Happy New Year everyone!

Following Katzguk's suggestion I've started up the new thread - hope no-one minds.

Well, I did absolutely nothing for New Year. I have the cold from hell so I was in bed by 9pm. I was very disappointed as we were supposed to be going to a party but I decided not to go as I wouldn't have enjoyed myself and then I'd have made dp miserable too. So, I celebrated by having a lemsip topup at 12 o'clock! (One for the books!) Hope you all had a nice time.

Have been reading your threads about what to buy and what not to buy. I started buying after Christmas as I want to start really enjoying this pregnancy now. Dp is incredibly worried that something will go wrong and we are tempting fate but I don't want to be walking on egg shells for the next 5 months .... yup 5 months already!!! Scary stuff!

Anyway, we have bought a Graco travel system as I have spent hours in the shops clipping and unclipping and puttin them up and down and I found Graco to be lightweight and really simple to use. Then I trawled the internet on boxing day and found that Toys'r'Us was doing some good deals.

Cot is going to be an Ikea special. They are so cheap, I just don't think you can argue and we are big fans of Ikea. However, if anyone has any experiences of this then let me know. We aren't bothering with the moses basket.

I've got a 2-way baby carrier from e-bay, which is still new apparently, although I haven't received it yet so I'll hold bck on judgement.

And then the mumsnet wanted and for sale boards are fantastic. I've got a bottle warmer and a travel cot through mumsnet. I'd reommend that anyone here use them.

There are three things which I need help with though:

  • steriliser; microwave or electric??? Any opinions?
  • breast pump; is there one which is comfortable and easy to use? I don't want to spend a fortune and then not be able to use it.
  • baby monitor; I definitely want one. Am planning on sitting in the garden over the summer, and baby might not want to be moved. Should I get a normal one? A digital one? Has anyone used an under mattress sensor type one? Need big help with this one.

Have bought myself some books on motherhood and new babies too. Am such a planner, I need to be having a good read now so I can put all the theory to practice in 5 months time!

Hope you are all well and not being sick any more! x

Welshie, bless her

katzguk · 17/01/2005 15:14

ahhhh welshie!

Re not finding out the sex it was easy mainly because the scan was taking ages because of the babies position but also because DD was there and keep saying my little sister and we'd correct her and say we don't know darling and don't want to know so the scanman didn't even ask for i didn't have to actually say no!! might not have been able to resist if faced with the fact that he knew!

tribpot · 17/01/2005 15:39

Scraggy, sorry to hear about your repeat scan, I can't believe they can just present you with some piece of information like that and then not give you any clues as to what it might mean.

I'm getting totally hacked off with dh's parents. Every time either of them phone, they only ever ask how dh is doing. Now, admittedly he is chronically ill so I'm not really surprised they are concerned! But HELLO, I am carrying their second grandchild in here, some show of interest in my health might be appropriate. (Mind you, I've never even met my father-in-law as he couldn't be a*sed coming to our wedding last year).

Having said that, I don't know even know if FIL knows that I'm pregnant. He never sees his granddaughter so I can't imagine he'll be taking much interest in this one either. Thank god for my family, that's all I can say!

teabelly · 17/01/2005 16:16

So Tripot how is DH doing?..... only joking don't shout at me! Families - it's true what they say about choosing friends and not families...sorry they're being the way they are, at least your family are happy and showing an interest - also you probably won't get the overkill from two doting grannies who both get very jealous at the mere mention that the other one saw their grandson this week and they haven't...sometimes it's a blessing when they're not that interested

teabelly · 17/01/2005 16:25

sorry Tribpot missed the 'b' out in your name...forgive me [slinks away quietly...]

BUBBALOO · 17/01/2005 16:30

afternoon all,
glad your scan went well katz and scraggy im sure having a small head cant be a bad thing
ive got a couple of days off work so we decided to "look" at the travel systems in mothercare BUT i ended up buying one today as it was in the sale and i couldnt resist it-it was a bargain!!!
its a graco quattro one in a dark blue and has loads of good things about it.
we even test drove it round the car park, folded it to see how it would fit in the boot and fixed the car seat bit quite easily too!
we're going back tomorrow with my mum and her car to see if the base will fit, seeing as she's going to be having the baby for a couple of days a week when i go back to work.
the only downside is thats its blue and dh is worried it'll look silly if we have a girl but i think it doesnt really matter and anyway most are either blue or black!
also bought a huge baby gym/arch from the elc which is really sweet but we have now definately decided not to buy anything else at all untill about april
still havent felt much movement from the baby which is a bit worrying but ive got a doc's appointment tomorrow so hopefully he can have a listen

MrsWednesday · 17/01/2005 16:35

Welshmum, that is lovely. Wish my DS would say something nice - the other day he told me to 'stop singing mummy' when we were in the car together (I do have a terrible singing voice but still...)

Tribpot, sorry the in-laws aren't showing much interest. Hopefully when the baby arrives they'll appreciate it (and you!) a bit more. Can't believe your FIL didn't come to your wedding, that's shocking.

Teabelly, sounds like you are speaking from bitter experience there! My ILs are great, they show interest in DS without it being too overpowering, but they do have four other grandchildren so there's not a great sense of novelty about it all for them (although DS is the only boy).

teabelly · 17/01/2005 16:50

Bubbaloo she will look alot better in a navy pram than he will in a pink one, he he he!

Mrs W - yeah unfortunately ds is mil's only grandchild and my mum's only grandson - it's fab that they both love him and want to spend time with him, but can be a bit draining trying to remember not to mention that mil & I went shopping, or mum had ds over night...hey ho!

JonahB · 17/01/2005 18:35

Hi All,

Weeb & Teabelly, thanks so much for your feedback. I'm glad neither of you knew any big reasons why I shouldn't get it.

McMudda, as another smally, I can't believe you've put on such little weight compared to me! I'm quite jealous! I've put on about 10 pounds so far! Does that make me a big hefalump or are you not eating as much chocolate as me??

Katz, glad all went to well for the scan. Good luck for tomorrow Welshmum. My 19 week scanner was the same as yours Scraggy and just wouldn't answer my questions or share our excitement or enthusiasm at all. I know they see these all day, but we couldn't help thinking she was slightly in the wrong job if she wasn't interested in babies and explaining to us what we were seeing. I'm also a little concerned cos everyone i've heard from told me that their babies were wigglers. Mine just kind of lay there, asleep. Hope that's normal and a sign that Butterbean will be a fantastic sleeper ....

bubbaloo · 17/01/2005 18:53

jonahb,if its any consolation ive also put on about 10lbs but have now decided to be a bit more carefull during the next few months especially as i was rather large to start with
our baby also seemed to sleep alot during my first scan as the sonographer had to keep prodding me to wake him or her up so im sure thats quite normal

LipstickMum · 17/01/2005 19:07

I've decided not to weigh myself regularly. I think I have put on about 10lbs. I think the 1st and last trimester are when you are meant to put on the most of the overall weight.

Today was not exactly poo for me, but was in some ways. Dd and I had a really busy day, music in the morning, home for a nap, woke her after 90 mins sleep to get to the library for storytime and drawing at 2pm. Went to Mothercare on the way home for various things. I bought a denim skirt from there, we'll see if dp likes it, always have to check with him, but that's another sad story... Can't wear normal jeans anymore, they are too uncomfortable now (17 wks)! Wearing maternity gear was HEAVEN!!!

When I got home I was just shattered. Too much running around after dd, lifting her up etc. It really made me wonder what the fck is it going to be like later on when I am a hippo???? HOw will I manage? Anyone else onto number 2 or 3 wondering the same?

Back to the clothes thing, this is something you will not have a problem with Pink, so feel free to laugh and my pathetic, unemancipated-ness. Generally I buy clothes I like and wear them regardless, but sometimes I 'worry' dp will hate them. Anyway, this skirt I bought is one such item. Am not 100% about it myself, need to see it on with boots and tights, not ankle socks and Merrells (and hairy legs ) !!

Ok, now having said I wont, I'm off to weigh myself

LipstickMum · 17/01/2005 19:10

Well, according to my scales I weigh 10 and a half stone, which means I have put on about half a stone, maybe less. That's much less than I thought! Will have another choccy milkshake then

Scraggyaggy · 17/01/2005 20:25

Evening all!

Thank you for all your lovely messages. I'm feeling slightly better now I've spoken to my mw. She is going to come and see us on Thurs, and made all the right reassuring noises so am feeling ok, just tired and washed out.

Katz - am so pleased your scan went well and that dd enjoyed it too.

Welshie - you are such a lucky mummy to have such a lovely dd!

Tribpot - I wouldn't worry about the ils. I think it is so hard to find ils that you truly harmonize with. At least you don't have to pretend to like them or pretend to agree with them or such like.

Bubbaloo - with the Graco, I thought you could strap the carrier in as a car seat without the base? My one does and so does sil's. They are designed specially, so it should be fine for mil's car.

Jonah - Thank you for the empathy. Mine had obviously had a late night and got out of bed the worng side. Hope we don't see her again in 2 weeks time!!

Lippy - I'm sure the skirt is lovely, and what the hell if it's not, I'm sure it's comfortable and serves it's purpose. I have learnt the hard way that pregnant ladies just can't be picky when it come to clothes!!

To top my shi**y day off, it is now 8.30pm and I am stuck on a train, trying to get home, so I can go out for dinner with my family, and it doesn't look as through I'm going to get home tonight at all - as there is a signal failure. Apparently it could be a manual job, which could take friggin' hours. Oh and I have to be back in London again for a 9am meeting. Oh, I love my life!

Lua · 17/01/2005 20:53

Evening all! Have been locked in a meeting the whole day, and missed a lot of chatting!

Scraggy - Hope you make it home soon!
Bubaloo- I have a blue graco system. Has been very happy with it. Never though about the color when bought for my DD, but am sure glad is not pinknow that found out #2 is a DS!
Is anyone else like me. Thought of myself as very progressive with DD and bought her lots of green and blue clothes, cars and soccer balls. But can't imagine clothing DS in not even a pink pijama!
No wonder sexism is forever perpetuated!

Katz and scraggy congrats on scans! My dd was born on the 95% percentile for lenght and 25% for head circunference - and I pushed for less than 45 minutes. So it could be a good thing at birth time.

bubbaloo · 17/01/2005 20:56

glad your feeling a bit better scraggy-must be really re-assuring now youve seen the midwife
know what you mean about train journeys-i normally spend 2 hours a day on the central line and i hate it!
yes your right about the bases but because our seat belts at the back arent long enough we will have to use a base BUT in the front(we dont have an airbag!)we can get away without one which is good
only thing is that with the baby in the back with the base he/she will be quite upright whereas in the front the position is more reclining,so mothercare advised us to put the baby in the front for the first couple of months then move him/her into the back later on.
shouldnt be too much of a problem though as we never really go on long journeys and she said the baby can still stay in the car seat bit for 2 hours so that should be fine
we've also decided to take the travel system over to my fil tomorrow as im now getting worried about superstitions so i'll feel happier if its not in the house

megi · 17/01/2005 21:02

Lippy - I bet the skirt is fine - I totally agree, going into maternity gear after wearing normal clothes which were a bit tight is pure heaven! I am really lucky cos we have shop near us which does Next seconds - and they usually have maternity clothes in. I went on Saturday and got three pairs of next trousers for £21! One pair was some dusty pink cords, which did have a slight blemish on the material - sort of looked like it might have been caught, but was not a hole - and didn't look like it would get any worse. Would not normally buy stuff which was such an obvious second - but I really don't care what I look like - and For £7 you can't go wrong!
Good luck to everyone who has scans coming up - mine is at about 22 weeks - so on the 4th Feb!

LipstickMum · 17/01/2005 22:10

Oooooh, we have a Next seconds shop here that sells maternity, I must remember to go in. Skirt is fine and I will probablywear it on Sat so that I can fit in my huge lunch

Scraggyaggy · 18/01/2005 07:27

Morning all!

Got home an hour late, so poor old family had to wait to be fed! Then, I felt so rotten that I couldn't really eat anything, which is not like me at all, but the good thing is that we saw a young deer on the way home, just strolling down the road - it looked like Bambi! And do you know what I thought? "I wish baby was here so I could show 'him'." Soon... not long now!

Lua - Thanks for your message. Am now feeling quite positive and actually am hoping that baby's head stays small , but that 'he' grows enough in the next two weeks for the hospital to be satisfied.

Megi - I hadn't even thought of looking in "Next to Nothing". I don't really need anything new now.. but then again...

I hadn't even thought about what to wear on Saturday!!! OMG! First time to meet you all - must make a good impression! Anyone know what the weather's going to be like? I've just procured a fab dress from another MN-netter, but would have to wear tights. Perhaps, I'll just be boring and wear my jeans.... x

LipstickMum · 18/01/2005 09:33

Well, it's happened; I finally dug out my maternity jeans and am wearing them today don't know whether to feel or !!

teabelly · 18/01/2005 09:53

Lippy definitely ...this is where we no longer look fat and start to look pg, yippee!!

LipstickMum · 18/01/2005 12:17

..true.

charleypops · 18/01/2005 12:41

Dp broke my computer on Friday afternoon , I've just managed to fix it now after working on it all weekend a nightmare trip to PC Word yesterday which involved me going on the M25 by accident for 52 miles in lashing rain and nearly running out of petrol.

Hope you're all well - just going to read all your posts since Friday morning. It's going to take a while.... see you later x

Tessiebear · 18/01/2005 12:52

Scraggy - i am sure your scan is nothing to worry about - i am sure they would have told you if there was a problem.
Hope everyone is well. I plucked up courage to weigh myself this morning and i have only put on a stone (which for me is REALLY good, considering i put on about 5 stone in total with each of my boys!!)
My 20 week scan is on Valentines day! I cannot wait! As someone said it is really weird to think that is the last time you see your baby until it is born!
BTW - is Sweetheart about???? Have i missed her posts or has she gone AWOL?? - Or is she spending rather more time on the due in July thread - i know her dates were on the boarderline.

welshmum · 18/01/2005 12:59

Morning all, just back from the scan and it was DELIGHTFUL. I'm just so happy, happy, happy. Hadn't realised how much I must have been worrying about it subconciously. The sonographer was really lovely, full of sweet comments. It really was tops. She says baby will be 8 or 9 lbs if it carries on the way it is.
To celebrate my happiness I went to work via Topshop and bought 2 mat dresses and a skirt. I am a total girl!

bubbaloo · 18/01/2005 13:01

brilliant news welshmum!
