Babes in Scotland this year - shall we have our own thread?

whinegums · 10/03/2008 12:18

Hi, I can't see any up to date antenatal threads for mums to be in Scotland, anyone want to join in this one? I think there are a few Scottish mums on the due in June thread, so I wondered if we should have our very own for all of this year's Scottish crop?

Klaw · 15/03/2008 17:05

your settings do not allow me to see your profile

dizzydixies · 15/03/2008 17:07

why not, how can becky see them and you can't
tis all very strange

Klaw · 15/03/2008 17:23

have you got it so only friends can see your profile and you've not added me to friends list?

Can't think of any other reason that might apply....

dizzydixies · 15/03/2008 17:30

I didn't know you could put it to 'only friends' and if it was I've never met becky before today so how would that work - sorry Klaw, am still a bit inept at all this lol

try again and if it doesn't work I'll have a fiddle with it lol

Klaw · 15/03/2008 17:38

oh, your yellow board thingy is there now, shall go have a shufty......

soph28 · 15/03/2008 17:53

Jennylee- CONGRATULATIONS! I didn't know you were having another- you must be thrilled! How is ds about it all?

minipinkscottish- can't believe you're having no.6! Wow- you are amazing! Are you going to have any more? My dd will be 2 on 18th July so that's a great day for having a baby!

So of all the homebirths. I would love one, I always opt for the absolute minimum stay in hospital- so far has been less than 24hrs each time. However, 1st time needed a drip to speed up contractions, 2nd time I was induced and both times have needed consultant to do my stitches as midwives couldn't, and had a catheter last time (sigh), so I don't think a HB is a good idea for me

Just had ds's 3rd birthday party this afternoon. Am exhausted now. He couldn't wait for the birthday cake and after everyone had had a piece he sat up at the table and finished the whole cake- he must've had about 1/3 of it LOL. Will post a photo when I upload them.

Jennylee · 15/03/2008 19:46

Thanks Soph, yes and only will be a nine and half year age gap lol. We are really happy and ds is happy too he is interested in the whole thing, remember how interested he was in your little one and wanted to check her for you, I think he will be the same and he is a bit older now so he has settled back into school and back to normal.

Your ds's birthday sounded fun, am glad for you and hope it all goes well with the new baby.

Jennylee · 15/03/2008 22:00

All those years ago I had an awful experience of the maternity ward at St Johns, the room where you give birth was fine the midwives were nice in there, but the ward was hell the widwives were patronising and dismissive and it was too hot noisy and busy. The food was awful, have things improved? does anyone have an opinion they could share? The thought of being stuck on the ward again is just off putting. Does anyone know how soon they let you escape, I mean go home after a 'normal' delivery?

Klaw · 16/03/2008 00:04

Jennylee, I know I'm a bit biased as I plan to have a HWBAC if we ever get around to ttc again, but have you thought seriously about Homebirth? check out Edinburgh & Lothians Home Birth Support Group and Birth Resource centre

minipinkscottish · 16/03/2008 07:36

Jennylee - Klaw is right - look into home birth! Where I am it is becoming more and more popular and the care you get is wonderful. Women are designed to give birth to babies and I think we do it better in our own surroundings. I was induced for ds1 and ds2 and also had ds3 and dd in hospital. Although I didn't have any particularly bad experiences I always felt so removed from my family and couldn't really relax till I got home. With my last ds the home birth was planned and I was so realxed and happy... Look into it...doesn't do any harm to ask ...good luck

whinegums · 16/03/2008 10:02

Morning everyone.

Mcchesers - have you signed up for the parent and baby clubs and stuff - Boots, Tesco, Huggies, Pampers, etc etc etc? You should have had a Bounty bag from your midwife, that contains a voucher, in the book I think, for another one - if you pick it up from Asda, it has more coupons in it (than if you get it from Boots), including £5 off almost any of their baby stuff. And if you sign up to Bounty online they send you another voucher for the same bag, so you can get it twice.

Try this link as well, it contains most of the links to the sign ups, although some of them are now out of date:

forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=78227

I've had coupons, samples, feeding spoons, a few little toys, booklets, etc. It means I'll probably get a load of junk mail as well, so if that drives you nuts, you may not want to do it - I just chuck most of it in the (recycling) bin.

Tesco had some good baby bargains this week - all Tommee Tippee stuff like breast pumps, pads, bottles, sterilisers, half price, reduced clothes, etc - I got a newborn set of sleepsuit, vest, hat, socks and scratch mitts for £2.50.

I am always on the look out for a bargain! I'm already finding out that this baby lark is expensive!

So excited that we will be seeing some new arrivals very soon - loads of luck to the ladies at the top of the list xxx

TheApprentice · 16/03/2008 14:09

Jennylee, things were certainly better than that in St Johns last year when I had ds, although admittedly it was at a very quiet time (Ds born New Years Day - no planned sections, inductions going on).

I found the day staff really lovely, but one or two of the night staff were a bit intimidating and tended to do that grab your boob without asking first thing!

The food was a bit hit and miss, my dh would go to Livingston M and S and bring me lovely stuff!

So hopefully things will be better for you if you do end up there.

TheApprentice · 16/03/2008 14:14

Also, I understand that after a normal delivery they let you go after a day, although legally I think its about 8 hours is all you have to stay (I have a friend who left after this amount of time). AFter a section 2 or 3 days, although I had to stay 5 due to complications. It is still v hot there and goodness knows what it will be like in August when I am due!

Should say though that as ds was the first baby born in 2007 we were completely spoilt - the nurses there club together to buy gifts for the first baby and we were overwhelmed by their generosity, so there are some kind hearts there!

TheApprentice · 16/03/2008 14:17

Just seen JennyLee you are due just a week after me - maybe we'll see each other in there!

Jennylee · 16/03/2008 15:26

Thank Klaw and minipinkscottish, I had a completely normal delivery first time but not sure I'm up to homebirth I'd have to give it some thought.

TheApprentice thank for your reply, maybe we will see each other West lothian can be a small world sometimes!

Klaw · 16/03/2008 17:56

Well then Jennylee, check out the links that I gave you, there's no obligation to plan a homebirth if you contact a support group, they can help you to decide if it's for you or not. I can't see why you shoudln't plan a HB, after all you can transfer in at any time and you sound like a perfect candidate, and if you have a problem free pregnancy the statistics show that it is probably the safest option for you.

But if you do not feel safe at home (regardless of stats) then you would labour better at the hospital perhaps...

It's YOUR decision, I would support you in whatever decision that is.

expatinscotland · 16/03/2008 17:58

Just a quick check in!

I'm north of Dunoon in Argyll, BearMama .

Won't be giving birth here, though.

Nearest consultant led hospital is in Paisley, and for me at least, I feel that's too far to consider a homebirth safe, especially because we have to use a ferry to get to consultant-based hospital AND I prefer epidurals.

mumofdjandpandbump · 16/03/2008 21:03

HI all

This weekend we told all our family and friends that we are expecting baby 3.

As the youngest is only crawling no one saw it coming and they were utterly shocked but happy .

My eldest who has just turned 4 said the baby HAS to be called potato

I have had 2 sections and am reading into a trial of labour and vaginal birth....and looking into a doula...hopefully a trainee as money is sooo tight (only dh working)

Am feeling wee movements am 14 weeks plus 2 now

aGalChangedHerName · 16/03/2008 21:15

Hi all you pg scottish mummys, very of you all!!!

If any of you are planning/having a homebirth i have an unused La Bassine pool(which i sadly never used) if anyone wants it??

I am in West Lothian. Had dd1 in St Johns in 2004 and dd2 in 2006 and the mw's were great in labour suite both times. Postnatal ward in 2004 was awful. Left on my own with crying baby all night after not having slept for over 3 days. Stayed in labour ward and got away early after dd2 to avoid postnatal in 2006.

Would plan for a quick discharge if you can possibly manage it!!

Good luck to you all xx

Klaw · 16/03/2008 21:19

mumofdjandpandbump have you checked out Scottish Doula Network as well as Doula UK?

Where are you? I might know someone local to you...

Paranoid1stTimer · 17/03/2008 08:17

Hello everyone - nice to have loads more people on the Scottish thread!!! Good luck to everyone at all different stages.

Well, I am still here (as everyone in the WORLD keeps asking!!!) "Ye no hud that baby yet???" Well, yest actually and I just loved being this huge I have stuffed a duvet up my jumper. Just left the baby home alone... AARGGHH!!!!

Due date was only Saturday there so I am not really that far over - especially for the first but a lot of girls I know went a week or more early with their 1st babies so I guess people are thinking I am s-l-o-w with this one. I don't feel quite as stressed now that I have an induction date since the end is in sight but I really don't wanna be induced so have kindly asked LO to release the hormone and get outta there! It is sooooooooo uncomfortable now but there's no imminent signs of labour starting so monthlymayhem and bearmama you may well have your LO's in your arms and I will still be here posting away!!!!

Good luck to everyone.

Morning all

Im in central scotland near Stirling Klaw

(hoping you live near here tee hee)

northeastmummy · 17/03/2008 12:04

Hang in there P1stT - it won't be long now ... although I'm sure every day feels like an eternity. If you can bear walking, I think the gravity is a real help so it might be worth getting out each day if you can? Might take your mind of it for a wee while too .
