Silk Fred, girls! I just bought a load from there, including a dress for a wedding we've been invited to later on this year and I'm very impressed. Lots of nice maternity and nursing dresses xx

Daffodil21 · 10/06/2021 10:34

Oh also on the heat thing - I saw Dr Kahn advertising a neck fan thing on tv this morning - I've bought one for my hospital bag in case I'm in for ages as I've heard horror stories about hospitals being so warm! I just searched 'neck fan' on Amazon and bought the one with the best reviews. I thought they'd be more expensive but it was £25 which is worth it if it does the job! I'll let you know what it's like when it arrives

@lucyrp don't say that!! I'm hoping my due date is wrong anyway as based of my LMP there is a whole 6 days difference which I feel is quite a big discrepancy!

biscuitcat · 10/06/2021 10:41

@Ready2020 she basically said it was down to how I feel! I'd be driving (as the train is far too expensive!) and on my own though as DH is away for work - so I think I'm going to play it by ear as apart from anything I don't know how comfortable a very long drive that heavily pregnant will be! I'd love to go so I'm hoping all will feel alright.

lucyrp · 10/06/2021 11:09

@wimbler my due date is actually 5 days earlier than if I go by my due dates but only thought about that recently and got annoyed as it means I have longer to wait 🙄

Inmypjsagain · 10/06/2021 11:23

Honestly with all these people telling me how early they were born I’m scared to go too far from the hospital now! Labour is generally isn’t quick so an hour should be okay- and I generally err on the side of caution!

Clothes wise I’ve gone for H&M as not too expensive, but I’ve noticed their sizing is really generous. I bought a black tiered tent like dress in a non maternity medium and could have easily fitted into a small. Picked up some dresses from Vinted too! Round the house I’m just in big pjs, very glam!

@biscuitcat she’s an Amanda!!! That makes sense! Amazing how we all know someone like that... 😂

Inmypjsagain · 10/06/2021 11:24

I love those dresses @Daffodil21 I forgot about fat face!! I’ve seen a few people talking about these neck fans now, I’ve also seen a fan that fits on your phone so you can be texting/watching Netflix or whatever and having it blow in your face lol

PurplePansy05 · 10/06/2021 11:50

I thought I was OTT when I bough a mini fan off Amazon for my hospital bag, but you've all made me feel better now 😊 I also have a little spritz set from My Expert Midwife. I think they're overpriced, but I had a couple of offers, 20% off and a third product free or something like that. I got a cooling spray for my face, a spritz for bits (yes, those) and something else that I can't remember. Some days I feel like using them now tbh, too hot. All my hospital stuff like nighties and slippers came from Amazon too. Other top tips I read somewhere was to get a thin dressing gown and bring flip flops for showering. I wouldn't have thought of that. Pampers website has a handy hospital bag checklist too 😊 xx

wimbler · 10/06/2021 12:38

While we are on the topic of hospital bags make sure you pack a long charging cable - the plugs are often miles away from the beds! Also a water bottle with a straw is great. button up nighties are good for feeding too. and lip balm! i didn't use any but the gas and air can make your lips v dry - the lansinoh nipple balm is the best lip balm I've every used and is dual use!
another tip I read is to get your birth partner to pack the bag so they know where everything is without you having to give directions mid labour!

Inmypjsagain · 10/06/2021 13:15

I’ve already got my long cable for charging! And a charging bank tbjng. Everyone has recommended flip flops to me too. Lots of snacks. Peppermint oil/tea and anything else you can use for potential trapped wind (apparently common with c sections). I’ve been recommended the lil lets maternity pads for post birth too. I was recommended mints too cos a friend had a really long birth (5 days in total) and she said she didn’t brush her teeth at all in that time... hoping it won’t happen to me!!! In fact I think she’s sending me her hospital bag list so I’ll share it incase anyone finds it useful! She had a July baby so I’m hoping she can give guidance on clothes (from the pics her daughter pretty much only wore nappies!)

alittlexmasmagic · 10/06/2021 13:34

Hospital bags; spare change for vending machines x

Daffodil21 · 10/06/2021 14:20

@Inmypjsagain I've bought some mini listerine mouthwash just in case too! The strong one 😂

OP posts:
lucyrp · 10/06/2021 15:06

@alittlexmasmagic most hospital vending machines now you can use contactless/ apple pay which is handy! Cheap 99p flip flops from primark are already ready to go in my bag, along with some cheap slippers too. Maternity pads from boots are great and the Tesco's ones look the same. Need to get the reusable boots breast pads also

Inmypjsagain · 10/06/2021 16:08

@Daffodil21 good plan 😂

Must admit that didn’t really occur to me. Imagine how sweaty you must get? Need a lot of deodorant and dry shampoo. I guess she didn’t shower for 5 days either, I would stink! Imagine I probably won’t care at that point though...

Ready2020 · 10/06/2021 17:21

Right it's my mission to get my bag ready over the next week. In laws visiting this weekend though so not much time to do much. Might just end up getting most of it online.

wimbler · 10/06/2021 18:52

I’m dreading being in hospital in July. It was hot in the December when #1 was born. Must invest in a fan to pack!

BertieBotts · 10/06/2021 19:03

The hand held battery fan was a godsend when I was in labour with DS2. Also hair ties if you have long enough hair to tie up. Change of tops (though I just got naked fairly quickly).

I made a whole playlist of songs that I like but actually I think what would have been better is the kind of music they play in new age shops. It's just more helpful for getting you into a calm zone.

Daffodil21 · 10/06/2021 19:33

Anyone who's had a CS - how often can you take peppermint capsules and how many do you go through? Odd question I know, but going to leave half a pack behind for mum as can't imagine I'll need more than half a pack? I think there's like 90 in there?!

Just got home and I don't know wtf has happened to my feet - they're so swollen in this heat!!!!! (Ignore the blue on the right, I dropped a bottle on my foot in the shower 😂 I didn't even attempt to pick it after either!)

Isn't pregnancy glamorous!

Oh also Asda has 3 for 2 on travel bottles and they had mini dry shampoo in there too which seems useful? I'm feeling pretty pleased with my hospital bag list but I bet I've forgotten things I will need and added things that won't get used!

PurplePansy05 · 10/06/2021 19:42

What are peppermint capsules and are they for trapped wind after CS?? xx

notinthestarsigns · 10/06/2021 19:48

You are all very organised sorting your hospital bags! I haven’t got anything ready for mine, starting to worry a little!

lucyrp · 10/06/2021 19:57

@notinthestarsigns don't worry I haven't started yet either! The only thing I know is which bags I'm going to pack for me and baby 😂

BertieBotts · 10/06/2021 20:17

I'm not doing a hospital bag yet as it will just sit around and get in the way. I'll probably do one in about 4-6 weeks' time.

My feet get swollen when I get too hot, drinking more seems to help. My doctor offered me compression socks but I declined :o

If it happens a lot or in conjunction with headaches you should mention it to your midwife as it can be a sign of pre-eclampsia.

Smallbean27 · 10/06/2021 20:24

I'm going to start getting mine ready, personally I would wait a little but DH said he would feel happier if it was done sooner rather than later.

Daffodil21 · 10/06/2021 20:27

@PurplePansy05 yes they are for trapped wind after CS - I've just seen them on lots of lists so added to mine!

@BertieBotts thanks, my mum has a blood pressure checked so going to use that just to make sure it's just the heat! (I'm sure it is)

@notinthestarsigns @lucyrp the only reason I'm packing mine as soon as I get back up to Scotland is because my husband and SIL arrived at 33 weeks. It can just sit in the entrance hall cupboard until needed!

OP posts:
lucyrp · 10/06/2021 20:28

@Daffodil21 the bag I will be using for my hospital bag I'm going to be using to go away next weekend so can't do anything with it yet 😂
