@diamante11 Never heard of that, I was just asked to go with a comfortably full bladder 🤷🏻‍♀️ Although I don’t know if it’s a routine thing they do in Italy. I would imagine you could refuse if you don’t want it

diamante11 · 06/02/2021 08:04

@MrsB2019x thanks for the reply, yeah I've never heard of it either, I'm definitely going to refuse though, I'm not risking anything that I'm unsure about, just wanted to make sure that it wasn't normal and then I look like a fool 😂

PurplePansy05 · 06/02/2021 08:07

@diamante11 First of all, at 12 wks an external scan should be sufficient unless they have sny specific concerns about your cervix for example. But your cervix should not be "relaxed"?! It needs to stay tightly shut in pregnancy. I googled this drug and isn't it used for hyperactive bladder or in cases involving UTI? I can't think of a reason why you should be taking it before a scan as routine and you can't be forced to anyway. Very odd.

diamante11 · 06/02/2021 08:19

Thank you @PurplePansy05 it's so hard being in another culture where they do things differently. I also googled it and it seemed quite inappropriate for me to be taking it too. Hopefully they accept when I refuse otherwise I just won't have the scan tbh, it's taken me 18 years to get this far in a pregnancy and I'm not doing anything to risk it ❤️

DeusEx · 06/02/2021 08:25

@Whatshouldbemyusername sorry, what’s an EDD?

PurplePansy05 · 06/02/2021 09:01

@diamante11 Have a chat with them and also maybe have a look if there are MN equivalent parenting fora in Italy, there are bound to be discussions around this which could give you some idea. I assume you speak Italian? FWIW, I had numerous vaginal scans in previous pregnancies and no meds were required before. I wouldn't not have the scan, just refuse the meds if you're uncomfortable with it (I'm with you on that) xx

Whatshouldbemyusername · 06/02/2021 09:08

@DeusEx Estimated Due Date x

@diamante11 I agree with the other girls. Definitely haven’t heard of it and I’m sure if you refuse it you should be ok. In the U.K. we are just being asked to go in with a full bladder. I have mine in 10 days and I will be 13 weeks and a day too. I think.

Also my nightly runs to the bathroom have more or less gone to waking up once/twice some nights. I’m so grateful for that! Is anyone else experiencing less waking up at night for now?x

diamante11 · 06/02/2021 09:28

@PurplePansy05 yes i speak Italian but for people here it's the norm, without wanting to sound snobbish they don't really like foreigners here to begin with so I already feel at a disadvantage tbh. It don't live in mainland Italy so people are different here and very stuck in their ways. I don't have a midwife or any numbers I can call for questions or anything. I'm having the harmony test on Tuesday and have to go to someone's house in another town to have it done 😂😂 no clinic or surgery, someone's house LOL !!! You've all been so helpful and I'm not going to have the medicine, everyone has basically confirmed that it's not the norm and so my mind is made up ❤️

diamante11 · 06/02/2021 09:29

@Whatshouldbemyusername thanks for the advice. Mine is (hopefully) on the 19th of Feb what date is yours?

PurplePansy05 · 06/02/2021 10:17

@diamante11 I have family in a number of European countries and am of mixed heritage myself. I think sometimes there's a cultural difference in communication whereby Brits consider Europeans blunt or even rude, or think they don't like them. I can reassure you most of the time this isn't the case, the European way, particularly central and southern, is just usually more forward so just speak your mind and take no notice of the perceived attitude, this most likely isn't what you think it is. I have no experience of living in the islands but I can imagine the facilities are a bit different 😂 I am sure all will be fine, try not to worry in advance 💝 xx

diamante11 · 06/02/2021 10:23

@PurplePansy05 thank you, you've worded that brilliantly ❤️ really appreciate it and will try and stay calm until the 19th hahaha ❤️

Whatshouldbemyusername · 06/02/2021 10:45

@diamante11 all will go well. Sounds different there but different isn’t necessarily a bad thing. X

Mine is 16th feb. So far it does feel unreal so I’m looking forward to the 16th as my partner can also come to the scan.

HopefulB · 06/02/2021 12:08

Hi to @DeusEx @diamante11 @EJT89 and @Carefree1 , sorry if i’ve missed anyone else!

@diamante11, it’s definitely not used in the nhs (and not licensed in the uk for this indication). It contain a drug called Trospium, which as others have said is used for bladder spasms/over activity. As with all medicines in pregnancy it should be a risk vs benefit decision. I’d suggest you ask your healthcare provider why they would like you to take it and decide if that is important to you, or if you’re ok to put up with a bit of bladder pain to get a good scan pic.

Feeling like I have a bit more energy today, ploughed through “bump it up” yesterday and inspired to go out for a little run/walk and see how it feels (hopefully no different yet, but have not really done much the last 4-5weeks!!)

northernsquirrel · 06/02/2021 12:12

I'm in a similar situation @WolfMother326. I'm moving in with DP but want to keep my existing midwife and give birth in my local hospital as I work in the trust and it has a good reputation. It'll be about a 45min journey when I go into labour but you have to do what you're happiest with x

northernsquirrel · 06/02/2021 12:17

Welcome @Carefree1 and @DeusEx

DeusEx · 06/02/2021 12:56

Thank you for the welcomes, @northernsquirrel and @HopefulB !

@Whatshouldbemyusername ahh, thank you. Yes, 28 august - but obviously potentially will move given it’s so early still. Scan in a week and a half... I’m not in the U.K. and scans don’t quite match up with timing....

Is anyone else still feeling really nauseous? Mine has got worse over the last week yet the advice on the baby app I’m using is that it should be improving! Envy

Do you mean a private gynaecologist? Or a laboratori di analisi? They tend to have their surgeries/clinics/labs in apartment buildings. You're not going to be having a medical test done in someone's front room.
Did you ask your gynae/ambulatorio doctor why the bladder meds? As you'll know, pregnancy is highly medicalised in Italy, for better or worse, so it's probably something they like to give you to make sure your bladder behaves during a uterus scan.
Like most others, I was just told to always have a full bladder.

Whatshouldbemyusername · 06/02/2021 15:17

@DeusEx mines 23rd august as per my app but the on the day of the scan will know more about the exact date.

I was feeling sick between weeks 6-10. Then it went away and then this week I’ve felt sick 3 days again. They do say after first trimester it will get better. That’s what my app says too!x

BertieBotts · 06/02/2021 15:22

Interestingly I've never been asked for a full bladder in Germany. In fact at every appointment they give me a cup and ask for a urine sample so my bladder is always empty. I asked my doctor the other day and he said oh, maybe it's for internal scans? I said no, because you don't normally have an internal scan in the UK but he was already doing something else.

@StepOutOfLine yes I am actually going to someone's house to have my blood taken for the harmony test, I phoned the doctor in charge to ask if he would be present and why it was not being done in a clinic and he said because of "politics". Obviouslymy normal bloodwork is done in a hospital (which I had done last week) but for this private test they asked me to go to someone's house in the middle of a residential area.

MrsB2019x · 06/02/2021 15:50

@DeusEx Mine got worse too until it came to a head on Monday where I was throwing up all day for the first time (I was 12+3!) luckily the last few days have been better and I’m hoping that was just a final surge or something

PurplePansy05 · 06/02/2021 15:56

So I went to my private clinic for a check over and all is good, cervix closed, good amount of amniotic fluid. Phew 😊 My son is now 72mm long, I can't believe he grew by another 9mm since Tuesday 😱 Had an unexpected bonus scan, including in 4D, and the doctor has been fantastic 😊. Having said that, my urine results came back after my 12 week scan saying they'll need to retest me, there's more bacteria than normal apparently. Might be contamination but might be a UTI (which I have had lots pre-pregnancy) so we'll see. Hope everyone is having a nice, relaxing weekend xx

PurplePansy05 · 06/02/2021 15:57

I'm also feeling more energetic and better with food, let's hope things stay this way, that would be lovely 🤞 xx

You need to ring Striscia la Notizia then.
Though as I said, you may be going to a residential building in which trained medical personnel have their private studio. But please don't make Italy sound like there are random members of the public carrying out invasive medical tests in their living rooms because you know it isn't true.

PurplePansy05 · 06/02/2021 16:12

@StepOutOfLine I see your point completely, but please be aware Harmony is a non-invasive test, just to clarify this. @diamante11 really hasn't therefore suggested this sort of thing at all. Btw, are you expecting in August too? Sorry if I've missed your intro post and congratulations if so 😊 xx
