent the babies head from getting flat spots from too much pressure on the soft bones. The final option is to co-sleep, but be prepared for a few disparaging looks from midwives/family/health visitors. DD co-slept until she was about 7 months for at least part of the night.

On the pushchair front you need to think about your own lifestyle. If you use a lot of public transport you will definately end up getting rid of a bulky pram asap and most people end up with a lightweight buggy by about 6 months old. If you walk alot though you will find it easier to get a pushchair which is easy to push and comfortable for the baby (as otherwise they want out the whole time). We walk loads and have a mountain buggy for that reason. If you use your car to get to most places then it might make sense to have something that fits easily in the boot of your car with room left for shopping and something you can attach the car seat to - but be very careful about leaving a newborn in a car seat for too long as they are not good for their spines or their soft skulls. Finally I would beware of anything that is awkward to use as thats the last thing you need when juggling a newborn or anything particularly wide as it is hard enough to get around some shops as it is without extra width. At the end of the day you will use a pushchair to push a baby around and a lot of companies try to sell their products with add ins like changing bags and other things which often aren't really that useful so try not to get sold on one particular feature. Whatever you choose, you will definately definately need to be able to have the baby flat at first - this is really important for both their head and their spine. A lie-flat pushchair does the job just as well as a carrycot.

The products topic on here has loads of threads on beds/pushchairs and there are also loads of product reviews on the 'reviews' section on the main page.

That was a long answer! Sorry if I've bored you stupid!

fymandbean · 13/07/2008 21:33

rrrayray - you need to hget that changed - you'll be too late for the Nuchal test (max is 13+6)

spink me too - bf was soooo much harder than I thought it was going to be - managed to persevere and exclusively bf ds for 6 months. Want to do this one longer though as I am working from home now .

fymandbean · 13/07/2008 21:35

anyone else waiting for a scan - I'm not for another 7 days I'm fed up of hiding at home cos of my luvverly bump - I even saw an old (male) friend and he started to say oh you're expect.... and I cut across him talking about something completely different! It's so hard to hide this time...

largeginandtonic · 13/07/2008 21:50

Evening ladies!

Hope you have all had a nice weekend.

Fym roll on the scan date so you can be out and proud

I am sure i felt the baby move, the last one i felt at about 14 weeks i think. Am 14 weeks tomorrow. It is zooming by!

I have bf all of mine, am super stubborn though and far too lazy to bottle feed. The last baby was useless at feeding, shallow latch and not very efficient. I ended up going to a bf clinic with him, i felt a fool as he was #6 It was just his technique though and i persevered until he was a little over 6 months. He was a huge baby born (9lb 2oz) and put on a lb a week for the first 3 weeks, then tailed off and fell through his percentiles. I stayed away from the hv, knew he was ok. It is daunting but remember all babies feed differently. Just because you had a bad time last time does not mean you will again!

Am off to bed, have had 7 children today as ds had his birthday and had a little friend to stay. Too many hyper children!!!

tinkhasagorgeousbean · 14/07/2008 09:26

morning

i m 14wks thurs time is flying by isnt it

Spink · 14/07/2008 09:53

morning!
Oh, so nice to read about all your bfing experiences, really reassuring. Like you. G&T, I am lazy and the idea of having to do bottles isn't good!!
Oddly, my boobs have started to get sore, didn't have that earlier on (but then I was bfing ds for the first 2 months so maybe that had numbed them!)

I'm 14 weeks today! Hurrah! Belly is OUT, am going to copy your idea LittleSquirt and ask dh to take pics, didn't do it last time, but kept a diary (well, every now and again) and want this bean to have something special and different from pg like Spinkle did..

I am definitely getting some movements too, just teeny ones but it is such an unmistakeable feeling. Last time didn't til about 18 weeks though so it feels very early!

Good luck for all scans this week!!!!

rrrayray · 14/07/2008 10:28

Movements? Already?! Ahhh how exciting for you guys, as a firstimer i don't know i will be feeling them anytime soon. Although when i got out of the bath the other day my stomach seemed to move slightly, but that maybe me seeing things?

fymandbean Ah, i hadn't really thought of that, That is the earliest scan they can schedule. I guess i'll call the doctor and see what they think?! What does the Nuchal test look for anyway? i guess its pretty importants.. Eeeeeeeeek!

littleaquirt i love your idea of a photo diary, have told dp we are doing one. Did you start BEFORE you got a bump? I'm not showing yet, i guess i'll waiting till my bump makes an appearance, very exciting!

tinkhasagorgeousbean i was going to get a Quinny too, but i went into the baby shop near us (independent one) and have decided against the buzz, There is a new system out called the Nipabout from Out n About. It too will take the maxi cosi car seat, and lie flat, but its Soooooooooooooooo much lighter, has a bigger shopping basket and is CHEAPER too! Just thought you might want to check it out!

My sickness is FINALLY easing off a little bit, i feel sicky, but am BEING sick Less. Although the tiredness is in full swing, i went to bed at 7.30pm last night! ha!

Enjoy your scans Ladies! xxxx

LittleSquirt · 14/07/2008 10:41

rrrayray - the nuchal scan is a screening test for downs. Not everyone wants it done but if you do want it done, then fymandbean is right, the date they gave you would be too late. You should definitely call them.

Regarding the weekly pics diary, I would say do try to start before you get a bump. I already have a small bump and I wish we'd taken one before it came out. It was funny actually because DH took my picture last night but when I got up this morning, he pointed out that my bump was about 1/2 the size!! I guess I was just really bloated last night! So he took another one this morning and we'll use that one as the first one!

Spink - soooooo jealous that you are feeling movement already! But at least we heard our bean's heartbeat with our doppler last night (DH was sooo excited!) so that was pretty special for a start. I can't really can't wait to feel movement though!

MsSparkle · 14/07/2008 11:10

Morning all,

I have a date for my 20 week scan! It's on the 14th August Time is seriously going by really quickly!

I think i feel movement too, i am 15+3 weeks now.

missjackson · 14/07/2008 12:14

Quiet moment at work -- have taken the opportunity to look at all your profiles so feel like I know you all a bit better!

Well, just past 13 weeks and over the past couple of days have had some really weird shooting/ twisting pains just below my rib cage and around my belly button I think it's 'growing pains' as my organs adjust to my expanding uterus, but will check it out with the mw tomorrow have my first appt! Has anyone else experienced pains like these? Sheer agony but they go away as quickly as they come. I had an 'inverted uterus' before I got pg, so maybe it's still inverted and causing a problem?

Also, did you all get your combined nuchal/ blood results in the post, or will my mw tell me? My nuchal was 1.5mm but I was told the blood result would take some time.

Sorry for all the Qs... Happy Monday everyone!

MsSparkle · 14/07/2008 12:19

Hi missjackson, Yes i had those pains too and found out they were just the result of my uterus expanding. I asked my midwife who confirmed this too

LittleSquirt · 14/07/2008 13:27

missJackson - for the results of the combined/nuchal tests, I got mine in the post. They said they would take 7 to 10 days and I got them about a week after my scan (they had taken bloods before my scan). But I am sure that they will be communicated to your midwife too.

LittleSquirt · 14/07/2008 13:29

sorry, meant the "combined nuchal/blood tests"!

tinkhasagorgeousbean · 14/07/2008 13:31

fymandbean · 14/07/2008 14:04

On a happy note my hospital called to say they could no longer do my scan on Monday only to find a spare appointment tomorrow yay!!!

gr8 news about scan fym

fourlittlefeet · 14/07/2008 16:05

afternoon all . been busy reading novel so no mumsnet . too much to comment on but all generally sounds well.

am I the only one on this thread still breastfeeding their last DC? I'm in two minds whether to wean/ wait for her to wean / be a lentil weaver and tandem feed. I hate decisions like this. think I'll ignore it for a bit .

I definitely had ups and downs feeding her during the last 14 months. Especially at the beginning when I felt that feeding her was ALL I was doing. Lasinoh definitely helped with cracked nipples, as did a proper latch (you hook them off if it hurts at all). Only split/cut I got was from the breastpump. Still pretty nasty though!

Ditto to you all, i feel much "rounder" in the evening, and its rock solid!!! ha! I guess its maybe being bloated, or that our intenstines are being Squashed up-- Excuse the correct medical terms! haha!
