Dramaqueen thanks for the link I will definitely look into that after the holiday. Anything that might help. I will also start on those raspberry leaf tablets.

Sybil I bought some cheap black towels from Asda. They are quite glamourous as they have a bit of sparkle on them but were dead cheap

GF wow that is a great tip. I will definitely make enquiries about egyptian cotton sheets!

Hoggle hello! Long time no see.

Welcome Essie

nettiehay · 30/04/2008 14:24

welcome Essie

I am ashamed to admit that the towels I have packed are towels that DP keeps bringing home from the gym... no matter how many I give to him to take back, he comes home with more! So I figured it doesn't matter if they get all horrible - but they are white so will show up anything... maybe I need to rethink that decision...

I've also put on a full 2 stone, but I keep getting told you can't tell I am pregnant from the back... so god knows where it has all gone... my boobs?? M/w said yesterday that my bump is all baby, very little fluid and I am still fitting into heaps of pre-pregnancy tops (not trousers though ) so I don't quite know how I've put so much weight on...

debinaustria · 30/04/2008 14:31

Hi everyone, thanks for your comments on the names, we're hoping to get back to the UK before the boys go back to school and I've told dh that means we'll have to decide on this baby's name as we need to put the names on the Ryanair booking form.Bit weird booking flights for a baby who isn't here yet!!

OK, here goes

Makecakes - yes you can do the whole sound of Music tour in Salzburg, either on your own or on an organised bus trip, you can even have dinner there and be "entertained" with renditions of Sound of Music favourites!!
Sorry to hear you're feeling sad, I read that booking a holiday always helps

Aberdeen - When we moved here ds1 was 5 and ds2 was 3 and they learnt to ski, but with ds2 it was hard going, I would say at least 4 , but it depends very much on the child - are they "indoor" or "outdoor" children? IYKWIM

Rolf - I would think that if your dd got chicken pox know it would be good timing. Have you had it? When I was teaching and pregnant with ds2 it was going around the school , I haven't had it, but got myself checked at the Drs and I am immune.
Can you get a cheapie double buggy from Ebay
When I'm in labour I'll remember that image of a "doula"

Paro - how was the swimming? What do you do tomorrow for May day? Here they erect a huge pole with a Christmas tree on the top, with ribbons on etc... and then there's probably beer, music and sausages!! Haven't been to it before.

DLM - sorry to hear you're not so good, I think I prefer Myles.

Needahand - I am ashamed to tell you that I slept right through again, but I didn't go to bed until midnight so I was shattered. You were right to be cross with your dh, there's no way I could do all that travelling especially after a day at work. Hope you have a lovely time when you get there.

Sybil - why don't you use some of your oldest towels then treat yourself to some nice new fluffy ones.

PP - Thanks for the comment about my boys, but no thanks for reminding me I'll be missing birth announcements We'll have to compile some sort of ongoing list which appears on every page and is updated daily.

whinegums · 30/04/2008 14:34

Hello all, and welcome Essie.

I'm quite busy at work at the moment, mat leave starts 3 weeks tomorrow, and no one has even mentioned any cover or anything! Also have an event to sort out for the day before I leave, and our new website to launch. Oh well.

Towels - lots of cheap dark ones about as others have said, saw some in Tesco the other week as well.

I've been looking for suitable dark coloured nightwear for hospital, and failing miserably - even when looking in the men's section. I want a long dark lightweight dressing gown, cheap enough so I don't feel bad about chucking it afterwards. And why oh why are all the front opening nighties so grannyish and in sicky pastel colours! Grrr! Or made out of stuff that's so synthetic I'm worried I'll go up in flames if I turn around? Got a couple of cheapy dark strappy cotton chemise things, and then realised they will look really weird with nursing bras. But will I care at that point? I do have some dark pj bottoms, but I'd like a nightie in case they're too uncomfortable.

Anyway, any tips for this kind of thing gratefully received.

ErnestTheBavarian · 30/04/2008 14:50

Well hello from sunny Muenchen Hope yu like the new name.

I love my new house, tho am sure will love it that teeny bit more when it's not buried under wrapping paper and boxes. Have been unpacking non-stop and am quite bored, but had the morning 'off' to meet with prospective CM for ds3 and our new priest to get stuff organised for ds1, then back home again for the all important tv set up - we didn't even have German tv, but are now fully armed with English and German.

Now have to finish unpacking and sort out doctors & hospitals etc. Have visited 1 so far and it brought home to me - OMG I'm pregnant and in about 5 weeks, by hook or by crook, I'm going to have to get the blighter out . I've been so busy with the move the pg have been very much at the back of my mind. Last night I had nightmares.

No one's popped yet?

Deb, my vote goes for Aidan

can't possibly catch up - missed so much and I'll never unpack but wish you all well, and will keep up from now on. Honest.

mellymell · 30/04/2008 14:59

Ernest love the new name and glad to have you back in communications. Good luck finishing the move but make sure you get as much help as possible otherwise you'll knacker your back.

Hooray - have just been told that for the last few days in the office (grand total of 7), I can come in late and leave early. Due to a power cut in the area, none of the escalators working which is very tiring, there is no where for me to have a snooze during the day and pile on the commuting, I'm absolutely pooped by 6.30pm when I get home. Should have asked earlier for this dispensation, but I don't work for the most generous of firms.

Finish work at the end of next week, thank God. Only issue is that I am very much looking forward to maternity leave, but it does mean I have to start about the whole birth thing which I'm not looking forward to. Will stick my head back in the sand.

systemsaddict · 30/04/2008 15:04

double buggy: I have decided we will definitely need a Phil & Teds but dp disagrees - I am right but for domestic harmony we need to wait until it becomes absolutely clear we need one, then buy one on next day delivery! Just like the changing table last time which he insisted was an unnecessary luxury - till the baby came home that is!

makecakes I was induced with ds1, he was back to back and tilted too and there was nothing anywhere close to being favourable about my cervix, so it was far from ideal. While it was a long slow labour and a forceps delivery (which I think was unavoidable given the size and position of ds), we were both well looked after during the labour and basically fine (if knackered) afterwards. I think even if it had gone to a section I would have been OK with it as long as baby was fine, but there is no guarantee induction will inevitably end in a section. Having said that I will ask for monitoring rather than induction this time if I am only overdue, but if there is a clinical reason for an induction then that's a different matter.

DM+1 - you have my understanding sympathies - hope the pain settles down a bit with some rest. I am now reconciled to not doing anything active with ds and resting the max possible - he is watching far too much TV but it's only for a few weeks now and I figure getting a sibling will make it worth it! I like Myles, and Jackson. Would be wary of Jaxson - my real name is like a well-known English name but spelt slightly differently and it's been a pain correcting people my whole life!!

Glad my dp isn't the only one who is making no allowances for pregnancy. He has had a cold - sorry, 'flu' or 'an itis' (!) - and has been alternately demanding TlC and being completely snappy and grumpy. I find it very depressing because I 'should' be being looked after by this point - but there are clearly a lot of them out there like that! I think it's a bit threatening for him actually to realise I am about to have another baby so denial is at the forefront ...

systemsaddict · 30/04/2008 15:06

congrats on getting moved ernest (I am in awe!!) and welcome back!

needahand · 30/04/2008 15:07

Whinegums - my search of nighties didn't go better than yours, you may recall I had the choice between grannies ones or winnie the Pooh (at my age!). It took the winne the pooh one. I really hopes my HB goes well and no one ever gets to see it!!!

Ernest - glad the move went well and that you love your house. I hope you will get a bit of well deserved rest!

Debs - I am so jealous. A whole night of uniterrupted sleep. Bliss oh bliss

Nettie- I have put about 2 stones too and I know my tights are definitely fatter

IT IS MY LAST DAY AT WORK TOMORROW Hooray!!!

goingfor3 · 30/04/2008 15:08

Ernest great to hear you being so postive, I would be wingeing after such a huge move!!!!

DD2 was back to back and turned in labour. The contraction started one eveing but where painless and when I arrived at the hospital I was 2 - 3 cms dliated and she was back to back. The contractions stopped. At 8.30 in the morning my contractions started with a bang, dd had turned and was born at 11.06 am. So don't panic the back to back baies still have plenty of time to turn!

Josie57 · 30/04/2008 15:28

Whinegums - on the nightshirt front, have you thought about buying oversized mens shirts as you may get a better choice of dark colours, you could always couple these with leggings???? I know this isn't very glamorous but my pelvic floor was shot to pieces straight after the birth so I was really glad of my dark clothes

I keep looking at very pretty light coloured nightwear but have to remind myself that in reality I won't be able to wear this for the first few days anyway. Hopefully, none of us will be in hospital for too long so it won't matter what we wear.

PregnantPenguin · 30/04/2008 15:58

Welcome Essie - We share the same due date - and denial about becoming first time Mums!

Hello again Ernest - love the new name.

I was planning on using some old work shirts of DH's for nursing with shorts and a nursing bra/vest underneath. Is that niave or sensible...?

bitofadramaqueen · 30/04/2008 16:11

Hi everyone - I cant believe but I will actually have to buy something to wear for 'labouring' in. I dont have any big baggy t-shirts that I can fit in and I did a big clear out of DHs old clothes a while ago. Any old t-shirts that I could steal are quite thick and I hate being too hot at the best of time, giving birth in a very hot hospital room in a heavy tshirt would kill me.

So if anyone sees any lightweight cheap nightdresses/shirts that would fit a pregnant lady let me know.

Still feeling glum about my fat ankles. . Dont get me started on my thighs. They caught my eye when I was sat down the other day (when of course they are at their widest) and I thought from the waist down I must look obese! Glad its not just me though .

Hi, ernest welcome back! And welcome to essie too.

OP posts:
Rolf · 30/04/2008 16:13

I've bought some hideous nightshirts from Primark. One is pale blue with white polka dots. The other is pink floral. Lovely! I have a long cotton dressing gown from TK Maxx which is ok in itself although anything with a belt yanked around the "waist" (use that term loosely!) with milky boobs above and scary belly below is not going to look too good

Well done on your move Ernest . Nice to see you back.

Welcome Essie!

No idea how much weight I've put on but assume it's loads.

I've been induced twice and had relatively straightforward deliveries. No instruments anyway and "just" 2nd degree tearing. No further augmentation either, apart from the initial prostin and, with DD, an unnecesary ARM (about which I have posted in tedious detail).

Neenz - hope your appointmnt went well.

My FiL reminded me that even if the baby is exposed to chicken pox, she'll be immune for a good few months thank to my immunity (I had it as a child). So I'll just wait and see how DD is.

Feeling so excited today! This pregnancy has been so lovely .

goingfor3 · 30/04/2008 16:22

Rolf dd1 caught chicken pox when dd2 was 3 weeks old and dd2 then had it at 5 weeks. DD2 had a really mild case and I don't know if thats because she had some immunity from me.

Rolf · 30/04/2008 16:55

That's good to know G43. Was DD2 distressed by it? I'm not yet 35 weeks so there's a good chance that if DD does get it, it will be all over with before the baby comes.

PiggyPenguin · 30/04/2008 17:07

Thanks for all the ideas on towels - I will have to check out the local supermarkets and see what is about. The nightwear question has made me wonder, for people planning to have pools, what are you planning to wear in them? When I look for towels at supermarkets, I'll check out the nightwear situation and let you all know what is about.

Glad to see you back Ernest!

makecakesnotwar · 30/04/2008 17:14

Hi all-

and thanks for the encouragement about the induction. I have been taking the raspberry tea tablets and bouncing on the ball a great deal, and am now on to looking for a reflexologist who comes to the house (but first I have a pedicure tomorrow. Can't go into hospital with chipped polish)

I bought a bundle of labouring clothes on Ebay- two nightdresses (I HATE nightdresses)and a pair of black feeding pjs, which I hope will see me through the first few days DH suggested I treated myself to a set of feeding pjs, so I did buy those pastel ones...one of which has a lightweight dressing gown...not sure that they will do but I won't know until I get there. Hadn't thought that I might need dark clothes for during the day in the first couple of weeks...how long should I expect to bleed for????

Ernest- am so pleased all is well, if hectic. Keep us posted.

SPD people- send my love. Every day you think it can't get any worse, and then it does....

Debs- will check out dates with DH. Am warming up my vocal cords though and my vote is for Aidan- there's a nasty character on some TV show called Ethan....pregnant logic!

What else? Can no longer tell where legs end and feet start...none of my shoes fit. My clothes don't stay up (trousers) or down(tops) so I keep exposing my middle, which creeps me out as it's very hairy and has a big scar in the middle, like an x that has stretched out of shape (used to have a pierced belly button when I was a rebelious student). Have realised I must be leaking as have been getting yellow stains inside my bra- thought I was just sweaty so will have to dig out breast pads ....where will it all end?????

needahand · 30/04/2008 17:14

Ok it is tara for me for now. Bye bye ladies. Speak to you in two weeks. I hope I don't miss to much action (although I am sure I will). Keep well.

Josie57 · 30/04/2008 17:24

Makecakes - my SIL had an induction for her dc1 and had a straight forward no intervention 7 hour labour so not all inductions end up with lots of interventions.

As for the bleeding you can probably expect for bleed for a few weeks at least followed by a bit of spotting. It's only the first few days that are really heavy though. The other reason for dark clothes is to hide any wee leaks ( sorry if TMI!). I had felt like I had no control over my bladder for the first 12-24 hours after the birth, especially when jumping out of bed in the middle of the night because my ds1 was crying. I had to go to the midwife and ask for an emergency gown and a change of sheets . The worse thing is I didn't even really know it had happened until I felt my wet clothes . Fortunately it was nighttime so I didn't have an audience but it was all highly embarrassing.

Parofleurmapu · 30/04/2008 18:04

Afternoon all,

Swimming was good, i really love the relaxing effect of the water however it makes you tired after though!
PLus shopping prob didnt help, so i have been snoozing all pm!

Re may day debs, dont think they actually do any celebrations as such its more of a labour day ie everyone who works has the day off!!

Some villages towns have they local fiestas round this time like the Horse festival and the gofio(some kind of flour) festival Our main celebration here is 30 May which is canarias day and we dress in costume etc (Have put pics on my profile for you to see. me and DP in traditional costume)

On the nightie front i dont get a choice in what to wear, have to wear an awful blue nightie thing!!! with an open back bit like operation therate thingies!

Can wear own stuff after though so have black slouchy trousers and vest top which i hope will be ok.

Also re hospital bags we dont have to take any nappies, towels for washing or for us into hospital as they are all provided!!

Rolf · 30/04/2008 18:13

sybil - if I use a pool i'll prob wear a bra. i've looked at tankini tops and frankly i think i'd look no less scary/skanky in a bra

Parofleurmapu · 30/04/2008 18:25

Have also updated other pics too ro show 3d scan and baby room!

Hoggle · 30/04/2008 18:53

Rolf, I suspect we might be nightie buddies, I got 2 in Primark and one is a truly insipid blue and white horror, the other a grey jersey one. I am not looking forward to wearing either of them

thegreenfairy · 30/04/2008 19:03

sybil I am having a pool and not planning to wear anything - my view is, what's the point when your fanjo's on full display?

But, thanks to being brought up in a 'naked house' I'm blessed with not being body conscious when naked and I know this isn't the norm.

How about a tankini top if you want to remain modest?

If I have to transfer into hospital will probably stick with naked as long as I get my own room.
