Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
oceanmama · 31/01/2005 12:04

Morning everyone! Am catching up after a busy weekend - I spent all of last week clearing out our spare room, then on Sunday we bought paint and a few bits of furniture - cot, bed linen, changing table...my parents are coming round next week to help us paint and my grandma is making new curtains - everything's starting to take shape

Welcome to all the new people - exciting to see we've got our first boy! Also hope misdee's DH is feeling better.

I can really sympathise with that "ready to burst" feeling - I get a stretching feeling everytime the baby tries to move now, and am having to take showers rather than baths because trying to lie on my back is just too painful. I've been faithfully practising my "hips elevated" position while watching TV to try and encourage her to turn - not sure if it's worked yet or not...

Hope everyone's having good mornings so far

kolakube · 31/01/2005 12:13

Cheers sweeney,

I heard lounging on the sofa with the pelvis tilted back can leave baby in spine to spine position which causes a longer labour. Squatting again something to do with baby position?!

Cristina7 · 31/01/2005 13:20

Hi and thanks for the welcome. I am having weekly hospital monitoring (in Kingston) due to gestational diabetes which I developed this time round. So far, so good, I seem to be keeping my levels more or less under control, although I'll find out tomorrow if i need to get started on some insulin too. It's amazing how quickly and easily you can give up chocolate and baklavas once you know it matter for more than your figure!

Leogaela · 31/01/2005 13:48

Pidge - wedding in the lakedistrict sounds great! I love the lake district! Did you find something nice to wear?

I am also glad to hear that other people are as disorganised as we are (Pidge!). We planned to put up the cot this weekend so we can go and buy a matress for it and shop for the rest of the essentials we need. We didn't do anything at all! I had a bit of a panic last night and have finally written a list of the essential things we have missing. I don't think the baby is quite ready to come out yet, but the next few weeks/weekends are so busy that I don't know when we are going to have time to go shopping.

We did look at a nursery on Saturday (we were warned to reserve a place very early). I thought it was going to be really tough to chose one and feel happy about it, however I was really impressed with this place. They mix all ages of children together (only have about 2 small babies), are very flexible, take the kids outside for a walk or to a playground every day and there is a roof terrace for them to play on as well. They prepare all meals with organic food, its in a perfect location AND they have a place for ours in October! Cost..... ahem, for 3 days a week it works out to be 1300CHF per month, thats about £580! That's about standard in Zurich. If we have another child it will end up costing more than one of our salaries!

I thought it was supposed to be good to practice squatting as its supposed to be a good birth position (????) and good to get into practice and strenthen your legs.

Pidge · 31/01/2005 13:58

Cristina7 - I could do with some motivation to stop scoffing chocolate! Yesterday I ate two chocolate caramel squares and some chocolate ice-cream! Have just bought myself a big bag of grapes to eat at my desk - as if this will compensate for my weekend overindulgence.

Leogaela - I keep claiming this is the laid back approach to having a baby - but truth is we are just plain disorganised! Have visions of dp up in the loft rooting around for babygros, whilst I'm in labour downstairs!

The wedding was great - I wore a plain black dress borrowed from SIL. It must have had a slimming effect, because 3 people commented on how petite my bump was! And the hotel was in a stunning location - just a shame not to get more time there, and didn't get to hike up any mountains!

Cristina7 · 31/01/2005 14:15

Leogaela - where will you get a matress from? I noticed you're in Zurich, maybe they are cheaper over there? Or perhaps not, by the cost of the nursery. I saw some mattresses on the internet but they are £80 or more! I can buy a new bed with that money.

I have received lots of girl baby clothes from a mum at DS's nursery. I have many items too from Dominic as I used to but really colourful stuff for him when he was a baby, so they'd go for a girl too. I have all the big equipment from Dominic but would need a car seat. I bought the new baby aboput a dozen cotton nappies and wraps, I'll see how we get on with them. Or rather how I get on with them as DH has made it clear it's disposables when he has to change her.

Pidge - indulge in the chocolate and be thankful it doesn't matter, really. I love chocolate.

Leogaela · 31/01/2005 14:55

Cristina - I'm not sure about the matress, we have a Tesco type of supermarket that does good quality baby things, DH's sister gave us their old cot so we don't need to buy that part. How about Ikea, they are always good value for money. Switzerland is expensive and we will probably rder things from Germany from the internet, but I am never keen on buying something I haven't seen. We will probably get the pushchair from Germany, but I'll chose one here first.
I am also getting as many second hand and donated things as possible. I think its such a waste to buy loads of new stuff that the baby can't really appreciate and will only use for a short time.

I really want to do the re-usable nappy thing, but I figured that it will be essential to wash every day and we have a communal washing machine for which there is a rota for all the apartments in our building, officially we get to use it 2 days every 3 weeks!!!!! Yeah, don't laugh, I am taking Wed afternoon off work this week to do the washing! So I think we are going to have to stick to disposables.

Pidge - that's the same reason that I made sure I wrote a list on Sunday... just in case DH gets left to finish preparing things on his own!

jambot · 31/01/2005 15:04

Feeling a bit sick today. Suffered terribly with pregnancy sickness from week 6 to 4 months. Someone did say it does sometimes come back towards the end. Hope not. That first part of the pregnancy was hell! Also had a panic about all the 'stuff' I didn't have the other day. Rushed off to stock up as I'm paranoid the baby will come early. Have my check-up with the gynae on Wednesday. Scared to get on the dreaded scale. Having been eating like a pig!

sweeney · 31/01/2005 15:43

had midwife appt this morning and baby is head down which is great though she said it could still turn. tears in the eyes listening to baby's heart beat as usual. i find it all so amazing.still can't beleive that i'm actually having a baby. my first at 37. not that i tried before it just took me this long to find the right man and be ready. still reading lots and preparing for active birth. i so hope that i'll be able to have a natural birth with no pain relief. but i know it's important not to be too rigid.
anyone get fizzy feet?

Pidge · 31/01/2005 16:04

No fizzy feet (!) sweeney! But totally identify on the excitment about the baby. I feel like becoming a mum is the most amazing thing I've done by some considerable margin. And I'm getting increasingly excited about doing the baby thing again. Seem to have blanked out the sleepless nights and painful start to breastfeeding, and have only images of everyone clucking over my beautiful offspring and telling me how clever I was .

Jambot - I've been feeling sick again too. Also had terrible sickness up to 4 months. It's never gone completely and over the last 2-3 weeks it's been coming back in the evenings if I'm not careful to eat properly. It's nowhere near as bad as the early months though, and hopefully will stay that way. Didn't get this problem at all first time round, though I was sick at the beginning then too.

latwinkle1 · 31/01/2005 17:53

Enjoy the choccie now! I have a thing for clementines and sorbet, cheese also still quite high on the list. I always feel bigger in th evening, anyone know why? a bath sometimes helps but still feel like i'm going to pop, it's better in the mornings. Still hacking like an old drain gave in to a weak hot toddie this eve. X

jambot · 31/01/2005 20:23

Just been to our ante-natal class. Did pain relief options. Although all my friends bar one have had an epidural, I really hope I can last without one. Hate the idea of all the drips and the catheter and being stuck on that bed like a beached whale! Although who knows, I may be screaming for the ruddy thing after a few hours.
Thought it would be fun to come up with things the books don't tell you. The one thing I've found out over the last few weeks is that it becomes almost impossible to wipe your bottom when you're on the loo! Sounds disgusting I know but I find I have to be a contortionist to get it right! Any other things you have found no-one tells you about?

Leogaela · 01/02/2005 10:00

That's funny Latwinkle1, I awayls feel worse in the morning. I was feeling very sorry for myself and quite weepy this morning. Puffing away just to get out of bed and get myself organised for work. My legs have this kind of weak feeling in them as if they are not going ot hold me up anymore. THe skin around my belly button is burning hot. I also feel sick in the morning, but only after I have eaten. I need to get up early tomorrow and am absolutely dreading it!

Had birth preparation classes last night as well, another reason that I'm feeling sorry for myself. My bump is HUGE compared to all the others even though most of them are bigger people than me - that is the exception of one girl who is due in 2 weeks and has been told her baby is so big that they are going to measure her properly to see if she will be able to have a natural birth. Now I am terrified that the same will happen to me! I keep thinking maybe I have the dates wrong, and praying it will decide to come a bit early. I am pretty sure it's not ready to come yet though.

Jambot - i feel the same about an epidural. the thought of it to me is worse than the thought of all the pain, although I understand that they give you epidurals now which allow you to be able to walk around and still quite active. My hospital offers alternative pain relief and someof the midwives actually prefer to go with that than an epidural - homeopathy, acupuncture etc. and if that isn't enough they will try other drugs first if you don't want an epidural. I am hoping for a waterbirth, which is supposed to help relax you throught the pain alhtough the midwife said it doesn't reduce the pain. Lots of people don't have epidurals so I am like you hoping to cope without.

Things you can't do that the books don't tell you about:-

cut your toenails (I treated myself to a pedicure a couple of weeks ago)

Cristina7 · 01/02/2005 13:51

"epidurals now which allow you to be able to walk around and still quite active"

Oh, the so-called "mobile epidurals"! Nice thought if you weren't all wired up to various drips and monitoring devices. I had one and I wasn't that mobile, I mean I could feel and move my legs but I couldn't go anywhere due to all the connections and wires.

Pidge · 01/02/2005 13:54

Leogaela - it's very hard to judge bump size against other people, and it doesn't necessarily relate to baby size at all. Some people look huge and have tiny babies and vice versa, so don't panic!

I was really hoping first time round to avoid an epidural, but after 2.5 days in labour, including 8 hours of contractions every 1-3 minutes and still not dilating at all (4cm and not shifting), I was the happiest woman in the world when the epidural man showed up! And although the birth wasn't the 'completely natural' one I'd hoped for, I feel really positive about it because everything was done to give me the best chance of avoiding intervention and when I had the epidural, and syntocin I know it was the best thing for me. So ... I guess I would say, definitely know what you would ideally like, but be prepared for all eventualities! As you know I'm hoping for a homebirth this time, but if I end up in hospital so be it.

I feel very stiff in the mornings these days - and hobble about furiously on my creaky legs!

Latwinkle - I used to feel bigger in the evenings too - and apparently that's quite common, it's quite simply gravity taking an effect over the day so the bump hangs out everywhere! Don't notice it so much these days when the bump feels huge at all times.

Girly · 01/02/2005 14:38

So as you all don't feel lonely my bump is HUGE too! and if one more person says'wow your big' I will deck em

Got weekly check ups from now as am high risk due to asthma, which is a bit of a bore and my bag is sort of packed

Had a pedicure last week and will get my hair cut soon and then will be ready for the off....

Race you....

Leogaela · 01/02/2005 14:51

Girly - that's not fair! you have a headstart on me!!!!

People just don't realise what they are saying do they! The other one I REALLY hate that people say is 'do you know what it is yet?' I answer 'No!' then they say, 'Well it doesn't matter anyway, so long as its healthy!'.... Great! Thank you and if its not healthy then what the am I supposed to do? send it back!!!!! Can't people think of something more sensitive and helpful to say!

Sorry, not the best of moods today, hopefully my yoga this evening will relax me a bit!

misdee · 01/02/2005 14:53

i al;ways think when people say that 'as long as bubs is alive thats all i'm worrying about'.

I think there is a thread somewhere about all the silly things people say to a pregnant woman...

Londonmummy05 · 01/02/2005 20:37

hi fellow march gals,
Hope you're all doing well, Misdee hope everything's ok with DH, thinking of you. Congrats on the nuptuals Leogeala what an exciting year for you! I'm doing fine, back is ok now, went to physio and she said it wasn't a hairline fracture and just nerve or muscle cause of ribs expanding. Only problem I have now is getting really hungry and then getting full after one bite! Very frustrating! Dh is still snoring but I've bought earplugs and learnt to deal with it I've bought a couple of bodysuits for baby and dh has started buying random things like bottle stereliser and nappy wrapper ( bearing in mind we still have no pram or car seat-men and their gadgets!) I'm so excited dh's cousin is throwing a baby shower for me on Thursday, I;ve never been to one before, we don't really do them here do we? Can't wait to see all my girlies and cute pressies although some have said they think it;s bad luck and are going to wait until after baby's born to get pressies, which is fine but not a very nice thought! I'll keep you all posted .
xx

misdee · 01/02/2005 20:40

we're doing ok here. have lost all the frills for the moses basket, so may have to buy a crib , have finally moved the pc to the living room, and am slowly getting everything else straight.

dh is likely to be in hospital for a while, so may miss the birth, but as long as he gets well thats all that matters.

am very twingey and nesting abit as well.

I am staying at home today, washing all the baby stuff we have, going to try to get a bit more organised and spend sometime trying to get some reality into the fact that we are going to have a baby in a few weeks...

A baby shower sounds like a lovely idea - something to make you feel special before all the attention is on the baby.

Misdee, sorry to hear the dh will probably miss the birth. Did you manage to change your hospital so you can be closer to him after the birth? Waiting excitedly to hear if your twinges develop into anything else yet!!!

I had some funny pains last night in bed, but I think it was probably the ligaments stretching because my bump wasn't supported properly or something. I couldn't help thinking it could be maybe....

Pidge, everyone now seems to think I am having a boy! Are people eager to make the same predictions for you? We go to the doctor next week and I am tempted to ask, but somehow I still think that knowing could end up feeling as if I have peeked at my presents before christmas day!

shalaa · 02/02/2005 10:41

Had check up yesterday and they found protein and blood in my urine so off to the hospital today for a culture! Baby is head down and 2/5 engaged, my bag is packed, nursery is almost finished and i'm as ready as i'm ever going to be!! Am feeling heavy, tired and grumpy now, can't wait to have my body back!

misdee · 02/02/2005 10:44

got 2 check ups today, growth scan and appt with consultant. part of me wants to hear the words 'we're gonna induce you' and part of me wats to hear everythign is fine and just hang on. i hate these last 4 weeks.
