OP posts:

Nettiehay - I was told not to put the cot up either by dh's gran, I tried really hard not to, but once my nesting kicked in about 36 weeks I had dh assemble it and when he wasn't there I put all the bedding in (it looked so pretty). I think you do what you feel comfortable with, I think its all a load of rubbish but I know a lot of people worry about it, but when is the right time??

Ernest - you've got a lovely bump, mines not as pretty as yours, although I seem to have stopped putting weight on - I take it I'm losing weight 'cos the baby is def getting bigger.

PiggyPenguin · 16/04/2008 12:30

I wouldn't worry about the superstition, I got the cot, buggy etc in the new year sales the first time I was pg and ds wasn't born until the end of May! My mum drives me mad with things like this, she goes around my house separating crossed knives etc - barmey.

I feel lousy today. I woke up feeling odd (headachey mostly), dh merrily went off to work and then I felt really ill taking ds to school and nearly passed out at the school gates. I would have felt like an idiot but I was too worried about passing out on the floor in a heap and how I was going to get dd home. In the end I managed to walk home but was very lightheaded and the edges of my visions kept going black, which was interesting. Fortunately we made it back to the house ok and then I rang dh who has arranged to work from home from the rest of the day. Hope everyelse is feeling better soon.

sophiewd · 16/04/2008 12:43

Veyr neat Ernest!

makecakesnotwar · 16/04/2008 13:06

929 messages- not long till new thread! PMSL at DH walking too fast- thought it was just mine!!

Must pack Vaseline for hospital. Meconium sounds vile...

Debs- I did test dog in moses basket when we first got it...re: maternity nurse, sort of wishing I had one only because I am rubbish at going without sleep, but will have mum and DH so don't need one (though have already floated idea with DH for when we get around to number 2...) The fact that I have been a maternity nurse and nanny does make everyone assume I will be super mum and need no help, and that worries me as I'll have to live up to everyone's expectations. In reality I am of course a mere mortal and first time mum who will struggle and worry just like everyone else. I'll probably do a worse job!!!

Right- off for a nap- dog woke me at 2.30 and it took me two hours to get back to sleep.

ktpie · 16/04/2008 13:16

Sybil - hope you are starting to feel better now.

I've had all sorts of comments from the in laws about getting stuff ready too early, I thought I had left it all pretty late. I guess in their day there wouldn't have been such a choice so they wouldn't have had to spend weeks agonising on the internet over which pram to buy! Plus as you may have noticed I am a bit of a bargain hunter and you have to take your time over that.

bitofadramaqueen · 16/04/2008 13:18

Hi everyone, I've heard all the same superstitions as everyone else. I think it's def a generational thing (that will hopefully die out). I've got quite shirty with people who've warned me off having anything in the house/telling people I was pregnant before 3 months. People can be a bit thoughtless and various family members have come out with these superstitions; it makes me feel like they think if only I hadn't told them I was pregnant last year before 3 months I wouldn't have had a mc, or if anything went wrong now it would be my own fault because I've got a cot up!

Sorry, bit ranty - can you tell I get a bit worked up about so called superstition? I dont mind other people being superstitious but I wish they didn't feel the need to spread it around .

Anyone else starting to get super paranoid now the end is nigh? I've got 9 1/2 weeks still to go and am starting to really worry about the things that can go wrong. The baby is usually hyper when I first wake up but I didn't feel it move till about 9am today. I was beside myself with worry. I've also been having wierd dreams about things going wrong . Please tell me this is just normal! Just bought some chocolate and that usually makes the baby (and mummy) lively .

On a seperate note we went to look at a nursery this morning! Quite liked it, but need to view a few others to compare it to I think.

bitofadramaqueen · 16/04/2008 13:21

Oh re new thread title, what about Due in June 08 - sod the creme eggs, it's nearly time for the chilled glass of wine with brie and pate or something along those lines? (It's certainly what I'm looking forward to).

nettiehay · 16/04/2008 13:24

I'm looking forward to a medium rare steak with blue cheese sauce - and any wine that doesn't give me heartburn!

Rolf · 16/04/2008 13:55

DQ - very normal, IME, to have worries like that. Still horrid though.

Sybil - hope you're feeling better now.

When I had DD I didn't get anything ready for her. I waited until she'd been born before I asked DH to get the baby stuff out of storage. It was all a bit of a panic though (for him ). It all coincided with some work crisis - as always - and when he came to see me in hospital on the 3rd day post natally (milk just come in, horrid open ward, recovering from PPH) and I asked him if he'd got the baby things he huffed and puffed and said I was putting far too much pressure on him and couldn't I just wait. I haven't let him forget it!

I don't think I'll be as nervous this time but I still haven't got round to giving him the list of everything we need. There will be things we'll need to buy, like mattresses and a buggy board.

thegreenfairy · 16/04/2008 14:24

Re superstitions, I do think they stem from a time when far higher numbers of babies didn't make it, and people clung to every little charm/ belief as a way of allowing themselves to be more hopeful.

So, I have basically got everything and don't feel worried about that at all.

Obviously, if the baby starts to do anything different I worry - but I think that's understandable! Normally she only gets the hiccups for a minute or so but last night it went on for an age and I actually started to worry. Then I rolled onto the other side and they stopped within a few seconds! All that panic about nothing!

tassisssss · 16/04/2008 15:23

Hey mellymel, what did you get up to in Aberdeen? We lived there for about 13 years and still go back regularly to visit friends. Love it there. Shame it rained.

We're currently on holiday in the republic of ireland. Very chilled out and lazy though my pelvis took about 2 days to recover from the journey.

As for getting baby stuff gathered, I'm itching to get all our stuff out of the loft and washed and sorted. Need to move dd in with her big brother to clear baby's area. I got a double nipper off ebay the other week and have had lots of fun pushing my 2 round in that!

that vaseline tip sounds great...though i tend to let dh or my mum deal with as many of the first nappies as possible (nice for them to be involved you understand!)

ktpie · 16/04/2008 15:50

DQ - I know what you mean about being paranoid, I seemed to go through a phase where my paranoia level went down for a while but now it seems to be going back up, if that makes sense!

splodgesmum · 16/04/2008 16:10

Hi guys, can I join you? My first baby is due on 22nd June - I start mat leave on 2nd May and I can't wait!

Slowly starting to get things ready and collect stuff for the baby - and dh is desperately trying to get all the decorating done as I'm incapacitated with SPD!

Look forward to lots of baby chat in the next few weeks.

katyjo · 16/04/2008 16:20

Welcome splodgesmum Poor you suffering with SPD, we have a few suffers on this thread, so hopefully someone to chat. Is splodge your bump?

BQ I keep worrying, esp in the morning I sometimes don't feel movements for an hour or so, but I usually get anxious and poke the baby a bit, well I think I'm rubbing its bottom - but who knows. It is totally normal to worry, but if you are ever in any doubt just phone the hospital, they won't call you paranoid, its what they are there for.

I am at work but can't seem to find the motivation to do much, I think I have a serious mumsnet addiction!

makecakesnotwar · 16/04/2008 16:36

Addict here too katyjo- something to do with being housebound I guess.

Welcome splodgesmum- you might have guessed I am a fellow SPD sufferer. Send my sympathies- it is evil!

Was trying to think of new thread title along the lines of 'wish I hadn't eaten so many creme eggs because now I've got to push a creme egg filled baby out' but it's not really working.

Re: superstition...it didn't matter if they didn't have everything ready, the dad could do it whilst they spent 5-10 days 'recovering' in hospital! Given that I will probably be home before the day is out, I've got everything ready (can't trust DH with shoppping for this stuff!)

mellymell · 16/04/2008 16:50

tassissss - went to a place called Edzell, near Montrose, but we flew into Aberdeen and picked up a Phil and Ted pram from an Aberdeener which we bought off Ebay (for a major discount) while we were there. Had a smashing time. Rather embarrassed myself with complete preghead by forgetting any photo id for the plane for myself or the baby - had to throw myself (carefully) on the mercy of the check-in desk!

Hiya spoldgesmum

Terrifying to think that I have less than 7 weeks to go before DS2 makes an entry. So much to do, so stuff superstition!

sophiewd · 16/04/2008 17:01

Hello splodgesmum fellow SPD sufferer here very lucky though as DH at home all the time (we run a business together) so I can get lots of rest and he looks after our 2 year old vandal.

bitofadramaqueen · 16/04/2008 17:45

Hi everyone, just a quick post - glad I'm not the only one who is a little bit paranoid . Post-chocolate baby dramaqueen (or king) is very lively!

Welcome splodgesmum - you're due the same day as me! Am a bit jealous your mat leave starting so soon, but as you're suffering with SPD I reckon your need to finish soon is greater than mine! You'll get plenty of chat on here - we never shut up. Crikey, how bad will it be when we're all on mat leave ?

josey · 16/04/2008 19:11

Hi everyone been trying to catch up but had to give up half way through will try again later.

Weekend was hard going at the funeral and being away from home....ended up with me taking a strange turn on Monday and warned by my MW to behave and rest or she is admitting me to hospital...On MOnday I was blown up like a ballon and having contractions with a breech baby....yesterday I had the start of a show and today back at the clinic im all back to normal and baby has flipped and is head down and I have dropped slightly...So im on my best behaviour...and bump is 112cms

Ernest I like Edward and Jennifer as well.

We are going for Olivia Margaret...I perfer Livia but we have agreed that it will be Olivia and then I can call her what I like really.

Cant remember who asked about Libby and Zach but these names are on the birth register I went through my local one online for name ideas....It doesnt matter anymore I dont think...My nephew just has an initial as a middle name.

Upsidedowncake · 16/04/2008 19:38

Hi there

Forgot to say that I've been feeling a lot of movement in the last 24 hours, including some that felt very odd. Well the doctor says that my baby is now head-down, having been transverse, so it obviously did quite a bit of turning around in the last day. I also suddenly look a lot bigger as well!

Sorry that we have yet more SPD people.

Sybil, how are you feeling now? Perhaps you should see the doctor if you are having trouble with your vision?

Welcome, splodgesmum, I'm due 22 June too, like you and Dramaqueen. But I'm expecting to be late ... DQ and Splodge, where are your babies at the mo'?

Greenfairy, LOL at your DH imagining that wet towels etc just picked themselves up.

Ernest, you look great

Josey, Livia is a gorgeous name.

Had a bit of a row with DH last night as he encouraged his parents to go to Vienna for a few days when they are over here to look after DS when the baby comes. I asked him what we would do if I went into labour while they were away. DH said, 'Oh we'll take DS to hospital with us. I'm sure one of the midwives will look after him if I can't.' WTF!!!!

splodgesmum · 16/04/2008 19:42

Thanks for all your welcomes!

Katyjo - yes, splodge is my bump/baby, he's an IVF baby and splodge was what my dh called him when we came home from the clinic after embryo transfer clutching the scan picture of this 3 day old embryo (that looked like a splodge on the monitor!) nestling in my womb. I was very traumatised by the cycle cos I'd ended up with only one embryo after a diastrous egg collection and we'd lost 2 frozen embryos from a previous cycle in the same week. I didn't want to think about my baby or about being pg (both previous IVF cycles ended in m/c) and became very depressed. Dh adopted the nickname to try and help me bond - and 7 months later it's stuck!

MCNW, really sorry to hear you're suffering too - crap isn't it? Worse time is in bed - I'm averaging about 3 hours sleep a night hence the early start to mat leave!

sophie, sympathies to you too

dramaqueen - i'm not expecting baby to arrive on due date tbh! I was due on 22nd May but arrived on 1st June, so maybe I'll have a 1st July baby. Although my dh was due on 1st May and arrived on 22nd April - lots of 22s in there, is this a good sign?!!

Look forward to getting to know you all! And yes, I'm sure I'll be glued to this thing once mat leave starts - dh has made me promise to rest (not something I'm good at!) so my PC will be my salvation!

sophiewd · 16/04/2008 20:11

Josey - love the name Olivia, that was one of 3 we had for DD but have a nephew called Oliver and just decided it was too close, she is Edith

sophiewd · 16/04/2008 20:12

DH had to pick up my legs to put on the bed earlier, twas very painful., ( weeks tomorrow though and it is all over.

tassisssss · 16/04/2008 20:31

welcome to splogesmum, sorry about the SPD. I have it a bit too, though better than last time which has been a pleasant surprise as I expected it to be worse what with strapping great 19 month old to lift at various points through the day. we were supposed to be heading to the Highlands at the weekend (once home from Ireland) to see family there, but have had to cancel as the journey over here was so grim and the thought of 4-5 hours in the car each way is too much.

mellymel, I'm glad they let you in without photo ID! Great about your ebay bargain. I used to teach in a school pretty near Edzell!

josey, sounds like you've had an eventful few days. hope you can get some rest now.

anyone else not decided on names? we have a boy name that we like but no middle name decided and have 2 or 3 girls names but need to get it nailed soon!

i really need the sun to shine as I have some lovely summer maternity clothes from last time and I want to wear them!!

bitofadramaqueen · 16/04/2008 21:14

upsidedowncake - according to mw at last appt (2 weeks ago) the head was down, bum in the air and the legs curled to one side. Movements all in the same places so don't think there has been any movements. It's kind wierd because I get lots of movement low down and to my right hand side (near the top) but never get any movements on the left (except when I'm lying down on left-hand side). My bump is STILL lopsided - right hand side much bigger and belly button still looks like its been moved to the left.

While realistically I know that its unlikely that babydrama will pop out on 22nd, DH says if its anything like its mother it will pop out exactly on time! I was a very late baby and DH very very early so who knows.

I love Olivia btw - always secretly planned that as a name but DH has vetoed. Boo hiss.
