Well it is correct advice because it's not been tested on babies specifically. But there is growing evidence of no negative impact on babies and the added benefit of them being born with some level of antibodies, much like with other vaccines ordinarily recommended to pregnant women. I have to say, I cannot imagine getting a chest infection now, not to mention covid. My lungs feel so squished I don't know how I'd breathe. I couldn't deal with long covid and a newborn either, plus all the recent stuff about increased risk of stillbirth or premature birth reaffirmed my initial decision to get it. But I think we've all given it a lot of thought and there are of course risks and benefits that need to be weighed up and are a matter of personal choice. xx

Smurf123 · 18/06/2021 15:58

@PurplePansy05 I think that's a good idea I might ask if anyone comes back.. I've been on ctg monitor in a closed room for an hour now.
The placenta is and always has been a worry for me as it's what stopped working for ds.
I do have a booked growth scan with consultant on Tuesday though so it's really not too far away

PurplePansy05 · 18/06/2021 16:03

I thought you had the scans scheduled @Smurf123, I remember you saying about the issues you've had before. I think because it's another day this is happening, it won't do harm if they have a good look. My growth scan is on Tuesday too. You're right, not too far away, but since you're already there, they could do it for you now. All OAUs can do emergency scans if needed. xx

Ready2020 · 18/06/2021 16:03

@PurplePansy05 ah yes I've had run ins with a receptionist before at an old Dr who refused to give me an appointment unless I told her exactly and in great detail what was wrong with me. I said that's for the Dr only thank you!

biscuitcat · 18/06/2021 16:13

We've had lots of vaccine chat, haven't we! @Ready2020 that's really unprofessional of the doctor's receptionist, especially given that the official advice is now to get it (and I can't imagine she's medically trained!). I had the AZ vaccine (before they changed the advice) - I figured that they weren't concerned about my clotting risk from a decade on the pill and being pregnant, both of which are far higher than the AZ jab (and even more so for Pfizer and Moderna which don't have the concerns), so it was the right balance for me, especially if it gives baby antibodies.

@PurplePansy05 I so agree about chest infections now!! Everything feels all squashed up, it's horrible, so I imagine you're just right that it would be even worse.

@Smurf123 that sounds really scary for you, I'm glad you went back in for reassurance, absolutely the right thing to do. I can't remember if it was someone on one of our threads or elsewhere that I heard it, but I think I read that midwives assume that we'll go in for any worries, no matter how minor, which is what they want us to do, and were really surprised to hear that women can really debate and agonise over whether to 'bother' them. Xx

alittlexmasmagic · 18/06/2021 16:27

Eurgh!! The dreaded receptionist preliminary trials. They wind me up so much. I'd had a consult with a GP about DS but didn't quite understand what was said so rang up for a second opinion. She was so rude to me when I asked for this until I said he'd had a prolapse and was frankly scared silly and she changed her tune. You shouldn't need to divulge so much.

@Ready2020 I might buy it in a larger size as it's perfect for autumn, whereas the yellow I felt was more summery x

Daffodil21 · 18/06/2021 16:42

@Smurf123 I hadn't realised your history, sorry. That sounds super stressful and they should be checking absolutely everything they can. I hope you feel looked after x

PurplePansy05 · 18/06/2021 16:57

FWIW, I didn't realise how often and common it is to be checked over until I spoke to my friends who have young babies. One is the most laid back person ever and nothing worries her, the other is more risk averse. One went in to be checked over 12 times for various things, including reduced movements, pains etc., the other one 7 times with a breech baby and anterior placenta, and was even kept overnight. So the one thing I took from that is that every pregnancy is different and ultimately only we know when we feel something might not be right. The only thing we can do is to get it checked over and there's nothing wrong with that. It's about baby's and our health after all. Equally, if there are no concerns at all, I'm sure there are plenty of mums that never feel the need to go in and that's perfectly valid too. I went in once and asked for another CTG at my regular appointment a week later, it wasn't an issue at all. I hope I'll never have to go in again as I'm sure we all do. But there's no need to feel like we're a nuisance, it's not the case Flowers xx

Smurf123 · 18/06/2021 20:55

Thank you all.. I'm home again. They did the fibronectin test as they could see from the ctg the tightenings and that they were pretty regular. More so than last night too. Results of fibronectin was negative. They have said I'm also dehydrated and had ketones in urine. They've sent sample away. Doctor examined me also and she said they are reassured im not in immediate risk of preterm labour but that my uterus is irritated so I'm to go home rest and drink plenty of fluids and come back if I've any more worries or any bleeding/ fluid loss etc. Said they didn't feel scan was necessary at this point as I'm being scanned on Tuesday and that she did get a senior Dr to look at all my notes / trace today and they were happy for me to be sent home.
They've taken another swab too and sent away to check for infection in case that's what causing the irritation.
I feel like I was listened to a lot better today and reassured that they were more thorough in doing all the tests. Whereas last night when a Dr finally saw me it felt like he was just going yea its 2am I'm tired go home as the midwife hadn't been happy with the trace but then the Dr completely dismissed everything she said.
I am glad to be home and looking forward to an early night. Hoping baby stays put happy and healthy for another few weeks. 4 more weeks to be considered full term!

lucyrp · 18/06/2021 21:49

@alittlexmasmagic I have bought the smile and black and white Dalmatian print ones behind the yellow!

MM1993 · 18/06/2021 23:20

Guess who's now at the hospital attached to a CTG machine for reduced movement - what fun this is 🙄

Whatshouldbemyusername · 18/06/2021 23:27

@Smurf123 am sorry you've had this experience but happy to know you and baby are well. Try having some lime and sugar/salt water - it will hydrate you well and so will
Coconut water. It's the heat and humidity as well. Am sure your urine samples will be ok. Praying for you and your little one. All is well and will continue to be so xx

@MM1993 oh dear. It's very common. As @PurplePansy05 said earlier we've all been there and there's been more women than we can imagine who have to go in for reduced movement. It's normal to worry and the hospitals are very helpful to make you feel like it's all ok. Keep us posted x

MM1993 · 18/06/2021 23:33

@Whatshouldbemyusername - I seem to have come at just the right time, I'm the only one in here! So came straight in and got hooked up to machine for half an hour - midwife says everything looks fine, baby was moving around just less than usual today but that I was right to come in - home time now. If it happens again, I think I'll also pick the evening to come rather than the day

lucyrp · 19/06/2021 03:19

Managed to convince myself I haven't felt as much movement now today as seeing so many of you concerned over it but I'm sure I have I'm just worrying. I am on holiday over 2 hours away from home too so no going in for me. Must pull big girl pants up and stop worrying myself 🙄

PurplePansy05 · 19/06/2021 06:12

@lucyrp @MM1993 I had several mornings of what I thought might be a reduced movements day because he was quieter, but by the afternoon it was fine, I just decided to watch him carefully and took breaks to count them kicks, lie down on the side if I could, cold sugary drink etc. Sometimes we're more preoccupied and just don't notice them and I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case if you've just gone away @lucyrp. See how you go this morning Flowers I agree with @MM1993 that late evenings tend to be great at OAU, when I went it was quiet too and they hooked me up straight away, but I think it depends on your baby's pattern, sometimes not worth waiting that long. My LO is always more active in the afternoon and eve so it makes sense to go in later if needed IMO. I can also tell he's awake when I wake up and during/after me having food, usully, but not always. I very rarely feel anything at all overnight, I'm a deep sleeper. Only if I'm awake because of my hip, really. Does anyone feel their LOs overnight at all? I have no idea what he does at night 😂 xx

PurplePansy05 · 19/06/2021 06:19

@Smurf123 The whole thing sounds stressful, I'm sorry you're going through this. Glad they've listened now though. Lots of rest for you this weekend. ❤ I will be thinking of you on Tuesday, what time is your scan? Will they tell you the blood & swab results then too? xx

lucyrp · 19/06/2021 06:49

@PurplePansy05 I get woken by kicks from my baby in the night! And when I wrote that message late last night I talked to them and they started kicking away then. I just don't know what I'd actually class as reduced movements as I've never counted the kicks or anything as they're all over the place. I just know they move throughout the day x

PurplePansy05 · 19/06/2021 07:10

@lucyrp Ah that's great 😊 I don't actually know either, I wouldn't tell you no of movements per hour or per day. I don't count throughout the day, only if I notice he hasn't moved for a while. I read somewhere to count how long it takes to get to 10 movements, it's the Count the Kicks method: countthekicks.org/. It helps me when he seems quiet cause I know now that when I really focus, I should be able to count 10 easily within less than an hour, probably 30-40 mins max, and that's when I know it's the usual for him. xx

BertieBotts · 19/06/2021 07:21

Lucy you can go to any hospital wherever you are, it doesn't need to be your local one.

It's ALWAYS worth going in if you have any concerns as they can just have a check - if baby is safer out than in then you want to know that ASAP. 9/10 it will be absolutely nothing and you'll just have wasted a few hours, but better that than the alternative.

Daffodil21 · 19/06/2021 07:34

@PurplePansy05 if I went in every time I didn't feel 10 kicks within the hour I would genuinely always be in the hospital!

@lucyrp as @BertieBotts says, you can go anywhere to get checked. I asked my midwife what I should do if I was concerned while in Suffolk and she said call the local unit x

OP posts:
PurplePansy05 · 19/06/2021 07:39

@Daffodil21 It's not 10 every hour. It's a method that suggests counting how long it takes to get to 10 movements once you think the baby may have been quieter and every baby will have a different time frame of getting to 10. As long it's within that pattern, it's notmal for that particular baby. xx

Daffodil21 · 19/06/2021 07:47

@PurplePansy05 ah I see. Mine is so all over the place that it still wouldn't work for me! I have read about that a while ago actually but ignored it as knew it would just cause more worry 🙈🙈

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 19/06/2021 07:59

It doesn't really matter which method you use as long as you have some awareness of what your baby's normal movements are :) I def couldn't tell you numbers or times, but do have a sense of what's normal and when he would have been too quiet for too long.

Whatshouldbemyusername · 19/06/2021 08:41

Just as everyone said following your baby rough patterns is more important. When I went in for reduced movements the MW told me the 10 kicks in an hour is not clear cut as all babies are different. However as @PurplePansy05 said I do use the kick counter to count 10 kicks within the hour. This only works as I kind of know baby's movements now. Baby is usually more active for me in the afternoon and evening.

Also the MW did tell me that if you count 20 kicks a day at two different intervals that's good - remember all babies are different. Having something sweet to snack on usually does it for me.

However as @BertieBotts pointed out. It's best to just go in to make sure alls ok. It might be a slight inconvenience but it's the best option for your peace of mind and knowing alls well with baby x

Ava50x · 20/06/2021 11:26

@Smurf123 hope all is OK with you and baby. These things are super stressful aren't they?

Hope everyone's had a good weekend. I'm wondering if anyone else is suffering from breathlessness? I find the slightest thing causes breathlessness- like singing a song to my kids, going up the stairs. Can't remember having this in previous pregnancies. Seeing my midwife Friday so will ask her then but wondering if anyone else has this?
