Hi everyone,

Well, it's another sunny day in the South West, that makes at least 2 in a row !

I think this DC is back to back with me, scrunched up with feet and fists kicking the middle of my tummy - joyous!

Anyway... am bored bored bored with menu planning (don't mind the cooking, it is the thinking of what to cook) so am hoping that you guys might have some suggestions.

Stuff we have (too often) includes - meatballs, cauliflower cheese & bacon, noodles & crackers, butternut squash risotto, fishfingers, shephards pie. Have recently tried - tortillas, chicken curry etc with a small amount of success, but don't want to push it.

Problems - I have Jack Sprat and his wife - make lasagne, one eats the pasta, the other the mince bit... once likes broccoli, the other carrots. DS2 doesn't eat pasta (seriously, i have tried it in all forms to try to tempt him - no joy). DS 1 doesn't really like mince or soup. Can't get either of them to eat fresh tomatoes/cucumber etc

oh... but they do both like icecream, mayonnaie and philadelphia & marmite sandwiches .

Any kid friendly (but also adult edible) ideas?

alittlebitshy · 06/06/2008 13:44

cyteen I think i love you (lol). You've made me feel a lot better about dd. It's nice to find someone who was a bit ticcy as a child (like me) who is normal now!! And yes it's the mum who notices isn't it? Dh isn't noticing or even concerned. I keep sobbing at him about it all....

Just had a nice sleep . I don't do that often though I think I ought to. My ironing is still tthee as a result, but the sleep was niiiiiiiice.

Shazza people think my dd is delightful too.... we get the horros at home!!! Better that way though that being the mum who claimes her child is perfect and the teacher is left going "er, no mrs ALBS - terror more like!!"

Still groggy after my nap so I'll grab some lunch and come back....

VintageGardenia · 06/06/2008 13:53

TS you need a flotation tank - I've been in one a few times (not while preg but think would be fab) and they are most relaxing and you do go weightless.

TwilightSurfer · 06/06/2008 13:57

VG LOVE IT (except for the total darkness part)!!!

Readyforbed....GOOD LUCK with the eating household eating issues. I've the same problem and it's just me, DD & DH. Goodness knows what it will be like with this fourth addition.

hmm - readyforbed food ideas. Iu sed to be a good menu planner, thern since being pg and feeling so isck i lost the skill. At the mo, cos I still feel ropey, we have a less varied diet than we used to.

How about soup and nice bread (can do/get thick filling soup)? oops just saw the soup comment. sorry.

Sausages go down well here... be it with mash and veg or in a casserole/stew.

I've made some veggie curries i've got recipes for off MN. SOme are v lovely and can be quite sweet.

Chilli and rice/ tortilla chips (though I guess that has the same issue of bolognese?!)

I'm dull aren't i??

Staple emergency here is pasta cos dd loves...... but as one of yours doesn't that won't help...

hmm... still thinking.

Do search the food and recipe archives on hee......

cyteen · 06/06/2008 15:22

ha ha albs, I'm flattered you think of me as normal

You'll all be pleased to hear the mood barometer has swung somewhat back the other way and I am now feeling pretty good about life. These whoremoans are killing me! Have never been so irrational (and that's saying something). Still, I found out I passed my nightmare uni assignment and that's given me a massive boost, plus the 'Subway sandwich, crisps and chocolate with a copy of Glamour magazine and my feet up' lunch helped a bit Going to go and search out some more useful books for my dissertation now.

readyforbed I'll try and have a think about menu ideas...brain is a wasteland this afternoon. How about fajitas? Fun to eat (use your hands, lots of mess and everyone getting stuff all over themselves) and as you put them together yourself you can concentrate on the bits you like (meat, peppers, salad, cheese etc.)

CaptainCaveman · 06/06/2008 15:39

Hey chicks, I think there is something in the water with all this feeling ill and achey etc. I'm still finding it hard work breathing due to cold - cough is definately on its way out.

No, I didn't set the alarm this morning - instead I was up at 2.30 unable to sleep due to said illness. Went downstairs so I could prop myself up on the settee, and ds appeared about 15 mins later. We both slept about 4 hours on there. Now feeling very tired this afternoon, however, have been washing and cleaning the windows etc in preparation for photos which the estate agent took. Also got a viewing tomorrow so fingers crossed that goes well.

VintageGardenia · 06/06/2008 16:03

Well done on your assignment cyteen.

Re. food I second the fajitas option, DS who eats hardly anything likes the do it yourself route of burritos etc.

Similar is a pizza option, if you can make a pizza dough and set out dishes of toppings, each person chooses what the want on their half of the pizza before you sling it in the oven. I find that works quite well.

DS also likes a sort of cold selection - I put crackers and cheese and fruit and ham and olives and bread and salami or whatever, and he takes bits and pieces of what he likes. You can bulk it up with soup, too. This is also my own favourite meal!

Otherwise fish pie is a great favourite here, as is chicken casserole, with loads of juicy gravy for mashed potato (bit wintry that though, maybe), bangers and mash, baked potatoes - again they can each choose what they like to go on top or inside - mincey ones might have a bit of chilli or bolognese you've frozen in convenient portions non-mincey might have grated cheese and butter and scallions or something.

(Having said that if I suggested to DP that we have baked potatoes with cheese for supper he would be a bit I think!)

I also, to my extreme embarrassment, got the Shrek cookbook. (Don't start on me, please!) It's been quite successful because DS flicks through it and picks a recipe and is much more interested in supper then. I've made molten lava soup (basically tomato soup with carrot, blended) and some revolting frogspawn jelly thing involving yellow jelly and passion fruit (it does look like frogspawn) - I don't usually go for making smiley faces out of the food and so on but DS does eat the things from that book.

In times of desperation I will still give DS who is 9 a boiled egg and dippers with a yoghurt and a piece of fruit.

VintageGardenia · 06/06/2008 16:06

I am also not above cheese on toast in desperation.

For added vitamins make a cheesy appley thing: in an ovenproof dish (little portion sized) put layers of cheese and sliced apple and put it in the oven and it goes all gooey and gorgeous and you spread it on toast, you can mix in mustard if you are a mustardy sort, oooh yummy my perfect snack.

VintageGardenia · 06/06/2008 16:08

Or oooooh if you have a nice butcher get some nice cocktail saussies and make a sort of sticky pourover sauce with honey, soy sauce and sesame oil. Slop it on and stick em in the oven and they come out fab - then let them eat the teeny sausages with corn on the cob forks.

God I really am slummy mummy.

miamla · 06/06/2008 16:23

Thanks for your lovely meassgaes but all is well in the world of miamla now... one of our suppliers turned up with THREE boxes of krispy kremes!! There's 12 (or maybe 15) in each box, 6 staff to eat them and I'm getting away with having "one for me and then one for baby"
I feel quite sick after three (so far!) but I'm no longer a krispy kreme virgin!!!!

alittlebitshy · 06/06/2008 17:43

ooh miamla yum!!!!!!

I'm going out tonight. Not totally looking fwd to it cos all i want to do at the moment is sleeeeeep.
It's a mum's night out with a bunch from dd's class (and it looks to be a record turn out of 12 out of 21 mums....). I have to go though cos I asked not to go to a fish restaurant (as was a suggestion) and opted for an Indian instead (the only other suggestion - i'm not brave enough to suggest something radical like pizza express )..... it would look baaaad if i pulled out wouldn't it lol? May see if i can escape early... but last time we didn't EAT til 10 - argh! Then we have a wedding tomorrow (The wedding where dd is NOT a bridesmaid). I'm going to be knackered aren't it?

Baby now has a painted room. Yay. Carpet goes in on weds, then we need to hit ikea for cupboards etc and then dh needs to get the cot down from the loft!!!!!

Buckets · 06/06/2008 19:52

Hi all, checking in from my mum's house tonight as we have run away (kinda.) Went to BIL's wedding today and had just awful time with DS, I saw none of the wedding, ate my dinner out on a patio by myself and took the kids home at 5.30 in tears. Well, actually we didn't get that far, I went to my mums and we're staying here the night instead. DH may or may not be getting a lift home with my folks who have just gone off to the evening bash. My mum says it's nothing to do with Aspergers, weddings are totally inappropriate places for all 3yr old boys, she may be right but it's the first time I've felt like a carer and it felt awful. Plus, knowing what everyone was thinking as we flapped about like totally ineffectual parents trying to stop him screaming about everything.
DD was very good and stunning in her bridesmaids dress, will post photos this w/e.
Anyway, the question is ... do I let DH got to Nottingham at the crack of dawn tomorrow for another wedding? He did have a crap day too and think he has paid for the hotel room but I have had a crap week being ill then this. He said he won't go if I don't want him to.

longwayfromhome · 06/06/2008 20:17

Sorry that you had such a tough time. Sounds really hard. Glad that you could recover a bit at your mum's. Looking forward to seeing some photos of your DD.

Wedding tomorrow - no advice, sorry, but I hope that you can have an OK day after a tough week, with some nice stuff in it, whether it is with or without your DH.

CaptainCaveman · 06/06/2008 20:35

Aw Buckets, sorry you had such a hard time at the wedding. Must have been tough on all of you, ds included. I'm afraid my knowledge of Aspergers is somewhat limited, however, a good friend of mine has a ds who is now 5 and was diagnosed around his 4th bday. In any new social situation he used to scream and cry - it totally flummoxed him and he didn't want to be there. She said it has got easier now she knows what might upset him but the tougher part is that others just don't understand (ie. she gets some funny looks from adults who should know better!). Please be kind to yourselves - you've not long had his diagnosis have you? (or am I getting confused again!?). It will get easier as you grow together though . .

sarahnh how is your dd doing? and you? I keep on trying to infect ds but he's proving immune so far, despite 4 definate exposures! (kissing, hugging and generally mauling his best friends when they've just come out in the spots!).

Am knackered after so much cleaning today! My right ribs hurt from Jerry's constant headbutting. Still feeling breathless too. Moan moan moan, thats all I seem to do!!

CaptainCaveman · 06/06/2008 20:38

ps buckets weather forecast for Nottingham tomorrow is shite - most likely to be peeing it down all day. Nice. I myself am escaping Nottingham for the day and going over to mum & dads in Stafford.

Oooh, forgot to say. Got the crib and stand, carseat and bouncer chair out of the loft this evening! Do you know, I think I might have accepted that this baby may well be here in 10 weeks time....

readyforbed · 06/06/2008 20:55

Buckets, don't know if it will make you feel any better, but I took my DSs (then 3 & 1) to my brother's wedding and had a very similar experience. I agree with your mum - unless they are very child oriented, that age is probably just too young (at least for boys) for the parents to have an easy time.

readyforbed · 06/06/2008 20:59

Thanks for all the recipe suggestions - will try some of them out, definitely will make a change!.
VG - the idea of a Shrek cookbook made me - recipes sound interesting... might have to look into that!
Also v much liking your cheese/apple idea (for me in particular).
