Braxton Hicks are actual contractions, rather than pains (not necessarily un-painful though.) Imagine the 'That's all Folks' cartoon guy where the screen shrinks to a tiny circle - that's what a contraction feels like. You can feel the tiny hairs on your tummy standing on end and it feels like the bump's going to explode. Scientifically speaking, I think it's the horizontal muscles contracting rather than the vertical ones (which are all about expulsion. It's another antagonistic pair anyway, like your peristalsis.)

PetitFilou1 · 02/06/2008 16:55

Buckets Have been mulling over whether cyteen is actually having a real contraction (don't want to worry you though cyteen but maybe you have had a niggly one?) I think do ask your midwife. When I have BH I have to say they are uncomfortable but definitely not painful.

cyteen · 02/06/2008 17:07

Cheers girls, I will try and look into it. Annoyingly I'm between midwives at the moment as haven't registered with a GP in my new area yet - I'm doing that tomorrow morning so will try and get a soonest appt with the mw (I'm supposed to be having one this week anyway as am 28 weeks).

They're certainly not regular pains by any means - I'm hoping it's just indigestion! But have been having them on and off since this morning and only fell victim to gluttony at lunchtime...

TwilightSurfer · 02/06/2008 17:57

Cyteen, I've had some odd pains the past 24 hours too. Hip to hip then centered middle belly. The middle belly are kind of sharp, almost needle-like but very short. My baby's breech and facing forward so I'm guessing my pains have something to do with her body parts pushing against my body parts as I didn't have them at all with DD who rode in my belly correctly. I haven't phoned the doc because they are only intermittent. I'd say if the pains came and remained for a while you should phone someone.

warthog · 02/06/2008 18:09

cyteen, i'm also having wierd pains. and general aches. but the occasional pain too. i think you should monitor them and if they get worse, then call nhs direct.

mine feel like baby is in a strange position.

longwayfromhome · 02/06/2008 18:18

ALBS (and anyone else with swollen feet) on a purely practical note, I would add that my swollen feet always feel better in socks and shoes rather than sandals maybe kind of as there is less space for them to expand in to.

alittlebitshy · 02/06/2008 18:44

longway - yes i've just discovered that my trainers are a lot more comfy than my birkies. looking a bit odd in cropped trousers and trainers but hey ho (nb i have trainer socks not ankle socks - just felt the need to clarify that image ).

oopsacoconut · 02/06/2008 19:05

Hi All

Trying to catch up on today's posts - you all seem to have been busy posting.

We started our NCT classes today and they are not as scarey as we thought. We discovered out PCT has a 3 hour discharge policy - and as of July we can no longer be transferred to the local m/w unit post birth. I am now PETRIFIED of going home (which has always been my BIG fear)with a 3 hour old baby with no feeding established, baby needs to have fed once before discharge! Birth doesn't worry me - I know i have to do it and it will happen regardless of what i do, medically or naturally, and it will hurt. HELLLLPPPPP

Okay panic over i will just have to deal with it and see if we can arrange to stay longer to sucessfully establish feeding. Otherwise very informative about labour and birth - no videos, gorey pictures or horror stories. And now feel i can make an informed choice (and DH doesn't think i'm a hippie looney for wanting the natural, waterbith). next week covers the first 6 weeks at home.

Anyone planning on doing a bump cast?? The kids at work (i'm a nanny to 2 kids 8 and 4 and have been there for 6 years so they are just like my own) want to do one of me and today they did some belly painting (mine and theirs) and printed the paintings then stuck them on the kitchen wall.

PetitFilou1 · 02/06/2008 19:08

Birkenstocks are a bit flat - the support from shoes is better I think. I get shooting pains in my feet with sandals on once I get to waddling stage..

Cyteen let us know how you are won't you - I am feeling like worried mother hen now!

oopsacoconut · 02/06/2008 19:10

On a weight note - I have put on 6 lbs since my 16 week check - but at 16 weeks I was 31 lbs down on my pre preg weight so am still 25lbs lighter. [whispering] and i've gone down from a 16/18 to a 12 in maternity trousers and my 16's now fit over my bump as normal trousers. [sorrrrrry]

PetitFilou1 · 02/06/2008 19:14

Oops that's crappy. I suggest you have NCT breastfeeding line number/La Leche league number or similar to hand in case you have any problems. And there is always MN! I've managed b/f twice so will also try my best to help if you need it! You could also buy the NCT breastfeeding book - I didn't have it but people say it is useful. On the other hand you may just be a natural anyway. You'll be ok. And btw if they manage to discharge you in 3 hours I think your hospital must have more staff than everywhere else - took a whole day with me last time (plus I was there for the night before).

CaptainCaveman · 02/06/2008 19:26

It's official - I am ill. Been to gps today as have been awake since 4am with coughing fits that make me puke. Diagnosed with tracheitis and given a few days worth of antibiotics. As long as they stop this frigging cough I don't care! Got up at 4am to have a cup of tea, came back to bed and was still awake 30 mins later so I was up at 5.20am doing my ironing!! (didn't iron myself though).

Praying I get some sleep tonight. I don't seem to have trouble falling asleep - it's staying asleep.

poor poor poor poor old CC, feeling v sorry for myself but still managed to stay at work (nut case)

TwilightSurfer · 02/06/2008 19:33

Captain so so so sorry. Antibiotics should help. I was just about to post you a note. I've created a thread regarding our breech situation. Here it is if you'd like to see what others say.

Again, very very very sorry. {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}

OP posts:
alittlebitshy · 02/06/2008 19:53

poor CC. Hoping to meds kick in soon. Can't believe you ironed while ill though . is that a symptom of trachiwotsit do you think ? ??

readyforbed · 02/06/2008 20:00

Blimey, Dizzy was right, this is a busy thread!

Just put the boys to bed after the joys of an inset day - why do they always do this straight after a half term/holiday? Now I am completely thrown by the fact that it is Tuesday tomorrow and I have to start getting all the school stuff ready that was sent home before half term... ah well.

Miamla, I was very small with DS1 (to the point that I had a scan at 35 wks cos the midwife was worried) I reckon I have the same size bump now at 28 wks as I did at 40 with DS1 - - just a small baby and very good stomache muscles in those days .

VG - liking the idea of the need for a massage anyway - as DH is the one that was thinking about it he can definitely take on that duty!

CC - sorry to hear you aren't well -but how can you even think about ironing? I use every excuse I can (generally being too tired (ok lazy)) when I am fit & well...

I am having lots of death dreams at the moment - is that normal?

TwilightSurfer · 02/06/2008 20:06

Death dreams are a sign of anxiety over the birth and life change thereafter....completely normal.

OP posts:
miamla · 02/06/2008 20:06

CC from the sounds of it you have every right to feel sorry for yourself! you sit yourself down and have a nice little moan at us

albs are we finally on here at the same time?! i seem to keep missing you! how are you fixed for this sunday? fancy doing the hospital tour?

in my book, ironing is always a sign of madness!

cyteen · 02/06/2008 20:40

Aww, hugs for the Captain (((CC))) That sounds right nasty, make sure you get properly looked after (and put the iron down, woman!)

oops that's really pretty lame of your PCT, I can't believe they manage to make such a restrictive policy work every time. No transfer to the mw centre BUT you must be out in 3 hours = lots of stressed new parents and overworked staff, surely? Hopefully there will be some wiggle room in there...

TS that's interesting about your pains (commiserations btw) as it sounds very similar to what I've been having today. At times there has been a very odd sensation that I can only describe as like the baby's foot dragging across the front of my tummy, so perhaps the little tinker is breech and trying to get comfy Also, there's been lots of pressure on my bladder, quite uncomfortable at times. It certainly feels like there's no room in there - bump has been drum-tight all day - so maybe it's a bit of a growth spurt combined with bad positioning. He's been quite sedate in terms of movement - did you say your LO tends to be quiet when they're growing?

Anyway, thanks for your concern ladies I feel all warm and looked-after. Am going to register with the docs tomorrow morning, so will press for a mw appt - I might play up the pain a bit, see if I can get seen quicker In the meantime, it's an early night for me!

TwilightSurfer · 02/06/2008 20:51

Yes, Cyteen. When I feel like I'm growing baby seems to sit quietly for a while. As a matter of fact today baby's been more active than the past two...the past two have been UNCOMFORTABLE bellywise. My breech kick sensations are mostly low like between the hips and then her feet are up by her head kicking me just below my right lowest rib. Her hands are most active and move back and forth across my lower belly, even punching at my ..the exit. I really thing the pin sticking sensation is her trying to move and not anything bad.

TwilightSurfer · 02/06/2008 20:59

VG...isn't it your son that was just diag with autism?? Here's a link I just crossed over.

OP posts:
libbyssister · 02/06/2008 23:33

Hello all. Feeling very unprepared. No hospital bag packed, no clothes sorted out, no moses basket or new pram. But I'm only 28 weeks, there's plenty of time. Didn't get anyting packed until 36 weeks last time and it still sat there until I was 41+10!

More pressing... haven't got our holiday stuff sorted yet (haven't done the travel insurance argh!) and we fly out in 12 days time! Need to stop pottering round the garden and doing the washing up and write some lists instead!

Buckets · 03/06/2008 08:27

TS, that's me with the Aspie boy , thanks for the link. I'm definitely requesting a referral to a nutritionist at our next 'team mtg' because of his guts. I'd be happy with just an improvement there but yes, there is the theory that certain foods cause build-ups of opiates in sensitive people which might affect the brain, not just the gut. Will be an interesting couple of years anyway, esp with pre-school etc. But in general, he's fairly normal anyway, just a bit eccentric and good at ignoring people, most wouldn't notice.

IlanaK · 03/06/2008 08:32

Hi all, I know I am terrible at keeping up with this thread. I am moving in 2 weeks, so that is my excuse! Actually, with spd getting worse, I can't sit at the computer for long.

Just wanted to update that I saw consultant yesterday and have a date for my c-section: 21st of July. So I have 7 weeks to go. Seems forever as each day is such a struggle physically with the spd. My boys are so bored as getting out and about with them is getting near impossible.

Anyway, hopefully I will catch up soon! Hope you are all well.

longwayfromhome · 03/06/2008 08:44

Anyone else with insomnia? It's 4.45am here and I have been awake for hours ...

VintageGardenia · 03/06/2008 09:03

Hi lwfh if you are still pacing the floorboards, I am here. Not insomnia cos it's nine o'c now in Ireland, but I've got the condition where you cast around for something to do other than the work you didn't do over the long weekend...
