My twins are due in May and it would be nice to have other multiple-mums-to-be to chat to!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
GettingBiggerBird · 28/08/2008 20:44

I was planning to leave at the end of October, but I might need to work from home a bit more before that, the rate I'm going. And I need to not go near management from about now .

accessorizequeen · 28/08/2008 20:54

Was that about 6 weeks before your due date, gbb? I thought that too, and although I was forced to go off sick, I did feel quite relieved that I left at 28 weeks, it was getting really really hard. I had no idea I would become so unable to do basic things easily so early on compared to previous pregnancies.
Must get a photo of my bump on here (although I think pazza has a fairly similar one of her at 36 weeks

MerryMarigold · 28/08/2008 21:44

accessorize, oh my goodness, maybe babies next week! Eeeeeeeek. I get BH's quite a lot (right now, actually!). Am really hoping these babes come at 36 weeks. Got the car, now I need a freezer and tumble dryer and real nappies, clothes out of loft, buggy and then I am sorted really! 6 weeks to get it done. Pleeease get photo of bump on here. I thought Pazza was quite small. Can I email you my mobile number so you can let me know when it all happens? [And I can post on here if you'd like me too]. I am so excited for you!

I've just got back from 2 days at my parents and dh promptly called someone (no kiss 'hello' or 'how are you'?). And is now in some deep chat for past 20 minutes, doesn't sound like it's winding up either . Will start calling him OH and not DH.

I have MW appointment tomorrow to get my MATB1 and check the HB's as haven't seen anyone for couple of weeks. Definitely going through a bit of an 'anxious' phase. They've stopped kicking so much, and most kicks seem to be from baby boy, haven't felt dd for ages (altho it is a bit hard to always tell who is who).

accessorizequeen · 28/08/2008 22:23

Had to laugh at your getting sorted list - quite a lot of things really, Merry Are you doing cloth as well, yippee! Had been wondering whether I could cope as ds2 in them and not sure if I can do all 3 - I might put him in sposies and just do the twins but I don't think I have quite enough for newborns (ono started using them with ds2 at 4 months).

I haven't sorted out my texting or email announcement list (although have a posted birth announcement created & waiting for photos), have spent last week trying to get up to date addresses from various people. But if I go into labour tomorrow, I guess dp's friends will know and mine won't! I hadn't thought to put your email on my announce list, I do have it of course, can add mobile as well but I found it easier last time to email friends rather than text (as phones not allowed in the hospital). In fact I posted on MN (my antenatal group) a few hours after I'd had ds2 as I couldn't sleep anyway for excitement...

Even at this late stage I cannot remotely tell which twin is which and they're b/g too.Mine have had quiet weeks though, and seems to be when they've changed position and one's on top of the other which they've done a lot. My bump is a lot more upfront than spread out for that reason. I have got worried a few times, but just had a really cold glass of water and waited half an hour, usually puts my mind to rest.

DP test drove a sedona today, he said he thinks it's great but not as fuel efficient as a galaxy. However, sliding doors are an option I'm not sure I can manage without as would make life sooo much easier. I've told him I'm not having a silver car though, so that's made his job harder!

I find standing side on in front of dp with no top on generally gets his attention - he asked me the other day how I manage to stand up!

mel2005 · 28/08/2008 23:11

ewemoo, try not to worry, i had a mc in feb as well and its hard i know and i constantly worry about loosing my two. my consultant said it is uncommon to lose them this late especially if they are non-identical and its best not to worry. just make sure you get alot of rest and dont do too much. shopping for them does help. i have bought everything but the bigger car and i am 20+5weeks it feels good to have everything sorted (and i love bargain hunting on e-bay and in the sales)

GettingBiggerBird · 29/08/2008 10:06

End Oct is about week 32 for me, so I know I'll be struggling but I really don't want to leave any earlier as I can't afford to stay off for a full year. I guess if I'm finding it too hard before that, I'll have to go off sick too. I hope not.

Very impressed that some of you are planning on using cloth nappies, I just can't face it with double. I tried with DD but DH was totally unsupportive so when I went back to work and he took over the childcare, it was back to disposables and a waste of money to have bought the cloth ones in the first place. And the eco disposables are so ridiculously expensive, ho hum.

Trying to resist too much shopping but am planning a tour of London soon to pick up all the secondhand stuff friends have promised me , can't wait to see what I get in the haul!

accessorizequeen · 29/08/2008 12:49

I guess you'll just have to see how things go, GBB. I think I was too set on staying until a certain point so when I was signed off sick I got very upset for several weeks. I'm off now until Jan 2010!

I got two newborn cloth nappies from a mumsnetter in the post this morning, so cute! I just hope I use em. My dp will reach for a disposable if it's there so I hide them, he's pretty rubbish about it until I mention how much money we would save using them on the dt's.

MerryMarigold · 29/08/2008 16:41

I've never used cloth nappies, so no idea of the hassle involved (but reason for buying the tumble dryer!). Just thought I will feel too guilty to throw out double the number of nappies I threw out with ds. He goes through so few nappies now, it doesn't bother me, but that first year they just zoooooom through them. My target is to use 50:50. I figure some is definitely better than none. Can anyone recommend any particular brands for newborn?

accessorize, as long as you post on here quickly, I am happy with that . Just didn't want to be in suspense for 2 weeks!! Our hospital allowes mobiles on the wards, thank goodness, I would have died of boredom without text messages last time! Had LOL at the silver car. I have a thing about them too, but was willing to put my 'sacrifice' for the sake of a bargain. As it turns out, the new car is dark blue. Quite smart - not for long I'm sure. I've never been through a car wash !

accessorizequeen · 29/08/2008 17:03

My postnatal thread (for ds2) also thought I'd had the twins because I hadn't posted for 2 days!

Merry, I'm not being too ambitious either with the nappies. I got a bimble and a size 1 fluffle this morning, they're great (fluffles good for nighttime, I use them on ds2 now in the size 2). I also bought some kissaluvs and sandies, both of which are highly rated for newborns (plus diddy diapers) - motherease wraps on top although I think I have some popolini ones too. Quite different from what I use with ds2, but all bought very cheaply off mumsnetters. DS2 mainly in pocket nappies like wonderoos which would swim on the twins for a few months I think. I'm thinking of some more bimbles as they just seem ideal really although you might want to go for something with poppers/velcro for dh? Kissaluvs have poppers as do sandies.

accessorizequeen · 29/08/2008 19:48

Mel, was v.interested in how you got on with the car seat adaptors for maxicosi? Do you have the isofix ones (e.g. silver bars at the bottom)? I'd be quite pleased to get one on really, and I will have the same setup as you, I think.
Did I mention I'm probably going to buy a Baby Jogger City Mini Double for the car as well . We saw a single this week & it was so brilliant we were both sold on it and thought we might have 2 for the first few months then decide between them when the carrycots no longer needed on the MB. It was the easiest buggy to fold I have ever seen, great to push, excellent sun canopies & lay v.flat for newborns (although needing padding, I have 2 sheepskins). I haven't ordered it yet as I feel quite indulgent about it, but we both think it will make life so much easier in the early days and ds2 will be v.comfy in it too.

GettingBiggerBird · 29/08/2008 20:09

Aaargh , it was all going so well. Have managed not to snap at my mum at all even though it's been over a week. She's been getting the odd dig in as usual but I've been too tired to care. Then today she thinks it's a good idea to say to her DD [me], pregnant with twins, 'well, you're not exactly the maternal type, are you' then roared with laughter. Hurumph.

Sorry, selfish rant over. Roll on Sunday and going home even if it is a tip (i'm pretty sure it is).

Now I'm off to be very sad and watch BB (probably the only person in the country who is, I realise, but it's about the right intellectual level for me right now).

MarsLady · 29/08/2008 20:23

ladies with your newborn twins I'd start with the disposables. You'll have enough on your mind feeding them and getting some rest. After a few weeks go for the cloth.

accessorizequeen · 29/08/2008 20:53

Sorry, GBB - as you say, you did v.well for nearly a week! My mum generally fab, but now and again she comes up with some doozies!
Mars, you are absolutely right and if it takes me 3 months that's fine. I find them a doddle now, but not going to stress myself out more than I have to. I have 6 packs of disposables upstairs already! Eco friendly ones at least...

MerryMarigold · 29/08/2008 22:50

Thanks for the tip, Mars. Will save buying teeeny weeny cloth nappies as well...better get my bul buy in from Spirit of Nature!

Pheonixnights · 30/08/2008 10:29

Hi Ladies!

Had my 20 week scan yesterday! It was fab. DH and I watched them for 50 minutes will the sonographer did all the measurements. Everything was fine. One of the babies is alot longer than the other but they both weigh the same (12oz). It was so lovely!! Seeing their profiles made me cry!! Now I can start shopping hooray!!

MerryMarigold · 30/08/2008 10:51

Wow phoenix are you at a private hospital or something?! I am so . my 20wk scan took a max of 10 mins (quicker my 20wks with single baby!). and the guy was really rude and very rough! subsequent ones not been so bad, but when I ask questions I get answers like: "They are fine, they are doing well, their size is similar, they seem to be doing ok..." . I've never been told a weight. Anyway...so glad it was nice for you, and helped reassure you. Yeah, get shopping! But don't bid on 'my' mountain buggy on ebay - it's already getting too high...

Pheonixnights · 30/08/2008 11:47

No not private I am going to the Rosie Maternity hospital which is attached to Addenbrooks Cambridge - They have 2 screens so they work on one and you watch on the other. It was amazing! The sonographer kept on saving how sweet the babies are which made me love her even more!!

Don't worry about the MB! My lovely mum has offered to buy me a double pushchair. I am going to kiddicare in Peterborough soon (they are on t'internet). I think I might get the out and about nipper for when they are bigger. When they are tiny I am putting them in my old pram together. I really don't think I'll be going out much anyway!!

mel2005 · 30/08/2008 14:16

yehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!
good old e-bay!!!
i have just sold my car so now i can go car shopping!!!!!!!
i have my eyes on a citroen c8 and a peugeot 807. i like the c8 because its cheaper and DH likes the 807 because its got more gadgets and its newer. the 807 is a private sale and because there are more gadgets there is more to be wrong and the C8 is from a dealer and has a year waranty. milage is almost the same on both.
the trade in we were offered on my c-max was shocking so we had to wait and sell mine before buying the new one. now i dont have a car and the only things we have left are two transit tippers and a HUGE van both of which i hate driving. hopefully we will decide on one of the cars and i will be mobile again.
i am sad to see my lovely little c-max gone as i loved it to bits and it was so nippy.

MerryMarigold · 31/08/2008 12:41

congrats mel. hope you don't have to drive the transit for long. i liked the citroens for the price too! we got our previa from a dealer so we get a year's guarantee which is great piece of mind, and they serviced it just before we got it too. our last car was a bad move, we got from some local dodgy dealer not an 'approved' mazda dealer and we have lost a fair bit of money on it.

we just our new car yesterday. my gosh, it's a monster. i am getting car envy every time i see a corsa or a yaris! dh is taking ours to try and sell today, we will see...it is not in great nick and we don't have a manual for it either. oooops. we were a bit naive when it came to buying a car.

well, i lost another MB. This one went for 360.00. Blimey. They don't seem to be going for under 300.00 anymore. Oh well, no rush.

MerryMarigold · 31/08/2008 12:41

doh! PEACE of mind

GettingBiggerBird · 31/08/2008 14:15

Congrats on the car, Mel. It's scary to think that with my stepchildren we won't all fit in our volvo estate, but then they're virtually grown up and don't live at home so we'll manage.

MM, shame about the MBs, very frustrating but maybe something will come along. Perhaps through one of the twins clubs? I'll keep an ear out too.

Good news to Pheonixnights about the scan. I had a very long one at 20 weeks as they were being really thorough about all the measurements and it was nice to be reassured though no nice comments about my babies from the consultant!

Just a couple of hours till I head back up to London with DD, I managed not to kill mum and it has certainly been relaxing not having to do any cleaning, cooking, or work. It will be a shock getting up at 7 again. We had a lovely day yesterday at an old schoolfriend's house for the day, the only day of sunshine all week so great timing. I think they were all a bit shocked at the size of me for 23 weeks though . I'm also starting to get quite nervous about the amount of movement/somersaults already, I got woken up a couple of times last night and I guess that's going to get a lot worse?

poorbuthappy · 01/09/2008 12:05

Blardy hell - just typed a huuge post and then I got thrown out of the website.....

So in a nutshell...

Anomoly scan was perfect - girls! Bring on the pink!

Holiday was great but knackering, glad to be back in work for a rest.

MEL - good news on the car - we are getting a VW Touran.
Also decided on a nipper 360 buggy...

Hubby felt kick over the weekend - feeling more somersaults rather than kicking...

Demolishing spare room at the moment - on the lookout for some gorgeous fabric for curtains cushions etc...want a completely different nursery this time, something quite modern I think...

Hope everyone is well...just off out to buy some lovely lunch!

mel2005 · 01/09/2008 12:57

Hi all, i have spent hours on the internet researching the BPA in baby bottles. i ended up calling the food standards agency and spoke to a lovely lady thats e-mailing me some more info. basically canada and america have banned it but as a precaution (to stop liable cases probably) they have been doing tests as the reasearch is really old. they concluded that the BPA is in small quantities and that it is safer than was believed before . it is also in the air and alot of other plastic things and linings in cans of food.
i read that asda (part of woolmart) were only stocking BPA free bottles BUT on their website they are all BPA bottles????!!!???.
i said i was concerned that if i used PP bottles that i would find out in 5 years they were worse than the BPA bottles. they all contain something toxic but in very small quantities so they are probably not that much better. the only alternative is glass which i did consider but is just not practical in a house with stone floors and young children helping with feeds.
i have decided to stay with my BPA bottles as we rarely have cans of food and dont eat things from plastic containers often. the childrens exposure to chemicals is limited compared to alot of children and the risks are so very small if the manufacturers instructions are followed. the exposure is way under the limits, i think they have to have four times the amount of feed to reach daily limits. its hard to know really what to believe.
what do you all think about it? and what bottles are you planning to buy (if any?)

GettingBiggerBird · 01/09/2008 13:00

GettingBiggerBird · 01/09/2008 13:07

Mel - I think you need to stop reading so much, you'll worry yourself sick . Seriously though, it sounds like you're concerned enough to be thinking about everything you reasonably can to make your twins safe and healthy. I haven't even thought about which bottles yet, last time what I worried about with DD was finding the teats that caused the least angst and wind and the bottles followed from there, regardless of anything else.
