Oh gosh that's scary, I hope our LOs will be cooking up for longer!

I personally am one of those people who will feel better when the baby is monitored as much as poss, but it's just my thing. The idea of a Home birth or even a pool somehow never appealed to me, I just want a bed and for him to be monitored tbh. I reckon it's best to go with what feels most "right" to you. xx

biscuitcat · 11/06/2021 10:41

@Inmypjsagain wow that must have been a shock for them! Our NCT teacher told us about a couple she'd had who ended up having their baby after the first session, so it clearly can happen - and while I'm a bit sick and tired of pregnancy, I do want baby to stay inside for a bit longer...

@WolfMother326 if baby turns head down, my plan is labour ward. In my hospital you can set the room up like the midwife led unit with low lighting, etc., and they have a pool in one of the rooms which I'd like to use if it's free, so for me that feels like a nice balance of calm/relaxed/home-like, and close to the good drugs and emergency care if needed!

Inmypjsagain · 11/06/2021 11:01

@Whatshouldbemyusername is it a constant ache? Tbh I’m not sure but my answer to everything is a foot massage, could that relieve it?

@WolfMother326 I’m hoping for a c section but if that doesn’t go to plan I want to be on the ward with the most drugs possible! I also like the idea of being monitored. Don’t think a home birth would be for me!

Sorry someone on the other page asked what bag- I’m using a wheelie suitcase hand luggage bag with a separate back pack- probably with husband’s stuff in it.

Absolutely, pregnancy is grim but I’d like to make it further down the line… but you know when you keep hearing about early births, I’m wondering if it’s a sign!

@biscuitcat so have you started nct now then? We’ve only got the WhatsApp group which seems pretty quiet atm (fair enough, work day and no one knows anyone!) but we need a doll or a stuffed toy for our first meeting, which made me a bit 🤨 didn’t realise we’d be doing practical stuff…!

Whatshouldbemyusername · 11/06/2021 11:19

@Inmypjsagain it's a background pain but when I walk it's quite abit. I might treat myself to a professional pedi this weekend - maybe that might help the heel area.

I'm actually thinking of changing my hospital to another one closer to me. The one I'm with is 45 minute drive and with the London traffic it can take over an hour on a busy day.

Is anyone with Queen Charlotte maternity in NW London? I spoke to them on the phone and told them am 29+5 and they said it's not too late to change if I still want to give birth at their hospital...

Daffodil21 · 11/06/2021 11:35

@WolfMother326 I'm also planning a C section but if he arrives earlier I will be going to the consultant led hospital. Half expecting to give birth on the side of the road though given how quick my mum's labours were and far away the hosp is!!

Inmypjsagain · 11/06/2021 11:36

@Whatshouldbemyusername i’d try the pedi as it’s a nice treat anyway! I’m with Queen Charlottes, so far so good. They’re meant to be rated outstanding and I’ve been recommended them by friends who had difficult pregnancies. I’ve gone in for growth scans and reduced movements and they’ve been great. Now that partners are allowed it can pretty packed in the waiting areas and the car park is a bit of a mission to the hospital. I wasn’t particularly impressed with the community Midwives but I don’t know if that’s allocated by the hospital? Anyway I asked for a new midwife and I really like her!

lucyrp · 11/06/2021 11:46

@WolfMother326 I don't really mind where I give birth, I'm open to wherever it happens! Planning to give birth in my local midwife unit but it could be at home or in hospital!

@Inmypjsagain I would highly suggest packing different bags for each of you, I didn't even know people packed it all in one! Baby's changing bag is fine for them and just a weekend bag for yourself ! You'll probably be putting nappies on the doll or stuffed toy that's what they tend to do or trying baby grows etc 🤪

WolfMother326 · 11/06/2021 11:49

oh no @Daffodil21 - maybe leave an extra blanket or two in the car! Shock

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I know its very personal and tricky to decide. The birthing centre at my hospital is right next to the labour ward so could be moved if anything came up. Otherwise I probably wouldn't consider it!

Ready2020 · 11/06/2021 11:52

I'm hoping to go to the Lothian Birth Centre at the Royal in Edinburgh. Its midwife led and I've seen a video tour and the rooms look great. They all have pools in them and that's something I'm keen on. Plus it's right next to the ward in case something does go a bit wrong!

BertieBotts · 11/06/2021 11:58

The main city hospital here. Although it's more medical than a birth centre it's the only place you can get gas and air plus they have several pools!

In the UK I'd probably opt for a birth centre/MLU if available.

Ava50x · 11/06/2021 12:06

@WolfMother326 I've had all 3 in the MLu which is alongside the labour ward at my hospital. Keeping fingers crossed for #4 as well! I'm also considering a home birth, but will decide in labour simply because it depends on childcare arrangements. I do like the MLU very much and have had very positive experiences all 3 times.
As others have mentioned, its wherever you will feel most secure that's best for you!

lucyrp · 11/06/2021 12:17

@WolfMother326 my midwife led unit is an hour away from either of the nearest hospitals 🙈

wimbler · 11/06/2021 12:21

I was hoping for birth centre VBAC but been told it will be labour ward unless I can convince my consultant and midwife to let me. Got a meeting with the birth reflections midwife next week and consultant on 6th July so fingers crossed. At very least I’m hoping a compromise can be met and they’ll let me use the pool on labour ward if it’s available.
We are moving in with my parents this weekend as we are starting building work. Can’t fault the timing 🙄😂

BertieBotts · 11/06/2021 12:50

I need sanitary towels for my under boob sweat. Someone needs to invent this. Maybe like a bra made of period pants?

Inmypjsagain · 11/06/2021 13:22

@lucyrp so I was going to separate my stuff and baby stuff out in 2 separate bags within the suitcase, do you think that’s a bad idea? Oh I hope it’s not nappy practice, we don’t have any! I’m not sure what I’m expecting of this course 😂

Inmypjsagain · 11/06/2021 13:24

@BertieBotts mine is under boob and cleavage sweat! I guess you could stick a panty liner in the under cup of the bra 😬

lucyrp · 11/06/2021 13:24

@Inmypjsagain if they're in seperate bags inside one big bag I can't see why that would be a problem! I'm guessing that's what they'll do as with my first they asked a few of the dads to put a nappy on a doll they had in the centre but maybe because of Covid they're asking you to bring your own doll?🤨 I also feel way ahead of myself in some aspects as I have like 4 packs of nappies, 2 of which were given to me by a friend who's baby grew out of them 🙈

Whatshouldbemyusername · 11/06/2021 13:25

@Inmypjsagain
thanks darling. That's very helpful. It's only 20 min or so drive from mine and at the moment am with St. Thomas and it's getting harder to go on the train. I had to go in this week for reduced movement and growth scan and it was a mission to get to and I'm not too comfortable on the trains without the vaccine too.

I spoke to them and they said that I can swap to them. I've had a low risk pregnancy so far so I am hoping I'm ok there. Thanks so much for the detailed experience. When are you due again?xx

Ps - I've reposted as I posted in the old thread by mistake x

Caz1226 · 11/06/2021 13:49

Hi everyone
I’ve made a start on my hospital bag as well although I’m doing a primark and M&S haul this weekend to get the final bits I need- I would rather be organised one less thing to think about
I’m counting down the weeks now until maternity only 7 to go!
Is anyone else finding themselves daydreaming about what their baby will look like- I just can’t wait to see him! I’m convinced he will have be hairy with dark hair as both me and my partner are very dark haired but who knows!

Inmypjsagain · 11/06/2021 13:57

@Whatshouldbemyusername I waffle on in this thread and another poster gives her experience too: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/pregnancy/4249813-Choosing-a-hospital-in-London-where-do-we-go?msgid=107525890 I don’t know the route you take in but it can be a bit trafficky- like everywhere in London I suppose! Not sure what the nearest station is to there though. I’m due on 10th Aug! Sorry to hear you’ve gone in for reduced movement though, it’s stressful isn’t it! Hope all went ok.

@lucyrp ah the course was moved to online so we’re doing in on zoom, so I guess itll be a bit different (and I can’t help but think a bit awkward too but let’s see!) yeah If you’re being given nappies why not take them? I should probably give them some thought but figure in an emergency we could quickly buy some if needed, but not so easy to get a car seat last minute (well… if youre like me and spend 29 hours reading up about the different types before making a decision you can’t buy last minute 🙃🙃🙃)

@wimbler how long do you think your build will go on for? Sure your parents will be happy to have you back with them a for a bit! 😊

biscuitcat · 11/06/2021 14:04

@Inmypjsagain yes we've had two sessions now. Our WhatsApp group was pretty quiet too, apart from people introducing themselves, but after the first session we set up a mums group (the dads were meant to set one up too, don't think that's happened yet!) which has been more active, and we've arranged to meet up next week which should hopefully be lovely. The second session definitely felt more natural after we'd been chatting on the mums group - most of us ended up hanging around for a while after it ended having a chat which was lovely. It definitely not the same as in person, which would be so lovely, but I think being able to meet up does make a difference. I like that it's lots of people very close by too - where we are is quite spread out so if I did a hospital antenatal class people could be from far and wide which (for me) would defeat the point. Good luck for it, I hope you have a nice group! Xx

Inmypjsagain · 11/06/2021 14:45

@biscuitcat sounds like you’re having a good experience so far with the people! Did you have one person taking the lead or does everyone seem quite social? But thank you- I hope they’re a good bunch too! 😊

Millymay13 · 11/06/2021 15:04

@Whatshouldbemyusername have you recently changed to flip flops or really flat shoes? I remember getting some flat shoes for a hospital placement and having horrible heel pain…not ideal walking round a hospital! I now make sure I wear shoes/sandals with a slightly higher heel section to the toe section and not had a problem since.
Or maybe do you think it could be the beginnings of plantar fasciitis? Maybe because your weight has increased due to baby?
Or possibly neither of those will help and a good massage will sort you out!

PurplePansy05 · 11/06/2021 16:06

@Whatshouldbemyusername Some trainers do this to me as well, I think @Millymay13 is making a very good point. It could be the flat shoes in combination with added weight and the fact it is distributed differently now and we walk differently as well.

I sometimes feel I wobble like a Russian doll 🙄 Not to mention getting up from my desk, I have to go slow because my pelvis hurts and it feels sort of stuck? Is anyone else getting this after being sat down for a while?

@wimbler May the force be with you Flowers I've lost my shower today, thank God we're going away and I'm praying they'll sort out the new one before we're back! xx

PurplePansy05 · 11/06/2021 16:09

@Inmypjsagain If they tell me next month at the NCT to get a doll or a stuffed toy for the nappy training I'm gonna get my cat. There's no way I'm buying a blimming doll or a toy now for this, and there's categorically not one of them in our house 😂 xx
