Happy New Year everyone!

Following Katzguk's suggestion I've started up the new thread - hope no-one minds.

Well, I did absolutely nothing for New Year. I have the cold from hell so I was in bed by 9pm. I was very disappointed as we were supposed to be going to a party but I decided not to go as I wouldn't have enjoyed myself and then I'd have made dp miserable too. So, I celebrated by having a lemsip topup at 12 o'clock! (One for the books!) Hope you all had a nice time.

Have been reading your threads about what to buy and what not to buy. I started buying after Christmas as I want to start really enjoying this pregnancy now. Dp is incredibly worried that something will go wrong and we are tempting fate but I don't want to be walking on egg shells for the next 5 months .... yup 5 months already!!! Scary stuff!

Anyway, we have bought a Graco travel system as I have spent hours in the shops clipping and unclipping and puttin them up and down and I found Graco to be lightweight and really simple to use. Then I trawled the internet on boxing day and found that Toys'r'Us was doing some good deals.

Cot is going to be an Ikea special. They are so cheap, I just don't think you can argue and we are big fans of Ikea. However, if anyone has any experiences of this then let me know. We aren't bothering with the moses basket.

I've got a 2-way baby carrier from e-bay, which is still new apparently, although I haven't received it yet so I'll hold bck on judgement.

And then the mumsnet wanted and for sale boards are fantastic. I've got a bottle warmer and a travel cot through mumsnet. I'd reommend that anyone here use them.

There are three things which I need help with though:

  • steriliser; microwave or electric??? Any opinions?
  • breast pump; is there one which is comfortable and easy to use? I don't want to spend a fortune and then not be able to use it.
  • baby monitor; I definitely want one. Am planning on sitting in the garden over the summer, and baby might not want to be moved. Should I get a normal one? A digital one? Has anyone used an under mattress sensor type one? Need big help with this one.

Have bought myself some books on motherhood and new babies too. Am such a planner, I need to be having a good read now so I can put all the theory to practice in 5 months time!

Hope you are all well and not being sick any more! x

before i get linched for not putting on weight can i add that i really needed to lose about a stone!! i have a stone of weight that comes and goes!! plus i was still feeling pretty crappy over christmas so didn't really eat a lot of the normal trimmings! And i had really bad morning sickness where i threw up for 6 days solid (keeping nothing down)and had to have tablets!!

i'm sure now i'm feeling a lot better that the chocolate will roll as will the ben and jerrys and pizza and the weight will pile on and then i'll be moaning about how much weight i've gained and the stretchmarks that have come with it!!

teabelly · 19/01/2005 09:55

Katz.

Tessie shame on you! Although he was rather nice in the 80's (showing my age here!)And can that programme make me cry any more?? I cry at the drop of a hat at the moment so I really shouldn't watch things like Holby, he he he!

sweetheart · 19/01/2005 10:30

Just had a rather embarrasing episode at work. I phoned the hospital just to enquire what would happen if I went over and the nurse was very persistant that I went today.

I started bawling in my office but the upside is that I'm now going to the hospital at 12 o'clock.

Just thought I'd let you all know.

Tessiebear · 19/01/2005 10:35

Sweetheart - good luck - i am sure it will be fine - only an hour and a half to go!!!!
Katz - has your sickness totally gone now?? I know you Really suffered at first. Mine seemed to last forever (although i was never actually sick) but finally went at about 14/15 weeks
McMudda - your house looks lovely btw - have you had enough snow for a snowman?

katzguk · 19/01/2005 10:39

tessie - sick has now gone almost just get the occasional wave now and then.

Sweatheart - i'm sure it will all be fine, at my 16 week appoint my midwife said sahll we have a go at finding the heartbeat and not to worry if she couldn't

mcmudda - my house looked like that yesterday morning too!

MrsWednesday · 19/01/2005 11:07

Good luck Sweetheart!!! I'm sure everything will be fine - not long to go before your mind is put at rest. Is your DH going with you?

Forgot to mention this earlier - I've got a research midwife coming round to my house tonight as I've volunteered to be part of a caffeine in pregnancy study. DH always laughs at me because I love filling in questionnaires, surveys etc so this should be right up my street. What's everyone doing about caffeine? Are you just carrying on as normal or have you cut down?

Are you all you London lot sorted for the meet-up on Saturday? I'm very jealous and am looking forward to hearing all about it.

Tessiebear · 19/01/2005 11:10

Mrs W - i dont drink coffee anyway and the moment i found out i was pg i went right off tea (i am usually a 6 cup a day girl) Drink the odd can of coke. I am not purposly avoiding it but just not fancying anything caffein related...

teabelly · 19/01/2005 11:41

Sweetheart - you've probably already left for the scan but hope all goes well.

Mrs W I'm survey/questionnaire mad too - drives dh potty!! As the name suggests I can't get enough tea, but early on went right off the stuff preferring coffee if anything. Taste for tea has come back now with avengence and I'm probably up to about 10 cups a day again, with the odd coffee here and there so I guess you could say I wasn't avoiding it, he he he! Mind you being veggie I don't have to worry about most of the dos and don'ts - but even the few that remain I tend to ignore; I'm still having blue and unpasturised cheeses if I fancy, and the odd glass or two, or three of wine too!

sweetheart · 19/01/2005 12:00

I haven't left yet - waiting for dh to finish work and pick me up - luckily he's managed to skive off to come with me.

I'll let you know how it went later.

Tessiebear · 19/01/2005 12:25

You go for it Teabelly!!!! I must admit this time round i havnt worried as much about cheese / seafood ... and dont even get me started on Tuna ... with DS's i was told to practically live on Tuna as ist was so good for you .... now suddenly we are restricted to 2 cans a week - you can forget that for a start, although i have cut down from my usual consumption. I wish my love for tea would return. With both my DS's i fancied a cup the minute they were delivered. I really miss my morning cup of tea, it is all part of the morning routine for me , but i just dont fancy it at all!

katzguk · 19/01/2005 12:27

i went off tea with DD and again with this one, i can now just about stomache a cup of hot water with milk that has been shown a teabag, i think i would get done on the trade description act if i called it tea

Tessiebear · 19/01/2005 12:28

LOL Katz - thats how i drink my tea normally!!!

Tessiebear · 19/01/2005 12:30

Just had a phone call from a good friends DH. She had her third boy last night! She went in for a check up at about 4.30 as she has strep B. Labour started while she was in her appointment and she had delivered by 7pm!!!

katzguk · 19/01/2005 12:30

same here but normally just a tad stronger, the fluid at least used to change colour now i guess i shouldn't waste a teabag but i swear it does taste different if you don't add the bag for 2 secs

katzguk · 19/01/2005 12:31

ahhhh babies!

MrsWednesday · 19/01/2005 12:37

That's not tea!!! Tea is when you can stand the spoon up in the cup.

I have cut down drinking caffeine a bit - no coffee and just a couple of cups of green tea a day, but there's caffeine in chocolate too, and I certainly am not cutting back on that. I remember in the early days on this thread everyone seemed to go off chocolate, is that still the case?

It's reassuring to know that I am not the only one who hasn't been too strict on the diet stuff. I'm still eating smoked salmon at least twice a week (will be having it in a sandwich today!). In fact I asked my midwife about it and she hadn't heard that we weren't supposed to eat it and told me to carry on. Have even been known to have the odd poached egg with the yolk STILL RUNNY!!!! (Shh, please don't tell the pregnancy police).

Blimey Tessiebear, sounds like a quick one!

Right, off for my lunch. Thinking of you Sweetheart, hope it's all ok.

Tessiebear · 19/01/2005 12:37

I am really glad she has had her third boy as well .... then when i have mine (i dont know it is a boy but am SURE it will be) i wont get jeleous that she has a girl!

LipstickMum · 19/01/2005 12:46

Wow, you ladies have been very busy, as usual!

I need to do a quick survey; shall I find out the sex of the baby????? I do not know what to do!!! With dd, I convinced myself that I was having a boy, because I secretly wanted a girl and prepared myself for having a boy. When dd popped out, we were both so amazed - and I was delighted!
This time round, I don't really know. On one hand I would like to be able to say "the girls" (God, I'll sound like Sally Webster from Corrie lol !!). It wil be very handy with clothes and stuff. But I would also love to have a boy, just so I have one of each and we have 2 fantastic ( I think!) boys names picked out.

I know someone on this thread (sorry, can't remember who) found out about the sex and their dh was disppointed but now they have time to 'get used' to the idea of the babies sex. SO, I am thinking, if we do find out and I am disappointed, at least I will give myself time to get used to it. At this point I'm not sure which I would prefer, but I know when I'm told I'll know iykwim??

What shall I do?? I don't think dp will mind knowing, think he wanted to know with the last one, but I didn't. Actually, I am really scared that it wont be what I want and I'll be miserable for the rest of the prgnancy Sorry, this is a major rant, but what do you wise 'due in June' ladies think???

Tessiebear · 19/01/2005 12:51

Lipstick - have given this one a lot of thought myself (as secretly want a girl) have decided that NOT finding out is not going to make it a girl ... it would just mean that i could pretend it might be for another few months. So bearing this in mind i have decided it would be kinder to myself to find out and get used to the idea ... whatever it is ... then if it is a boy (which i am sure it is) i wont feel any dissapointment when it is born, and will forget ,by then, the idea of ever having a girl existed IYSWIM!

katzguk · 19/01/2005 12:55

i didn't find out purely because i didn't want to know, we have no preferrence re boy/girl. We have a DD so another girl would be great we have loads of clothes ect but as we have a DD a boy would be nice for a change. Also after the scan took 1 h nearly just to do the basic stuff i didn't fancy asking them to have a look for the sex.

DD would like a baby sister but i'm not sure that she knows that it means a girl!!

LipstickMum · 19/01/2005 12:55

Re the food stuff, as you know I live with a member of the 'Pregnancy Food Police' (He's a Major ).
I do eat/drink:
Tea about 3 cups a day, but also lots of water.
Seafood cooked by me e.g. prawns
the odd glass of alcohol, wine/sherry, maybe 2 a week, if that.
Organic smoked salmon

I don't eat/drink:
Coffee (have had maybe 6 cups all pregnancy)
Blue and unpasturised cheese
Very soft yolks/stuff with raw eggs in.
Peanuts/butter

But, it's up to you to decide what 'risk' you're prepared to live with. It's very tricky, I hate it! We all assess risk differently.

LipstickMum · 19/01/2005 12:57

Tessie I am edging towards finding out, it will depend on how dp feels about knowing and what he secretly hopes for.

Lua · 19/01/2005 14:12

Mrs. W I am so glad you brought up the caffeine issue. I completely banned caffeine when pregnant with DD, but I am being realy bad this time around... I try not to have more than two caffeinated drinks a day (but coffe for me is a full 8oz. strong coffee...). I feel guilty, but now feel better since teabelly is up to 10 cups of tea herself! Let us know what the MW doing the research thinks about it!

Teabelly, I am a vegetarian too! Have you changed your diet?! Again, last preganancy was totally paranoid and counting protein, calories, etc. But I just can't be bothered this time...

Will have a hyperactive malnurished DS

MrsWednesday · 19/01/2005 14:25

I will definitely ask the midwife tonight Lua, as it seems to be one of those grey areas. How's your DH, is he getting used to the idea of having a DS now? If you don't mind me asking, what worries him about having a son?

Can understand your dilemma Lippy, it's so tempting to find out. I'm not going to, but I can completely understand why people do. If you like to be organised, it's probably easier to know now. Tessiebear, I was talking to a bloke at work once about this actually - he said the same as you, that they didn't find out with their first two boys, but did with the third pregnancy because they wanted to have longer to get used to the idea if it was another boy (and it was). When is your scan?

Teabelly, glad I'm not the only one who's survey-mad. When I was on maternity leave with DS my DH came home to find me chatting to a market researcher I'd invited in (desperate for grown-up company after a day at home with a newborn).

LipstickMum · 19/01/2005 14:50

Lua, on the caffeine issue. Even though tea does have caffeine in it, it is much less than coffe, I can't remember where I read the stats (I'll see if I can dig them out) but I remember breathing a sigh of relief and not feeling too guilty about my 3 cups of tea a day.
