Thought I'd do this and post my last comments:

Hi all. Glad to hear more good scan news!

We had MIL visit this weekend and she is such hard work. She literally never lifted a finger and kept going back to bed every couple of hours. I've asked DP not to let her come again for a while as it's hard work waiting on someone.

We also finally put DS in his 'big boy bed'. Went quite well - he went to bed no problems, but he woke up at 2am crying as he'd got stuck under the duvet. He was then awake for a couple of hours so I'm feeling shattered today. Anyone of you with older children got any tips?

Slinkie we'll be near each other for mat leave won't we? We can have some fun together I'm sure.

Meglet I'm the same as you with the whole bf thing. I hated it last time and was relieved when I gave up. I keep veering to and fro with regards to trying it for this baby. I had such a happy time last time round, really enjoyed the whole experience, and am worried that attempting to bf will make the whole thing fraught.

a more natural cesarean i have a feeling some of you will think some of this is potty but i can assure you that there is reference based evidence to back up everything this handout says.

jearund · 23/05/2008 19:50

Kiskidee - nunca habria adevinado tu secreto!

Apologies to everyone else - I'll go back into English now!

Hey, I wanted to tell you all about my regular pregnancy-craving lunch. I have a roll with 2 slices of ham, a slice of cheese, 4 Cheddar Biscuits (inside), 6 grapes (halved - inside), 1 tangerine (in segments - inside) and a packet of crisps on the side. How's that for a sandwich! DH thinks I'm mad!

jearund · 23/05/2008 20:00

Becaroo She had a planned c-section so no pethadine but the pain killers would be in her system I guess. I don't know about his blood sugar. He has olive skin but his dad is Sicilian so we can't tell if he's jaundiced or not! What happened to you in the end, did he ever feed normally?

Kiskidee Let's hope so. No, she doesn't have a private room, the don't do them at our hospital for love nor money

Mustsleep I had constant backache throughout most of the last pregnancy. It hasn't really started yet this time, probably because I see a chiropracter once a month. My tip is you can buy a microwavable pad that you can fasten round your middle (with pregnancy extension) and put the pad on your back. Also warm baths work until you get out. Sitting on an exercise ball gave me relief for about half an hour. Otherwise it was lying flat. I got by with a combination of all the above!

Pidge · 23/05/2008 20:19

Hi all, gosh it's hard even catching up on just one day's postings!!

We had the second scan today - basically fine and no problems detected this time. But it was a bit of a weird experience. The first thing the sonographer said to us was "You were high risk from the 12 week scan". It's true that the nasal bone was absent, and the sonographer that time did discuss the option of further testing, but she never used the words 'high risk'. Whereas today that phrase was used repeatedly. Kind of surprised me, rather than worried me, as my risk for Downs was put at something like 1 in 200, which doesn't strike me as 'high'. But apparently that's enough to be classified high risk in NHS terms. I was also surprised to be told that most parents in this position opt for further testing, even though the risk of miscarrying a healthy baby would be higher or as high as the risk of a problem being detected. I'm not condemning anyone for going for testing in those circs, just a bit surprised at how standard it was and that it was us who seemed to be in the minority. Anyway, the sonographer was fine when we said we didn't want to take any further action.

And it was great to see the baby, kicking and wrigging around in there. We didn't find out the gender - we had two sonographers do two sets of measurements and both told us to look away at the critical moment, and both said that they knew what the gender was! Kind of weird to think that they know and we don't. Also I wondered if it was that obvious, does it mean it's a boy? Anyway, time will tell.

Now just happy to have the scan out of the way. And hopefully I won't need to go up to the hospital again at all.

Hope LittleConnie got on fine with her scan today.

hopefully · 23/05/2008 20:27

Potxola, glad you managed to get some stuff done!

Loving all the BF advice on here - I feel armed for almost any emergency, and it's nice to know I can come back if I manage to hit a problem you knowledgeable lot haven't already solved!

Off to my mum's for the weekend - camping in the garden as the house is full! Although we can upgrade to my mum and step dad's camper van if the weather's as abysmal as expected. Really wanted to pitch the tent though, as my cousin and his two little girls (3 and 4) are coming, and I think they'd love to play in the tent in the day time.

Anyway, have a lovely bank hols if I don't get on here, I look forward to having to read another 8 pages of posts on Tuesday!

jearund · 23/05/2008 20:56

We're going away tomorrow too - up to Scotland for a week to stay with the in-laws. So I may be a bit quiet on the posting front! We like going up as they basically look after DD and we get to have a good rest and go out and do stuff like the cinema/ shopping/ maybe a meal out. Plus it's free (apart from the petrol!).

splishsplosh · 23/05/2008 21:14

Glad to hear your scan went well Pidge

Hope everyone going away has lovely BH weekends

becaroo · 23/05/2008 21:23

Jearund, sadly my ds ended up back in hospital at 4 days old with an NG tube in He also had other health problems that werent picked up on which babdly affected his ability to feed.

The care he received was poor at best and negligent at worst - needless to say I am booked in at a different hospital this time! I would love a home birth but becasue of my health problems and ds problems after birth it seems unlikely.

Have a good break.

jearund · 23/05/2008 22:06

becaroo sorry to hear about your problems with DS at the beginning. Shocking that you were let down like that by the hospital. Let's hope you have a better experience at the other hospital this time.

kiskideesameanoldmother · 24/05/2008 01:10

jearund i have read that an epidural containing fentanyl can also affect the sucking reflex in some babies for a few days after birth. The epidural i received in hosp. also contained fentanyl. It turns out that fentanyl in an opiod, so it is a cousin to pethidine. (PS, not all epidurals contain fentanyl so if you are having a planned C/S it is a likely thing to ask the obstetrician about.)

i can a report of the study if you are interested.

When you visit your friend again, it will be a good idea to take along the handout on breast compression which is with my other links. (Yesterday pm I created a link to the old thread where i linked to that article.) iyswim.

I am not spanish but latinamerican. so it feels a bit odd to post on a Spanish mamas thread. I should start to lurk so maybe i would get a feel for it and start to post.

mamamufin · 24/05/2008 08:11

KiskideeI know that all the girls in mamis espan-olas would love to hear from you. we post about everything. We don't talk about the cities we come from, we just see it as a chance to talk to other mums who speak the same language and want their kids to be able to learn it too. They are all lovely and the ones in London meet often. I know there are mums from latinoamerica who go too.
I will be waiting for you.

potxola · 24/05/2008 12:49

I'm absolutely full of cold though
I've decided I'll do nesting in July, can't think about it yet!

biglips · 24/05/2008 17:08

mamamufin · 24/05/2008 17:52

Work has finished for today , just one more day tomorrow then hopefully I wont have to work another weekend for a long time.

Hope your getting looked after carrieon, hope you feel better soon.

Gosh Biglips you sound like me with your list. I love pampers and my nappy wrapper too and have started stocking up on the supplies. I need the wardrobe too.
I have completely gone nesting mad. I have been making hundreds of lists. I just cant help it.
Have a nice night x

potxola · 24/05/2008 18:03

Yes, we are all nesting. It is a weird feeling.
Mamamuffin I have just checked, it is ok in Argos is £39.99 plus P&P. So I got it cheaper since it was free delivery. Thanks.
A question you know I wanted to use the swadding blanket from Grobag to avoid Lorea waking up with the moro reflex. Do you thing Lorea can still use one if she sleeps in the SNUGGLENEST? HER ARMS WON'T BE ABOVE HER HEAD, BUT I SUPPOSE YOU CAN MAKE THE BACK POSITIONER WIDER so the whole body can be swaddle. do you know what I mean?

I've never used a nappy wrapper and I was a Huggies fan. I might try Boot's brand this time. The ones for my 3 yrd old are fab, much better than Pampers

mamamufin · 24/05/2008 19:17

I cant see why you cant still use the swaddling blanket as i would think loreas arms would be by her sides. However as a used to be co sleeper myself, I would worry about her overheating with two bodies near her. I would place the snugglenest inbetween yours and your dh pillows. Then you could probably still use your duvet, if this makes sense.
I too am having the sleeping arrangement debate. Do I go for a snugglenest myself or crib . I suppose the baby would end up in my bed anyway like last time. But what if ds feels pushed out or wants to join us. . Would there be enough room.

In the nursery at the moment I have a double bed. I am thinking that I would be daft to remove this as I think It would be really useful for me to escape into this room with baby if he is being really loud and unsettled. Dh works long hours and it would mean I could escape and feed lying down.

Ds has already said he wants to share a room with the baby and I am wondering wether to get a crib for a year then put them both in bunk beds.

meglet · 24/05/2008 19:39

eeewww. I have had a foul week. Had a rotten cold for a few days then when that seemed to be on the way out I started throwing up yesterday afternoon. I think I am on the mend now but am shattered. Can feel the baby moving lots, thank goodness!

Will be back later, am going to re-fuel with a cheese, tomato and salt 'n' vinegar sandwich!

lollipopmother · 24/05/2008 19:53

Meglet That sandwich just made me laugh! I've suddenly started needing a tuna and cheese sandwich recently, and also lots of peach yogurts!

digitalgirl · 24/05/2008 21:27

Is it nesting when you're preparing other bits of the house and not the nursery? Because that's what we're doing.

Spent this morning down at Furniture Village trying out beds. I can't believe how much we're going to spend on a new bed, we actually have to sign up to their finance plan. It's bloody comfy though, and guaranteed for 20 years so we won't be buying another one till we're in our 50's!

Then panicked about how much money we're spending on nesting (new bed, new car and garden landscaping) - none of which seems to be going on baby stuff. But we've saved up a huge chunk of money and it's all an investment, we won't have to spend this money next year.

Sassafrass · 24/05/2008 22:27

I'd define the nesting you get later on in pregnancy as an irrational strong urge to do something that has to do with getting ready for baby. Tidying out cupboards, sewing sheets (did that with dd1), manically decorating etc. I think pregnancy brings out nesting instincts through out though where you just want to make everything nice and homely. But look out for the crazed mania that might come over you at any point. I spent ages sewing little sheets for the cot in the last weeks before dd1's arrival. Had to get the seams just right, iron them, fold them up neatly and so on. And I'm normally not one for ironing and folding up neatly =)

potxola · 25/05/2008 10:12

mamamuffin Yes I can see what you mean, but because of my dh's demanding job, we have decided that he will sleep in another room when Lorea comes. So there will only be Lorea in the Snugglenest and me in the queen size bed ( the only piece of furniture i have that was a bit expensive, but worth it. I am pleased I will be able to use it now with her. I feel she will be safe there)

Anyway, the duvet, a high tog one for winter will be only covering me, so she will still need either a grobag sleeping bag or the swaddling blanket.
I have a lovely crib that my ds never managed to sleep in,(he prefered to sleep in the cotbed)I suppose when and if Lorea starts sleeping ok through the night like some babies do (that would be priceless) My dh can move back again and Lorea will go to the crib. Then some months later,we will have to buy ds a single bed and give the cotbed/toddler bed he has now to Lorea. It sounds complicated in a 2 bedroom house

bunkbeds You kids would love it!I think is a great idea and a brilliant solution to the lack of space problem.
Let me me know what you decide about the sleeping arrangements.
