Happy New Year everyone!

Following Katzguk's suggestion I've started up the new thread - hope no-one minds.

Well, I did absolutely nothing for New Year. I have the cold from hell so I was in bed by 9pm. I was very disappointed as we were supposed to be going to a party but I decided not to go as I wouldn't have enjoyed myself and then I'd have made dp miserable too. So, I celebrated by having a lemsip topup at 12 o'clock! (One for the books!) Hope you all had a nice time.

Have been reading your threads about what to buy and what not to buy. I started buying after Christmas as I want to start really enjoying this pregnancy now. Dp is incredibly worried that something will go wrong and we are tempting fate but I don't want to be walking on egg shells for the next 5 months .... yup 5 months already!!! Scary stuff!

Anyway, we have bought a Graco travel system as I have spent hours in the shops clipping and unclipping and puttin them up and down and I found Graco to be lightweight and really simple to use. Then I trawled the internet on boxing day and found that Toys'r'Us was doing some good deals.

Cot is going to be an Ikea special. They are so cheap, I just don't think you can argue and we are big fans of Ikea. However, if anyone has any experiences of this then let me know. We aren't bothering with the moses basket.

I've got a 2-way baby carrier from e-bay, which is still new apparently, although I haven't received it yet so I'll hold bck on judgement.

And then the mumsnet wanted and for sale boards are fantastic. I've got a bottle warmer and a travel cot through mumsnet. I'd reommend that anyone here use them.

There are three things which I need help with though:

  • steriliser; microwave or electric??? Any opinions?
  • breast pump; is there one which is comfortable and easy to use? I don't want to spend a fortune and then not be able to use it.
  • baby monitor; I definitely want one. Am planning on sitting in the garden over the summer, and baby might not want to be moved. Should I get a normal one? A digital one? Has anyone used an under mattress sensor type one? Need big help with this one.

Have bought myself some books on motherhood and new babies too. Am such a planner, I need to be having a good read now so I can put all the theory to practice in 5 months time!

Hope you are all well and not being sick any more! x

I am not sure I can put in exact words why we are so scared of boys... is probably the total lack of experience. However, most of the times we are around toddler boys they sem to have a really high level of energy! Also, the first thing everybody on our family said was : - oh well, you'll just have to get used to all the kicks and jumps, ...or, you know, he won't sleep as much as DD, etc.. Which doesn't help!
I am also not looking forward to be peed in the face !

Our DD is quite mellow, and can spend about an hour just hugging and kissing dadddy until they are both fully awake, so I think he was looking forward more of that.

DH is slowly getting used to the idea. BUt every now and then he mentions something like we'll never be able to use this dress again or, I won't have my second baby girl, etc...
Although it makes me a bit more nervous, in the end, I like the idea of a DS, and am excited. I think it makes it for a more exciting event. it will be a whole new adventure!!

MrsWednesday · 19/01/2005 15:04

I can understand what you mean Lua - if I'm honest, I feel a bit like that about girls, and I know my DH would definitely prefer another son. I suppose it's what you're used to more than anything.

Some little boys are full of energy, but some aren't - most of the children in the mother and toddler group I go to are boys and the range of personalities is enormous. My DS is one of the energetic ones but there are others who are more than happy to sit and draw instead of jump on the furniture, who sleep until 9am most mornings, and are generally very laid back.

I don't remember being peed in the face, but I definitely remember DS peeing into his own face, which made me laugh loads (serves him right for playing with his bits mid-wee!). I know this probably sounds strange to you, but I find little girls bits very 'rude' - I don't know why, because I do have them myself obviously, but at least with little boys it's all on the outside so it's easier to clean. Sorry, I am waffling on now.

You're right, it will be a whole new adventure...a brand-new person to get to know!

katzguk · 19/01/2005 15:25

have just emailed scraggy a picture of my huge boobs i mentioned earlier on in this thread her comment was quite simply OMG!!

LipstickMum · 19/01/2005 15:59

I know what you mean Mrs W, having to get into dd's 'crevices' when she has done something messy seems so intrusive

Thanks Lua for your input about the sex of the baby thing. Sorry I couldn't remember who it was who metioned it, but you know what it's like on this thread, it all moves so fast! Generally although I remember the info, I can never match it up to the right person

I've talked about it with dp, he is less bothered this time. Wont bore you with the details of the conversation, but what we decided was we would give serious thought to a name for a girl (which we have not done as yet). As we already have a boys name we both love, hopefully finding an equally cool girls name will help me relate to the possibility of the baby also being a girl. We then have 2 weeks to decide if we'll bother finding out or not! Simple !!

teabelly · 19/01/2005 16:00

Sorry got caught up with actual work there...better make sure that doesn't happen too often!

Lua - I haven't changed my diet at all, I have alot of fresh veggies normally and adore fruit (and prob have too much!), along with loads of bread, potatoes and pasta so the Atkins would definitely be a non starter for me even if I did eat meat/fish. But I also love cheese and would happily just have cheese and biscuits for every meal...not a skinny veggie here, he he he!

Mrw W with your researcher...dh just tuts when the post comes now and there's a survey in there somewhere, but I can't resist!

Lipstick - yes definitely find out. I'd thought that ds was a girl when I was carrying him, and when I was told at the scan that it was a boy (actually I didn't need to be told he'd made sure his tackle was on full display!) I'll admit to being fleetingly upset...not because I didn't want a boy just that I've always really wanted a girl iyswim. But it gave me loads of time to get used to the idea and I was so excited to be finally meeting him when he came I'd forgotton all about having been upset. This time we're definitely going to find out (so obviously it'll have it's legs crossed!) because of many reasons but one of those is that I want to be able to prepare ds by saying definitely sister or brother...apparently I had a real hard time accepting my sister as the bump had always been referred to as 'your baby brother' and I'd like to try and avoid that senario if poss.

I've also never had my ds pee in my face...although my ds has had his dad pee on his head, he he he...long story but basically ds very inquisitive (esp re toilet functions)...got abit nosy about what daddy was doing one time and leaned forward at the wrong moment!!!

Scraggyaggy · 19/01/2005 16:55

I am beginning to hate my London days as you guys go mad when I'm tied up in meetings!! It's taken me an hour and a half to catch up!!

Sweetheart - I hope everything is ok. Will be thinking of you. x

Caffeine - I went off it, then avoided it and am now getting bigger and tired-er so am now back on it again, but do feel guilty when I have it. This is bizarre in context as I have no qualms about the odd glass of wine!!

One thing I am doing which is just as strange, is craving sandwiches and cheese. I get belly ache from eating wheat and cows milk screws up my skin, but I can't get enough of them!! Dp would go mad if he knew, so I just have a cheese sandwich when in London....

OP posts:
teabelly · 19/01/2005 17:02

Scraggy - mmm cheese sandwich - could just have one now!!

Well that's me off til monday...good luck to all those having scans tomorrow/friday I hope the little uns are playing ball if you want to find out the sex. I'll pop on when ds is asleep if I can...and see you London lot at TGI's on Saturday

Ta ra. x

mcmudda · 19/01/2005 17:22

Fro goodness sake you lot - slow down will you!!?! I can't keep up with you all at this rate.

We're not finding out the sex because a) we want it to be a surprise b) I love that "It's a boy/girl!!" moment c) my mum would never forgive me - she's a real traditionalist !

I've not cut down on tea, but I will rarely have "proper" coffee now. Although I've invested in lovely decaff beans from Whittards - they taste like the real thing IMO. And NO WAY am I cutting down on chocolate - there are few enough pleasures in this world as it is

Tessiebear · 19/01/2005 18:04

Just popping in to see if Sweetheart is OK - hope your appointment at the hospital went well SH!!!

Tessiebear · 19/01/2005 18:09

Quick question for Lipstick (with food police DH!) Are Anchovies OK???? - i am a complete addict! I have just eaten a small tin. I cut every one up into small pieces to make myself beieve a was just going to have one or two.....

Tessiebear · 19/01/2005 18:16

LUA- ds1 did a wee in my cup of tea once!!! I probably took too long changing his nappy. With DS2 i never had a problem and my rule was

  1. never change them as soon as they wake up
  2. Try and get the whole proceedure done and dusted within a minute
  3. As soon as you have wiped them put their bum in the nappy then while you are creaming them etc if it looks like they are about to wee you can whip the front part of the nappy up to catch it
JonahB · 19/01/2005 18:21

Hi All,

Honestly, I dont sign in for 2 days, and it takes me AGES to catch up!!

Scraggy - I know exactly what you mean re looking pgt. My customers have stopped looking at my face when I walk into a room and just stare at my belly. I'm not quite used to it yet, but i'm sure it definitely on the increase. Beats a mate of mine who lifted my top in a packed restaurant, so he could get a better rub! Guess how pleased I was!!

Charley, big hugs...My mum dont have a particularly good rltnshp, and shes currently driving me loopy in her overexcitement about being a grandma. You can borrow her if you want

Mrs Wed - I'm still firmly on coffee and tea. Caffeine is the only way I can cope with working long hours. I went to bed at 12:15 last night, having just left my boss in his hotel (work talk) and was up at 6am to drive to a 9:30am meeting. Got back home and i'm back online again. There is just no way i could do this without it. Feel a little bad about it, but I try and keep my intake to 2 cups a day. Yes, I know, I'm a sad workaholic , but if work needs doing, I just can't leave it. I'm also eating blue cheese, smoked salmon, nuts (lots). Like, Lipstick says, it such personal choice.

..and give up on chocolate? Are you nuts????? My Mars Bar is staring at me, willing me to consume as we speak....

bubbaloo · 19/01/2005 19:03

evening!
you lot could talk for england
just got in after having my hair done which was a nightmare-my scalp must be soooooooo sensitive at the moment as i couldnt wait for the bleach to be taken off my hair but its all been worth it as im now back to my pink colour(have been brown for the last 6 wks!)
on the caffeine debate i normally get through about 20 cups of tea a day(at work)so have switched to decaff but at home im still drinking normal coffee-only a couple of cups a day though.
we cant wait to find out the sex of the baby but thats because im really impatient and need to know
my fil doesnt want to know so we wont tell him but im convinced im having a boy and dh is convinced its a girl so at least one of us will be right!!
i personally think its up to the individual and it is nice to have the surprise element but i hate surprises!
i suppose you could ask the sonographer to write it down on a piece of paper and put it in an envelope untill you decide whether you want to know.i know someone that did just that and she was really pleased because at first she didnt want to know but then changed her mind
teabelly-dont think i'll change my mind about the meet up-im just not brave enough-LOL!
hope everything went well for you sweetheart.xx

aprilmeadow · 19/01/2005 20:03

I thought i had better post on Sweethearts behalf to let you know that scan showed that she had lost the baby. She is going in to hospital to be induced and has to give birth tomorrow.

Take care
Aprilmeadow

megi · 19/01/2005 20:06

I am not going to find out the sex of the baby, cos when dd was born, my dh said "Its a girl" when she was born, and it was so special! - Also I really don't mind what we have! - I like the idea of saying "the girls", and I nver had a sister and always wanted one, so I would like that for dd. - On the other hand, I would like a "lad" for dh, who is really into footie and sport and stuff! - Maybe I'll have to have a third! !
I can really see the benfits of finding out though - especially as I try to be organised, and would like to be totally prepared.
I have about 2 cuppas a day! Never drink coffee. With dd I went off tea for whole pregnancy, but this time I started drinking it again at about 16 weeks.

katzguk · 19/01/2005 20:24

OMG poor sweetheart

aprilmeadow if you're still aorund please send sweetheart all our love

aprilmeadow · 19/01/2005 20:27

katzguk · 19/01/2005 20:30

Thanks April - if i CAT for an address do you think that flowers from the due in june mums would go down well? or would that be too much? you know her better than us.
My heart goes out to her i know how much she wanted and tried for this baby.

aprilmeadow · 19/01/2005 20:35

Katzguk - that would be lovely.

I am arranging a little bouquet of Tulips (her fav flower) from all of her friends.

I am absolutely gutted for her and her dh. For once i am lost for words! To make it worse i am 27wks pg - i now feel guilty, if that makes sense

katzguk · 19/01/2005 20:38

i will CAT for an address and arrange some flowers from us all.

I feel just awful and guilty, just like you, especially after moaning about the length of my scan.

If there is anything i can do, not that easy from afar i know but please let me know.

aprilmeadow · 19/01/2005 20:39

I will get them sent to my address if thats ok - just incase she doesnt want hers revealed.

Lua · 19/01/2005 20:41

OOH, this is such terrible news!
Aprilmeadow thanks for letting us know, please send sweetheart all our love!
Katz, the bouquet is a very good idea, can I help with it?

Scraggyaggy · 19/01/2005 20:46

April - Please send my love to Sweetheart too. I feel terrible for her. x

OP posts:
katzguk · 19/01/2005 20:46

april - i kinda assumed that!

Lua - i was just going to chose some nice ones probably from tescos as i know theres are nice.

what should i put on the Card?

aprilmeadow · 19/01/2005 20:47

Katz - I think just being there for her when she comes back online will be what she needs - she spends her life chatting to you all and i know how much she will need all the friends she has made on MN to help her get through this horrible time. Its so much easier to 'offload' on this site and also i know she likes the anominity (sp) that MN provides.
