Hello @PurplePansy05

I was wondering if I could join an August 2021 group as I am due on the 11th of August, 2021.

I am very new to Mums net.

Thank you

PurplePansy05 · 22/02/2021 11:43

@WolfMother326 I heard about that swab too, I think it's meant to establish the risk of preterm labour. An internal scan will do the same, I guess it will allow for measurements too and it will check your cervix competency. My private consultant pressed on my tummy to see how the cervix reacted, he said an incompetent cervix (ie a weaker one) may start dilating under pressure which would be visible on the scan. I guess in your case they don't actually know the lenght or the competency yet so it's best to have the scan. I think if it's incompetent they may recommend a stitch or the beloved Cyclogest pessaries as progesterone supports the cervix.

Agree that ideally the screening should be available to all pregnant women but it probably comes down to money. A swab analysis can't be that costly though!

On another swab note, I think I will have a strep B swab privately closer to the end of the pregnancy, I don't think it's routinely offered in Wales yet, which is a shame as they've been talking about introducing it for many years xx

Whatshouldbemyusername · 22/02/2021 11:46

@WolfMother326 and @PurplePansy05 100% agree with you both. I think it should be routine but yes it may be down to costs.

I am also going to check strep B privately closer to time as they don’t offer it here either under the NHS x

northernsquirrel · 22/02/2021 11:51

@Redskinsucks and @ElonaWise welcome ladies!

Just had my dating scan today and they think I'm almost a week further on than I thought. Will try and alter my due date from 31st August to 26th August without messing up the existing list!

LyraShaeLilly · 22/02/2021 12:00

Yes will ask them to check at 20 week scan, Didn’t realise it could be so easily checked on a scan. Group B swab should also be routine. I will be getting a private test for this.

BertieBotts · 22/02/2021 12:07

TBH they do so many tests and swabs in Germany I always feel prodded and poked! Quite liked the hands off NHS approach.

I will prob have the GBS test though (we have to pay for it here as well) because I was positive last time so I don't know if that means I'm more likely to get it again. I'll ask my doctor probably.

Welcome to new posters :) What's your story - is this DC1 or do you have older children? How are things going for you so far?

Carefree1 · 22/02/2021 13:36

It’s so helpful being on here as a first timer. I’d never heard of strep b, nor being a potential issue in pregnancy. It’s seems a home test is only £40, so seems like a sensible option later down the line!

Welcome new ladies 😊

We’ve got Boris’ announcement tonight, but if the news is anything to go by, it’s nothing ground breaking for a while yet. On a positive, it looks as though we’ll be able to get into shops from our 20 week appointments xx

PurplePansy05 · 22/02/2021 14:01

@Carefree1 That's an excellent price, my only thing is I wouldn't trust myself to swab properly so I'll be going back to my clinic where it costs £60 and you get immediate results.

I am waiting impatiently for Drakeford's announcement in about 2.5 weeks, we think he might reopen hairdressers and non-essential retail in Wales then 🤞🤞🤞

MrsB2019x · 22/02/2021 14:18

I really hope so @Carefree1, I am DYING to go and push prams around John Lewis 😂

PurplePansy05 · 22/02/2021 14:51

I'm just reading some leaked info on The Guardian and it looks like our trip to Cornwall in early May won't be happening. Really gutted if this is true 😔 Oh well, I guess I should be used to this by now, will be a long time before we will holiday with the LO considering the prices will likely be ridiculous in the next few years xx

Smurf123 · 22/02/2021 14:54

@BertieBotts my consultants advice this time was to take the antibiotics in labour again without another swab being doing for strep b as I had it last time and apparently the swab test isn't very accurate - standard swab has a 50% false negative rate apparently! Seems to be once you have it you are likely to.always carry it.

BertieBotts · 22/02/2021 15:25

Boo. Oh well I suppose at least it gives me a reason to have the IV Hmm

If I'm going to have to have it again I'm not paying for another test :o

WolfMother326 · 22/02/2021 16:00

I had my cervical US check and all looked normal, measuring at 34mm so they won't need to see me and check again for another 4 weeks. The midwife was very kind and let me peek at the baby for a few seconds, and hear the heartbeat. Always reassuring!

I am with others in hoping we can go to JL and push some prams around at some point! but I am ok with waiting until summer as I live in a tiny flat and nowhere to put things yet anyway Smile planning a spring clear out.

I'm also tempted to buy a nice buggy second hand on facebook marketplace, as I live near some very upscale areas and imagine there might be some spare good condition bugaboos etc. Has anyone done this?

Whatshouldbemyusername · 22/02/2021 16:04

Ladies - hair and nail salons can open earliest from April 12th!

Whatshouldbemyusername · 22/02/2021 16:05

And so does non essential retail! Hello John Lewis!!

Whatshouldbemyusername · 22/02/2021 16:07

I think by the time we’re all due all restrictions will be over and done so we may be the lucky ones to have a nice normal delivery with our partners allowed the whole time ♥️

Rattycliffe · 22/02/2021 16:09

I work in the NHS and was supposed to be getting sent home at 28 weeks, I'm wondering if this will still be in place or not 😕 I was looking forward to relaxing in my garden 🤣

PurplePansy05 · 22/02/2021 16:19

@WolfMother326 Excellent news ❤ Glad all went well xx

Ahhh, I take it back, self-catering holidays reopening on 12 April 🥳🥳🥳 Very pleased! Hope it will be the same or sooner in Wales.

@Whatshouldbemyusername My DH said that. I'm still cautious trying not to get overly excited, but it is looking very promising indeed, I would be so happy if this was true ❤ I am actually feeling quite emotional when I think our babies will be born at the tail end of this pandemic and likely won't have any memories of it, and most importantly they likely won't be affected. I feel extremely fortunate about this 🤞🥰 xx

Alittlexmasmagic · 22/02/2021 16:43

@WolfMother326 great news! I've not bought a 2nd hand one yet... but fully intend on doing so. Love my MB terrain but really want something a bit smaller for chucking in the back of the car.x

northernsquirrel · 22/02/2021 17:00

@PurplePansy05 thanks for updating my EDD x

lucyrp · 22/02/2021 17:03

@WolfMother326 ooo yes definitely recommend second hand ! I bought my pram with DS1 brand new but it wasn't much compared to the prams now it was £500 for the full travel system where as a bugaboo is £1200. You can get lovely second hand ones. Thinking about getting an ICandy peach jet second hand this time maybe if we have extra money.

PurplePansy05 · 22/02/2021 17:14

Can I ask those of you with young children, what would you consider a reasonable spend for all things baby first time round? I mean ut in total, including big stuff like pram, car seats, nursery furniture etc. and small stuff for giving birth, first couple of months for the baby etc. Appreciate this is a how long is a piece of string type question because everyone's personal circumstances are different. But atm I am struggling to see it being less than £3k if I buy decent quality new stuff. It might be closer to £2k if some of it is second hand or if we choose cheaper options/buy on sale. But I can't really see it getting below that, is that too much and I'm going overboard? I really wouldn't want to buy stuff that is gimmicky and completely unnecessary, but even with this approach, the list is already pretty long. xx

Carefree1 · 22/02/2021 17:34

We’ll be whizzing around John Lewis after all ladies 🥳🥳

I totally agree @Whatshouldbemyusername how lovely 💗. Also debating whether it’s too soon to text my hairdresser.... my last rebooked from the first lock down appointment was the day after we went into tier 3/4 whatever it was. So, it’s hideous 😂😂

@PurplePansy05 yay for Cornwall! I’ll be keeping an eye on Wales, desperate to see my grandma and have a day at Tenby then fish and chips at Saundersfoot 🥺

xx

Inmypjsagain · 22/02/2021 17:50

Hi ladies

Coming out if lurkdom to ask how you’re feeling about uk’s restrictions being lifted?

We will all be in the third trimester in June and therefore at the highest risk of our whole pregnancy. Covid risk will be lower by then but the risk won’t have disappeared. My employers certainly won’t let me continue to wfh unless there’s some guidance to back it up, so just feels like we’ll be told to get on and expose ourselves to potential infection? I can’t imagine the 28 shielding will be in place if there’s no restrictions in June...

I know we need to get back to normal but I feel like totally normality is a bit of a shock for only a few months time?!

Maybe it’s just me and my hormones...!

HopefulB · 22/02/2021 18:01

Hi all, Also feeling optimistic re end of restrictions here. I really hope the outdoor pool opens in April!

@Rattycliffe RCOG updated their COVID info on Friday - further info on risks in 3rd trimester, so I’d be surprised if the 28weeks recommendation are relaxed.

On that note.... I’ve just emailed my hairdresser to say I’ll have a small
Window of opportunity between opening & 28weeks and PLEASE can she fit me in at a quiet time?!

re costs, I think you could spend hideous amounts! All in all though my opinion is that baby isn’t going to notice, all that matters is food, & love. A lot of the ‘must haves’ didn’t exist when our mums had us, so I think a lot depends on how much time you have and what you’re prepared to compromise on. If you don’t want to compromise then you’ll end up spending masses! I’m put off by the shear amount of plastic most things seem to involve, so will definitely be looking at what I could get secondhand for this reason.
