Babes in Scotland this year - shall we have our own thread?

whinegums · 10/03/2008 12:18

Hi, I can't see any up to date antenatal threads for mums to be in Scotland, anyone want to join in this one? I think there are a few Scottish mums on the due in June thread, so I wondered if we should have our very own for all of this year's Scottish crop?

mcchesers · 04/06/2008 23:15

Hey Whinegums..how long have you got to go now?
I think I had your nightmare MW for our last NHS class today. DH and I were so shocked at how dour she was after the nice lady we had for the other six weeks. Oh well, we have the NCT course this weekend thankfully to put a plaster on today's fiasco.

I go back to my MW tomorrow for a check up. Baby seems to be doing star kicks in my belly and everything is so tight. Has anyone from our list given birth at SGH? If so, I would really like to hear their experience. ok off to try and sleep.

whinegums · 04/06/2008 23:22

Hey up mcchesers, how's tricks? I've got 2-3 weeks to go, depending on whether I go from my scan date or the date I've calculated. Soon anyway!

Was the mw pregnant? And called Lisa? That'll be her if it was. I went to a bf workshop at Millbrae on Monday, was talking to some others who'd been at one of her classes too, and were equally horrified!! She is becoming notorious!

I had my tour of SGH a couple of weeks ago. Bit disappointed with how medical everything was - no nice birthing suites for us. Even the pool room doesn't seem particularly great. However, I doubt I'll care too much about the surroundings, and almost all of the mws I've met have been lovely. Fingers crossed not to get the one mentioned above (even though she wasn't nearly as bad in the second class, but I still think she'd be a nightmare) - and I had a pretty weird one at my check up a few weeks ago.

Have a good kip and catch up with you soon.

Hey Whinegums yep it was her. She had us all traumatized by the end and that was our last class. IKWYM about the southern..but it's not so bad really. I think you just have to bring in your own stuff and make it a nice experience. We're empowered by being able to say no thanks and see another midwife if the one we have is not simpatico with us. Woo hoo, you have't got long to go, how are you keeping?
I needed to walk off last night's debacle so we went to Silver burn for a bite to eat and a wander. Apparently scary spice had just left so there was a lot of chatter.

Poor DH was in shambles after last night, he is getting fed up with people telling him how crap it is to be a new parent..mostly by his own mum. We're just going to keep an open mind. Besides you won't be in hospital that long anyway and as long as your home is all set up and comfy for you and baby then nothing else matters. I know that I have a good attitude and can get through anything if I can crack a joke with my midwife.

minipinkscottish · 05/06/2008 10:10

It is not crap to be a new parent it is wonderful and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

It's hard at times but all worthwhile...why do some people have to be so negative

Hope everyone is well!! I have 6 weeks to go but have growth scan tomorrow to see if baby is even bigger So maybe sooner than I think xxxxxx

whinegums · 05/06/2008 10:14

Morning again mcchesers (and everyone else!). I have to say, that in the second class, mw from hell was the one reminding us that we can say no to stuff, and keep the docs away, so she did go up in my estimation.

I'm really well ta - I think I've been lucky, when I hear about some of the stuff others go through. What about you? I've started to get backache and bump ache, not surprising really, at least I can take it easy now.

I was at Silverburn yesterday as well, escaped before Scary Spice appeared in her undercrackers - bemused by why anyone would want to see cheap bird in cheap knickers, but hey ho.

Maybe DP's mum is setting him up to be pleasantly surprised. I have convinced myself that whole experience will be horrific - no disappointments if it is, and if it's better than that I'm on a winner!

Is anyone else booked in to the SGH?

Good luck with growth scan minipink - hope everything is ok.

WG- I'm ok just physically exhausted, acid reflux and crawling baby parts pushing all my guts out of the way. Really gets hard this bump and some of the braxton hicks are taking my breath away. I'm feeling it more in my knees than in my back. Maybe midwife from hell has stage fright? Going to see yet another random midwife today at 2pm. Hope she's nice.

Minkpink- good luck with your scan and cheers for the good vibes. if it sucked so bad, you wouldn't be on 6 right? I have no idea why some people are born grim reapers. To hell with em..I'm gonna be an awesome mama.

5 weeks to go from Saturday. I still need three bottles, a sterilizer, some sheets and blankets, and to wash all his wee things. I can't find any cheap button nighties. May just bring my pjs. Found all my stretch marks under my belly button. Looks like a map of Europe down there.

Let me know if you want to escape for coffee sometime.

dizzydixies · 05/06/2008 18:53

there we go, I think thats the most up to date - apologies if am wrong.

minipink good luck tomorrow, I have midwife tomorrow morning but no doubt won't be anything exciting

I also have fist meeting at primary school for dd starting in Aug when did that happen?!?!?

dizzydixies · 06/06/2008 10:19

minipink good luck this morning

I had midwife this morning - what a waste of sodding time. slight protein in urine but BP perfect so she starts yabbering on about preclampsia at which point I started ignoring her. She said 'so you'll be having a c/s then?' I told her I hadn't decided yet and was reading up on it and wanted to see my previous notes before making an informed decision - presumptious cow

am measuring 34wks and considering am 33 on Mon (I think) then thats not too bad is it?

minipinkscottish · 06/06/2008 15:46

Hi dizzy - you tell them girl!!

Well had growth scan and baby now measuring 39 weeks and lots of increased fluid. I have to go to hosp twice every week for a few hours for monitoring. Then they will scan again on the 20th (36 weeks) and said they would induce after that
Got a lecture on what to do if labour started and due to increased fluid cord came down first.....OMG talk about scaring you!!!!!

So have just got back from shopping and have bought everything that I didn't already have and mum bought us a new car seat. So I'm packing tonight....

Oh no hope this doesn't mean I'll miss Cairnie xx

whinegums · 06/06/2008 17:18

Dizzy and minipink - I really think that anyone in health system dealing with pregnancy completes a course called 'Scaring the Bejesus Out of Patients.' And another called 'Patronising - How To Talk Down Successfully.' Hope you're both ok.

Mcchesers - yes, coffee, must fit it in, but DP announced today he is going to finish off the work in our kitchen that he started in October and hasn't touched since! Arrrrgh! Oh scuse me, when is our baby due, oh yes, TWO WEEKS TODAY!!!!!! Flippin' heck!!!!!

OP posts:
LauraT · 06/06/2008 21:30

Hi ladies,

whinegums yes they definately do that course, it's compulsory, the patronising one is for extra credit. There's also one for we won't tell you anything useful unless you remember to ask specifically for it! They try it with me too, which is slightly ridiculous given that it's written on my notes that I'm a doctor. [disclaimer: not working in any area to do with babies/birth/pregnancy and definately not patronising or scary!]

I packed my bag today, it only took my Mum to visit and tell me that she had my sister 2 weeks early and me 8 days early, and i was the slow one at 4 1/2 hours, sis was only 2 hrs (first baby) she had no painful contractions until just before going to hospital and was 9 cm dilated on arrival! given that I'm due in less than 3weeks, thought maybe it was time to get organised!

dizzydixies · 06/06/2008 22:48

minipink I take it this isn't how you wanted it to go? did you see consulatant? are you worried or not so much, you must have some instinct with it being your 6th?

am sorry they've managed to scare you with this

whinegums · 07/06/2008 09:39

Laura, good lord, I bet you're hoping you've inherited your mother's birthing genes! 2 hours and no painful contractions???!!!!!

Glad to hear you've packed your bag, I've done one for the baby, and sort of a half-assed one for me. Might finish it this morning, if only so I stop tripping over it all during dark o'clock loo visits.

OP posts:
LauraT · 07/06/2008 11:25

there were painful contractions, but only for the 2 hours she was at hospital for. none prior to going to hospital and discovering she was alreday 9cm! (so she says anyway!)

slightly frightened at the prospect of things being that quick though, am now starting to over analyse the slightest twinge!

minipinkscottish · 07/06/2008 12:39

Dizzy - really wanted my home birth so disappointed. The consultant does not want me to go much past 36 weeks....we'll see!!

I'm only worried about going into labour before than and being so far from hosp with my history of super fast labours But I guess I'd manage...

Hope you're well and enjoying first week of maty leave...is the family well again?

dizzydixies · 07/06/2008 22:01

minipink am sorry he's managed to put the wind up you but why doesn't he want you to go past 36wks?
do you see Mr Nicoll - he is my consultant and he is lovely

minipinkscottish · 08/06/2008 08:17

dizzy - I go to Forth Park. I had to book here due to home birth plans. I think they believe the baby to be too big and there is too much fluid. However, if everything is ok at 36 wk scan then maybe they'll let me go longer.

Anyway I am feeling a bit more positive and just looking forward to meeting my little girl
xx

dizzydixies · 08/06/2008 22:43

of course you're closer to Forth Park - ignore me am a numpty am glad you're feeling better today - remember I've been told by the sonographer that the scans cannot tell you to any degree of accuracy how big the baby is going to be

do you have any feelings about it yourself?

last day tomorrow so cairnie for me VERY soon

vio · 09/06/2008 17:59

Hello everyone, thought maybe I should pop in and say hi and introduce myself as I live in Glasgow and I am due in Nov.

I have a son who would have been 14 months by now. I gave birth to a beautiful boy April last year, sadly, he was born with an incurable genetic condition called EB ( Epidermolysis Bullosa), he passed away in our arms at Robin House in Sept 2007. You can read about Jim Jim by visiting the following websites:

scotlandonsunday.scotsman.com/spectrum/Health-Handle-with-care.4092755.jp

www.justgiving.com/jim_jim

Anyway, don't mean to upset anyone, just that he's my son and he will always be my son even though he didn't get to live for very long.

I became pregnant again in March but I couldn't be happy until I have the baby tested and we are pleased that our baby is EB free but God, no words can actually describe how I felt at the time, not knowing if the baby is affected or not. I am thankful that DH & I have been given another child to be parents again.

Hope everyone is well

geordieminx · 09/06/2008 21:40

Hey ladies - some of you "know" me... some of you dont....yet

We are having a wee meet up this Friday, at the peoples palace on Glasgow green - 11am for coffee and cake.

You would all be more than welcome - bumps/babies/toddlers/monsters like mine!!

Thread for details is here

Vio, if you would like to come and help me control look after C then I can come and get you?

xxx

minipinkscottish · 10/06/2008 09:30

geordieminx - hi there and thanks for invite Wish it wasn't so far away so that I could come but I hope you all have a nice time!

Vio - welcome and congratulations on pg. Sorry you've had such a tough time but I bet it's made you a stronger person and you'll be a fantastic mum.

I am shattered again - not sleeping well at all! dizzy - I do think baby is big and I feel that my body has had enough....I just want my baby out now!!

sweetkitty · 10/06/2008 09:36

hello all just seen this thread again

geordie - thanks for the invite but am not sure I could drag the DDs and myself in on the train by myself right now, too scared to drive into Glasgow on my own during the week either.

vio - sorry to hear about your little man

4 and a bit weeks to go for me until Due Day, I hope I go a few days either side of this.

dizzydixies · 10/06/2008 09:37

vio can I say I read your links about JimJim and I am absolutely distraght about what both you and your lovely boy went through - I have very limited knowledge of EB but he sounds like he was an absolute delight through it all. Can I wish you and your family all the luck in the world with this new baby, am sure you'll make sure he/she knows all about his wonderful big brother as he'she grows up

geordie would love to, I miss lasgow dreadfully but unfortunately tis a bit far for me at the moment, count me in for the first one after this baby is born though

minipink as long as you're not being bullied into anything then great, your instincts have to be right by now lol
