Happy New Year everyone!

Following Katzguk's suggestion I've started up the new thread - hope no-one minds.

Well, I did absolutely nothing for New Year. I have the cold from hell so I was in bed by 9pm. I was very disappointed as we were supposed to be going to a party but I decided not to go as I wouldn't have enjoyed myself and then I'd have made dp miserable too. So, I celebrated by having a lemsip topup at 12 o'clock! (One for the books!) Hope you all had a nice time.

Have been reading your threads about what to buy and what not to buy. I started buying after Christmas as I want to start really enjoying this pregnancy now. Dp is incredibly worried that something will go wrong and we are tempting fate but I don't want to be walking on egg shells for the next 5 months .... yup 5 months already!!! Scary stuff!

Anyway, we have bought a Graco travel system as I have spent hours in the shops clipping and unclipping and puttin them up and down and I found Graco to be lightweight and really simple to use. Then I trawled the internet on boxing day and found that Toys'r'Us was doing some good deals.

Cot is going to be an Ikea special. They are so cheap, I just don't think you can argue and we are big fans of Ikea. However, if anyone has any experiences of this then let me know. We aren't bothering with the moses basket.

I've got a 2-way baby carrier from e-bay, which is still new apparently, although I haven't received it yet so I'll hold bck on judgement.

And then the mumsnet wanted and for sale boards are fantastic. I've got a bottle warmer and a travel cot through mumsnet. I'd reommend that anyone here use them.

There are three things which I need help with though:

  • steriliser; microwave or electric??? Any opinions?
  • breast pump; is there one which is comfortable and easy to use? I don't want to spend a fortune and then not be able to use it.
  • baby monitor; I definitely want one. Am planning on sitting in the garden over the summer, and baby might not want to be moved. Should I get a normal one? A digital one? Has anyone used an under mattress sensor type one? Need big help with this one.

Have bought myself some books on motherhood and new babies too. Am such a planner, I need to be having a good read now so I can put all the theory to practice in 5 months time!

Hope you are all well and not being sick any more! x

Oh Sweetheart try not to worry, my bubba's lying real low and each time I go my mw struggles to find the heartbeat at first - like me you also had trouble at the early scan and had to have an internal...these little ones just want to be private

LipstickMum · 18/01/2005 16:03

Sweetheart, you mean after your appt this pm and the midwife not being able to locate the baby's heartbeat (which was probably just the baby lying awkwardly) you have to wait 2 weeks !!?? Good grief, that's tough, surely they ust know how distressing that would be??

So Tessie and Sweet aren't coming to lunch, this is making me feel really brave

I have my scan on the 4th of Feb (like Megi) and we are not finding out the sex of the baby. Despite my better judgement knowing how useful it would be on a practical basis, I just can't know in advance!!

sweetheart · 18/01/2005 16:08

My midwife did say that I could go to the hospital and ask for an extra scan done - but she also said she can hear movement (just not a heartbeat) so she doesn't think there is anything to worry about. I'm sure if she was worried she would have sent me straight to the hospital.

Also, if we were to visit the hospital we would probably have to wait about 4 hours.

I don't consider 2 weeks to be too bad - my friend who is pregnant but in a different town had the same problem at her 16 week check. Her midwife told her to wait until her 20 week scan to make sure everything was ok so all in all I think 2 weeks is alright.

LipstickMum · 18/01/2005 16:18

Good, I'm glad you're being rational about it. Just one of those things I suppose, those babies do love to wriggle!

teabelly · 18/01/2005 16:39

Anyone else out there bored?? I've just finished a busy period at work and can't motivate myself to do anything now...had a glass of wine at lunch time which hasn't helped any, and I can't seem to find anything interesting to look up on the internet...can't play games as they'd be too noisy and boss will hear

...bored bored bored...

oh well 25mins till I can go home...anything good on the telly tonight? McMudda are you covered in snow yet?? What's everyone having for tea tonight?...see I am bored - inane questions...please ignore me

sweetheart · 18/01/2005 16:42

I'm bored!!!!

Have lots I should be getting on with but I've been working really hard recently so I've decided to take a well earned 1/2 hour off!!!!!

I will be having gammon with pineapple and chips tonight for tea.

Oh and dd and I will be settling down to watch Holby City together!!!

teabelly · 18/01/2005 16:49

Ooh Holby - forgot that's on a tuesday, great...I'm veggie so the gammon's out but egg and chips is one of my favorite meals...now you've put that thought into my head I may have to have it

charleypops · 18/01/2005 16:50

Don't be bored girlies! go to bored.com x

Tbelly, MrsW, thanks re my mum - I'd love to do a swap T! Change is as good as a rest!

Sweetheart - 2 weeks is a loooonnnnggg time to wait isn't it. I can't help taking paracetamol either. This particular friend of mine is childless, not likely to have any and not the most well informed or tactful of people at times, so I'm not letting it worry me.

Lippy and Megi, I also have my scan on the 4th Feb!! I am definitely going to ask what sex it is. I couldn't bear not to know!

I've gone from a C cup to a D cup which I love hope they stay like this!

I had a reduction in 1988. I was so huge I never found out what size I was, never found a bra to fit! . I felt like a freak because it simply wasn't fashionable to have big boobs back then. Then guess what happened - yup in (what seemed like) 1989, big boobs were suddenly VERY fashionable and have been ever since

Can I recommend Tesco's moulded underwired bras for anyone around my size (32D)? They're only £6, and perfectly fine - I have a couple of black ones and they are a nice shape I think. Shoulder straps probably a bit narrow if you have massive boulders

sweetheart · 18/01/2005 16:55

glad to be of service teabelly

Right, thats me off home!!!!

See you all later

bubbaloo · 18/01/2005 17:21

evening all,
glad everyones doing fine
ive just got back from my doc's and im feeling soooo much better.i told him i wasnt feeling anything and after what seemed like ages he found the heartbeat-yipee!!
funny thing was he said the baby even kicked him and i never even felt it
he also said my uterus seems 4 weeks larger than it should but apparently he said that was a good thing-just hope it doesnt mean baby is coming 4 wks early!
got some iron tablets which im not looking forward to as im really constipated already and then he's aldo given me something for the constipation,so it could go either way
i understand exactly how you feel tessie and sweetheart-i was in two minds whether to go to the meet-up but perhaps maybe i'll go to the next-dont know why im being so silly really
anyway have a nice evening everyone-we have friends for dinner tonight

Scraggyaggy · 18/01/2005 17:28

Sweetheart - I have come to the conclusion that these professionals need to be shot. I hate the NHS (sorry, v political rant). It pi**es me off when people tell you something, you have no idea what it means, and then they just leave it dngling there, tell you not to worry and to come back in two weeks. Well, as soon as they so those magic words "It's nothing to worry about dear." "It's perfectly normal dear." "We're just being cautious.", well, your mind goes into overdrive (perhaps I just speak for myself....) and you do worry and you do think it isn't normal and you obviously associate the word caution with a potential problem. Grrrr . Oh, and to cap it off, they then say that if YOU are worried then you can do X, which of course you won't do, as you don't really know what it is you are worrying about!! I think they should have a policy of saying "We couldn't do X today. The baby must be doing X. Why don't we try again in 2 week's time? Is that ok?" Would be a far more sensible approach. Apologies, if I upset or offend anyone with my views.

Charley - Is there any way you and your mum can patch things up? I find it strange (for want of a better word) that she went to the length of phoning you to tell you that she is sending your things over. Do you think she might be too proud to make the first move??

Lippy / Teabelly - I know what you mean about starting to look pg. A client did a double take at me today in a meeting!! He had that look on his face as if to say "Are you pg or just really fat after Xmas?" Funny thing was, his voice must've had an effect on baby, as every time he spoke I'd get a series of thumps in my belly!!!

Sweetheart / Tessiebear - It would be lovely if you came to the meet up. I am so looking forward to being able to meet everyone in person. I imagine you all in different ways, fat / thin (no offence but some of you sound so slim I think I'm going to appear to be a heffalump in comparison!!), shy / outgoing, even what your voices must sound like!!! I'm sure that none of you will be as I imagined. And I'm sure that I won't be as you are expecting either!! I think it'll be a really fun day!!

Welshie - Am glad you enjoyed your scan. Can't believe that you are going to be able to keep it a secret!! I don't think I would be able to.

Am having a better day today, although I am quite shattered (hence being a little ratty - apologies everyone), having got back so late last night and then back on the 7am train this morning. However, I am almost home now as I knocked off super early . Happy days!

We're having spag bol tonight. Mmmm lush! And am glad that Sweetheart reminded us of Holby City. Superb! Have got Enders to watch from last night (my mum is the best, she always videos it for me if I am late he he!), Enders tonight and then Holby. Excellent!!!

Have a nice evening everyone! (And do ignore my comments if you disgaree, am tired and feel a bit defensive) x

Snowed in today so missed my meet up in Stirling which I was really looking forward to.

Our house in the snow!

We've rescheduled to meet up again next week, so fingers crossed. Nat71 on the Stirling meet-up thread says she's 19 weeks preg so I'll see if I can persuade her to come on this thread too!!

After the trauma of the puppets from hell yesterday, ds woke up this morning and the first thing he said to me was "I didn't like the puppets at toddler group" - word for word - I nearly fell over - he's only 2 and 4 months. The scars of evil puppetry must've really affected him Poor boy!

Have a nice evening everyone

charleypops · 18/01/2005 19:52

Hi Scraggy - not that simple, wish it was! Horrid situation

charleypops · 18/01/2005 19:53

McMudda - What a lovely house! Hope you're not still having to chop logs to keep warm though!

PinkArjuna · 18/01/2005 21:21

Bloody hell I don't come on for one day and the thread is the length of a bible.

Bought my train tickets today for the meet
I am much more interested in the pregnancy now I can feel the kicks all the time. It doesn't feel so hypothetical.

I think the baby is huge - my belly button is going to be a complete outy soon I noticed today it is growing at a rate of knots! I am loosing site below the bump

I have put on 10 pounds too. I think it is pretty normal. I seem to actually be thinner in some places than before but really I think it is my boobs and all the baby amniotic fluid etc... and the water retention that collects in my legs I don't really eat any more than before and the midwife said at my last appointment I had good growth and I can wear nearly all my before clothes - its only my tummy thats bigger and the bit at the top of my thighs - infact the places where it says in all the books you are supposed to gain to protect the baby so I don't mind. I guess it'll just be the baby growing from now on.

My friend Willow said as she was so sick earlier on that all the weight went on after 20 weeks but for people who had gained steadily it wasn't too bad your body doesn't feel the strain so much apprently if it happens gradually.

My new Sofa arrives on Friday! and I am gonna go and play with my powerdrill now - I have shelves to put up. Oh and I got £500 quid today that should have been paid to me back in June - nice to get money you hadn't counted on I bought a new watch I have been going around without one for months and months. I will also invest in a Hug a bub.

Is anyone else considering a hug a bub?

Oh Bubbaloo I have the blue quattro too. I got it all in with the base in a one off sale :O I've never really heard of girly prams seems good for either if you ask me

Scraggyaggy · 19/01/2005 08:05

Charleypops - Big hug. x

sweetheart · 19/01/2005 08:16

Scraggy, I'm sorry you feel you've been let down by the NHS!!! I do agree that they should consider the high state of emotions throughout pregnancy and be a little more gentle with us!!! I hope your feeling a little more relaxed today.

As predicted, after my appointment with the midwife yesterday I'm now climbing the walls wondering if there is something wrong!!!!

Dh went out last night but I'm going to speak to him later today and see what he thinks - I.e. Make sure I'm not being totally irrational. I think I may go over to the hospital just to put my mind at rest.

You know what it's like - you just spend all your time worrying about it otherwise!!!!

Please tell me I'm not over reacting!!!!

teabelly · 19/01/2005 08:59

Morning all,

Sweetheart no you're not overreacting...obviously everything's going to be fine, and bubba's just playing hide and seek, but it's better to put your mind at rest than spend ages worrying - better for you and bubba. Hope you were able to negotiate a good deal with your boss re mat leave/pay, even when I was working out the figures I couldn't believe how much someone would have to earn to get a better deal from getting 1/2 their salary compared to taking the SMP deal!!

Pink - I've not seen a hug a bub before - looks comfy, but the straps are abit wide for me.

Bubbaloo - what do you mean your not coming either to the London Meet?? Go on come along - then you might be able to persuade Sweetheart and Tessie to come too

Well getting loads of movement from bubba today...have just had porridge with syrup tho so I guess s/he has a sweet tooth already!!

katzguk · 19/01/2005 09:07

morning

In work today so will be able to keep up with the thread better! boy can you guys chat!!

i feel like pants again this morning, think i might be anaemic, feeling dizzy tired and breathless so i'm guessing thats what it is. Haven't told DH because he just stresses, seeing my midwife soon so will sort it then. just need to eat lots of iron rich food now!!!

well my baby is a real wriggler. Although everyone at work agreed that i didn't look PG m bump hasn't chanegd size since about 12weeks but the baby is growing i'm just shrinking, haven't climb on the scales but i'm betting that i have not gained any weight! i didn't with DD in fact lost it, some poeple do when pregnant apparently, something to do with better metatabolism and nothing to owrry about. The only bug bear is as time has gone on i'm looking less pregnant, i'm replacing fat with baby!!

teabelly · 19/01/2005 09:13

Wow Katz - so does that mean you're not in mat clothes yet?? I couldn't hide my bump if I tried...even had a couple of double takes from train regulars when I took my coat off this morning

tribpot · 19/01/2005 09:16

Sweetheart, so sorry to hear about your midwife's appointment. Did I post when I had a similar one a few weeks ago? Midwife spent half an hour trying to find the heartbeat whilst I attempted not to panic. She located it in the end after I'd been to the loo, naughty baby hiding behind mummy's bladder! I figured if she really couldn't find it, she'd send me to the hospital to hang about endlessly for a scan, not say "hey ho, come back in a couple of weeks and we'll try again"! Can you go to the hospital? I was trying to be rational about things and not assume the worst, but there's no way I could have kept that up for two weeks.

Charley - so sorry to hear about your mum as well. Be cool. I think at some point she will have to cave if she wants to play granny, but still very distressing for you. Tragically although MIL shows no interest on the phone, I fear that now her father's died she's looking around for someone else to look after and that's not going to be my baby! (In person I have to put up with masses of 'helpful' advice and comments like "I've learnt so much about raising kids since I had mine, I wish I had a chance to do it all over again" )

katzguk · 19/01/2005 09:17

wearing maternity clothes to try and emphase the bump!! can still wear a lot of my normal clothes but don't tell DH because i've bought a load of maternity clothes! I still quite defineatly look fat and not pregnant. I think i was expecting to look more PG because my bump appeared earlier than with DD but it just not expanded. But then with DD people didn't know i was PG until i told them at 24 weeks and even then they were totally taken aback by how pregnant i was!! presumed only just!

Tessiebear · 19/01/2005 09:30

Sweetheart - re the bloods thing: I had antibodies in my blood when i was pg with DS1 and i spent weeks worrying about it ... on the next blood test everything was fine ... the midwife said to me that funny things can happen to your bloods during pregnancy and you shouldnt worry (although i know you will!)
30th June - you are now due 1 day later than me!
Holby city was great last night. I am soooo glad to see Zubin back (i have a small crush on him) ... goes off cringing with embarrasement at confession!!!

Tessiebear · 19/01/2005 09:33

Charleypops - so sorry about your mum, i know how upsetting it must be. Have you ever been close to her? - do you think things could be resolved?

MrsWednesday · 19/01/2005 09:42

Morning all,

Sweetheart, if you can get the time off work why don't you go to the hospital for a check-up scan? Two weeks is a long time to spend worrying. I think I'd do the same if I were you, I just can't cope with the stress! I'm sure everything will be absolutely fine but a scan would definitely give you peace of mind.

I'm suffering from a very annoying symptom at the moment - one permanently blocked nostril! Very weird.

Katzguk, I can't believe you haven't put ANY weight on! I've put on about 10 pounds I think, which seems about average judging by everyone else on here.

Lots of work to do today but I'm distinctly lacking in motivation....
