I wonder how quickly we'll get through this thread?!?!?!?!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
splodgesmum · 15/05/2008 18:15

Hi guys, another busy day on the thread - sorry to hear of all those suffering aches and pains. I'm sure someone on here said that their SPD felt better once baby engaged, so I'm hoping that is the case for me too - I have the most excrutiating pain in my right buttock today, what's all that about?!

Finally managed to get Splodge to behave for his 3D scan today - the photos aren't brilliant as he still loves to hide in his placenta, but better than they were last week! I've put one on my profile if anyone's interested.

The sonographer is predicting 8lbs 7oz as birth weight if he goes to term - is that big? I was 8 lbs 9 and dh was 8lbs 13 so I was expecting him to be that size. I'm also 5' 9'' and not a small build (mellymell, you made me laugh about spending your life wanting to be small and delicate - can totally relate!) so hoping this means I won't have too much trouble birthing him!

Plus I have HUGE feet - size 8 and EEE width. In fact, ordered some new shoes this week, EEE width and they don't fit - anyone know anywhere I can get EEEE fit? Do they even make them?!! Anyone want to start a new fashion with me of not wearing shoes - doesn't look like I'll have any choice!

Rolf · 15/05/2008 18:38

Thanks Greenfairy . The 2 units are v close together and my main argument with them (if I have to have one at all) is that the baby and I will be no less safe in the MLU than we would be in the delivery suite. I'm prepared to compromise on other things (eg managed 3rd stage instead of leaving me alone; agreeing to transfer if clinically necessary - not just to comply with a protocol) but I can't see how their case will hold any water. I need to prepare myself to say to the consultant "thanks for the advice but if I chose to decline it and present myself in labour at the MLU, will the doors be barred to me?". I know I'm being all hormonal about it and that it doesn't matter where I deliver so long as the baby and I are safe - but I've just got all worked up about it and can't stop

Splodgesmum - the scan photo is lovely. he really looks like an individual, not just a generic baby doesn't he? I'd forgotten what a struggle you've had to get where you are now. I just can't imagine how delighted and excited you must be.

It's really funny reading about people wanting to be petite. I spent all my teenage years feeling like a giant troll next to my exquisitely beautiful and tiny cousins, and still, deep down, feel like a very large lumbering dollop. It wasn't until I went to university (in the south east, where they grow 'em bigger) that I realised that 5'4" with bony wrists doesn't make someone a heffalump .

Upsidedowncake · 15/05/2008 18:39

Splodge, I have size 8 wide too, but haven't even heard of EEEEE fit! Average birth weight for a boy at 40 weeks is 7 pounds 12 or something. Just looked on your profile and I have that maternity top too!

Greenfairy, your MW sounds wonderful and am keeping fingers crossed that she will be free.

Josey, very exciting. Would your DH be able to cancel his trip if you went into labour?

Rolf, they are letting me use MLU because could transfer easily to the other one, so hope you can too.

DQ, your due date is the same as mine, isn't it? Please don't pack your bag yet or I'll pressured to do mine

I don't know if any of you remember my friend in South Africa who discovered she was pregnant and her DH went off at the deep end. He'd been very supportive since last time up until yesterday, when she had her 12-week scan. Only:

  1. they'd miscalculated her dates so couldn't do Down's syndrome test; she's now 15 weeks
  2. they think she has placenta praevia
  3. they think it's a boy and her DH only wants a girl.

All these worries have sent her DH back into orbit and she was in bits on the phone today. It's very frustrating as I can't do anything to help except listen. Her bloods came back this morning and Down's isn't an issue, but I can't believe that her DH is being such a pig again.

splodgesmum · 15/05/2008 18:53

Rolf, thank you, yes, we have had a bit of a struggle to get our LO and I still can't believe I will meet him in just over a month.

Sorry to hear you're having to battle the hospital to have the birth you want - sometimes the 'doctor knows best' attitude can be sooo frustrating.

Oh, and you did make me laugh thinking that 5'4'' was giant - did you grow up in Lilliput! I went out with a boy at school once who was 5'4'' and he used to ask me to walk in the gutter so I didn't make him feel short! Needless to say the 'relationship' didn't last - and I'm married to a gorgeous 6 footer now!

UDC, I'm v upset you added an extra 'E' to my foot size ! Only FOUR Es - EEEE! Not that big then!

Can't believe the DH of your friend - he should be happy to have a healthy child and not obsess about whether it's a boy or a girl . He can't change the sex anyway so why bloody stress about it. Your poor friend, I'm not surprised she's struggling to cope with it - pg is stressful enough without having a pig of a dh to cope with too.

goingfor3 · 15/05/2008 19:01

UCD, your friends husband really isn't nce. I really hope he clams down again for your friends sake.

I can join the big feet club! Also size 8, never had my width measured but my Birkenstocks are too tight and I can only fit into Crocs!

splodgesmum · 15/05/2008 19:29

Ah, crocs, hadn't thought of those! I've never actually had my feet measured but can tell you that pretty much no size 8 shoe on the high street is wide enough!

Essie3 · 15/05/2008 20:01

Splodge I also have the same top - it must be the top for this season! I also have it in the beige. I think you look better in it than I do, though!
I did spy a breastfeeding vest top in H&M which was RED! But not in my size. I hope H&M start doing more colours - black is slimming, but makes me look washed out!

I don't have wide feet, but I do know about shoes... have you tried www.duoboots.com?
They do all sorts of wide fitting shoes and they're pretty!
The boots are not cheap (although there is a sale on now) but they're the only way I can get boots that don't look like wellies. There's about a 4 inch part of my calf which is model-like...

I'm worried about a big baby too - I'm 5'3 and (was) a size 8 although I do have expanding thighs - which might indicate nothing other than the fact that I eat too much ice cream and don't move enough...

PiggyPenguin · 15/05/2008 20:01

Hey everyone, its ages since I was last on as still feeling crappy but glad to see you have all been busy posting, its taken me ages to catch up from monday!

So no news from Makescakes yet then? Hopefully she has already had the baby and is just too loved up to get online.

Neenz, you sound as if you doing an amazing job - my ds also used to do amazing poos. He used to do it when I was breastfeeding and it would escape from his nappy and go all over me. Nice eh?

bitofadramaqueen · 15/05/2008 20:41

Evening all. Essie I bought a red stripey breastfeeding top in H&M yesterday, I wonder if it was the same one? It was the only bf top I saw in there. I did manage to pick up a couple of bright coloured tops in H&M yesterday - but I think the nice colours tend to go quickly, so its worth popping in regularly. They did have loads of black stuff that they've had for months.

I was really disappointed in topshop yesterday too - the store was full of bright clothes but the mat stuff all black and wintry looking.

Anyone tried the creme egg twisters yet? I had one last night - nice, but sickly I thought. Any other opinions.

Can you believe we're up to 859 posts already? I wonder if makecakes will make it back before we're on another thread!!!

OP posts:
Essie3 · 15/05/2008 21:02

Sounds like the one - the one I saw was red and stripey! Will track you down and steal it (if you're the same size as me - or even close).
Did they have breastfeeding tops in bright colours? No H&M near me, but DH has agreed to check from time to time (he is so brave, man in maternity section...but I think he also likes the peepholes in the tops ).
But you're right, DQ, maternity wear is all rather dreary. I think that's most (cheap) places unless you're shopping in Jojomaman etc.

I think I'd best avoid the creme egg twister, given my addiction to Flake 99 cones, and the size of my thighs...

PregnantPenguin · 15/05/2008 21:20

Upsidedown - Sorry to hear that your friends DH is being a complete ar5e again. Thank goodness she feels she's able to ring you this time. You must be a great friend for her to contact you each time. I find it hard to genuinely speak badly of my DH, I can only discuss any issues we have with one or two very close friends.

DramaQueen - I wasn't over impressed by the twister bar. It was ok, but I wouldn't rush out to get another.

Essie - LOL at peepholes, when I showed DH a breastfeeding bra his eyes nearly popped out of his head. He was v disappointed that it wasn't a peephole bra for his sole enjoyment.

Splodge - I'm 5'3" and when I was about 14 dated a 6'6"-er. People blatantly laughed at us in the street! Fond teenage memories tho, he was gorgeous, funny, charming......he came out in his early twenties.

bitofadramaqueen · 15/05/2008 23:24

It was only the red stripey one that I could find that was a bf top at all Essie, but a few other people mentioned that they've picked up a few bf tops before so I reckon the summery stuff has a quick turnover.

LOL PP and your teenage bf 'coming out'!!

Good morning ladies , I'm back

Had a great holiday - was so lovely being away from day to day things like cooking, washing etc... but it's back to reality now with a bump - lol.

Getting a few BH from time to time but nothing else to report from here.

There's no chance of me catching up and replying to you all so I'll just have a read and see if I've missed anything momentous.

How's Makecakes doing?

Hope you're all OK

debinaustria · 16/05/2008 07:49

Udcake - just read about your friends dh - can't believe he's gone off the deep end again, your poor friend.

Josey - anything happening?

sophiewd · 16/05/2008 08:07

Morning all - I too am of short atature, MW thinks this one is far bigger than DD who was 7.13.

Splodge - I have had a sharp pain in my right bittock for months now Physio reccommended that if you sit and put right, ankle on right knee (if that makes sense) then gently stretch the muscle out.

splodgesmum · 16/05/2008 08:50

Essie3, thanks for the link on shoes - I will measure my feet and have a browse today.

sophiewd, thanks for the stretch tip - do you mean right ankle on left knee? Don't know whether I can do that with SPD but I'll try!

DQ, yes had one of the creme egg bars yesterday - thought it was ok, but not as nice as an actual creme egg!

I was up early this morning and was just browsing around some of the other threads on MN, and a couple of others I've posted on, and was quite shocked by how vitriolic and unpleasant some of the posters can be . Has anyone else noticed this or am I being super-sensitive pg woman? Even in such innocuous subjects as children's names, some replies are so nasty! Is it just because people feel safe cos they're anonymous and so can say what they like?

No one behaves like that on this thread, thankfully, so why do they do it elsewhere?

PearTart · 16/05/2008 08:57

Morning All!

Group hug for this thread, I haven't been here long but have felt v welcome.

Thinking of all of you with BH/ pre-labour and aches and pains. (I leapt out of bed crying "AHHH NO it's happening again" and gave DH a bit of a shock- it was just cramp.)

Neenz- hope you are taking things easy and settling into some kind of routine.

Gemma- any news?

bitofadramaqueen · 16/05/2008 08:59

Morning all, nothing to report just keeping up witht he posts!

Deb - glad you have had a good holiday, we've not heard from makecakes yet!

OP posts:
sophiewd · 16/05/2008 09:40

Splodge she also said that if you can't do that then put out left leg straight and then put ankle up as high as you can, even a small stratch is better than none.

mellymell · 16/05/2008 09:49

Morning, especially to all those with cramp, BH, pre-labour aches and pains.

I had some really strong BH last night so felt very virtuous as I lay in bed breathing through them. Felt like such an earth mother - my yoga classes and hypnobirthing tapes must be working!

Nothing much to report this morning - it appears that most people do their chatting towards the end of the day when I have my hands full with rampant toddler. As I'm usually away at work all day, this week has been quite an adjustment for him having me around. Some of the tantrums have been really spectacular - my nanny is wide eyed with amazement because he never behaves like this with her - so glad I am such a positive influence!

Right - off to do my mega food order for cooking marathon with my mother to fill the freezer. Have just been informed that onions and tomatos are out for breast feeding mothers - makes babies very windy - so have had to scrap original menus and start again.

splodgesmum · 16/05/2008 09:53

sophie, thank you, that does help actually!

mellymell, sorry to hear your toddler is playing up - interested to hear what you say about tomatoes and onions, our NCT teacher said nothing off the menu except shark! Not something I eat often I have to say!

Upsidedowncake · 16/05/2008 09:59

Rats. That rules out me being all hormonal and demanding exotic fish. 'Get me a shark sandwich and make it snappy!'

Sorry.

Spoke to friend in SA again last nighyt, and her DH has calmed down. Have suggested she talk to him about the pattern as it's not fair on her at all. She has asked me to be godmummy so am chuffed to bits!

Debs, swelcome back.

Sorry for those of you with aches and pains - particularly those of you contorting yourselves with ankles on knees and so on!

Think most people or MN are pretty friendly - but there are certain topics that get people going ...

looneytune · 16/05/2008 10:00

I'm trying VERY hard to keep up with this thread but it's just sooooooo active!!!

Anyway, I've had to close today due to having a bug so at least I have some time to try and catch up.

I'm getting worried about all this talk of afterpains - I know I was very sore in the fanjo area (dh LOVES this name, we were laughing about this last night ) for a while but don't remember after pains. Does remind me to get some arnica though!

greenfairy - pleased your appointment went well and great stuff about student who used to be a doula!! BONUS eh! I didn't have my appointment in the end. She couldn't make the time in the end so asked if could come this morning so we said 9.45am but she's just phoned again to apologise but been up all night with home birth and asked if she can come this afternoon so she's going to call/text when ready to come over (as I said I happen to be in today now). At least I can talk to her about last nights birth She did say they transferred to hospital and I'd like to ask what the reasons were.

mellymell - my god, that's big! My ds was born at 41 weeks and was only 6lb 9oz.

dylansmum - lol at your dream, fingers crossed then

Paro - presumming you're breach then? I was but he's turned so fingers crossed yours does too (can't remember when you're due). I think what helped me was leaning over gym ball (like birthing ball) and crawling about on all fours. Good luck Thanks for birth plan link - will have a look at that later.

needahand - hello Didn't know that about the arnica 2 weeks before - best get to the shops then! Think I'll buy some lavender oil/tea tree oil too - which works best?

ktpie - glad you had a good holiday

Lorettah - very at your 9 months off. I'm having 12 weeks in total, starting 2 weeks before I'm due. I'll go straight back to looking after 3 under 19 months and a 5 year old (I'm a childminder in case you didn't know )

Sorry I have to go now so only very quickly skimmed through all other posts. Hope everyone else is ok and sorry if I missed anything important.

Hopefully be back later

needahand · 16/05/2008 10:02

Morning all

I thought I would just sign in for today. Might go shopping later on today. All these talks about H&Ms makes me envious. I haven't been in town for ages. I too can only wear crocs, bikenstokes or ugg type of boots.

U/cake sorry for your friend. I hope her DP comes round, he sound like a man in a million doesn't he?

still sending loads of positive vibes to makescake.

needahand · 16/05/2008 10:05

looney I used to put both the tea trea and lavender oil in bath at the same time. And at least it covers the teatrea smell a bit.
