Talk of floradix reminded me to start taking it again I was really tired around 9 weeks and took it for about ten days, and felt much better so of course I stopped taking it! And now I feel terrible again. Have brought my bottle into work so there's no excuse. Yuck, I hate that taste!

missjackson · 11/07/2008 12:48

www.guardian.co.uk/society/2008/jul/11/nhs.health1

Interesting article in today's guardian (G2) about the fact that many female obstreticians choose an elective caesarian over other birth methods it's really made me think. It questions the assumption that we should all aim for a 'natural' birth since less than 50% of us will achieve that seems like doctors are much more willing to protect their pelvic floor, and see medical intervention as a bonus rather than a worse-case scenario.

mel2005 · 11/07/2008 13:42

i have been debating c-sections over the past few weeks. its certainly not something i would elect for in a single pregnancy but reading about what has happened to some twins born naturally on the tamba website i am terrified to choose a natural birth. i think i will put the babies safety first (as it is riskier for the mother to have a c-section). i am going to ask for an elective c-section unless both babies are in a fantastic position and the hospital can check that the cords are not at risk of coming out first.
what that article doesnt say is that you cant drive for at least 6 weeks. you will have to stay in hospital for at least a few days and you will find it difficult to carry the baby. it will be a nightmare for me with two children to get to nursery and two babies to look after.

missjackson · 11/07/2008 14:34

Hi Mel you're right about the recovery period doctors can no doubt afford plenty of extra help to get them through those first weeks while they recover from a major operation. I hope you have plenty of help planned. Gosh, I'm daunted enough by the thought of one baby to look after -- you'll have four altogether!

Personally I really want a home birth, without intervention, because I'm scared of hospitals, but this article did make me think more positively about other options -- especially the final line which points out that the whole reason we go through pregnancy is not for the childbirth experience but for the actual child!

mel2005 · 11/07/2008 15:05

i had a hospital birth and forceps for my first baby which was traumatic. i opted for a homebirth for my second and it was lovely and relaxed (even though the midwives only just made it) it certainly didnt hurt as much and was a fantastic experience. i felt really incontrol, we had visitors up to a couple of hours before i gave birth, it was like a normal day. i think because i was so relaxed it made it really easy. there isnt alot of mess and the midwives take everything away, you certainly get better care if you have a baby at home. we are not far from the hospital and the ambulance station, if we had been far out i possibly would have had her in hospital.

if i had been carrying a single baby it would have been another homebirth, i had already booked it at my 8 week midwife appointment. it is certainly not allowed for twins and i wouldnt even think about it as there are just too many risks.

elkiedee · 11/07/2008 15:27

I can see the extra issue with twins but, while I was induced, had a slow labour and a ventouse was used at the end, it went quite well and I was stitched well, didn't lose much blood etc. I was very relieved not to end up having to have a CS. Even so I was away for 3 nights - one for induction (labour started that night), one giving birth (at 4.29 am) and one afterwards, and that's more than enough, especially as we've got DS1 to think about too now.

Had my midwife appointment today and she did not have any of my blood results (9 bottles worth of blood taken) and said that the lab has lost my blood specimens!!!! So I had to have blood taken again today - urghh. On a poitive note she did a doppler of the baby's heart beat - which was strong and a relief to hear the baby's heart beat!

This dreaded rain - hope it goes away for the weekend.

MissHairspray · 11/07/2008 18:51

Evening ladies, congrats on all the positive scans. I'm 14 +2 now so officially in the 2nd trimester.
Told work this week and had my first sober leaving do last night - not as bad as I thought except for all my drunk colleagues pointing at my tummy and saying 'oooh look she's got a little bump, show us your bump'. I thought I would have a few more weeks before random bump attacks!

I went to the French Connection sale yesterday and they had loads of nice 'normal' clothes that would do as maternity (assuming you like smock tops and dresses).

Am laughing away at all of the comments from the rellies. My worst so far was when MIL said she knew I was pregnant because of the tummy I had when I last saw her - in the middle of April. grrr

Have a good weekend xx

LenniEd · 11/07/2008 19:49

Births... already! I'm impressed, it took my last ante-natal thread about 6 months before we started on labour discussions!

DD was a hospital birth - I can't have a homebirth here in winter as the road conditions can be bad and it is a long way to the hospital. If I could, I would since I don't like hospitals. Last time I was in hospital from Christmas Day when my waters broke to 29th Dec (day after DD born) so this time am hoping I won't be in so long. My midwife has offered me domino care so I am going to go for that as long as everything is ok by then.

If anyone is anxious about labour then I would strongly recommend the book 'Blooming Birth' which I bought last time. It really helped me work through my concerns and make a birth plan I was happy with. Although have to admit the birth plan was binned as soon as my waters broke early!

LenniEd · 11/07/2008 19:51

Loosey I would love to go shopping

Spink · 11/07/2008 20:30

evening it's the weekend! hurrah!!
I'm feeling very comfy now that the maternity clothes have come out of storage and my old clothes are packed away. The boggle couldn't cope any more...
I have been looking at the Isabella Oliver site - really want the jeans and another couple of bits - but we have a cash flow problem at the mo so I just have to wait. the credit card is SO CALLING ME.
I might be at the Earls Ct show too - maybe we should wear pink carnations and meet at the Valley Cushion stand for quick cuppa (or slurp of Floradix? what is that? feel like I'm missing out on something good..)

talking of births, have to admit I've been drifting towards the childbirth threads and lurking.. reminding myself all about it! Still far enough away to indulge without too much fear!
Hoping for a home birth with water pool this time...

oh, and if anyone is thinking double buggies, whaddya think about the duowalker easywalker? www.easywalker.nl/usa/duowalker.html

moosemama · 11/07/2008 20:54

Spink

Floradix here

Its basically a herbal iron, B6 and B12 supplement that many midwives recommend during pregnancy. Its better for a lot of people than taking iron tablets as its gentler on the stomach and doesn't cause the dreaded constipation!

I've been using it for a week now and am starting to feel much better (well I'm still awake at quarter to nine so that can't be bad).

btw I am hoping to go for a home birth with a pool as well, my midwife was very keen when I suggested it. I like the fact that you get 2 midwives to yourself rather than one that keeps leaving the room to deal with several other women in other rooms. Hospital is literally only 5 min drive from door to door so transferring would be quick if it became necessary.

Last time I was only in the hospital for an hour and a half after 4 days of slow labour and really felt that it was an unnecessary interruption to the process, so to speak.

Anyone else got serious preggy brain? I am sooo forgetful at the moment, I keep forgetting to ring up and book my 16wk appointment. The thought enters my head for half a second - "Oh yes must remember to do that ...." and then its gone again. I was hoping to go at 15.5 as the kids will still be in school, but think I have left it too late to get an appointment, that means 2 kids and me on 2 buses to get there and another 2 back again - aaargh!

LooseyC · 11/07/2008 21:08

Did go shopping today and get a few tops.. But only spent £35 so still feeling virtuous .

Spink that buggy looks good, bit like that mountain buggy, but I've not tried any out. All of these sort seem to cost a fortune! Will probably be something cheaper or ebay for us - but I am such a novice that it brings me out in a cold sweat when I press the bid button (only done it once so far!)... Others will be laughing at that! Who was the expert - mel? I'm sure I will soon become addicted though...

MsSparkle · 11/07/2008 21:22

Hello all,

I am sure i can feel things going on inside. Sort of like mild tummy ache but it's not tummy ache. My midwife says it is probably the baby! I said i thought it was too early but she said second time around it's possible to feel it earlier. I am 15 weeks today!

I have been thinking about the birth today. People say it doesn't hurt as much second time around but i don't want to get myself prepared for an easier, less painful birth only to be shocked that it may be just as bad as the first time! I am such a wimp when it comes to pain

My midwife said i should try breastfeeding this time. I gave up after 5 days with dd due to cracked, sore, bleeding nipples and the fact i was making myself ill with worry about every feed. I think i might give it a go but this time make sure i get the help i need to breastfeed properly.

Did anyone else give up breastfeeding due to sore, cracked, bleeding nipples?

Spink · 11/07/2008 21:23

moosemama don't know about preggy brain, I've been like that since being preg with ds, he's now 16 mo!! eek - do you think it gets worse with subsequent pgs?? I'll be forgetting where I live soon

is there anywhere not online where can I get my hands on the elixir? trying to curb internet shopping...
(see you on ebay trying to buy 2nd hand Is Ol)

mel2005 · 11/07/2008 21:54

i do like the easywalker buggy there is a thread here about it
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/1216/564121
but as i have said on the other thread the person selling them on e-bay says the seats are from 6months, i do like to be able to attach car seats but that might just be a pain with two car seats. i do like the double carrycot on the mountain buggy for twins. i also have had the double before and currently have the single so i know what i am getting. the mountain buggies are on sale at pushchairs.co.uk at the moment. they are a great shop if you want to buy new, very helpful and quick to deliver.

talking about midwives visits, every baby i have had i they have reduced the amount of visits. i am finding it difficult getting an apointment because we only have a midwife for a couple of hours every two weeks. we are only a couple of miles from a city and it is a big village and the doctors serves the surrounding villages. the midwife said they just cant cope with the extra babies born. its worse than when i had my last baby two years ago when they regularly shut the ward and sent mothers in labour to a hospital 65 miles away. its the last thing you want to be worrying about when you are in labour.
i am thinking about labour now to be prepared as it will probably be alot earlier for me (and poor). to be honest i am worrying as there is so much that can go wrong. it is certainly going to be a stressful pregnancy. my aim is to be ready by the end of october.

i have already bought.
baby scales(sale bargain)
steriliser(sale bargain)
bottles (sale bargain)
two matching as new mamas and papas moses baskets and stands(e-bay bargain - will buy new matresses)
fisherprice baby swing (new bargain at £35-they usually are £100)
0-6m lambskin footmuffs (e-bay bargain - i aready have the big versions)
MB twin carrycot (it was great bargain from e-bay)
maxi-cosi car seat base (because it was £30 off in john lewis and i need to try it out in the cars we are looking at)

mel2005 · 11/07/2008 22:01

still need to buy
new car with 6 seats
MB double buggy
two maxi-cosi car seats
one maxi cosi car seat base
fisherprice swing or alternative for second baby
four baby bouncers (two for unstairs feeds and two for downstairs)
two baby bath seats
OH AND......
five million nappies
200,000litres of formula
(heeeeeeheeeeee)

later i will need to buy
two cots
two bumbos
two jumperoos
etc

these babies are going to cost a fortune!!

mel2005 · 11/07/2008 22:06

i wonder how many baby grows i should buy?, i was tempted with the lovely ones on sale in blooming marvellous but couldnt decide how many i would need. 6 each?. we dont have a tumble dryer (but i might be adding it onto my list) i dry everything in the winter infront of the logburner (as we rarely need to have the radiators on) i am not sure 6 will be enough. i have no plans to dress them in propper clothes in the first couple of months as i will spend my whole life changing and washing little mini jeans.

scared1976 · 11/07/2008 22:15

wow mel - i hope you have a big house for all that stuff! goodness me!

it's the weekend - great news isnt it! im planning on some trouser shopping tomorrow as the elastic bands are now stretched to the max....

so...I am 14 weeks and this is my first. Im short and normally a size 8, but my bump is MASSIVE. REally noticeable. Is this normal? I thought maybe it is cause Im only just pushing 5 foot. Please someone reassure me that Im not going to keep expanding at this rate!

XXXXX

LenniEd · 11/07/2008 22:16

Wow Mel! I think you should become a personal shopper once you have some time on your hands after the twins have arrived.

Does anyone here have any experience of the co-sleeper cots? Am thinking getting one of those instead of an Amby but am wondering if they are a bit of a pain being attached to your bed.

LenniEd · 11/07/2008 22:18

Yep - normal. And depends on the 'expanding at this rate' part. Some people get big bumps quickly - others don't. Plus you will find you 'grow' at different rates at different times.

LenniEd · 11/07/2008 22:20

Sorry - that was addressed to Scared BTW Scared* - are you getting over being scared now?

scared1976 · 11/07/2008 22:22

thanks for asking lenni yes i really am getting over it now. i have had 3 (!) scans already, so have had plenty of reassurance! And being the size of a small country does at least help me feel very pregnant

:-)

enjoy the lie ins (and least the ones of you waiting for no 1 to arrive!)

x

mel2005 · 11/07/2008 22:26

lenni, i did think about this one
cgi.ebay.co.uk/Arms-Reach-Co-Sleeper-Bedside-Cot-5-uses-in-all_W0QQitemZ260261614078QQihZ016QQcatego ryZ2985QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
it looks great but after reading the books about twins i have decided to put them in their room in moses baskets from the start as i will not be breastfeeding this time.
it would have been fantastic last time around as i ended up feeding upto 4 times a night as my little girl was tiny. she slept in our bed for 14m. i had a crib then a cot by the bed but she wouldnt sleep in one. i think she would have slept in the co-sleeper.

rrrayray · 11/07/2008 22:46
