Lipstick our messages crossed - sorry you're feeling so bad this morning, feel awful for saying how well I was feeling

Tessiebear · 02/11/2004 09:32

Morning all!!! Started to feel quite nauseaous last night - woke up this morning feeling sick but as soon as i got up and got some toast down me i felt fine Hope you are all ok. Agree with Lipstick - if you can afford it, it is nice to SEE your baby before 20 weeks - just to know everything is in the right place IYSWIM!

LipstickMum · 02/11/2004 09:36

Hehe don't worry Tessie I wont hold it against you am feeling better at the moment.

sweetheart · 02/11/2004 09:42

Morning everyone,

This may be a really thick question to ask but here goes......

Why is everyone so concerned about the neucal fold test? Is it because your either

  1. older mothers 0r
  2. just don't get a 12 week scan in your area.

Is this something I should be worrying about??? I'll be at low risk for down syndrome as I'm only 23.

A friend of mine went to a private clinic up near Harley Street (I think?!?!?!) and had a 3D scan done of her baby when she was pregnant - it was quite amazing - you can see what your baby looks like before it's born. We are thinking of having this done - I think it's about £270. They also do normal scans for about £100 (again, I think?!?!?!)

Dh was a total bastard again last night BTW!!! We are supposed to be seeing the bank tonight about getting another mortgage - we want to buy a flat as a sort of pension provision. I'm going to cancel as I can't even bear to be in a room with him ATM!!!!!

Tessiebear · 02/11/2004 09:49

Glad you are feeling better lipstick - there is only one way for me and that is..... worse (feel lucky so far with m/s)
Sweetheart - sorry you are having such a crap time with your DH. btw - how did the drinking/smoking thing go with your collegues yesterday???

sweetheart · 02/11/2004 09:54

Got away with the not drinking - used my weight watchers weigh in as my excuse for that - but
smoked 1/2 a cigarette.

I put it out after about 4 puffs and said it didn't taste as good without alcohol. Didn't like the taste at all - infact I had to clean my teeth when I got home.

Please don't shout at me

Oh BTW - didn't loose my 2Ibs - managed to get 1 off - will have to get that last bloody Ib off this week!!!!

Tessiebear · 02/11/2004 10:05

Dont beat yourself up too much about that last pound Sweetheart - you are carrying a wee baby in there (thats got to be a bit of xtra weight)

sweetheart · 02/11/2004 10:12

That last pound is like my arch nemesis!!!!! I will get it off if it's the last thing I do!!!!

welshmum · 02/11/2004 10:13

Sweetheart, nuchal fold scans are part of the process at my hospital but anyway I'd like to have a look at him/her - especially after having an m/c at 12 weeks last time. I don't know whether being older is part of it as I don't know what I'd do if I had high odds of having a downs baby. DH and I just decided to go for what's on offer and take any decision as they come up. With dd we had a soft marker for downs but carried on regardless.
Glad you got through last night and hope things get better with dh soon.

sweetheart · 02/11/2004 10:18

sorry - I just assumed that neucal fold testing was linked with early downs syndrome diagnosis

Uwila · 02/11/2004 10:25

Sweetheart, it is. There are several characteristics, like the nasal bone, and the amount of fluid in the nuchal fold (back of neck) that can indicate a liklihood of the baby having DS. HEnce, if the % comes back high, then people may choose to proceed with a diagnostic test like amnio or cvs to know for sure.

welshmum · 02/11/2004 10:27

I hope that I didn't give the impression that a nuchal fold scan wasn't specifically for downs. As Ulwila says it is but it's great to see them too!

sweetheart · 02/11/2004 10:36

Sorry, I'm being really thick aren't I - You wouldn't think this is 2nd time round for me would you. It's just been so long since I did all this preg stuff and my head is a bit like scrambled egg ATM!!!!!!

I'm sure I'll be back in the swing of things once I've had my first Dr/Midwife appointment.

teabelly · 02/11/2004 10:40

Sweetheart nuchal fold testing is a scan that detects certain risk factors (sooner and better, some believe, than your 20 week abnormaly scan). They check predominantly for Downs but also other abnormalaties too. They only assess your risk so you/your baby may be high risk but perfectly normal, it is only an amnio or csv test that will categorically say yes or no.

Some hospitals offer a nuchal test within the 12-15 week scan that they provide now, but for most you still have to go privately.

My sister was 18 when she had her dd with down's, so I had the nuchal test when I was pg with ds because of the family link. I came back as very low risk 1 in 5000, so I personally feel that from a genetic standpoint we have very little risk. But as ds for example is a caused by a chromosone attaching itself to the wrong place at conception although certain factors like older eggs and genetic predispoition play a role it could happen to any baby at any time.

Sorry that sounds really gloomy...

Ultimately you have to decide would it make a diference if the baby was/wasn't 'normal' and then decide whether to have additional scans or not.

The 3D scan sounds fab btw .

sweetheart · 02/11/2004 10:46

thanks everyone!!! I'll be asking my midwife about a neucal fold test

Cobweb · 02/11/2004 11:20

Morning girls gosh sorry to spark off the nuchal fold debate hugs

I felt so sick last night and couldn't eat my roast dinner apart from the potatoes and chicken!

This morning I actually had my head down the toilet for 5 minutes although nothing came up. I find that once I have eaten I feel a lot better but the thought of it puts me off.

I have got into "Nice" biscuits and am loving them dunked in a cuppa

The other things is I am so tired and come 9pm I am wiped out. Trouble is I wake so early which sets of the m/s at 6am!

Good to hear everyone is ok apart from m/s hugs

LipstickMum · 02/11/2004 11:51

I love waking up after a good nights sleep (which i am still getting at the mo., no loo dashes in the night yet), but then immediatley I wake up I remember 'the sickness'

Can't wait to stop talking about sickness and start talking about cutey bumps and kicking and stuff

sweetheart · 02/11/2004 11:51

I haven't got the sickness..............yet

welshmum · 02/11/2004 11:53

I know what you mean Lipstick, at the moment it all seems a bit unreal - bumps will make it real, fat just makes it annoying!
I'm having my sleep disturbed by needing the loo - and then I can't get back to sleep, then dd wakes up at 0500 because of the clocks going back....grrr. It'll all settle down again soon I guess

LipstickMum · 02/11/2004 11:56

WHat are people finding they can eat at the moment? For me, it varies daily, I just have to think about what I THINK I can cope with and have that. Last night it was plain spaghetti with oil and salt and pepper, but after a while even that made me gag.

Am thinking of having some chicken noodle soup for lunch. Toast and marmite seems to always go down as does earl grey tea. And cheddar.

Anyone got any other favourites?

welshmum · 02/11/2004 11:58

Bacon sandwiches seem to be ok and fish at lunchtime - but not at night. Apples and hazlenuts. I feel like my stomach has been taken over by strange mystic forces

sweetheart · 02/11/2004 12:00

We had a chinese last night - I was mostly OK eating it - but heaved over the plates whilst loading the dishwasher.

I guess my aversion to greesy food is back - I couldn't stand the smell of fatty food with my last preg.

No fav's as yet though.

sweetheart · 02/11/2004 12:00

Ohhhhh, Welshmum - I REALLY fancy a fish finger sandwich now!!!!!!!!!!!

LipstickMum · 02/11/2004 12:01

mmmmm yes bacon butties I can cope with

LipstickMum · 02/11/2004 12:01

ok, now we're talking about food I DON'T have in the house, so I'd better stop!!!!
