Am avoiding Gina Ford as my friend says she hates nothing more in the world than this book. I suppose it must be popular for a reason though.

mixedmama · 03/10/2007 13:42

i dont thinkt here is any harm in reading it but again as with most things concerning child rearing take it with a pinch of salt... it might be good for giving some inspiration or ideas you may not have thought of trying... i think the key is not to take anything written by / advised by anyone else as gospel.

Amani · 03/10/2007 13:44

MM- well I sometimes think about the msg that 'In the Night Garden' gives out - 2 of them snogging each other all the time, Macka Packa (sooo cute!) but has OCD, and the threesome, whose trousers are always coming off!!

Juicy - whatever birth works for you. I personally would want all the drugs that I can have on stand by. Heard a lot of negative things about Gina Ford but have not read her book.

I dont understand the programme, its purpose or the story line really... how are all the characters connected... i just dont get it.

Angechica · 03/10/2007 13:50

Hi dids I have a big one for 1st baby too but scan and miwife say all is normal size re baby so far

Still fingers crossed I haven't got GD and growing a whopper. I got quite upset when I went to Tesco last night and tried to find foods without sugar in for this week.

Cheering myself up by bidding for a Quinny pushchair on Ebay - looks like I can get it for less than half the price of new. Also it has the dreami carrycot and although i've already been given a moses basket this looks really good - like the idea you can leave them in there when you come in from walks if they are asleep, which i wouldn't want to do if they were in a car seat.

LilyLoo · 03/10/2007 14:00

I have the Gina Ford book and i did find some parts of it good. However i think it's like anything you have to find the bits that work for you and not become obsessed with following someone elses routine.
Like the continuum and spock method. A bit of everything i suppose!
As for feeding in the supermarket they probably have one of the better places to feed. Most of them have designated areas.
The worst things i found were pubs.

Awen - sorry to hear lunch wasn't so fun.

Juicy - I'm going to have a go at a natural homebirth. We've hired an Independent Midwife so we know who'll be here on the day... hoping that it will all go ok, but mentally prepared to bust a move to hospital if things go pear shaped or if my pain tolerance is not quite up to it.

This is my first too, so hopefully I'm not being completely bonkers!

madmouse · 03/10/2007 14:39

Hi Juicy

I am planning a home birth too. For me (I am sure not for everyone) that feels like the right thing to do. Must be my Dutch genes. Have you had a look at www.homebirth.org.uk? Lots of info and stories of home births, including those that ended up transferring to hospital. Plan a home birth, as said already, you can always transfer.

Quick question about nappies...

...Morrisons are selling all nappies with 1/3 off, and I'm very tempted to make the most of it and buy in bulk what essentially I'm going to have to buy anyway.

Any idea on how many would be good to go for? How long to newborn nappies last?

Amani · 03/10/2007 15:27

I bought one small packet of newborn size 1 (about 37 nappies) and will buy the rest size 2.

Juicy hi. I had a home birth with my last ds and he was toooq uick for me to have any pain relief and I found it quite hard going tbh.
Though I only had gas and air with ds2 and a water birth with ds3 I dont think totaly free range birth is viable. But on the other hand with ds1 I had the lot apart from an epidoodle and feel like I totaly 'missed' the whole thing. I was terribly sick with the pethidine and had to have a drip in the end because I was sooooo tired my body totaly slowed down. So think carefuly what you ask for.
Oh Awen your poor boy. Would he fancy some soup? Warm with a bit of soggy bread in it? My ds is asleep at the moment in his bed. Had to fight him to go there mind but he was falling alseep eating his lunch. He had a little walk earlier with DH to corner shop to get some milk. I think thats what wore him out
All I keep getting is how big I am! Even when the nurse on Saturday asked when I was due I said January she commented'oh a big baby then!'.Maybe its because its number 5 and my tummy muscles just dont exist any more

Neuro · 03/10/2007 15:48

Today is SO BORING.

I bought a new handbag at lunchtime. And put some inappropriate shoes aside to pick up tomorrow. I'll be about 6ft in them.

blah blah.

Sorry. I'm bored and i'm boring.

Think i went over my happy limit yesterday after MW appointment and now experiecing a withdrawl.

gingeme · 03/10/2007 15:51

Neuro what are the shoes like?

Neuro · 03/10/2007 15:56

they are like court shoes, but wedges, with ankle strap, and enormous wooden wedge, black patent leather. I have a nice black mini dress that i intend to wear with some coloured tights post babba and my big black coat. It'll be my glamorous visiting people with new baby outfit.

Well, that's the intention. I shan't be able to walk far in them.

I think i just really want some inappropriate clothing/footwear to look forward to wearing if you know what I mean

mixedmama · 03/10/2007 15:57

I wanna go home, been sick about 4times this afternoon .... thoroughly had enough.

Cazzybaby · 03/10/2007 16:11

Naetha - I noticed the deal on the nappies but I'm also not sure on the sizes! The way i'm going LO is going to be miniscule when she comes out.

How accurate is all this fundal hight measuring does anyone know?? Cos in my 20 week scan my LO was fine, but since they have been measuring fundal hight they say she is small??

Naetha · 03/10/2007 16:11

Oh well, I've bought 4 of those newborn packs, so have er...148 of them - eek! Maybe I should take a couple of the packs back - I still have the receipt
