Thought I'd start a new thread

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Amani - I have always wanted students present because they stay with you, rather than rushing off to other women or finihsing their shift. When I had dd2 I had a student who stayed with me to the end - an extra 4 hours (poor lady).

mixedmama · 16/11/2007 13:25

Suey - nappy bins IMO a waste, just chuck them out.

Amani · 16/11/2007 13:25

I work at a University in the department where they train midwives and nurses and they are mostly placed at the same teaching hospital, where I will be giving birth. Everytime I've been into hospital and had dealings with student nurses/midwives I always see them again at Uni when they come in for theory.

I just don't fancy the idea of a student having a good look up my fanjo and then bumping into them in the corridor at work (I know they will prob have forgotton, but I won't have!)

skidaddle · 16/11/2007 13:26

oh gosh amani - don't blame you! what is your job btw - I always mean to ask you

mixedmama · 16/11/2007 13:30

In the spirit of sharing pasted mine below altho may refine some points now I have seen Skids.

This is my birth plan in an ideal world, although I am of course completely flexible as I know that giving birth is not predictable.

· Please could we keep internal examinations to as few as possible.

· I would like to use the birthing pool, but don?t want to go in too early as I would like to actually give birth in the pool.

· I would like to use Gas and Air for pain relief but would like to be encouraged to wait as long as possible before starting to use it.

· I DO NOT want pethidine or diamorphine under any circumstances.

· I do not want an epidural, and would prefer to ask for it rather than be offered it.

· I would like the cord to stop pulsating before it is cut.

· I would like my husband to be offered the opportunity to cut the cord.

· I am happy to have the injection to deliver the placenta.

· I am happy for the baby to have the Vitamin K injection.

· If possible, we would like some private time after the birth.

· I would prefer to be discharged as soon as possible after the birth.

INTERVENTIONS / C SECTION PLANS

· I am hoping to avoid an episiotomy and hope the water will help.

· I would prefer ventouse to forceps although of course if it is necessary I will go with the flow.

· In the event of a C Section I would like my husband to be able to accompany me at all times.

· I would prefer epidural or spinal and would like to avoid a general at all costs.

· If the baby needs to be taken away for any reason then I would like my husband to be allowed to go with the baby.

becklebigbump · 16/11/2007 13:32

Wow Skid, you are very organised! I think my birth plan last time just said "as little pain releif as possible". They took me at my word. I won't be putting that on this time!
TBH I am not that fussed about students and such being present, I don't think I really noticed who was in the room at the time with either birth as I was so focussed on getting the baby out! My DS2 wants to be there when baby is born though so we are trying to tell him how much more fun he will have with his Uncle! He is very excited about being a big brother!

mixedmama · 16/11/2007 13:34

No students is a good call then Amani

Amani · 16/11/2007 13:36

Skid - Data Analyst. Am I right in saying you are a researcher/PHD student?

It's actually very interesting where we work, for example we have a conference on today regarding Diversity and covering a range of topics such as: diversity issues in HE, impacts of veiling etc.

Oh and lots of policemen have come to the conference aswell........in uniform!!

claraquitebignow · 16/11/2007 13:36

Skid - my parents will be looking after dd when I am in labour/giving birth but they live over an hour away and also have a few things on over the next few weeks so it's probably the one thing I am most worried about! Have written them a very detailed list of what to do/where everything is etc (spent far more time on this than a birth plan!); if by any chance they can't get here in time I have a good friend across the road I will leave her with. But I really don't want her to be distressed with being left with people she is not used to at a time which will be distressing enough.

Saw the doctor yesterday and baby is two-fifths engaged. Not sure if this means much - but am happy things are at least heading in the right general direction!

mixedmama · 16/11/2007 13:44

Ohhhh men in uniforms... I have an unhealthy obsession with the Mountie uniform and used to watch that Due South programme religiously.... loved that guy.

Amani · 16/11/2007 13:53

lol @ Due South guy - not my cup of tea....

Amani · 16/11/2007 13:53

More like Daniel Craig - but without the face would do me....

mixedmama · 16/11/2007 13:56

Not Daniel Craig...in 007 I saw the attraction but otherwise oh no!!!

I lurrrrvvveee Benjamin Bratt and Ricky Martin mmmmmmm

skidaddle · 16/11/2007 13:56

amani - do you work in an academic dept or in an admin dept? Yes I am a PhD student and do some teaching too

The thought of a load of policemen in uniform certainly doesn't do it for me..

MM - your birth plan is great - might copy a few bits if that's OK

beckle - would you consider having your DS2 at the birth? I know some people do it and rave about it. Think my DD is too young (just turned 2) but your DS is 5 isn't he?

My birth plan was really vague minimalist last time too and that's why I want to include a lot this time - so that i feel more in control

BTW I only just wrote my birthplan this morning and I cribbed it off the internet so don't be too impressed with my organisational skills!

skidaddle · 16/11/2007 13:59

at your taste in men MM and amani
Mind you my tastes are somewhat unconventional to put it kindly, think Jeremy Paxman, Will Self, and even Michael Portillo - I know it's wrong but I can't help myself

mixedmama · 16/11/2007 13:59

Think I am goign to phrase mine more like yours Skid.

mellymooks · 16/11/2007 14:02

Hi Claraquitebignow, I looked at my notes and it says I'm 3/5's I don't really know what this means either!
Does anyone out there know anymore?

mixedmama · 16/11/2007 14:03

Nearly fell off my chair at Michael Portillio.... have seen that more than once tho.

I like the Latino look myself, dark and brooding.

www.bazthegreatsite.com/Abra.gif Love this guy Vincent Laresca... he was a baddie in CSI Miami recently and Horatio shot him cos he killed his wife... there is a scene in Romeo and Juliet where he bares his steel teeth,.... I love it ... had it as my screen saver thing for ages.

skidaddle · 16/11/2007 14:04

melly - it means the mw can feel 2/5 (3/5 below) of your baby's head above your pelvic bone which is good news because it means s/he is moving down ready for birth

claraq - that is great your baby is 2/5 2nd time round - could be any day now! How is your DD geting on?

skidaddle · 16/11/2007 14:06

well Michael Portillo is quite dark and brooding too MM in a middle-aged Tory kinda way...

mellymooks · 16/11/2007 14:06

Wow Skid your birth plan is really impressive! may have to steal a few of your ideas!

Just been out shopping in town and so tired now! Really finding that I have to slow down now, but really don't want to become too immobile either!

skidaddle · 16/11/2007 14:08

melly - sorry my last post wasn;t clear - should read:

it means the mw can feel 2/5 of your baby's head above your pelvic bone (3/5 is below the pelvic bone)which is good news because it means s/he is moving down ready for birth

Amani · 16/11/2007 14:08

MM - errrmm Bratt and Martin???..... whatever tickles your fancy, I suppose..

Skid - Part of the support staff team (not called admin here - some people had issues with that word!).

skidaddle · 16/11/2007 14:09

see that MM - amani had no issues with MY list of attractive males

Amani · 16/11/2007 14:09

Skid - I had to laught out loud of your choice!
