Most places let you take unopened packets of nappies back and exchange for the next size up (paying the extra if there is any, obv).

Mine were in newborn nappies for about 3 months... I make 'em small!

Mind you its handy to have loads when they are tiny. You take one nappy off and they poo everywhere and get the outside of the new nappy that you were about to put on. And then you put a 3rd nappy on them and then they throw up and get the outside of that one, and you change them again and then they poo - do you get the picture?

I'll have one of the non-pooing varieties please

Neuro - I just been looking on the topshop website and have depressed myself by looking at all the nice clothes that I cannot buy as I will not get into them

tell me about it!

They do have some really nice maternity frocks though. I'm tempted to buy one and wear it to the upcoming christmas parties.

Hey girls - found you!
Have had miserable cold for the last day - we had gone to see Macbeth at the theatre last night (getting in this kind of thing while we still can) and my nose was streaming and I was honking away. Felt so hard done by and then slept that blocked-nose kind of sleep.
Am off to a wedding with the reception in St James' Palace tomorrow afternoon! V excited to see the state rooms. Am hoping a summery dress with jacket will not look ridiculous - it's the only smart smart thing I have that will fit.
Beller - was v jealous of you seeing Gervais live- have seen a couple of his DVDs of stand up and have HURt laughing!
Hugs all round - specially to Awen and /gingeme and their stoical sons!

MM - hope you are ok???

I bought the blue party dress and silver top and black trousers from top shop and had to send the whole lot back - it all looked horrible.

Is it me or does there seem a whole lot of stuff to get for such a little person.

Not checked the prices on everything but tesco.com direct now sell all the baby stuff pushcahirs carrycots etc might be worth a look.

Hi everyone. I am still here although I haven't posted a message for ages. As usual I'm finding it impossible to keep up with all the messages.

Some of you have been talking about nappies. Has anyone thought about reuseable nappies? We are thinking about it and have done some research. It would be nice to know if anyone has any experience of using them. Any opinions?

Report
susiemj · 03/10/2007 18:51

I'm thinking about it. Have heard from lots of friends that it's not too much hassle. Motherease nappies seem to be a favourite. Have bought disposables for the first few days. Not decided yet. I've only got a small house and I'm not sure I want drying nappies all over it.

If anyone's interested I can post recommendations by very enthusiastic daddy friend of mine??

LouiseSJ · 03/10/2007 18:56

I haven't heard of Motherease nappies. Is there a website?

From what we have looked into so far I think the one life nappies seem good because they do a kit that contains everything you need from birth to potty training. In the kit you get 20 nappies that are supposed to fit a newborn right the way through. Most of the other types come in two sizes so you'd have to buy some of size 1 and some of size 2.

But yes, I agree, it won't be good having nappies drying all over the house. Especially as we are we having winter babies so we can't hang them outside to dry.

I'm thinking about re-usable nappies and a nappy service (where they come and pick up the stinky nappies and bring you clean ones back).

has anyone used one of those? do they end up being ridiculously expensive? from the little research I've done they don't seem too madly priced, and you can get a rebate from the your council, depending on where you live.

(Am thinking that it's becoming more and more clear that this is my first! Home birth and re-usable nappies... does it get any more idealistic! )

LouiseSJ · 03/10/2007 19:01

I think you're looking at about £9 per week for the nappy service.

Hello everyone, I just typed out a long post and then lost it all... can't be bothered to type it out again sorry!

For the birth, I am trying to decide whether to have an elective caesarian or try a VBAC. I really don't know what to do. Certainly won't be a home birth if I have anything to do with it.

I made my first baby-related purchases today, as there is a sale on in Gap and I got some little sleepsuits with feet in them.

As for the breastfeeding in public bit, I fed all over the place last time round. I didn't flash my boobs all over the place, obviously, but I didn't let where I was dictate whether I could feed or not. I always tried to be discrete. I certainly hope to be doing the same again this time.

Can't find a linkk to the nappy bag I liked, but will look for it.

There's a nice looking sling in blooming marvellous here: sling

Wouldn't mind the male mode with it too!

Sabinar - meant to say thanks for that link to the apartments in Barcelona. Have filed it away for later, as I am looking to be pampered in luxury surroundings this time

Hi barristermum sorry to hear about your cold.
Just had a massive row with dh. ds3 wasnt eating his dinner because his thraot hurt. I was giving him alternative choices like yoghurt or ice cream and he was getting a bit cross and tearful so dh said 'get down if your not going to eat your bloody dinner and lifted him off his chair and plonked him on the floor resulting in floods of tears form ds3. I got up to comfort him and shouted at dh'just think back to when you had your tonsils out and how much it hurt!. F*ING IDIOT!,.. Settled ds3 with a youghurt and some Calpol.
Havnt spoken to dh yet
Not like me to loose my cool like that but for Gods sake hes only 3
Anyway now Ive had my rant Im off for a bath.
See you tommorrow ladies

Sorry about argument Gingeme. Hope all is ok now.

Thought I'd post my friend's advice to me as some were interested. I've had a couple of recommendations for Motherease. They're a one size nappy too, Louise.

Here goes.

"I got the nappies from www.earthlets.co.uk. The website?s a bit confusing, but you will need:

*20 Mother-ease one-size nappies. Get the ?Dry? variant with polyester lining. Don?t get fewer than 20; at about 7 nappies a day for a newborn you don?t want to be washing more than once every 2/3 days
8 small (not extra-small)

*Rikki air-flow wraps (these are the water-proof pants that go over the nappies). You don?t need extra small unless your baby is premature ? and even then you?ll probably want to go for disposables until s/he?s big enough for smalls. In time you?ll need different medium then large for these but not for the time being.

*Rolls of Ultra-biodegradable Nappy liners (these are paper towels that go inside the nappy and catch the shite, so not too much of it goes on the nappies themselves. They can go on the compost heap, if you have one; shite very good for compost)

*One big bucket/bin with a tight-fitting lid to put the shitty nappies. Get this from a pound shop as you?ll pay a premium for a specialist nappy bin.

*Tea Tree oil. Two drops in the bin really does neutralise the odour of shite and the little bottle will last a year. Don?t use nappy bin sanitiser, which smells worse than the shite.
*A big pot of Sudocrem healing crime, to smother all over your baby?s bottom like fat over a roasting chicken.

*Loads of cotton wool from the chemist?s.
In time, but not now, you?ll need snap-in liners from the Mother-ease range, which absorb a bit more of the little cherub?s wee."

End of advice. Apparently they don't take too long to dry inside. Not 100% convinced I won't be living in nappy city.

hey susie - thanks for posting that! very interesting!

if only they came in bright colours. I think that's half the reason I want to use re-usable nappies is because I've seen some of the most gorgeous brightly coloured nappies running around. V cute.

I guess I could get all crafty and dye them myself? (asking for trouble?)

LouiseSJ · 03/10/2007 21:56

Susie thank you so much for that. I'll definitely have a look at the website.

I would have been extremely pissed off too gingeme. I think the pain kicks in for them a few days after the op too. You are absolutely right to give him soft stuff. tbh I think drinking is most important.

Ds had very poorly tummy today, think down to lack of food, lots of milk and also antibiotics. He had some dinner tonight, am very proud as he told me after he was especially brave as he was holding back his tears and it really hurt. Feel guilty as hell, but also think that he will feel lots better tomorrow for having eaten. He had 2 new potatoes and spaghetti hoops and another whole mug of sugared milk. He is tucked up in his bed now (I get mine to myself for first night in ages!). Hoping he gets a good nights sleep. Was complaining of sore ears at bedtime and i made sure he had all his medicine.

Pudding is bouncing around alot today, is lovely feeling. I definately think pudding will recognise his brothers voice. We listened in this morning using the monitor thing. Pudding kicked it lots

I cant believe thursday tomorrow. Dp is back on Saturday, these 2 weeks have flown by.

Yes all is happy again. Dh gave ds3 lots of hugs before bedtime and said sorry for shouting at him. I should bloody well think so. Glad your ds is improving too Awen
Oh forgot to say ds3 was laying on the sofa earlier with his head on my bump and bean kicked him in the side of the head. ds asked what it was and bean did it again. I said its the baby wishing his big brother better. This got a big smile from him
Off to bed now. Hope you all have a peaceful night.xx
