Time for new thread. I'll add a link on the old one.

You're offered a 20 week scan at UCH as well.
And I had phials and phials of blood taken at 13 weeks too.

teabelly · 13/12/2004 11:53

Tribpot that's not right. In fact in places where you're only offered one scan on the nhs during your pregnancy it's the 20 week scan that you have!! The 20 week scan is where they normally check for abnomalies (spina bifida, down's, cleft palate, heart defects, etc) so I would definitely query this with your mw / hospital. In Bedford ours is set for between weeks 21 and 22.

teabelly · 13/12/2004 11:55

Katz...that's strange - how old is your dd?? I'd never heard of not being offered a 20 week scan...I guess I'm lucky that my area has always offered it.

katzguk · 13/12/2004 11:57

DD is now 2 so i guess it would be been 3 years ago. Sheffield changed its policy about 1 year ago. They didn't have enough ultrasonographers to offer two scans and even now the 20 week one is first come first served. One of the reasons they didn't used to routinely offer it was because they had a policy of not telling the baby's sex. Something about increased abortion rates when the sex was told

sweetheart · 13/12/2004 12:05

I wonder if anyone can help me with a query.

My dd's childminder phoned me on Sat to say that her dd had come out in chicken pox. All of our family has already had chicken pox but I'm just wondering if I should stay away - is there a risk of infection to the baby?????

I've left a message for the midwife to call me but I thought someone here might know in the meantime.

TIA xxx

teabelly · 13/12/2004 12:07

God that's awful...I mean what about checking for any problems, not just with bubba but also things like placenta position? I'm truely shocked. Well I'm glad they've changed their policies - although the first come policy is still a worry, have you got a date for yours or will you not know yet?

teabelly · 13/12/2004 12:10

Sweetheart, I know you should stay away (esp in early stages) from Rubella, but not sure about Chickenpox...in the recesses of my mind I vaguely remember that a friend of mine was @ 6 months pg when her dh got chickenpox and she was fine...but I would find out for sure - maybe you could phone nhs direct?

welshmum · 13/12/2004 12:13

Sweetheart, if you had chicken pox as a child I think you're ok BUT you have to be sure that you did otherwise if you did get infected with the virus it can be very dangerous for your baby - increased risk of birth defects associated with it.

tribpot · 13/12/2004 12:20

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks no 20 week scan is weird. I've left a message for the midwife and will see what she says.

katzguk · 13/12/2004 12:30

Got 20 week scan all booked up, booked at the same time as i had my 11week scan, got the pick of the date and time!! So have booked the first appointment in the afternoon so it should be on time!!

teabelly · 13/12/2004 12:33

should be on time, ha ha ha...not likely if you have a bladder full of water and the slightest twinge will make you pee yourself - well at least that's my experience anyway, he he he Grin

katzguk · 13/12/2004 12:35

have never been told to have a bladder full of water for a scan! and touch wood have never had any problems!

teabelly · 13/12/2004 12:37

Envy you lucky thing...I've always had to have a gallon of water, and everytime just when I think I can't wait anymore and am definitely gonna pee myself I eventually get called in!!

katzguk · 13/12/2004 12:40

sounds awful!! bet you this timke thye will make me drink loads to get a better picture

tribpot · 13/12/2004 12:54

I've been told to have a full bladder for my 12 week NHS scan (only I'm not having it cos they cancelled it because of the private scan ... I dunno) - the private one only says to have a half-full bladder, which sounds mildly more comfortable.

In a new twist, my husband has finally got his inpatient bed today at the hospital, he's to go in at 4 p.m. this afternoon. I'm hoping they'll let him out for the scan though, even though it's in Cambridge (30 miles away). Anyone been in a similar situation?

teabelly · 13/12/2004 12:56

Sorry no experience of this. Hope it's nothing too serious.

tribpot · 13/12/2004 13:00

Not life-threatening, fortunately, but he's been very unwell for a long period of time, and is now housebound and has to use a wheelchair when we can get out. (Oddly enough, this is the reason the sportscar is being sold - not the baby of course, the wheelchair!).

Not sure what the hospital will bring to the party, but I'm just hoping like hell he makes some improvement before the baby arrives.

teabelly · 13/12/2004 13:17

How awful for you both...here's keeping fingers crossed that improvements will occur. Funnily enough we're just getting rid of the sports car, only coz no2 is on it's way, and we each need to have a car where we can take both kiddies out. At the mo with only one it's not a problem, and ds loves the car...infact he loves it sooo much we think he's going to take it the hardest when we get rid of it Grin

Uwila · 13/12/2004 15:07

Sweetheart, I think you and baby are safe. I am the youngest of four kids. When my mum was pregnant with me, my three syblings had the chickenpox. I remember when I was a kid my mum asked the pediatrician if that could have made me immune. But, alas, when I was 8 years old, I caught them. So, I think that if you are immune to them, you will be prtected, and likewise your immune system will protect baby so long as he she resides inside you. But, the baby will not be immune to them as a child just because you wee exposed when pregnant. But, I don't think you have anything to worry about now.

Tripbot, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you both as well. Hope it all brings some good news.

Just to add my twopenniesworth, I thought that a 20 week scan was standard. Also, every time I walk near the anti-natal ward, someone seems to be sticking needles in me to take more blood as routine. I dont seem to have to make special appointments to have them done. Like Katzguk, my 20 week scan was booked when I went for my 12 week scan.

BUBBALOO · 13/12/2004 21:21

lipstickmum-good luck for your scan tomorrow.will be thinking of youSmile

LipstickMum · 14/12/2004 09:15

I got an appt for my 20 week scan about 3 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure it's standard, it's the earlier dating/viability scans which aren't.

Scan this afternoon at 3pm! Going to take little dd to see her new lil brother or sister. Nervous and excited!!

LipstickMum · 14/12/2004 09:15

Off to have a bacon buttie

Uwila · 14/12/2004 09:53

Well I've just committed my stupid pregnancy act for the day. Not only did I post on the July thread instead of the June one, but I even first read through all of the posts thing (1- hmmm lots of new names on here I don't recognise, and 2- gee, seems odd these people are only 9 weeks) Duh! How dumb can I be. Oh well, I'm in the right place now. Looking forward to my booking appointment tomorrow. I'm hoping to get a date for the anomoly scan when I will hopefully find out the sex. Also hoping to get an appointment to see the consultant to talk about (demand, actually) an elective caesarean.

Hope everyone else's brain is in tact today.

Good luck for your scan LipstickMum! Exciting isn't it
Sweetheart, if all your family have had chicken pox I bet you're OK. Even if you do get it, the risk of abnormalities is really quite small indeed. However, if you are still worried you can get a blood test done to check for immunity.
Thanks everyone, btw, for your good wishes about our little boy!
