Awen maybe your baby will have mahogany hair and skin in between you and your parnter's colour. Apparently all people carry a set of two types of skin colour gene, this can be 2 light genes, 2 dark genes, or 1 of each. And it works in similar way to eye colour, so you could have two parents with a set of dark genes each but they could still have a lighter skinned child due to a granny ancestor having a light gene knocking around.

An old friend of mine has red curly hair, dark golden skin and clear green eyes. Her mum and dad are typically white looking, mum blonde blue eyes, dad red hair and blue eyes, but 8 generations back a woman in their family had a scandalous affair (at the time) with an African guy and my friend's skin (which is beautiful) and curly hair is a throwback to him. My friend's looks are the envy of all of us, as she looks v unusual. Actually she looks a bit like the curly haired model from the M and S tv ads.

It's not just books that assume you are in a couple, wehn i was booking all the antenatal class thingys the woman kept saying bring your partner to that one, i'd say i am single, and then she started talking about the class to do with labour AGAIN she said ooooh def bring your parntner to that one.

I gave up after that!

suey2 · 24/09/2007 16:50

oops. DH has green eyes but both his parents have blue! I did bring this up with him before (did a bit of genetics at uni) but the eye website insists it is impossible.

I have weird eyes- a blue/grey circle outside a green circle outside a brown circle: I do have a chance of green, blue or brown though which is quite fun- independent if which variable i put in.

Insy- try drinking a load of water- I have been getting a few dehydration headaches. It seem to help a little with the breathlessness, although I am also finding it very tiresome.

Really feeling unwell now and have massively cut my patient list. Anything when i am sitting leaning forward makes me even more breathless. 30 weeks PG this week. And my most senior member of staff has told me she will be leaving in February. Rats.

DH is black African, I am (very)white English. dd was born very very pale, with lots of straight dark hair and dark blue eyes. Her eyes then turned a really cool dark purple colour and then through various stages before finally settling on dark brown. Her skin has gradually got darker (although she is still pretty pale)and her hair has got lighter and now has reddish tones in it. Her hair is also now getting more afro by the day. FIL is a dr and he was amazed when we told him she was born with blue eyes cos he thought it only applied to white babies, not mixed.

Neuro · 24/09/2007 18:05

Your daughter sounds gorgeous!

g'night all

Louise76 · 24/09/2007 19:39

Thanks for putting up that link to the eye colour predictor, Neuro. Sadly my baby can only really have blue eyes as I realised when I was completing it that almost everyone concerned (My parents, hubby's parents, hubby and me) all have blue eyes!! Only my sister is different as she has red hair and green eyes. My Granny had lovely olive skin, dark hair and brown eyes so I was kind of hoping that her colouring would come through as a genetic throwback! This site is so reassuring as I have had a few panics over the last few weeks about how little I know about babies (I've never changed a nappy either, suey) and my fear of giving birth. At least I know it's not just me. Also I am ashamed to admit that it is me who is snoring - so loud I wake myself up sometimes! I hasten to add that this didn't happen before I was pregnant!

Nbg · 24/09/2007 19:52

fifi, glad you said that about the stairs.
They virtually finish me off!!

Skidaddle, will try the bum out and leaning thing
Am liking the laying in bed with donoughts idea. Although I might substitute them for ice cubes and a sponge, lol.

Re the baby weight thing, I think its something like after the 32nd weeks or there abouts, all baby does is put on weight. Around half a pound a week.

insywinsyspider · 24/09/2007 19:56

thanks suey - I think it was dehydration, I left work, necked a pint of water with some rehydration stuff in and went to bed for a nap before picking up ds, that seemed to sort it, my job is 100% computer time and that wasn't helping

was only jumping on computer to sort out banking (desperately needs doing) and got side tracked - i spend too much time plugged into the net

insywinsyspider · 24/09/2007 19:58

ps baby weight thing, MW said scans can be 1lb out either way so I thing measurements could be even more inaccurate - this whole pg thing is guess work, even different countries can't agree on length of gestation, 39 wks in china, 40 here, 41 in france....

Bouncingturtle · 24/09/2007 21:10

I think the weight thing is not that accurate - they were certainly out when they measured my friend - they said the baby was around 8lb8oz when she was 37 weeks, but when he was born at 39 weeks he was only 8lb2oz.
BTW Clairybee - took a peek at your pics, your dd is a real cutie pie! You must be very proud

suey2 · 25/09/2007 08:49

my pal, less than 5ft tall, was told that her baby would be 6.5-7lbs. he was 8lb 12oz. I don't think we can take anything from prospective weights TBH. Mine is apparently 'normal' but I am more inclined to think i will have a thumper- my siblings and i were all pretty big.

Morning everyone.

Wow - Suey cant believe 30 weeks already, I am 4 weeks behind at 26, but it is all going so fast cant believe LO will be here so soon.

Loucee · 25/09/2007 09:33

Morning everyone

Good link about eye colour, I think all my kids will have blue as both sides of family have blue eyes.

Oh my goodness, major wimp alert but I managed to get a huge blister on my heel from new shoes at the weekend, last night it started throbbing and a massive blister was forming. It was so painful I had to do breathing techniques to control the pain but then remembered how annoying it is to do those when you're in real pain! It was a reminder to me how low my pain threshold is and I felt like a right wally rolling round in agony from a blister! (TMI but after I took a sterile needle and popped it the pain subsided). Remind me of this when I'm going on about how I'm going to try labour without an epidural.....

Wow, some of you are 30+ wks! That's excellent and makes it feel a lot closer. I'm 28+ wks so not far behind.

Off to the Doctors at 11, due back at work tomorrow after being signed off sick for 2 wks - really nervous about returning.

Suey - not long until your maternity leave starts!

thelady · 25/09/2007 09:36

Morning to you all!

If you want a chuckle, have a look at DH's blog posting last night here. Thank goodness the kitchen's closed tonight as we've been steadily busy since Friday and my feet are sore.

Off to try and get a car seat today - 30 weeks and getting twitchy about the 9 half-days off that I have before I'm due (and two of those will hopefully be on holiday)!

mixedmama · 25/09/2007 09:41

Ahhhh so rubbish work wont let me access it as it is a blog. the gits.

MotherofZ · 25/09/2007 09:52

lol - want a cottage pie with POTATO now.

mixedmama · 25/09/2007 09:55

mmmm there is shepherds pie on the menu at work today so will be having that

Loucee · 25/09/2007 09:56

Excellent Blog Thelady, gave me a good laugh!

fifisworld · 25/09/2007 10:48

I need to have a moan i hope you dont mind.
Is anyone else fed up of being pregnant??
I feel so tired, im aching, im sick of being short of breath and just everything really

I loved being pg with ds, i could rest whenever i wanted, had no aches or pains but i feel different this time.
I just want him out

Loucee · 25/09/2007 10:54

Ah Fifi, moan away! We're getting to that stage now where the bumps are getting heavy to carry round and we're restricted with what we can and cant do as a result. I am finding it harder this time as I'm looking after a toddler as well but then again the time seems to be passing more quickly because of this.

Try and relax whenever you can, this last trimester will pass and you'll soon see the finishing post in sight.

Re the breathlessness, I'm finding deep breathing techniques are helping me when I'm suffering and Skidaddle's tip of leaning over is great as it's making as big a space for your lungs as possible.

I think you deserve some pampering - how about a home face mask in a nice long soak?

Bouncingturtle · 25/09/2007 11:23

Yep I confess I'm fed up of being uncomfortable and heavy, and yesterday my right hip was really acting up was absolutely killing me!!
Still I struggled onto do the shopping at Asda, took your advice park in the P&C place so I could open my car door all the way to make getting out easier, and yep got a glare. Stupid b*thch, the way I was feeling she was lucky I didn't lamp her one. Then Dh was whining at me last night because I told him that the litter tray needed cleaning coz it stank. He did apologise in the end for being snappy though

becklespeckle · 25/09/2007 11:25

LOL at your DHs blog Thelady! Made me chuckle!
Have done the eye predictor thingy and apparently my LO will have blue eyes as DH has them and mine are probably closest to blue (they are actually more greyish/blue with flecks of green and a blue/grey rim round them now I am older - definitely blue when I was a child though). Both my parents have brown eyes though so I was definitely the throwback there!
How is everyone today?
Am getting lots of wriggles today which is lovely! Most kicks coming out of the side too and bump has moved upwards again so am guessing baby still lying sideways but running out of room lower down. Kicks to the side are much more comfy than the usual kicks to the cervix I get. Getting a few BHs today too.
I honestly don't think that they can accurately tell baby weight from palpation alone - I was told DS1 would be about 8 lb and he was over 9! They said DS2 would be a little bigger, which he was, but I think that was just guesswork on their part. Am seeing the MW next week so hopefully they will have a feel and give me an idea of the actual positioning and fundal height of baby - have not had that done yet!

Neuro · 25/09/2007 11:34

Fifisworld - book yourself a pregnancy massage. I had one last week and somehow she's transformed my back and has made me feel happy again about carrying this extra weight. And she visited me in my own home and made a right fuss of me. In fact I would reccommend this to anyone with any backache. Honestly I've been to phsyios, doctors, chiros, regularly massages, etc regularly for the last 6 years and nothing has helped particuarly (even the physio exercises got me only so far).

And I just posted on the Jan thread that you should all go and see Knocked Up at the cinema. It is GREAT! An american film without the schmaltzy crap. Humour aside, it really nails the 'unreasonableness' that us pregnant ladies appear to experience and express.

Neuro · 25/09/2007 11:37

Eye colours - don't be sure all you blued eyed parents that you'll have a blued eyed bubby! You probably will, but you never know when those different colour recessive genes will kick in. My flatmate is brown eyed, but both parents have blue grey eyes and they are definitely her biological parents. Gawd bless nature for keeping us on our toes

Mrswizz · 25/09/2007 11:48

Fifi, I'm with you! 3rd trimester ain't all that. Can't believe I've got 10 ish weeks to go and I'll be growing even bigger! I forsee a time in the not too distant future when I'm going to get stuck in the bath.

MotherofZ · 25/09/2007 11:50

at 10 weeks to go. Got 13 weeks and defo fed up. Just want to get things over and done with now....
