Babes in Scotland this year - shall we have our own thread?

whinegums · 10/03/2008 12:18

Hi, I can't see any up to date antenatal threads for mums to be in Scotland, anyone want to join in this one? I think there are a few Scottish mums on the due in June thread, so I wondered if we should have our very own for all of this year's Scottish crop?

jaq39 · 14/03/2008 11:01

I know what you mean about the windows! Its very sunny in Edinburgh and my windows are shocking, but its still far to cold to go outside and clean them!!

bobsmum · 14/03/2008 11:07

Hi Baiyu - I started out as 5th May according to my dates, but the scan put me back to April 25th.

April 26th is dh's birthday so I'm trying to plan an early something for him, just in case the celebrations get overtaken by someone else's birthday

It's also the date of the Baby Show at the SECC and I'm desperate to get some bargains there before baby turns up. Need to get my nappies and wraps and some disposables for the first few weeks.

I figured - what better place to go into labour?? Think of the freebies!! And entire stands and stalls brimming with midwives! I could snaffle a TENS or jump into a birth pool and get a free massage. Might be a bit public though

Anyone else planning on going to the Baby Show at the SEC? It's a great day, but only if you can get hold of free tickets. Otherwise it works out quite pricey with parking and ticket fees. I think Totsbots nappies will have free tickets again this year. Other companies too, but I haven't seen any yet.

bobsmum · 14/03/2008 11:08

Gorgeous here too - the sun is indeed shining bright on Loch Lomond and the banks are very very bonny Gorgeous views - the mountains are snowy too - I could be on the continent!

Paranoid1stTimer · 14/03/2008 11:45

Hi fellow Scots - I have been looking out for a Scottish thread too since a few of my posts regarding Princess Royal in Glasgow have only received a couple of responses...

Anyway, I am due.... TOMORROW!!! Yikes!

Have taken the brass neck to add myself to the top of the list... Sorry MonthlyMayhem but don't worry, bet you "go" first - my LO has gone from 4/5ths engaged last week to having a mad tantrum and wriggling itself breech this week. He/she has only just settled back head down but keeps turning transverse/back to back after being "ceph" for WEEKS!!! Must be a girl!!!

Paranoid1stTimer · 14/03/2008 11:48

bobsmum aaaah - I would love to live by yon bonnie banks... You are very lucky! My local wildlife consists of young herds of native neds who graze on Buckie and "lock horns" with the other native wildlife of an evening...

bobsmum · 14/03/2008 11:54

Ha ha Paranoid - the problem is during the summer when all the neds drive up to the car park down the road and leave their Buckie on my beach. Ok so it's not really my beach, but for most of the year it might as well be.

I'm too lumbering and massive to make it down the slope to get to the shore atm - can't wait till I can pop baby in sling and picnic by the water soon - bliss!

I'm going to the Princess Royal and had dd there 2.5 years ago - not sure if I saw your thread - what do you want to know? I had a good experience there which is why I definitely wanted to go back this time

northeastmummy · 14/03/2008 11:56

Oooooo ... welcome P1stT. How exciting to have another baby due any minute!! I can't wait for them to start arriving .

Saying that, I was round at a friends last night saying hello to their 3 day old baby and it brought it all flooding back. I think I'm happy for this one to stay put for a bit longer!

bobsmum - it sounds gorgeous where you are. It's lovely and sunny here too but the view isn't quite as tranquil. Saying that, when I was in the back garden this morning I could quite happily have got some chairs out and stayed there. It really is that lovely today .

northeastmummy · 14/03/2008 11:58

I'd just like to point out that my post crossed with yours bobsmum. The neds and their buckie don't sound so gorgeous .

bobsmum · 14/03/2008 11:59

DO you think I can risk hanging the washing out? Or will that make it rain??

bobsmum · 14/03/2008 12:02

lol nemummy

I'll be on ned patrol during the night feeds again this summer.

Last time I was feeding dd in the night a ned was dancing naked in our garden dancing around our bonfire. I missed him but MIL (who was on granny duty) saw him when she got up to go to the loo!

Police caught him later the next day. Am hoping for more naked neds in my garden this summer, but will set Buckie and Bru traps to lead them away - maybe a small pit to catch 'em in

northeastmummy · 14/03/2008 12:11

And there was me imagining baby deer and badgers wandering through your garden in the night! You've shattered my illusions .

If you make it rain, I'll be even sadder ...

bobsmum · 14/03/2008 13:13

WE have baby deer, badgers, foxes, pheasants, slowworms etc etc too, but none of them like hardcore dance or White Lightning. Nor do their chosen mode of transportation have blue neon underlighting or go faster stripes

Paranoid1stTimer · 14/03/2008 13:52

Ha ha haaaa bobsmum - excellent!!! What is with the underlighting??? And the rest... Ah well, at least we have the joys of trying to make sure our bumps don't turn out like that!!!

I posted months ago just a general query on PRM but since then a lot of people have said it is good but the food is cr@p. I expect that from hospital anyway.

I think I just want to know a minute by minute foresight of exactly what is going to happen to me and my little one which is obviously not going to happen. I WAS really nervous about going into hospital but I have had a few problems with bleeding and such like over my pregnancy and now that the LO has decided to do some last minute relocation, I have been told I will have to keep a close eye on it's movement.

Needless to say, I don't mind going into hospital now cos I just want the baby out asap because it is impossible to tell what is going on with it in there!!! Then once it is out I will prob be hovering over it every 2 secs to make sure it is breathing!!! Everyone is telling me to relax and not be so para but I can't help it - but hey, we'll just have to see how it all goes I guess!

carolcupcake · 14/03/2008 14:04

Hi, I'm moving to just outside Glasgow at Easter and our second baby is due end of August. Our first baby will be 1yr old in July so we have been busy!

bobsmum · 14/03/2008 14:06

Stock up on Mars Bars and you'll be fine - the food is just canteen food - stodgy and boring, but the dining room is only a few steps away from the ward and I liked the excuse to get up and walk around knowing dd was fine in her little cot.

Stay at home for as long as you think you can. When I went in, they sent dh home as I wasn't in "established" labour and I was given a bed in an antenatal ward. they called dh back in after I couldn't keep quiet anymore and sure enough, by that time I was about 5/6 cm.

It's always very busy, but not understaffed. Expect to wait for help if you buzz or need pain relief in the post natal ward - but not that long considering it's a city centre hospital.

Loads of accurate breast feeding advice (hard to some by in some hospitals!), but you might need to ask for it rather than expect to be shown what to do. Pester the m/ws if you're not sure about anything - even at night time.

Visiting hours are good and we found them quite flexible (within reason) if you smile a lot and pull on the heart strings. My MIL was due to drive back down south when dd was 2/3 hours old, but they let her in to see dd even though it wasn't official visiting

And best of all - I found it really really clean and fresh!

Paranoid1stTimer · 14/03/2008 14:28

Thats really good to hear - a lot of comments I have had about PRM are that the MW's don't have any time for you, you will defo get MRSA and the showers/toilets are disgusting...

I think it must be the case that for people who go in, have their baby's and get home with no problems, they don't really think about it enough to actually post anything to say they had a positive experience - it's usually only bad news that travel isn't it?

I heard that you can pay a fiver and you get a wee tv for beside your bed? Not that I think I will have time to watch tv!!! It's just that I have been told since I have Group B Strep, the baby will have to be monitored for 24-48hrs to make sure it hasn't developed any problems and in case it has to have antibiotics...

I have been in the day care section a few times anyway and everyone seemed nice enough. I guess it just depends on who the staff are on the day and how stressed they are etc. Just trying to be a bit more laid back about it all now cos I stress too much!!! As you can prob tell by my MASSIVE posts and silly username!!!

bobsmum · 14/03/2008 14:39

I had my ds in Watford General - now that was a hell hole!! It was on one of those expose documentaries a couple of months back because it was sooooo filthy. I was in for 4/5 days after a section and the ward was never cleaned or even swept.

I do think you sometimes have to ask for stuff rather than assume. If you sit quietly and hope someone comes, chances are they won't - you need to make a fuss in a nice way

They are busy, but as patronising as it sounds a smile goes a loooong way with the staff. Some of the mums last time at the PRM seemed to expect 5 star hotel service and didn't seem to realise that there were probably 20 or so (at least) other new mums in exactly the same position. I found that just being polite to everyone worked wonders - and often got cups of tea brought too

Yp - teeny TVs by the bed - about the size of a CD - with earphones. Phone and radio too. Cupboards by the beds or under the cots are fully stocked with blankets and wee gowns for baby, nappies, cotton wool etc.

Midwives were all lovely and everyone seemed to have a good sense of humour which I guess is essential when you're run off your feet!

I had no problems with cleanliness when I was there, but I guess a pack of Dettol wipes and maybe nappy sacks for your sanitary towels in your hospital bag might put your mind at rest?

I had one shower/toilet per 4 mums - in the room rather than having to traipse along the corridor like I did with ds.

Sorry for the long post again. I'm actually quite looking forward to it all now - Ilike to be prepared and I always assume everyone else wants the same level of detail as I do

Paranoid1stTimer · 14/03/2008 14:55

Not at all - I love the long post replies cos I tend to get carried away myself. Thanks for the details - I had no idea you get your own wee cupboards with "supplies" in them. I know the hospital say they can supply nappies/cotton wool and the basics which is pretty good of them from what I have heard about other places but I thought it would be a case of having to go searching for them and pleading with staff for some extra meconium absorbing cotton wool when the 3 cotton wool balls they give you run out heh heh.

minipinkscottish · 14/03/2008 14:58

Hi again all!!

I am booked for my second home birth. Had first 4 in hosp, 2 in Aberdeen and 2 in Perth - no bad experiences but I have very quick labours and decided last time to give home birth a try. It was fantastic. My waters broke, I called midwife and dh and child minder and baby arrived 7 minutes after midwife got here - 40 minutes after waters broke -!! No problems and a great experience. We were all cuddled in as a family that night with all my own things around me - wonderful!! Hope it's the same this time!!

whinegums · 14/03/2008 16:11

Hi everyone, Paranoid1stTimer, how exciting!!!!!!

Has anyone given birth at SGH already - I'm booked in there, but getting more apprehensive and thinking about seeing if I can transfer to another hospital in Glasgow - would love to hear about anyone else's experiences.

monthlymayhem · 14/03/2008 18:34

I'm happy for you to take pole position

I've had a lovely day today. Went with DH to a play, pie and a pint at Oranor in Glasgow, then had a wee waddle round Kelvingrove museum, followed by an early dinner. Not the sort of thing we've normally got time for, but we thought we should get in a couple of 'dates' before baby arrives. I am now ready for a snooze on the sofa....

baiyu · 14/03/2008 20:48

Hello all, monthlymayhem sounds like my ideal afternoon, very jealous!

Thanks josey for the Raigmore info, I've heard good things from other people so I'm pretty happy about the idea of going there. My mum has an appointment there next week so I think i might chum her along and have a wee look around the maternity wards if they'll let me.

bobsmum they moved my dates back a week too, from the 15th to 7th of May, made it all seem much closer. Laughed a lot at the neds in your garden, I live beside Loch Shiel which most of the time is ned free but nearby Fort William is full of them! I'm such a wuss, the sight of a tracksuit makes me want to run however unthreatening their behaviour might be! An SECC labour sounds like a great idea! Just head to the stall with the most expensive and adorable baby things and beg freebies!

Good luck paranoid! Keep us posted. I hope everything is quick and goes smoothly for you.

Overdid it a bit today with a 3 hour hike, legs and back not happy but good for the head. My first stretchmarks have appeared... Not impressed! Hope everyone's having a great evening

dizzydixies · 15/03/2008 14:55

just watched the rugby arse at least we didn't get the wooden spoon, just, god bless the calcutta cup, arse

went for lovely 2hr walk this morning with dc, well dd1 was on her bike and dd2 in pram when not in the park but it was a lovely morning up here and although now shattered am glad we went

hope its nice where everyone else is too
