scared and periwink... too bad with your experiences. i would snap. call the BBC or something. isn't there some segment or show about exposing bad business' and services?

i've just found out some other great news for me though. talking to my midwife i informed her that my BC medical insurance wouldn't come into effect till september and therefore would need to pay for tests and visits, (as i was told by medical services). however, i don't because it is common practice to back bill cases like mine in that i am a resident although i moved away for a few years and still have my BC medical card. very happy with that. wasn't looking forward to the expense. i love Canada!

elkiedee · 27/06/2008 23:38

That's great news chefswife. Canada sounds like it's a lot better than the US on that sort of thing. I have a friend who I describe as born again Canadian - she's from the US but moved to Montreal more than 30 years ago and identifies herself as Canadian.

OOOH...after all my moaning I did just have a look at St Marys birthing centre and it does sound very nice. Does anyone know, is a birthing centre just for people who dont have pain relief? Id like to believe Im one of those people, but as this is my first Im not daft enough to say I wont get 5 mins in and start demanding drugs!!

Hope you all had a nice Friday evening. Am so looking forward to my lie in tomorrow!!

tinkisexcited · 28/06/2008 09:04

morning i am 11 wks
and off to get my hair done
scared i was transferred to my local birthing centre from hospital. you can only have gas and air @ birthing centres. not epidural etc so need to have a straight forward birth with no complications.
i was all set with dd1 for a birth @ birthing centre they were monitoring me babys heartbeat was dropping so had to be transffered to hospital by ambulance

LenniEd · 28/06/2008 13:29

elkiedee - I seem to remember you saying that your sickness started at 12 weeks last time. Had you been nauseous at all beforehand? I have been nauseous since about 5 weeks but haven't been sick, and although I am 12wks next week I am now wretching a lot and having to strongly resist being ill. Just wondering if this is just normal morning sickness or something else.

fymandbean · 28/06/2008 14:36

elkiedee - funnily enough my mum said something similar about no January babies in the family!

PS do you think we can get Charlotte Church on our thread??? perhaps she's already here!! I found out I had been talking on MN with Catlin Moran a couple of months ago!

elkiedee · 28/06/2008 15:05

Lenni, I was sick the first time at 10 weeks last time (by LMP). Yes, I had felt sick beforehand. Unfortunately, I didn't just have morning sickness until 16 weeks or whatever it was meant to be, I carried on being sick 2 or 3 times a week right up to the end. I had heartburn and acid indigestion and sometimes thought that half my throat was coming up, especially if I hadn't felt like eating much beforehand.

fmy, one of the April 2007 mums went to a party where CC turned up with other half and baby a few months ago. Apparently they had the same buggy as her!

Any of the other second timers worrying about double buggies? I went to an NCT sale this morning so was looking at families with more than one child. They all look like such monstrous contraptions!

mel2005 · 28/06/2008 15:21

i saw charlotte chirch on JR last night and she looked fab. OH looked at my huge bump and then at her non-bump and just laughed. i am already the size of a 20 week single pregnancy and i will be the same size as a full term single preganacy at around 28 weeks according to the books. term for twins is 37weeks most books say so that will be 20th dec. i hope you ladies dont mind me staying here though as i am hoping to keep hold of them as long as possible and you are all lovely.

i am already worrying like mad but at least i can feel them moving/kicking. i cant find enought stats about their survival rates after 12 weeks, so i cant prepare myself. i am terrified of them being really early, i have had pre-eclampsia before with my first and now i am at greater risk with twins and i am not huge so i am worried they will not have enough room (another reason for prem babies). i am seeing the consultant on tuesday so i will make a list of questions for him/her. i am a great planner and i like to be prepared for the good and bad, i hate not knowing/not being in control.

good luck to all the ladies having scans this week.

mel2005 · 28/06/2008 16:00

elkiedee, i have had loads of doubles as my first two were under 16m apart.

the best one i had was the mountain buggy double urban, i do go off-road alot inc on the beach and the other buggies i had just were no good. i sold mine last summer and i am looking to buy one again at the moment for the twins. they can take one/two or a double carrycot and one or two kiddyboards. its not much wider than my single mountain buggy urban. i like having the four wheels as its more stable than the three wheeled buggies.

the phil and ted is ok, i have had several versions over the years but my second hated being underneath as a baby so i sold it but bought one later on when she was older. swapping kids around when the bigger one wanted to get out was a pain and the back seat wasnt big enough for a big child. my SIL has had one for 4years and loves it for her two boys.

the jane powertwin was heavy and tipped easily. the m&p double was bad, i only used it a couple of times.

the ABC buggy with toddler seat is fantastic if you have an older toddler who doesnt need s good nap just a secure seat. my little boy loved being up above the hood and it was really stable.

the easylife twins or singles with a toddler seat are really heavy and trap your fingers when folding.

i havent had one myself but i know people with mothercare urban detors who cant fold them and they are heavy.
some people love the maclaren twins but they are not suitable for where i go walking.

LenniEd · 28/06/2008 19:48

TBH I'm not going to bother with a double buggy. DD is walking very well now and we rarely use the buggy unless we are away on holiday - she naps in it at home but I'm fairly certain she will have dropped her daytime naps by the time the baby arrives as she doesn't nap everyday now. Plus where we live is very hilly and most of the nearby roads are stoney tracks - even our much loved mountain buggy struggles sometimes on the uneven surfaces so a double buggy will probably end up being a white elephant. We have tended to carry DD everywhere and have a good array of baby carriers so if we really need to put her in the buggy I'll carry the new baby and push DD. By the time the new baby is getting cumbersome to carry DD will have started pre-school how time flies!

A list of questions for the consultant is a really good idea Mel - you could also ask to be put in touch with other families with twins so that you can build up a bit of a support network before they arrive. There is a twins and multiples group in my area that advertise a lot through NCT and other toddler groups so I would imagine you would find something similar in your area. It might also be worth looking into having an additional birth partner available for during or after the birth so that there is someone to help look after the babies and someone to look after you. If you are the planning type you might want to sort out some help at home for when the twins arrive too so that you get enough rest and time to recover.

LenniEd · 28/06/2008 19:50

elkiedee I think this might be developing into something similar. I am feeling worse by the day and in my last pg was pretty much over the morning sickness by now. Been sick this evening and my insides are churning. I'm hoping it is just a bug, don't want it to be pregnancy related.

tinkisbig · 28/06/2008 21:49

we are going to get a quinny buzz for the new baby and a buggy board for dd1, she will be nearly 3 and a half when new baby is here
thought quinny buzz really good as you can buy an attatchment for frame to sit maxi cosi car seat on, hate carrying infant carries far too heavy !!

mel2005 · 28/06/2008 23:40

lennied, there is one near me i found it on the internet and i have the MWs number, luckily its on a day when my two monsters will be at nursery.
to be honest, the thing i hate about having a new baby in the house is the constant stream of visitors, people who just turn up uninvited and make huge damands on my time. i would rather i was left to get on with it. i am excellent at planning and orgainising my time and it does bug me when it is constantly disrupted by relatives (mainly inlaws) who are only thinking about themselves and expect to be waited on.
i dont have anybody except my husband who would be any great help to me (and he does work long hours).
i might get a cleaner though when the building work has finished.

elkiedee · 29/06/2008 09:35

Mel, think you should get your husband to talk to your inlaws and ask them to come round at a time when he's there, and he can wait on them or point out that they could get themselves and you drinks and snacks.

missjackson · 29/06/2008 12:14

Scan tomorrow -- after being super cool about the whole thing especially during falling-off-a-horse episode, I am suddenly really excited/ nervous.... will just be so great to see... A BABY!

How full a bladder is a 'full bladder'? Is 500mls of water in the waiting room enough? Don't want to be in agony!

missjackson · 29/06/2008 13:08

Also, how is it possible that my tummy is HUGE and flabby (all the biscuits I fear) and yet I've lost half a kilo without being sick once? I've been eating lots more than usual, and have had zero exercise since falling off the horse last weekend, so it doesn't make sense to me. I certainly look fatter.

mel2005 · 29/06/2008 13:42

ohhhhh missjackson, i hope you only have one!!!! not got any movement in your belly yet??? i am HUGE for 12 weeks.

also i didnt drink any extra water as i forgot, i was so worried as i had had a bleed a few days before, i had convinced myself that it might be a missed mc. she didnt say anything. mind you i probably didnt need any extra fluid in my belly as i have two sacs/babies. take some water in with you and see what the waiting is like. in previous pregnancies i have been kept waiting over an hour but this time it was about 10mins.

good luck

elkiedee, i have decided to be really firm this time around, they think i am rude asking them to call before visiting but i think its rude to just turn up. they are not really close as a family - i think its a posession thing. i would like them to focus on my two eldest when they visit after the twins are born and i know it will be hard for them but the elder children will be really put out if their grandparents push them aside for the babies and they did do that before. i will have to find a tactful way to explain that to them and to say that they can make their own drinks. its harder as we have a gas kettle and some people who dont have a gas hob end up with the light going out (luckily it turms the gas off if it goes out as a safety feature). if i know they are comming i can prepare things for them when i get a few minutes spare. i dont want to stop them visiting as it will be exciting for them as well, i just want it in moderation and with some notice so i can plan around their visits. i hate breastfeeding when FIL or my dad are visiting as they get really uncomfortable and it will be a nightmare with two to feed.

i will also have to do the no perfume talk to relatives again as they always forget.

HeathersMummy · 29/06/2008 15:22

hi missjackson, the letter I got for my scan appointment said to drink approx 1 pint of water in the hour preceding my scan appointment - so you've got it covered .
I had a scan at 12 weeks but the baby was too small to get all the appropriate head measurements, so I'm back on Friday for another one . I'll be 14 weeks to the day. I hope they'll be able to confirm my due date then, I had v irregular AF so they can't go by LMP.
Been feeling really bad the past couple of evenings and had terrible morning sickness. Here's hoping it passes soon, from memory it went away at 14 weeks with DD.
Anyway, enough ramblings, roll on Friday .
Good luck to everyone with scans this week too

LooseyC · 29/06/2008 15:56

Fourlittlefeet - hello, glad to hear I have a scan day buddy!

missjackson good luck with your scan tomorrow and for everyone else this week. Luckily for a nuchal scan here you don't have to drink any extra water, but don't know about yours - one slight bonus though for having to spend 180 quid round these parts!

Mel2005 - wow that you can feel your 2 moving already! That's so early - but nice I bet. Thanks for the double buggy info too, can't believe you've tried so many! DS will be 13m when this one comes so will def need some sort of huge contraption. And I can't even steer my single buggy, I am going to be a danger to others!

Teuch · 29/06/2008 16:33

Hello all, not been on for a while so I'm not even going to try and catch up!!

I've skimmed and nice to see most people doing well and coping with the symptoms/lack of symptoms!

I'm actually going to shuffle off, since they have changed my edd to end of December, and since DS was a month early this one may well come early too...

Apparently I have an 'oddly-shaped' uterus which is one possibility for his early arrival, and it will be monitored. Funnily, I worried about him coming early that whole pregnancy, yet it was such a shock when he was!!

I'll probably nosey back in here from time to time...good luck!

mel2005 · 29/06/2008 17:56

looseyc, its best to get as many reviews as you can about buggies as you can waste alot of money. have a good look at where you will be going with it and make sure you can push it.
my OH thinks i should be a buggy tester as i have had so many. i am always looking out for the perfect buggy as i do go out alot. i bought a few new ones and sold them on e-bay when i realised they were not for me. i now i tend to buy them secondhand off e-bay. i do my research and make sure i get a good deal so i can sell them back on for what i paid (sometimes more) if i dont like them.

most buggy covers come off and go in the washing machine and the frame can be dettoxed so i give them a good clean before i use them. i sometimes have gone to the shops to look at them and then go on e-bay and picked them up for a couple of hundred pounds cheaper in as new condition.

i think the key if you go for an inline buggy is to look at the weight at the front. my little boy is average weight for his age and he managed to tip the buggy (jane powertwin) into the road once by leaning that way while i was pushing. he was forever getting out of the straps no matter how tight they were and it made the buggy so unstable. he didnt manage to get out of the phil and teds straps as they have a body cushion part.
i prefered the side by side ones and some are only a few cm wider than the tandem size. i didnt have much trouble in the shops or around town. i think the MB urban is 73cm wide, my friends maclaren twin was 79cm wide and the m&p aira twin 83cm from what i remember they looked smaller but we were amazed they were not.
dont worry about using them in public, people tend to move out of the way quickly when they see you comming.

LooseyC · 29/06/2008 20:39

Hello - online avoiding the football at the moment!

Thanks mel2005, I force people off the road as it is so think I'm going to have to live with that! Was thinking a side by side one might be a nightmare but will certainly check those ones out... can't believe your inline one tipped over, you must have been mad at the designers! My ds wriggles enough at 6m so god knows what he is going to be like by the time I need to get one.

Spink · 29/06/2008 21:18

seeing as we're on buggies does anyone know if you can get the mountain buggy double on a bus??

tinkspregnantwithnumber2 · 29/06/2008 21:25
