Hi all,

Hope everyone's growth scans were OK and babies doing well!

I was wondering what food you are planning to pack in your hospital bags? You'd think with baby #4 I'd be experienced but I find this a hassle every time. I never know what to pack and inevitably whatever food I do take I find i'm not in the mood of after birth...

So would love some practical suggestions!!

alittlexmasmagic · 22/06/2021 11:42

@Ava50x I went through many punnets of grapes during/after birth (great for avoiding constipation too). The mini soreens were good for a quick fix. Lucozade sport went down well. Other than that DH ate most of it 😂

Ava50x · 22/06/2021 12:13

@alittlexmasmagic thanks for that! Grapes do sound nice now! I think that whatever I will take I won't be interested in after birth- sounds crazy but I think because I packed it when I was still pregnant it becomes off-putting. I know this makes no sense!!

alittlexmasmagic · 22/06/2021 12:52

@Ava50x my SIL advised not to take anything you normally really enjoy, as once you've thrown it up (potentially a few times) you'll never look at it the same again. A bit like that alcoholic drink we've all vowed "never again" x

WolfMother326 · 22/06/2021 13:22

Thanks @PurplePansy05 - yes, I meant cm not inches! Hoping the growth scan will be a bit more reassuring. The midwife may have measured wrong, this was the first time I had a midwife looking after me who did not seem to really care or be interested, have had better luck until now.

@Jessicapebbles good luck with the growth scan and scheduling your c section. What's the reason for scheduling it? I think I missed this.
I'm also waking up at 3 or 4 every day for an hour or two due to hard kicks and maybe just needing to pee and move around, but managing to get back to sleep til 7:30 most days. so grateful I'm still working from home!

Whatshouldbemyusername · 22/06/2021 13:25

@WolfMother326 same! I've got 6 weeks to Mat leave and can't come any sooner! My manager is super supportive though so he's asked me to take let him know if I can't work today. Am still working - somehow feel guilty calling in sick! Ugh. X

@lucyrp oh that's such an inconvenience! Sorry babe x

@PurplePansy05 I'm in between hospital moves and I have my first booking appointment at the new hospital on Friday but they have Also invited me for a scan next Monday. Next Monday I'm supposed to be having my 32 week MW appointment at the first hospital too! Will know on Friday whether I still have to go for the MW appointment on Monday or just stick to everything at the new hospital.

@Jessicapebbles sorry babe. Hope you feel better and she moves abit so that you're comfortable 30th July is round the corner. Eek. Exciting x

@Smurf123 aaaw that's a lovely healthy baby! Beautiful. The first hospital I was at was going to refer me for physio food due to lower back pains but now that I'm changing hospitals I bet am at sq 1 and it will take forever x

Jessicapebbles · 22/06/2021 13:55

I have Crohn’s disease with a long history of surgery so unfortunately not allowed to give birth naturally! I had a great experience with my first so very happy for another section..sat waiting for my scan now!

@Whatshouldbemyusername Thank you, I’m really feeling it at the moment - I’m not used to bigger babies either! My first was a tiddler, I feel like this girl is going to walk out of me haha!

Jessicapebbles · 22/06/2021 13:55

Sorry @WolfMother326 my tag didn’t load! Xx

BertieBotts · 22/06/2021 14:08

One of my friends (a mother of four) brought me a bag of dried mixed fruit, apricots, prunes, apples etc and it was the best post birth snack ever! Not crumby, no mess on my hands, energy dense and (she said knowingly) helps on that first postnatal poo :o

Something like nutri grain bars would be good too. Maybe even protein bars if you like them? I didn't want anything crumby because I was living in a hospital bed. It was hot so chocolate was a nightmare. Fresh fruit like grapes etc is great but I'd probably want it brought in afterwards rather than it being sat in a bag for days. If you have someone bringing food in, little cooked sausage like for picnics is good. Gummy haribo type things are good too.

Smurf123 · 22/06/2021 14:53

Anyone discussed c-sections due to their size/ babys size?? Everyone in work keeps telling me that at 5ft with size 2 feet I'm never giving birth naturally to a baby over 5lb. Hmm
With my first the midwife had said to be about having a section and originally I was to be booked in for one at 38 weeks. Ds was at the time measuring big, I'm only just 5ft and dh is 6ft4.
As it happened I was induced early at 37 weeks so ds was a teeny 5lb baby so they let me try naturally on the agreement that I was on constant monitoring and I they wouldn't let it go too long.
This time round I've seen a different midwife and consultant each time and it hasn't been mentioned as yet. Part of me is thinking I would prefer just to get a planned section booked as id rather not do the natural labour for hours and then end up an emcs. But the other part of me wants to get home to ds as soon as possible after as I've never spent the night away from him 🙈 which may be more likely after a natural birth than a cs.

Daffodil21 · 22/06/2021 15:43

My husband said he would bring me a mcds cheeseburger 😂 not sure how well that would go down with the hosp, or if it's even allowed 😂

@Smurf123 annoyingly I was following a thread on this earlier today and I literally just clicked unwatch on it (I'm 5ft 9 but clicked it as it was about ELCSs but the posts were mostly about mother's height) if I see it pop up again ill post the link here

Being short/with small feet doesn't mean you can't give birth to a bigger baby, I think that's meant to be an old wives' tale. I would ask your midwife whether it's considered a concern, as they will have access to the medical evidence anyway.

PurplePansy05 · 22/06/2021 17:10

Right so I had my growth scan & a consultant appointment and to say I'm surprised is an understatement 🤣 My baby boy has gone from measuring at 50th centile at 28 weeks to being a giant at 95th centile and he weighs over 5.5 lbs 😳😳😳 The sonographer said "put in the notes measured three times" and "oh, this is going to go into red". I was lying there worrying his growth was restricted, but then I went to see the consultant and she went "oh, you're having a chunky monkey! Have you thought about a C-section???" 😳😳😳 And so they're sending me for OGTT first thing tomorrow. I've already had GTT at 28 weeks which came back fine so I'd be shocked if it turned out I developed gestational diabetes now. No symptoms and I didn't put much weight on. But in any event, she said if on top of that I have GD then they'd put me on metformin and a planned section is very likely.

I am pretty shocked! We're a family of pretty petite people, so I don't know where all this has come from 🙈🙈🙈 Both, DH and I, weighed less at birth than he does now! Has anyone had GD in pregnancy? And/or a giant baby? xx

BertieBotts · 22/06/2021 17:15

Don't panic! The measurements they take are notoriously unreliable and apparently open to interpretation - it's very possible that your previous sonographer erred on the side of lower and your current one has erred on the side of higher.

Good that they are sending you for a GD check anyway, just in case. But I have heard SO many stories of women being told they are going to have a giant baby and then the baby comes out perfectly normal sized.

Ava50x · 22/06/2021 17:17

@BertieBotts thanks for the really useful advice! Going to screenshot your answers.

@PurplePansy05 that sounds super strange! How did baby suddenly become big?

PurplePansy05 · 22/06/2021 17:20

I really have no idea @Ava50x 🙈 Not what I expected to hear today 🤣 But maybe @BertieBotts is right, maybe he is actually closer to average...I hope so! xx

Ava50x · 22/06/2021 17:34

@PurplePansy05 Truth is with my first I had that- they told me he'd gone up to the 75th centile from the 10th, and drove me a bit mad because I was measuring small but he was big, etc. He was born at 39 weeks weighing 6lbs 3oz so the scan was definitely unreliable- they had estimated 7.5lbs. He was very long though so that skewed his weight on scans.
Don't get too concerned about scans, they're not known for their reliability in terms of estimating baby's weight!

Smurf123 · 22/06/2021 18:55

I don't think I'll see a midwife again between now and birth. Last midwife told me not to bother coming to see them if I was going to see the consultant the same week.
Though will see the Dr in 2 weeks so I'll ask them. I keep meaning to ask but then I'm so relieved to see that baby is growing well that I forget and leave. 🙈
Thanks @Daffodil21 I'll have a look for the thread too.
My hospital doesn't get you to make birth plans really either. And ultimately the only one I have is whatever gets the baby here safely.

@PurplePansy05 great to hear your growth scan went well. Are you or dh tall? Ds had long legs like @Ava50x said so that threw his measurements out a far bit.

PurplePansy05 · 22/06/2021 20:05

@Smurf123 Nope, we're both on the shorter side with (sadly) average legs 🙈 That's reassuring @Ava50x, thank you xx

We'll see. They probably exaggerated the measurements a tad as you all say, but still it's a bit of a surprise he's bigger than we both thought 🤭 xx

lucyrp · 22/06/2021 20:57

Oh my goodness panic over. My car came up with the drive train malfunction error message this morning and went all juddery and stopped moving and couldn't get it to go at all then it turned off and wouldn't turn back on. Spoke to a few people who said it would be thousands to fix, had a friend over tonight who's a mechanic to look at it and he's sorted it out 😅 it was an EGR valve or something which just needs cleaning out or a new one but it's only a couple of hundred as opposed to stupid money. Thank god!

I have my GTT on Friday not looking forward to that 😬 I haven't put any weight on as such so I doubt it is diabetes but still worried

alittlexmasmagic · 22/06/2021 21:15

@lucyrp fab news!! Cars are way too fancy, I remember my DPF doing similar and it cost me a small fortune to get repaired. Well done to your mechanic friend.
I had my GTT three weeks ago and the bruise has only just gone, I think the nurse was in a rush x

BertieBotts · 22/06/2021 22:00

Back to hospital bag talk. Someone has just told me these are available in the UK now. I used them after my last pregnancy and they were no lie the most comfortable amazing thing ever.

They are on Prime today for a 40 pack but you don't need that many. About 15-20 would be fine. I used them in conjunction with maternity pads for the first few days and then on their own. They're loose and comfy.

I am a dress size 10/12 pre pregnancy and I found the Large size the most comfortable, so I'd go for your pre-pregnancy size and get the next one up according to their sizing.

BertieBotts · 22/06/2021 22:00

I don't know if amazon is the cheapest - probably they also have them in Boots/supermarkets etc but so you know what to look for.

Millymay13 · 22/06/2021 22:04

@Daffodil21 thank you for sharing that thread. I’m short and slim, and whilst I know the theory that I’d be unlikely to grow a baby that couldn’t make it out, it’s lovely to hear stories of women in the same situation who didn’t have a problem.

It seems like when you’re pregnant people only want to tell you about the births that were hard or went wrong…or even worse half of a bad story! I must remember this for when I’m around pregnant women in the future so I can be careful with my words!
