makecakes am with you on What to expect being crap -not got it out the cupboard this time... as I remember almost any week or month you picked you could expect your main symptom to be constipation....I daresay that is there in the 8th month, along with some of the special questions that they include in there real life guide

dylansmumplusone · 03/04/2008 15:52

lol makecakes at your 'testing' efforts. your poor pooch!

had a playdate for ds at corams fields today and it was lovely. such a beautiful day out. he fell from quite high right on his head but it was on the sand so apparently looked a lot worse than it was because 2 mins later he was off again, trying his usual escape manouvers (sp?).

this little bean has not stopped moving for 2 days. sometimes it feels like hiccups but mostly just hard kicks or successive fluttering kicks and punches. i really hope he sleeps more when he's born than he does now!

hi looneytune! ds LOVED his amby bed i can't recommend it enough, it was terribly sad when he got too big for it but he only took a couple weeks to adjust. i can't wait to use it again for this bubs.

debinaustria · 03/04/2008 16:12

Hi Looneytune - nice to see you back

I'm in touch with Ernest and she's Ok but so busy packing and getting ready for the move, that there's no time to post on here, never mind read everyone's messages!!!

Never made it to the babyshop - too knackered after the early morning, did food chopping, bought a new tumbledrier and some kitchen cupboards though - oh yes, and some muslins and flannels for baby from Ikea.

bitofadramaqueen · 03/04/2008 18:08

hi everyone, back from mw appointment. Got my bump measured and its between 28 and 29 cm so spot on as I'll be 29 weeks come this weekend. Baby's head is where it should be and everything else ok. Had some routine blood tests (but wont get the results till next friday).

She still really wittered on though. Half an hour late for the appt and she wittered on about her DH, her child, the weather and god knows what else. Eventually we did get round to talking about me and my pregnancy and she was generally helpful, but FFS I wish she'd have shut up a bit. Ah, at least I can be thankful for the lack of continual care and she def wont be at the hospital when I give birth .

Sorry you didn't make it to the baby shop deb, hope you not feeling to cheated!

makecakesnotwar · 03/04/2008 22:23

Good friend just called- she had 12 week scan today and has been given urgent CVS next week...not looking good. Very hard to know what to say especially when I have been complaining today about hertburn and lack of sleep. Could you keep your fingers crossed for her?

Night.

thegreenfairy · 04/04/2008 04:53

makescakes - sorry to hear about your friend. Just popped on because I can't bloody sleep but suddenly seems like a v minor moan. Will be thinking of her

debinaustria · 04/04/2008 06:17

Morning everyone, keeping my fingers crossed for your friend Makecakes

Greenfairy , you beat me to it this morning!!! Did you manage to get back to sleep? It took me ages to get to sleep last night, but then again I had nodded off twice on the settee yesterday!!

How's everyone else? If you're out at work - at least it's Friday, those of us at home with children - no school run tomorrow.

Got to do some major tidying up this morning, the place is a tip.

debinaustria · 04/04/2008 06:31

Oh... My.....God...., only 9 weeks to go, I am the proud owner of the following baby items
muslin cloths
flannels
clothes
breast pump

this is what I still need
car seat
cot
cot bedding
pushchair
breast pads
maternity pads
changing mats(upstairs and down)
cotton wool
more nappies
emergency newborn dummies
goodie store for me in hospital
toiletries for hospital
cotton nightie
etc, etc, etc, .......YIKES

Today I will order the pushchair and car seat, think I'd better!!

What have you got and what do you still need?

sophiewd · 04/04/2008 08:22

Morning Deb

Still need
nappies
maternity pads and a couple of nightshirts for hospital

We still have everything from Edie's birth so pretty well sorted, just waiting for the car seat to turn up.

aberdeenhiker · 04/04/2008 08:22

9 weeks is starting to sound soon -

I've got everything still from DS but

  1. car seat for newborn (DS still in his convertible one)
  2. double buggy
  3. some gender neutral newborn clothes (I was convinced DS was a boy and only brought boys clothes to the hospital)
  4. newborn nappies and cotton wool
  5. maternity pads (oh joy)
  6. tens machine (will rent one).

That doesn't sound too bad - except all the stuff for the LO is in the loft and covered in dust and DS's puke (he was a very very puky baby).

makecakes - fingers crossed for your friend...

nettiehay · 04/04/2008 12:27

We've got very little in the way of equipment, but have been given oodles of cute outfits!

Re: the birth ball, we had one at home anyway (to help with my occasional bad knee/back) and I am already fidning it a godsend. In the evening I kneel on the floor and rest on the ball, rolling forwards and backwards - it is the only way I can get comfy - the sofa is now DP's domain!

Wasn't able to get hold of the m/w yesterday (didn't try too hard, I must admit) as I think I had calmed down a bit by the time I'd been on here and spoken to my friend - but will try to get hold of her today, as pain is still there intermittently and I can't get rid of it!

PS... Almost had withdrawal symptoms when mumsnet wasn't working earlier - but I got heaps done at work

makecakesnotwar · 04/04/2008 12:29

Thanks everyone for thinking of my friend.

Had yet another crap night last night as dog is ill and spent half the night awake with her...DH away of course! Saw my first nursery today- a few doors down from our (fingers crossed) new house, now have to head down to the coast to supervise new flooring for kitchen. When am I going to get a nap in??

Re: stuff still to get. I need:

nursing bras- to early to get measured
moving date (will need to buy more nursery furniture for new house as has no fitted storage like here, but not ordering until I know we are moving.)

Feeling a little smug, but I am a first timer, with a touch of control freak disorder.

Have a good weekend.

debinaustria · 04/04/2008 12:31

Hi everyone, a day without Mumsnet , I wonder if all of you at work have got more done today??

Well I've done it - I've finally ordered my car seat, pushchair, carrycot , parasol(never had one of those in the UK but it gets hotter here), and raincover.

So they can go off my list of things to buy but I have also remembered a changing bag so that needs to go on the list!!

sophiewd · 04/04/2008 12:33

Changing bag - thanks Deb

PregnantPenguin · 04/04/2008 12:34

Makecakes - A friend who conceived a few weeks before me had a LO that stopped growing at 4 weeks 6 months ago. Exactly the same thing happened to her again last week.

It really does put my moaning into perspective.

Deb - I am using your list there to work out what I still need:

muslins - Still not quite sure what I need these for but everyone tells me I need lots.
flannels
cot
cot bedding
changing mats(upstairs and down)
cotton wool
nappies
emergency newborn dummies - What are these?
goodie store for me in hospital - incl earplugs! Bought myself some 'external noise reduction' earphones at the weekend, that should do.
toiletries for hospital
cotton nightie
tens machine (rent from boots?)

Please keep adding everyone - otherwise I'll forget everything!

Started a wish list on amazon.com for gifts and ended up putting down the most inane things (cat nets, anyone) just because they were quite cheap for people to buy. So don't judge me, I'm sharing these so that you can all laugh with me, not at me!
Silly Eg 1
Silly Eg 2
Silly eg 3
Silly eg 4
This ones for me!
[Embarassed penguin waddles away to hide her face.....]

PP:

Muslins have a multitude of uses and you truly cannot have too many.....they mop up sick, protect your clothes, cover you if breastfeeding, cover baby if in the sun, cover suspect surfaces if you need to put baby down, can be used as emergency nappies, to clean glasses, mop up spills and strangle your MIL (last one was a joke!)...HTH!!

Dummies are also very useful...even if you swear you have no intention of using them get a couple (and sterilise) just in case of emergency..have been told that the sound of your baby crying will really get to you in the first couple of weeks.

I have a 'buying' list I put together for a client if you want me to email it to you....

makecakesnotwar · 04/04/2008 12:41

LOVE the bubble maker BTW

Rolf · 04/04/2008 12:52

Love the bubble maker!

Last day of the school holidays today

bitofadramaqueen · 04/04/2008 12:57

[dramaqueen sits in corner, too shell-shocked to put together a list].

Hi everyone - I have got lots but still lots to get (avoiding putting it all down on one list though) .

I've got lots of muslins though. I did buy a pack from the nappy lady website and they are fab (and very big). They can also be used as nappies on babies until they are big enough to use size 1 cloth nappies.

Still recovering from appt with mw. Forgot to mention how gleefully she pointed out that I was 'expanding' and the delight she took in saying that my belly button was ready to pop.

mellymell · 04/04/2008 12:58

Another thing that's useful - bulk load of little bibs - useful for breast feeding when your DO 'possets' (ie sicky burp).

needahand · 04/04/2008 13:18

Hi ladies

Gosh you are all so organised. I am only starting to thing that perhaps I should get my hospital bag ready and get the stuff we had for DD out. I did indulge and bought some newborn pj yesterday as I think all the newborn clothes we had last time had been lent to us.

RE birth ball I have been bouncing on mine since the beginning of my pregnancy but then I am paranoid about getting the baby in the right position as DD was sort of back to back

Didn't do much work this morning due to mumsnet withdawal (even when I don't post, I lurk)I just couldn't concentrate until I h ad my fix. Sad or what! Was manically clicking refreshed and even erred on netmums and read some horror birth story which to be honest I probably shoudn't have.

Not sleeping very well either and suspect I am anemic too. Waiting for blood test.

katyjo · 04/04/2008 13:23

Glad someone else is disorganised needahand I got all old baby clothes out of the attic last weekend and I'm slowly washing them all, and I was thinking I'm organised! I was 32 weeks yesterday so I think I better get my ass in gear! Still need to pack a hospital bag, get a buggy board and we are decorating ds's new room, may still paint the nursery if I have time.
I am feeling really depressed now!

sophiewd · 04/04/2008 13:30

Muslins - ended up to be DD's comforter, blankie - so much easier than a toy

Dummies - research says that they help in the reduction fo SIDS, did try with DD but she turned out to be a thumb sucker

PregnantPenguin · 04/04/2008 13:32

Makecakes - that list sounds great, yes please! I'm not sure what this CAT thing is all about, but have updated my settings so I can CAT or be CATTED...is that the same as email?

A couple of questions for those that have been through all this before please:

Toiletries for hospital - Is it worth treating myself and getting some really nice stuff? Or will I be so sore, etc, that unperfumed simple stuff would be best?

Nappies - I am planning on eco disposables for the first week or two, then moving on to 'real' nappies. Most real nappies come in Size 1 and Size 2. But how long do Size 1 last? There's a 'nappy laundry' nearby and I was wondering if it was financially better to use them until LO has grown out of size 1's (and whilst I'm still finding my feet). I'm assuming size 2 last until potty training...

Feeling very green and niave....

Dramaqueen - what a sensitive midwife...?!? Can't think of a suitably sarcastic response, but hope you did at the time!

OP posts:
bitofadramaqueen · 04/04/2008 13:41

It's fair to see she got a bit of a look from pp - though was too speechless to be too sarcastic.

Not sure re: how long stage 1 nappies last, I guess it depends on how quickly the baby grows. I've bought a set of size 1 tots bots which we can keep to use if we're mad enough to go through all this again, but I think the most popular ones tend to have decent resell value on ebay etc so you can recoup some of your outlay. I'd recommend doing the questionnaire on the nappy lady website. You fill in the questionnaire, they give you some tailored advice and put you in touch with a nappy lady advisor who you can ask questions to/get advice etc. They're really helpful and no obligation to buy. You could then look at the cost of stage 1 vs the cost of a nappy laundry.
